Rich Gannon Believes In Mike Glennon

January 28th, 2014

Longtime NFL quarterback Rich Gannon, now a game color analyst and a host on SiriusXM Radio, talked about Mike Glennon today at Super Bowl media day.

In the name of bringing Bucs fans all kinds of views of their beloved team, Joe made his annual trek to Super Bowl media day and has attended other Super Bowl festivities. And here’s the first of many notes, quotes and takes Joe will have through the week.

Joe’s got all kinds of big names.

This one’s for the Mike Glennon Mob, as well as Joe’s annoying commenters who inexplicably believe Joe quashes all good reviews of Mike Glennon like the KGB silenced democracy back in the day.

JoeBucsFan.com: What’s your perspective with the Bucs having Mike Glennon at quarterback now and not much else, and him being a lower tier quarterback in the NFL and the worst QB in the NFC South? How should the Bucs approach the QB position at this point?

Rich Gannon: I think they got the right guy in Glennon. I think [offensive coordinator] Jeff Tedford will do a really fine job. I mean he’s had a lot of success in the college level with some really good players. I think he understands the protections, and I think he understands footwork and getting Mike Glennon more in tuned with some those things. And I think the Bucs got a chance. I think they have the makings of having a pretty good offense — when they’re healthy. The running back injuries, you look at what happened on the offensive line, [Mike Williams] , and then you go out and get another tight end this offseason and you have something. I liked Mike Glennon coming out of college, and I think he throws the ball well but I think he’s gotta to get stronger in the weight room. I think it’ll help him. You know he’s got to use his legs a little bit more. But I think there’s good things to start with in Mike Glennon.

Joe:  Jeff Tedford mentioned that to the Tampa Bay media out of the gate, that Glennon could improve through the weight room. What specifically do you see that doing for him?

Gannon: It helps a lot, I mean your core strength. When you think about when you’re throwing the football, it’s not just your right arm. It’s your left side. It’s your core. It’s your legs. You look at guys that really throw the ball well, they incorporate all of them into the throwing motion. You got a guy in Glennon who’s longer that’s got the height who needs to play with a little more bend in his legs, and that’ll be important to his development. But I think the kid’s got a chance to be a good player.

    Ha ha ha hilarious.

  2. Patrick in VA Says:

Interesting take. You certainly gave him every chance to have his opinion handed to him but he went against it to praise the kid.

  3. Chef Paul Says:

“and him being a lower tier quarterback in the NFL right now and the worst QB in the NFC South?”

Lol. I have to ask. Did you really word it like that when you asked him that question?
Hey Rich, What you think about our shit*y quarterback? LOL

Of course, that’s exactly Joe’s wording. Joe doesn’t make stuff up. –Joe

  4. Chef Paul Says:

Sorry Joe. I thought the S word was still allowed. I’ll quit using it.

  5. Tony Says:

Hey Joe, great way to lead with that first question, ha! Essentially…so this QB in Tampa, he sucks, what do you think?

  6. That Guy Says:

Reminds me of a quote I saw about Glennon after Gregory and Dominik got fired:

Yet there’s still the matter of the quarterback. Mike Glennon had a good rookie season, but is he good enough to lead the team to the playoffs?
“His eyes got big, deer in the headlights,” the source said. “The more they tried to take the gloves off, the worse he got. When you have to push the ball down the field, some of the things that were criticisms of him [in college] started to show up.”

  7. rayray1 Says:

If it wasn’t obvious before how you felt about M. Glennon it is now. The way you framed your question to R. Gannon clarified your position. Is he the worst QB in the NFC South…yes. Would anyone we sign in free agency or draft still be the worst QB in the NFC South…..yes. Let’s get off the drum beating and get off to camp with whatever players the new staff puts in place and let the best player step forward.

Joe doesn’t hide his opinions. That should be obvious to regular readers. It’s no insult of Glennon to call him the worst QB in this division. –Joe

  8. Drew H. Says:

And Mike Glennon still hasn’t left the building, working out and studying. He can throw bombs and he showed A LOT. Yes there was a time when I said “no way, he can’t be the guy”…but he doesn’t need to be…that offensive line was a disgrace…plain and simple. No depth at any position anywhere in the offense….Glennon played with the worst coaching staff in the NFL…hands down.

