GMC Haters Should Be Ashamed

February 10th, 2014

Bucs stud Gerald McCoy started off his career slowly, largely due to two consecutive season-ending injuries. As a result, GMC had few friends locally. Fans were down on him and loud radio voices raked him over the coals.

But GMC shut up the haters. With back-to-back trips to the Pro Bowl, GMC has been one of the very few bright spots on a Bucs team seeking its first playoff win since the Super Bowl of February 2003.

In fact, the spreadsheeters over at ProFootballFocus.com have even gone so far as to rate GMC as the best at putting heat on quarterbacks.

@PFF: Tampa Bay’s Gerald McCoy lead all DTs in 2013 with a Pass Rushing Productivity Rating of 11.1 (80 total pressures on 561 pass rush snaps)

Joe remembers this past fall when he asked Warren Sapp what he thought of GMC and Sapp looked directly in Joe’s eyes and said that in some ways, he thinks GMC is a better player than he was. And this is coming from a Hall of Famer!

Yet there are still folks working behind a mic and some fans who to this day refuse to give GMC credit. What crosses Joe’s mind is these people ought to be ashamed of themselves.

GMC haters??????? I haven’t seen any….maybe someone was disappointed in the beginning…but surely no Buc fan could actually “hate” GMC….he is a great player, leader and a great human being. For me, you can just fill the roster with GMCs….

  2. You Go Joe Says:

    Haters gonna hate!

Well at least our Bucs fan SHOULD not be hating on him as he got All Pros and 2nd Pro Bowl appearance. Anyone else will still want Suh over GMC and honestly they both are great players. Its not like either wont help a team out. I just like GMC as he has the leadership role and that badass attitude!

  3. Mike Says:

1st time I’ve agreed with the Joes in more then 2wks. If people are down on GMC then they obviously don’t want any stud players on their team. Can’t remember who it was, but yesterday seen one of those haters when they said we should trade GMC……. SMDH

  4. Legarrettes Blount Says:

Joe you were one of those writers who weren’t so hot on Gerald just because of injuries. Now that he is playing lights out he is on your good side. What a coincidence.

  5. bwf921 Says:

GMC has an opportunity to kill it this year. Remember Sapp had Rice, Spires and the gang to absorb double teams. GMC had Teo Noshow, a hurt Clayborn and Bowers. With some talent around him at the line he should easily surpass Suh

  6. joseph mamma Says:

He was drafted 3rd overall and looked like his arms were made of glass for the first two seasons he was here, and barely saw the field. So I can understand the hate, to a degree. With all that being said, he really has turned his career around the last two years.

  7. Chef Paul Says:

I wouldn’t have called myself a GMC “Hater.” More like a GMC “disappointed-er.” Still don’t care for his personality. I don’t think he’s soft, just kind of a camera seeking goof. BUT with that being said, I don’t watch the games or root for my team based on personality. He has shut me up with his play the last two years. I will never doubt his abilities again. He’s a beast, and plays like a champ. Best player on the team as far as I’m concerned. And, anyone who does doubt his skills is not worth your time, Joe, or any of us for that matter.

  8. SAMCRO Says:

Where are these haters today? Please, give us some examples? Especially the “folks working behind a mic”.

  9. Kurius Boy Says:

I was upset when we couldn’t get Suh in the draft that same year. Now i’m happy we got MCcoy instead of Suh. MCcoy is easily a top 5 DT in the NFL now

There were a LOT of haters during his second year of injury. I don’t remember you being one of them, and I know I wasn’t, but there were a lot. Nowadays they’ll say things like “I wasn’t a hater, I was just frustrated…” or some such thing.

As I recall, Thomas (the old one) was leader of that pack.

  11. Meh Says:

The early GMC haters were just confusing. He really only had injury problems. When he was healthy he looked absolutely spectacular – even early in his career.

  12. Meh Says:

Haha. Yes, Thomas was the lead GMC hater when he was hurt.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Bonzai

Yea…I know there were many that were doubters & were disappointed….but to me “hate” is a very strong word to use for someone who you don’t know personally and in particular someone who really has no effect on your personal life. But…that’s just me.
I reserve my hate for someone who reeally deserves it.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    really deserves it…..

  15. Clowney Says:

I was a hater, I admit I may be wrong, but he owes the Bucs about a $20 million discount on his next contract. Drafting a player at that spot, you want a quicker return on investment than 4 years.

His 3 sack game won me over but he should have had 3 sacks that day. He’s no QB Killa.

