Lovie Says He’s Bullish On A QB “Upgrade”

February 20th, 2014
"It's a tough business, my son."

“It’s a tough business, my son.”

“But if you ask me do I think we can win games with Mike Glennon? I’m going to say, “yeah, we can win games with Mike Glennon.’ If you ask me would you like to upgrade the position? I’m not running around the question. That’s a yes, too. If you ask me, would you like a veteran? Yeah. Really, that’s the case. It all has to go together. You have to look at what’s available at other positions, too.” — Bucs head coach Lovie Smith, speaking today at the NFL Scouting Combine.

You can read more of Lovie’s quotes here from TampaBay.com. Lovie also talks about how he wants a veteran quarterback in the mix of the four QBs he’ll bring to camp.

This is a depressing day for the Mike Glennon Mob.

  1. Drew Says:

@Joe… why is it a depressing day for the Glennon Mob? Lovie’s statements are what every other team in the NFL does. May the best QB win the starting job. If it’s MG, then it’s MG.

Point is regardless of who wins the starting role the team as a whole must win.

You really believe “every other team in the NFL” talks about getting a new quarterback? Please. –Joe

  2. Tony Says:

I guess I’m part of the Mike Glennon mob because I like the kid…but that doesn’t mean I’m opposed to an upgrade at the position (NOT looking at you Mr. Vick). Hey Joe, any other positions on this team we want to discuss or is your personal vendetta to get a new QB in Tampa going to bring your great site down in flames?

What vendetta? Joe is sharing the words of the head coach. Joe will share more words from the head coach. Interpret the head coach’s words as you wish. –Joe

  3. Orca Says:

    @Joe-
We all know this is the time of year for smokescreens. It only works to the Bucs advantage if other teams believe they may be interested in drafting a QB. That doesn’t mean that I think they aren’t considering a QB, but I do think all statements made from here on have to be viewed critically, knowing that most teams are going to throw chum in the water rather than give away their actual draft day thinking.

  4. Glennon Mob Says:

Glennon will still beat who ever they bring

  5. ROBERT6 Says:

well at least we have a QB that will use this as fire as opposed to one who would out, moan and destroy the organization over. The same QB joe has been a big proponent on and still thinks, based on his articles, that free has more upside.

Calvin Coolidge – Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

yet some would have you believe mr silver spoon, beer kegger run around and forget about the WR manziel is the answer. a little envy. maybe a little, but it pales in comparison to my belief that brains, level head, inner drive, work ethic and a good amount of talent will beat talent alone over the long term. /end rant

  6. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Only idiots would not want to take a QB in this draft, assuming Clowney does not fall to us.

  7. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    ROBERT6 Says
“well at least we have a QB that will use this as fire”

    How do you know that?

  8. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Can anyone tell me where to watch the Lovie interview at the Combine that was at 1:15? I’ve been looking all over.

  9. ROBERT6 Says:

yeah, a rookie is sure going to bring a lot to the table to help groom what w have in house. hell, trading away 1/2 our draft and ignoring otherteam need seems like a great way to the SB according to the redskins.

    -village idiot

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    ATTN Village Idiot
Hey, stupid, I never said a word about trading anything. I happen to believe we should stay at 7 and I’ve stated this over and over.

  11. ROBERT6 Says:

I say that based on what I see on the field bonsai.

I see a calm guy who does not get rattled. comes off the field and goes directly to the play sheets and studies them to find the mistakes. a QB with his head up even if he just got knocked the f*&k out. we don’t hear about him posting nonsense on twitter, wanting to be a country and western singer etc, etc.

    basically the opposite of free.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Why do people blame Joe for quoting what the Buccaneers coach says? What? He is supposed to ignore things that the MGM doesn’t agree with?

And he can’t even have an opinion of his own???

He has more right to voice an opinion here than anyone else. And you know what? Many agree, because he is more popular than PR or any other Bucs related site.

  13. burg Says:

    Bortles time baby….

