Seattle’s Defense Is En Route To Tampa

Father Dungy explains

Father Dungy, the man who brought Lovie Smith to the NFL, says Lovieball is going to look awfully familiar.

Asked about the Lovie regime on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday, Father Dungy seemed to brush off the importance of offensive football.

“I think you’re going to see in a year or two the type of defense that Seattle’s playing, that’s going to be played down here. That’s going to give you a shot. And everybody’s going to say, ‘well, you know you’re going to play New Orleans and Carolina and all these teams with the dynamic offenses,’ but I think the way Lovie’s going to build this team, they’re going to be a contender very quickly,” Dungy said.

Joe sure hopes Dungy is prophetic, but the Bucs need better quarterback play to accomplish their goals. Yes, Joe is fixated — rightfully so.

Joe does, however, have the utmost confidence in what Lovie will do with the Bucs defense. The new regime has a damn scary good head start with Gerald McCoy, Lavonte David, Darrelle Revis, Dashon Goldson and Mark Barron. Add better, smarter coaching and a couple of edge pass rushers, and that’s a top-5 defense.

Father Dungy also talked about his new book, his time jailed as a young man (yes, jailed), and his Hall of Fame “shock.” Enjoy the WDAE audio below.

Joe the clip only plays 30 secs – can you repost?

  2. Architek Says:

    Nevermind my mistake

  3. Andrew 1 Says:

Surprising to hear Dungy’s been to jail. Had a feeling it had something to do with race because Tony Dungy and Jail just dont go together.

  4. Captain Stagger Says:

Lovie can’t get to the Super Bowl with a sub par QB…….

Sexy Rexy begs to differ. And Joe this site is getting really tough to view on mobile. Constant redirects, app prompts, and auto App Store loading. Have you thought about a mobile version?

Actually, the app prompts/redirects were cleaned up and out. Perhaps they came back temporarily today. Joe will look into it. –Joe

  5. Patrick in VA Says:

    Concur with the captain

  6. Mumbles Says:

What time are they going to get here? We’re almost out of ammunition!

  7. Bucfan#37 Says:

Captain Stagger… Trade in your fancy cell phone for an older one. My old phone gets no ads, no prompts and no redirects. No video or audio either, except Youtube videos. Technology is not what it is cracked up to be.

I agree that we need a mobile version. This site is getting too dangerous to view on my phone. Please clean it up somehow!!!

LOL. There’s nothing dangerous. As Joe wrote below, there was a cleaned up redirect bug that may have returned this afternoon. Joe will get rid of it. **Also, Joe is much closer to something very cool for his mobile readers. –Joe

Joe isn’t fixated. Joe is obsessed. As in Jack Nicholson in The Shining obsessed. Every time I’ve almost forgotten about Joe’s QB mania here he comes smashing through my door with his axe and shouting, “Here’s Joey!”

    “JOHNNY!”

  12. FLBoyInDallas Says:

That’s hilarious…I almost put Johnny because of Manziel. You took the words right outta my mouth. Lol

  13. HotRod Says:

Isn’t there a difference between a sub-par QB and a good enough QB and even an elite QB? You don’t have to be part of the mob to not think Glennon is sub-par. The kid was serviceable and with a top 5 (hopefully top 3) defense and more than 1 legitimate target, I think they could be relevant. Bottom line you can’t take care of every item on your list in 1 year: I’d much rather see them address DE, WR, CB, OT, OG this off season.

  14. IdahoBucsfan Says:

Obsessed, and with the benefit of a “Bully Pulpit” to shove his mania down the readers throats. It is getting old! I know,.. its easy!

  15. bigpoppabuc Says:

We’ll be able to just how creative and flexable Licie and Frazier can be with the likes of Revis, Barron, Goldson and Tandy. If he stays stubborn to his Tampa 2 or even a Seattle style cover 3, I don’t think would be smart.
I’d like to see in your face press man and press bail. Mark Barron is about as versatile as they come and should only get better in his third year. Schiano was a stubborn mule but I’m sure this defense would have finished well into the top ten with ANY sort of consistent pass rush from the front four. I liked Schiano’s style on defense, but you could tell he was severely making up for what he lacked up front.

hopefully Lovie will be able to bring and develops D-Linemen while letting his secondary play to their strengths.

  16. Tgregs Says:

Happily Joe’s man crush will nor come to pass…thank God

  17. Barry Says:

Josh Freeman is a Franchise QB and Mike Glennon is Elephant Dung. Joes QB expertise.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

    Dangerous. lol

  19. Dave Says:

After seeing josh the first year and half almost everyone here thought he had franchise QB potential. So did every expert.
Glennon seems to have more if a mixed review which I don’t get. He’s smarter. Calmer in the pocket. Waaaaaay more accurate. Goes through reads better. Gas a better work ethic from what we hear.

He isn’t as mobile and doesn’t have as string an arm. Big deal.
I say give Glennon another season and go get a pass rush and O line and another CB.
    That makes them very relevant

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

Listen, we’ve done it before(win games) with sub-par QBs. Build on what you have and put pieces in place.
There is no question about the need for more competition at every position, including QB. They will have to address it. What will they do, FA or draft?
We can debate this till the cows come home. I beg only one thing; please don’t mortgage the franchise for the unknown. That’s all I’m saying. You CAN win with great D and a mediocre QB, you can! It would be nice, though, to have a hurler behind center. Kind of makes winning easier, eh!
    Go Bucs!
