Gabe Carimi Among Four Cut

Gabe Carimi was one of four Bucs released today.

Last year Joe thought it was a good gamble to trade a late-round pick for bust offensive lineman Gabe Carimi. The former Outland Trophy winner was a total and complete washout with the Bears, but with his former college offensive line coach, Bob Bostad, working for the Bucs, Joe thought if anyone could get the former first-round pick on the right track, it might be Bostad.

Alas, Bostad was jettisoned along with all of former Bucs commander Greg Schiano’s staff in January, thus the only reason to keep Carimi was no longer around.

It seems the Bucs have come to the same conclusion as the team announced this afternoon Carimi was one of four Bucs players cut from the roster. The other three include backup defensive tackle Derek Landri, running back Michael Hill, and never used quarterback Jordan Rodgers, whose greatest claim to fame is he is the little brother of Aaron.

Don’t discount the fact it was Lovie who drafted Carimi in the first round with the Bears. Perhaps he had his fill of watching the guy?

Landri’s ousting suggests the Bucs plan a big-time upgrade in defensive tackles, at least depth-wise. Landri was the best backup tackle for the Bucs with a riveting nine tackles and one start, notes Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.

Yes, this should be an interesting next few months for Bucs fans. It’s safe to assume this is far from the final shuffling of the roster.

    Let the Fun began!

  2. You Go Joe Says:

    So it begins. The Great Cleansing for the players!! Well at least for the backups.

    Dam glad Landri left, the dude was a no body and wasted space for us. Carimi on the other hand might have had a bounce back with the help of Bostad. But Joe brought up a good point it was Lovie who drafted him and went through the hard ship of him getting man handled.

    Game on Bucs. Trim the fat !!! Next goes Glennon…… Pretty please.

  4. Macabee Says:

    Ah, the housecleaning has started. I hope this means no more reclamation projects. Between Carimi and Derek Landri, the Bucs have added over 2.5mil to cap space. If they get a UDFA punter/kicker in the offseason, replacing Koenen would add 3.25mil to cap space. Need the money to get playmakers!

  5. Dennis Says:

    @Joe

    Do you know how much money that saved us in regards to the salary cap?

    A couple of million at most. –Joe

  6. bwf921 Says:

    Wait a second. Why isn’t Teo gone. Hopefully he is already at McDonalds

  7. Dennis Says:

    @Macabee

    Thanks I literally was just asking that question and was curious haha. Seems like with a lot of reconstructing and getting rid of the weeds this team can have good money to spend this off season.

  8. SAMCRO Says:

    Carimi being cut might be a sign the Bucs might go Oline first pick.

  9. Macabee Says:

    bwf921,

    Teo is in lameduck status in that he is a free agent. He will no longer be a Buc after March 11 unless the Bucs re-sign him! He is not counted in the 2014 cap.

  10. Macabee Says:

    Here’s a list of the Bucs free agents: offensive linemen Jamon Meredith and Ted Larsen; quarterback Dan Orlovsky; receiver Tiquan Underwood; tight end Nate Byham; running backs Brian Leonard, Erik Lorig and Spencer Larsen; defensive linemen Daniel Te’o-Nesheim and Gary Gibson; defensive backs Danny Gorrer and Michael Adams; linebackers Dekoda Watson, Jonathan Casillas, Adam Hayward and Jacob Cutrera; long-snapper Andrew Economos; and kickers Rian Lindell and Lawrence Tynes.

    Technically, already gone unless re-signed by the Bucs. I predict a few will be re-signed, but not all!

  11. BigMacAttack Says:

    Good Call Lovie.

  12. Kalind Says:

    Resign Casillas and Watson, and be done with it. Use the savings to sign GMC and David long term. And get a couple of mid level talent guys in for cheap ish.
    Maclin??? Verner? And one of those pass rushers, god there’s a load of them this year. Pick 2 and let’s go.

  13. Harry Says:

    I agree. It seemed like a great move at the time. But, after the season was over, I watched a video analysis of ‘why the bucs run game is not working’. Carimi was supposed to block a linebacker on the 2nd level, went at him and TOTALLY WIFFED the block. Maybe the worst WIFF in the history of the NFL. Carimi did not even touch the guy.

    I’ll bet Lovie saw this same play and said “I wasted a first round pick on this dude? I don’t want him near camp. Cut him NOW!”.