And Joe is sleeping on the helmet leakthat has been online for voer 2 hours

Actually, Joe doesn’t care much about that, so Joe will write about it when it’s official tonight on NFL Network. Joe’s more concerned with who’s in the helmet. –Joe

  14. Eric Says:

Obviously, Tedford and Lovie have looked at the tape now and know we don’t have a prayer with Glennon.

Need an upgrade. If you have a chance to get a QB at 7, take it.

    Or trade up if necessary.

I’ve said it before. No way did Lovie come back to the NFL to have no QB again.

He’s gonna get one, and it is not Mike Glennon.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Okay, Robert6, I’m going to stop name calling and actually talk about this.

“I see a calm guy who does not get rattled.”

I see a guy that is lost, doesn’t know what he’s doing, and has no fire.

” we don’t hear about him posting nonsense on twitter, wanting to be a country and western singer etc, etc. ”

First, that means absolutely nothing. Second, Chris Simms held his head up, and he sucked. In fact, Glennon is very much like Chris Simms so far.

Look, I’m not against Glennon. I hope he does turn out to be a great QB for the Bucs. I’m just not willing to risk it all on a hunch when we are in position to get someone that can compete for that starting role against him, and we use the best of the two.

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Aside from trading, I agree with Eric.

  17. ROBERT6 Says:

If there is a QB there at #7 with the teams picking ahead of us being in shambles at qb……….man this guy must have some question marks. we might get lucky and have the 4th best qb in the draft.

    LOL

and they say this is the deepest draft in how long, yet we would not have only one decent pick in the second other than our gamble on the 4th best qb in the draft…….

and I’m the stupid idiot. it’s cool if you think that. consider the source.

  18. pick6 Says:

i’m okay with QB competition, but if you draft a QB at 7 overall, there will be no competition. the rookie will start, the veteran will back him up, and glennon is demoted to developmental QB til the veteran leaves town

  19. pick6 Says:

also, if we’ve learned anything about the draft it’s that if a coach or GM says something like “I’m not running around the question. That’s a yes, too.” regarding draft strategy, they probably intend to do the opposite.

  20. Leon Says:

Definitely good news.. This Glennon sh*t is ridiculous kid has twice as many negatives as positives. The second we add his replacement this team just jumped leaps and bounds.

  21. ROBERT6 Says:

simms was spineless. I get the looks comparison…..similar in some areas.

we all se what we want. that’s a fact. only time will tell. I would LOVE for them to get Vick or Schaub in here, but IMO we don’t need 2 practically rookie qb’s.

  22. ander Says:

bucs are going to sign vick, alot of fans are going to be mad but its obvious its going to happen you got the tony dungy connection and he seems like a lovie guy. as far as the draft goes its wide open if bortles or bridgewater fall they might take that guy, however i will still go with watking

  23. Couch Fan Says:

Anybody with any brains knows not to read into any statements before the draft. It’s all an illusion.

  24. Touchdown Gus Says:

It seems like I have to say this every year. DONT BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU HEAR THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. Smokescreen are a plenty this time of the year. With that said, if you can upgrade the quarterback position, DO IT! I’d be ready to riot if Bridgewater fell to the bucs and they didn’t pick him

  25. Touchdown Gus Says:

Joe, I get the feeling that if Lovie would have came out and said “we are staying with Glennon, he will be our quarterback. You would have a wrote about it being a smokescreen…..

Joe will cheer like mad for the Bucs’ starting quarterback in 2014. That’s something you can be sure of. –Joe

  26. John Says:

Lovie sticks to his plans, best player to improve the team. Never said QB would be 1st rd pick, or 7th. Draft or FA. Just improve.
KEY WORDS,” We have a plan in place and sticking to it.”

The draft stock in players change daily, by the time of the draft, the order of valued players will look a lot different than today.

Not many people will know what the management will do….I think that’s the object here.

But laughed my a** off knowing Joe will bleed this dry hoping for that elite QB in the draft……Sell the farm, trade future picks for that QB right Joe. It just won’t happen.

  27. ROBERT6 Says:

I read it that way as well pick6

just some bait for a couple veterans he might want, because they are not going to sign to be a backup. and if they beat out MG I will be fine with it.