Let that settle in..Greg Schiano and his whole staff was those of bums…

Mike went out there and balled on his own right..DESPITE that crap Sully offense that was a tired act in both NY and Tampa.

Give him one more year…don’t anoint him anything. Bring in a veteran and draft a 4th rounder like Murray from GA. Just stop the QB talk a bit please, it’s overkill. Let’s talk about adding a stud defender or offensive weapon.

I’m ALL OVER trading back to pick up North Carolina’s Eric Ebron. Can we get a little love on that topic please Joe?

  9. chickster Says:

    I just don’t see it

  10. Tgregs Says:

Just listened to Anthony Becht rain all over Joe’s “Johnny Football” parade.

    Amen!

  11. IdahoBucsfan Says:

I was ready to be surprised when I saw the title,.. but was brought back to reality when I read how you framed the question. Thanks for at least posting the interview instead of scrapping it when you didn’t get the desired response. Please don’t be stupid. Joe’s got no “desired response” when he asks a question. –Joe

I like Glennons poise,. he is a smart accurate QB who can make all the throws,… we have Many greater needs that changing from a young QB with so much potential.

  12. Tgregs Says:

    @Idaho
That’s pretty much what Becht said on BD

  13. Bucfan#37 Says:

Gannon thinks Glennon can be a good QB. Many Bucs fans think the same thing. Joe thinks Glennon does’nt have what it takes to successfully compete in the NFC south. Waiting for next season to get underway, I may as well flip a coin at this point to determine Glennon’s viability as the Bucs future QB. Time flies, but not fast enough for anxious Buc fans.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    Winston in 2015!

  15. Fishfries Says:

That’s a pretty negative way to ask a question don’t you think?

  16. Eric Says:

Wonder if BB would give us their first rounder for Revis. He just doesn’t fit in our overall plan.

  17. Bill T Says:

“him being a lower tier quarterback in the NFL and the worst QB in the NFC South”
Gannon asking himself…is this a reporter from Tampa or some other city who hates the Bucs? LOL

    @ Fishfries – agree…talk about unprofessional

What exactly is unprofessional? Joe would LOVE to hear your professional explanation. Joe actually had a chat with Gannon before getting on-the-record questions. You really have no clue what you’re talking about on many levels. –Joe

  18. Couch Fan Says:

Just got to laugh at the stupidity. Comical! Lol. Thanks for keeping us entertained Joe! Only 4 more months til the draft.

  19. Tgregs Says:

What leads you to think Joe is a reporter?

Considering Joe reports on all things Bucs, adheres to high journalistic standards and is credentialed by the NFL and the Bucs; that might lead some to believe that.–Joe

  20. PRBucFan Says:

I’m sure the feeling is mutual for those annoying commenters as well lol 😉

  21. Kalind Says:

Dang Joe, you’re getting savaged on these here pages. Come on guys, just because Joe is living the life we all want (Sans Rachel W), doesn’t mean you have to go after the guy. Chill. So he doesn’t love Glennon, me either.

The fan passion and cool-aid drinking here is adorable. But joe is right, he IS the worst QB in the division and has BY FAR the lowest ceiling. Schiano got fired partially for his near-obsession with the guy that could hardly play. Yes he was a rookie, but he’s just not a playmaker.

Sorry Joe, some of us appreciate your work. Keep it up, don’t change a thing.

Joe’s got thick skin. Joe realizes some fans think Joe is the devil because he doesn’t think Glennon has quality-starter potential. It’s OK. Fans can be as passionate as they wish. –Joe

  22. Stevek Says:

    Joe,

I’m MGM, born Freeman doubter. I have doubted Freeman ever since we went to England to play New England in 2011.

You call commenters “annoying” for speaking out in their belief of QB Mike Glennon. Please read more carefully, Joe didn’t write that anyone is annoying for stating their support of Glennon. –Joe

Be annoyed, sorry for your inability to see Glennon as a franchise QB.

I am even more confident in Glennon’s abilities, now more than ever, because you all and the BigDawgg thought Freemadonna was the answer. Nudf said, kid is going to have a chance to start. No QB in this draft is without a doubt better than Glennon, sorry, just not here.

