CBS Deal Won’t Hurt Bucs’ Night-Game Chances

February 6th, 2014

Networks can’t completely hide Tampa Bay for uncertainty at quarterback

Before the NFL signed away Thursday Night Football rights to CBS this week, the league previously had committed to having every NFL team play at least one night game during the regular season.

If a team wasn’t chosen by a TV network for Sunday Night Football or Monday Night Football, then NFL Network promised to overhype the likes of Jacksonville, Cleveland and more on a Thursday.

It wasn’t clear initially whether that inclusive policy would survive with CBS taking over Thursday Night Football, but today the Washington Post confirmed it will.

Whew!

This is great news for Bucs fans. Most fans, including Joe, love night games. And when you’re coming off a crappy season like the Bucs are, and you have a no-name quarterback, it’s tough to get chosen for prime time. Networks like stars and winners.

The NFL schedule (dates and times) is released in April, prior to the NFL Draft. Hopefully, the Bucs will get a night home game, but Joe’s not banking on it. They didn’t in 2012, the opening campaign of the New Schiano Order.

Lovie Smith returning to Chicago to face the Bears this season might hold some intrigue for the networks. And Adrian Peterson and the Vikings coming to Tampa is always a decent bet. A guy like Peterson, who carries so much fantasy football interest, always has the eye of ratings-hungry network executives.

Of course, if the Bucs add Michael Vick in free agency next month, then count on two night games for the men in pewter and red.

  3. You Go Joe Says:

Packers @ tampa for a night game and I’m there!!

  4. IdahoBucsfan Says:

I don’t want Vick either,.. Let Mike Glennon show his stuff and GO BUCS!

  5. Wally Says:

No to Vick. I won’t spend any money on the team if he’s on it.

  6. Buc1987 Says:

    Mike Glennon over Mike Vick.

  7. WalkdaPlank Says:

im surprised you endorsed Vick over Johnny Boy when you had the chance to Joe. Maybe you realized the chances of him landing in Tampa are slimmer than you thought. Nah probably not. 😉

  8. Eric Says:

Matt Schaub has way better stats. Monster 4700 yards passing in 09 and over 4000 since then.

Vick has only been over 3000 twice in his tenure as a passer.

    And barely.

  9. Kevin Says:

You REALLLLLLLLLY had to put something about Vick in there didn’t you? Right there just snuck him in there right at the end. This is gonna be a LOOONG OFFSEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. INDYbucsfan Says:

All of you anti Vick fans are getting so annoying. What if Vick comes in here and wins? You guys have too short of a memory… What has it been like 6-7 years since we made the playoffs? We sniffed them in 2010 but would’ve been beat the first round. Glennon, Vick, manziel, Rodgers, he’ll even Tebow would become my favorite QB in the league if he took us to the playoffs.

Of course, if the Bucs add “Ron Mexico” in free agency, then count on them NOT being represented in the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet!

  12. William Says:

I’m really done with the Schiano nightmare. Let Glennon carry a clipboard and watch Vick execute the “Tedford Spread Offense” in the regular season.

Hopefully we see a new Glennon in August. Just for fun may Tedford and Arroyo be able to release Glennon from the Schiano handcuffs. It would be entertaining to see a big difference on him.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

Having the 4th best QB in the division will surely doom the Bucs for national TV coverage. Everyone knows this.

  14. Couch Fan Says:

What if Vick comes in here and wins

What if Joe Montana came out of retirement to lead us to the playoffs? Both have about the same odds.

  15. buccaneer863 Says:

Why does everyone always have negative things to say. It’s apparent we need a playmaker on offense. If they can bring Vick in for the right price, what harm can it do. It’s a low risk high reward. Stop being so selfish. I wish we can simulate the off season so yall can shut the hell up.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

If the Bucs get Vick. They’ll still have the 4th best qb in the division and they 5th best qb too. Glennon being the 4th and Vick being the 5th.

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

I hope so too. I don’t care who The Bucs draft or bring in.
    Just Win Baby!!!

  18. Macabee Says:

I don’t want any aged player looking for a second chance or one more bite of the apple. This is going to be a forgiving year for me, one of measured expectations. I want the coach and GM to fix the defense and start trying to find an offense.

I want Mike Glennon to get his chance to be the starting QB. I want another QB from the draft than has enough potential to provide some competition. I want Darelle Revis to show us that he is worth every cent of his contract. I want the hangers-on gone and the up and comers to get playing time. I want something completed and fixed not patched.

I want our team to be rehabilitated and re-invigorated with a winning attitude and an identity. No more quick fixes or hail mary attempts to get by. Invest in youth and talent. Take the time and the steps to get it right for the long-term.

I’m faithful and I’m not going anywhere. I can wait as long as I see we’re headed in the right direction! We can do this! Go Bucs!

  19. Couch Fan Says:

    I second that Macabee.

  20. RustyRhinos Says:

    Right On! Macabee

  21. trey83 Says:

I’d rather have JaMarcus Russell that Vick….. Well maybe not but you get the point.

  22. Bucsfanfromtexas Says:

Vick is injury prone, so he would only be wasting cap space.. I feel they will end up drafting a QB in the late rounds

  23. Teddy Says:

@William, Vick couldn’t run the Chip Kelly’s spread offense in Philly, so what makes you think he can run Tedford’s offense?

Vick is hanging on at the end of his career, almost like Donovan McNabb when he went to Washington and Minnesota. Better to draft a project like Jimmy Garoppolo or Aaron Murray and let Glennon take his lumps this year.

  24. BoJim Says:

I like Matt Schaub first. Vick second. But I want Glennon to start. Draft a QB in the later rounds. Ta Daaaa.

  25. WinterSpringsBucsFan Says:

Agree with Macabee. 100% No Patch…FIX IT.