  28. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I would like to remind the MGM that Mike Glennon only had a 51% PCT average in his last 4 games. He did not do well down the stretch. That is why no one is sold on him.

  29. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

John, Lovie also said if he can upgrade the position he will. That is acknowledging that the position needs an upgrade.

  30. bucray1 Says:

way to spin it joe. there were 3 aspects to the interview answer and you chose , once again , to headline the part that promotes your agenda. please don’t take your readers for idiots, we see right thru you.

Dear Reading Challenged: You can pretend Lovie didn’t say what he said all you want. And Joe has no agenda. You might want to research the definition. Joe doesn’t have to evaluate the starting QB and think he’s great just to please folks. — Joe

  31. Couch Fan Says:

The statement was generic and can be said about anyone and about any position and can be twisted to look like whatever you want it to mean.

Which is exactly why Lovie said it. He wants to keep his hand well hidden.

It’s bait for the haters and the ignorant. Keep hatin.

    – Official member of the MGM

It’s a completely different animal when it’s the QB. See Winter 2013. Those are just the dynamics of the NFL. Either you’re all-in with your QB, or you’re not. The Bucs are not. –Joe

  32. burg Says:

You mad bro? (I mean Joe) lol j/k

  33. ROBERT6 Says:

bonsai…you mean down the stretch when he had the water boy carrying the ball, 1/2 the team was hurt and the other 1/2 was mailing it in waiting for the torture of the season to be over. that stretch?

not sure ANY QB in history could have done better than 50/50 at that time……2 of teams in that stretch being the saints and 49ers.

  34. ROBERT6 Says:

even more, 3 out of the last 5 games last year were playoff teams. facepalm….

  35. Touchdown Gus Says:

Is it all possible that Glennon in year 2 IS the upgrade. Honestly Glennon will get his shot, if he loses fine, if he wins fine. I just want the bucs to win

  36. mpmalloy Says:

I seriously doubt that anyone will beat out Glennon at this point.
Possibly McCown or Vick and if they do it will be by a very slim
    margin.
I agree with Robert6: Glennon has some ass to him.
There’s a little chip on his shoulder.

    That said,
I wonder what Johnny Football is doing right now?
Maybe he’s gazing at the same bright star as Joe?
    *deep sigh*

  37. Cobraboy Says:

Depressing? How? Every coach I ever knew let it be know early on they are looking to replace you with a better player.

Smith said exactly what an NFL Head Coach should say regarding a position that is not settled. I doubt there are more that 10 players on the roster the coaches are “all in” for and no Buc QB is on that list. That means they are looking for 43 upgrades.

I didn’t read it as he’s down on Glennon at all, and I doubt Glennon would hear it that way, either.

I also expect the entire coaching staff and GM to be playing Liar’s Poker for the next 11 weeks…as every coaching staff and GM on every team in the league will.

I swear, some football geeks are worse than an insecure, young teenage boy in love, trying to interpret every word his target of love utters: “does she love me, does she love me not…”

  38. Cobraboy Says:

I wouldn’t object to a long look at Schaub as serious competition, but I suspect he’d want to go to where he’s assured to start.

  39. knucknbuc Says:

Hahahahah look at all of mike glennons boyfriends coming out to defend his honor. It’s kind of cute in a Michael Sam kind of way. All it’s is a smokescreen!! He’s going to beat out whoever comes in!!! Blah blah blah. Fantasy land some of yall live in. Does this sound like a guy who is in love with glennon as his qb? Does it sound like someone who wants to be hitched to glennon. Not to me it doesnt. I’m sure movie could of just gave some generic cliche answer and moved on but he didn’t he gave us this. Damn I love this regime already.

  40. rayjay1122 Says:

I just hope we do not use the #7 pick on Clowney. I know there are people who are lobying for him if he falls to us at #7 and I realize that Lovie is all about that side of the ball, but I fear he will be a big time bust. You can’t coach heart and that guy plays with half of his heart. It is a shame too because he has the skills to be great. Such a waste.