  14. Eric Says:

    How are we ever going to participate in the NFL draft without rock star.

    He invented it after all.

  15. Architek Says:

    Winter cleaning…

  16. Kalind Says:

    Harsh Eric. He was a solid GM. Better than MMmmmKay, and certainly better than that hand puppet, Bruce Allen, who is driving the Skins into the ground, pedal on the floor.

  17. Jon Says:

    Harry. Great eval. You watched a play and know he’s a bum! Ha. Lovie drafted Carimi in the first round. Hope he learned from that mistake

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Domimick would have never cut Carimi because he acquired him…..its like buying a bad stock……you hang on to a loser in hopes that it will eventually pay off. Luke Stocker and Myron Lewis are other good examples….Keith Tandy may be added to the list.
    You can best believe the 2014 roster will look quite a bit different!!!

  19. Eric Says:

    Skins won division year before last and have young QB who has made one pro bowl already.

    Way better than anything that has happened here.

    McKay? Two first ballot hall of Famers and a Super Bowl!

    Rock star? Zilch…..

  20. Destinjohnny Says:

    Well the good news is at least we don’t have dom anymore- sucks to burn a six round pick

  21. lightningbuc Says:

    I remember when Carimi was signed by the Bucs, Joe subjected us to an article about how the alleged “rock star” and his staff knew knees. What a joke that Dom was!

  22. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @Destinjohnny

    The pop-star wasting a 6th rounder for a guy who could not play is nothing compared to the other atrocities that he committed while he thought he was a real NFL GM.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Buc Realist

    Dom “Pop Star” RIP

    I hope Licht meets with your approval. If not, I guess we’re in for a heavy dose of criticism….how ’bout giving him….and us…a brief honeymoon?

  24. Destinjohnny Says:

    Yep all true buc realist. It was funny no shocking how many in the media were behind him. Tampa is a weird market in that I think we have to least knowledgable writers I have ever seen.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    “New Broom Sweeps Clean”…..you can best beilieve that any marginal players (and we have a few) that eat up cap space will be shown the door!!!
    I don’t think the Lovie’s Bucs will have any problems attracting new FAs……weather is good, Mons Venus & no state income tax are good attractions.

  26. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

    dashon goldson didnt light up the league last year, im with you on your take except when you say keith tandy because for some reason a back up had more interceptions than “the hawk” but i do agree that goldson didnt play well because of the status he was GIVEN, he is one of the many players that have to prove he’s worth the money and the roster spot, if he cant outperform everything behind him convincingly then find a way to dump him

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Bucs4lyfe

    Tandy may be OK..just using him as an example….Any cutable player including Goldson & Revis will have to prove they are worthy of being on the roster.
    The beauty of this situation is that the GM & Coaches that put them there are gone….so the new regime can have their way….even if they decide not to go with Revis (and I think they will and should keep him) they can cut him….and most fans will support the move.
    The Revis issue is interesting because of the huge money involved. Either way….the decision could be viewed as a good one.

  28. Bill Says:

    Ah, Joe was just about to write another article about how Landri will supply an ‘inside push’ again in 2014.

  29. Evan Says:

    Here’s something that i just noticed. maybe a few of you can clear this up for me. How come we never tried Koenon as a kicker? He’s kicked clutchers and all that before for ATL before we stole him away. And he was getting paid big money for a punter, so tell me why Wannstadt/Schiano didn’t use him. He would’ve been better than Lindell. We could’ve saved a roster space & a bit of money, plus probably would’ve won a game or two.

  30. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    We do not need a kicker. We have one of the best returning from a non-football related injury.

  31. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Tampabaybucfan, on the topic of Goldson I’m almost certain Lovie can set him straight. The issue I see there is that even if he can, the refs will still target him and that will affect the team.

    I saw a LOT of Goldson-style hits during the playoffs. The refs let them slide. I think Goldson has painted a target on his back by saying he won’t change the way he plays.

    So Lovie has to either address the ref issue or decide if it is worth the hassle.

    If he keeps Goldson, he should have him start making statements that will remove the target…like “I have to learn to play within the rules” and “I respect the refs. They are doing what they have to to make sure the rules are enforced”.

    Essentially, Golson is going to have to campaign for favor.

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    I also would be surprised if Stocker is cut…unless it is for salary reeasons. Stocker would be good depth even if we get a new starter.