He still isn’t the best DT out of his draft class, Adkins in Cincinnati is.

  16. Architek Says:

He’s a beast and will get even better with the nuances of his game. I think the biggest thing about Sapp was the splash and the fanfare that came along with his game.

  17. stanglassman Says:

Kurius- I gotta ask who are your top 4 over GMC?

    Way to man up Chef-

Legaret- I thought the same thing when I read this headline.

  18. Kalind Says:

Sorry Clowney, you’re mistaken. McCoy is vastly superior to Atkins. Atkins has a supporting staff. He’s never triple teamed. Johnson (future buc?) Margus Hunt just to name a couple are all superior to the stumble-bums we have next to Gerald (Come on Gholston!).

That makes what Gerald is doing so much more impressive. It’s not all about numbers. You gotta look at circumstance too.

  19. Chef Paul Says:

    Bonzai,

“Nowadays they’ll say things like “I wasn’t a hater, I was just frustrated…” or some such thing.”

OK OK!! I was a hater. I’ll admit it. But just to you, and no one else.

  20. PhantomVash808 Says:

Bucs need to make giving GMC a new contract this offseason a high priority.

  21. Nick H Says:

So you tout pro bowl selections when it’s convenient and bash them when LVD doesn’t make one.

You regularly trash stats like the one above but fling em around when convenient.

    Hilurrious.

Some stats are worth more than others. Pro Bowl nods are appropriate in certain contexts. Joe’s pleased you’ve been entertainined. -Joe

  22. Joe Says:

Joe you were one of those writers who weren’t so hot on Gerald just because of injuries.

Joe was always on GMC’s side. But injuries early were a legitimate question. Shoot, even GMC would say the same thing.

  23. Joe Says:

As I recall, Thomas (the old one) was leader of that pack.

    LOL!

    Joe misses that guy.

    lol…you are a stand up guy 😉

  25. bigpoppabuc Says:

GMC has the quickest get off in the league, and some decent strength to boot… I just don’t think he’s quite the athlete that Sapp was or that Suh is. Not that I would take Suh over McCoy, I’m just stating his weakness and it’s cost him quite a few sacks.

the double and triple teams don’t work if McCoy beats them ALL off the snap, but that get-off does no good if he can’t corral the QB and there’s no one bringing help from the edge. Was painful watching Cam, Kap and Wilson just run away from McCoy and roll out to green grass with plenty of time.

  26. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Hilurrious.”

So you do not think McCoy should have gone? I think the point Joe is trying to make in that instance is that LVD deserved to be there more than other guys at the same position.

Personally, I think the players and coaches should be the only ones that vote. When they opened it up for the fans, they made a joke of it.

Or let stats be the deciding factor.

This was the first year I did not watch the Pro Bowl because I hated the new format. I liked NFC vs AFC better. Now there is no reason to even watch.

Another option is to use only the best rookies.

  27. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Or, here’s an idea. If the NFL creates a farm system, the Probowl can be the best of each teams farming team. Like the minors play games.

  28. Jbeachbuc Says:

Haven’t heard from that crowd for two years , they’ve gone into hiding or have changed their names on this site

  29. Capt. Tim Says:

I’ve always been in GMC’s corner. Glad I was. He’s every bit the monster we thought he could be.
To those of you who hated him- no worries. Glad to see all on board now.
Everybody is wrong once in a while.

I thought Freeman was the victim here. Can’t be more wrong than that!

But I’d bet good money that we are right about Lovie Smith being a great fit here in Tampa! That’s the surest bet in a while!
    Go Bucs!

  30. Capt. Tim Says:

Hope everyone remembers this, when trashing Bowers and Clayborn!
It takes Linemen a couple years to get adjusted to the NFL, especially when they are injured in the first couple years

  31. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Never wavered in my opinion of McCoy. Not once, not even during the haters’ heyday. And he is NOT a top five DT. He is a top ONE DT. Period.

  32. BoJim Says:

Was disappointed with GMC the first year. Then I started worrying in the second year. Look where is now. His place is secure. Yee haw. Let’s see what Clayborn and Bowers really have under Lovie and Frazier.

  33. Bobby Says:

LOL! I remember some legendary fights with Thomas 2.2 about GMC. Turns out I was right on that one but wrong about Freeman. Oh well…Hope I’m right about Glennon having potential with more weapons and a beefed up O-line.

  34. Pewter_Power Says:

Shame on you Joe. The Bucs won the Super Bowl in JANUARY of 2003. Surely you remember when the biggest moment in Bucs history happened. smh