  41. Eric Says:

If a team has a QB they want to build around, they never say they are looking to upgrade the position.

Its pretty much the same as “this guy won’t do, were looking like hell for someone else”.

  42. crazy Says:

The interview reads like a blinding blast of the obvious – best player the team can sign at each position with a mix of youth and experience. Maybe “they” knows something more specific.

  43. bucray1 Says:

joe , if you really have no agenda then , why didn’t the headline read ” lovie says we can win with glennon” hmmm. you talk about how things are spun all the time on wdae620 , so why would any reasonable brain think that you are incapable of spinning your articles. and , before you attempt to distort this reply , I am not part of the mike glennon mob. I do, however , think you can’t properly judge the career a qb will have after only 14 games. your disdain for mike glennon as qb is very apparent in almost every article you lead with him. usually your musings are very well written and I thoroughly enjoy reading them. your objectivity with glennon ,however , seems to have taken a detour. fyi , I have 2 higher education degrees and have been a buc fan long before you , so please don’t insult me by saying I don’t know how to read your articles properly. they are what they are

First, if you haven’t noticed, this is an opinion-driven website. Yes, Joe delivers news and breaks news himself, but Joe’s opinion is what this site is about. Joe doesn’t hide that he believes the Bucs need a better quarterback. That’s not an agenda. It’s simply a prevalent opinion because it’s such an important position and a focus for many fans. Keep in mind you’re bitching to Joe, the same guy who this morning shared the great praise of Glennon by departed Gabe Carimi. Now why would Joe type that up — and many other pieces pro-Glennon — if Joe had an agenda. It’s just silly talk to say Joe has an agenda of the kind you’re recklessly assigning. –Joe

  44. rayjay1122 Says:

As far a Glennon goes…I am not in the mob, however I do like him and if he has enough upside and improvement to win the job over another veteran or rookie then as far as I am concerned he is the man. He is the returning starter until someone proves otherwise. I would not move up since we need to much to sell the farm for a rookie QB, but if Manziel or Bridgewater were to fall to #7 then I think you have to take one of them. That won’t happen though. I would go with Mack, Barr, Mathews or Watkins if one of them is available when we pick.

  45. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Maybe we are talking semantics with the word “agenda”. I think one or more writers of this website:

    1) Doesn’t like Glennon as the starter for this team

    2) Wants the team to draft Manziel

As such, the writer(s) continually use these feelings as subtext for articles and the questions that they give in their interviews.

Let’s be straight up, here. You (the writer), don’t care what I think. And, I don’t care if you deny it (but I obviously don’t believe the denial). We’re both not idiots, so, save me the lip service.

Me? Glennon gets a shot against whoever they bring in. He’s earned that. And, Manziel is a bust waiting to happen. And finally, this is just a weak QB draft year, and no matter how much some of you want to dress up these prospects (it’s like their agents are posting), it doesn’t change anything. It’s just bad luck if you are team wanting to draft a QB this year.

  46. rayjay1122 Says:

IMO Manziel will be a locker room cancer but will be skill wise a little like Favre was….able to make plays by extending plays with his feet however he will throw a ton of INT’s due to over confidence and attempting to force throws. Also WR’s will get disenchanted when they are working theit tails off to get open and Manziel decides to run.

  47. Joe Says:

IMO Manziel will be a locker room cancer

This stuff amazes Joe. Based on what? His teammates in college loved the guy. If there was any guy at Texas A&M who hated Manziel, now would be the time to unload and f’ up his draft stock. Yet all you hear are crickets.

What, he will be a cancer to his NFL teammates because his girlfriend has big t!ts?

It is almost like people want the guy to fail. It’s amazing.

    smh

  48. PRBucFan Says:

I think it’s hilarious you people use Washington as some kind of excuse as to why trading up for a QB is bad..

When in fact the results are still being determined from that trade and so far its

1 great year of positive results
    and
1 poor year of negative results with much controversy

But yes, by all means, act like it’s otherwise

  49. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I see that Lovie is laying a smoke screen already for the draft. Talk up the QB’s and then draft who they really want. Well played Lovie, Well played.

  50. ROBERT6 Says:

hey joe…..maybe everyone in the locker room was doing the same as him chugging beers and chasing tail. he probably got 1/2 of them laid. whats not to like.

bring that to an actual pro team with adults, wives and not just chasing skirts and he might be viewed as immature and a slacker. just maybe..

  51. ROBERT6 Says:

PR- Washington is a disaster. they had to fire the coach and who else over this. it’s bigger than a few bad games.

  52. PRBucFan Says:

Yes because all of that stems from a bad trade and didn’t exist in and of themselves..

Yet, they weren’t a “disaster” last year when they made the playoffs because of said trade…

    Funny how that works

  53. Eric Says:

Folks think rgIII is a disaster, even though he led his team to a Division Title in his rookie year.

Yet Glennon is a future Hall of Fame candidate after winning 4 games and leading the last place offense in pro football.

    Fascinating.

  56. mark2001 Says:

Joe…I never bought into some “Glennon hate conspiracy” regarding your perspective…still don’t. But I do think you are getting pretty testy about the Glennon thing. Please don’t let the Mob turn your vision to red when you hear the name Glennon. No one in their right mind would want to put the next few years in the “Glennon basket”. Didn’t we learn anything from Freeman? I’ve wanted us to bring in a good Vet that can win if Glennon Faulters, or maybe pass him up if possible. I don’t know how good a QB he can develop into…and I don’t want to risk the future of the franchise on it. I remember that some even questioned whether Rodgers could effectively replace Favre….he had shown promise, but had broken a leg or ankle and the question of durability existed. And Glennon is no Rodgers. So bring on the competition. But honestly, other than Jackson and Revis, McCoy and David, who on this team are you really “settled with”. I’ve even seen Martin on a “draft disappointment list” because of his injury. So bring on the competition.

  57. knucknbuc Says:

Gotta give it up to you Joe…every time I see that picture of Greg and Mike with the captions I crack up. Who says a member of the MGM and fan of the ousted NSO can’t take a joke…almost as funny as the one picture of Freeman sitting on the Vikings bench with a total look of bewilderment. That’s great too.

  59. Piratic Says:

@knucknbuc: MOST people get angry when they are confronted with stupidity. It’s likely that you are already well aware of this, and that’s why you type what you type, because you know that there will be no negative physical repercussions for your ignorant, hateful, spineless drivel. It’s my contention that if you were to meet Michael Sam, and he knew about the comments you’ve made about him, you wouldn’t be man enough to defend your position, and would simply run away and prove what a coward you really are.

The Glennon Mob welcomes the competition.

    We never said we didn’t…

But we’re not idiots to know that if they select a QB in the 1st round, Glennon will be backup.

So since that’s probably not going to happen, it is safe to say that whoever the staff brings in, Glennon will be given a fair shot to win the job.

That’s all we have asked for and it sounds like the Bucs agree.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it!

    ————————————————————————————

I agree that MG8′s performance was poor in December compared to his performance in November (three games with rating of 123.1 or better, offensive rookie of the month). But did he regress as the year went on?
Most people do not think that Peyton Manning “regressed” in the month of February? Rather the stifling and ferocious #1 defense in the NFL shut him down.

Well, the Bucs’ December schedule included the following defensive units: Panthers (2nd overall, 6th passing), Saints (4th overall, 2nd passing), 49′ers (5th overall, 7th passing), Bills (10th overall, but 4th against the pass), and St. Louis (15th overall, but 3rd in total sacks, and 7 sacks that game).
Furthermore, three of those opponents were playoff teams (SF 12-4, Carolina 12-4, and NO 11-5) vying to win their division, and playing for a first round bye vs. our 4-12 Bucs looking to start their offseason.

    tickrdr

BTW, I know that the Seahawks completely overlooked our hapless Bucs, but MG8 did have a QB rating against them of 123.1, with 2 td’s and no INT’s, all on their homecourt. Did I mention that he was a rookie, and only a 3rd round draft pick to boot.