  23. scotty Says:

GO GLENNON ! you can do it !!! (i hope) if not i am lovie will have ccompetition at this position.

  24. Vic Says:

Newsflash, people: Glennon isn’t that great. Put the damn stat sheet away and watch the game.

  25. PRBucFan Says:

I remember when Free Free was the next great franchise QB…

    lol

  26. Eric Says:

Go out and get a fine coach like Lovie and saddle him with Mike Glennon?

Sure hope we don’t do that. Not gonna get the job done, not even close.

  27. Bill T Says:

@ Joe: “You really have no clue what you’re talking about on many levels”.

LOL many levels? many? such as…

Such as what you referenced in your comment.–Joe

  28. Buc1987 Says:

“If we gonna do it then, we doin’ it big!” – Jameis Winston

  29. That Guy Says:

“Considering Joe reports on all things Bucs, adheres to high journalistic standards and is credentialed by the NFL and the Bucs; that might lead some to believe that.–Joe”

“Credentialed by the NFL,” just like the guy in the leprechaun costume at Media Day today, amirite?

Joe was thinking more along the lines of Joe’s coverage live at Pro Bowl practices this year, as well as the NFL Scouting combine and other exclusive NFL events. –Joe

  30. RustyRhinos Says:

I wonder if we do draft one of the “franchise QB’s” we have all read about on these here pages, will they be more than
“the worst QB in this division”? Ever? (It does take time to play at the extremely high level that Brees plays at, right)

We hear how great the so called “elite QB’s” in this draft are. But has any one of them ever even played a down in the NFL? Thrown any passes against a NFL defense, ran like gazelles across the line of scrimmage in the NFL? How can I read these pages of great Bucs information and believe that any of the not yet played in the NFL future QB’s will be better? Potential, Skills, Hype? Which is it?

I heard a long time ago that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Maybe the “elite QB” is better before the draft rather than after it?

I want to win and beat our division teams every game we play against them. I just do not see how we can read the future to do it.

Joe’s if you can read the future of any player coming out of college and then being drafted in the NFL. Then you should give up this great Blog you have and get into General Managing a NFL team. Because you would be unstoppable.

    GO BUCS!

  31. That Guy Says:

Has Glennon ever “ran like gazelles across the line of scrimmage in the NFL?” lol

  32. Kalind Says:

Totally agree with Joe’s previous posts. Glennon is getting competition. If he loses, I want all of you people to shut the heck up. If he can’t beat out what is most likely a rookie, he doesn’t deserve the start.

Not to mention, whoever wins is just keeping the spot warm for Jameis Winston, Mariotta, or that kid from Baylor anyway. No way at all Glennon starts after this year unless we win a playoff game….because of him.

  33. Kalind Says:

And as an aside, who cares if Joe is credentialed or not? He reports (yea I said reports..) on the Bucs which is what we all want. Just shut it and read the posts. However he gets it, he gets it. Just appreciate it.

  34. knucknbuc Says:

I love these glennon posts joe. The arguments remind me of the freeman posts. Whenever a post you put up about glennon. In the words of TO “get your popcorn ready”

  35. PRBucFan Says:

I want competition, heck I want us to draft a first round QB.

But will you all eat your words if Glennon beats out whoever they bring in for competition?

Cause chances are he may… He’s the prototypical, intelligent QB needed to run Tedfords complex, prolific offense.

I question his escapability and that is all.

  36. Brandon Says:

I’m not sure we could expect anything other than Gannon’s response. He was a QB, it’s a brotherhood, the NFL players themselves are a brotherhood, nobody wants to say something bad about another player for the most part, even when it’s former players, especially former players that played the same position.

Considering it doesn’t require a player to be great at a position to be able evaluate it, nor does it mean they can’t, Gannon’s outside opinion is fairly worthless…unless of course he has watched every professional snap Glennon has taken like many of us.

  37. Mando Playr Says:

….”and the worst QB in the NFC South”?

Question—how many quarterbacks in the history of the NFL had a rookie year that was better than the year that Drew Brees, Cam Newton or Matt Ryan had in 2013? More than nuff said.

Not relevant to the question. –Joe

  38. BoJim Says:

    Kalind said:

    Kiss Kiss Kiss.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    LOL Mando Playr…good point.

  40. PRBucFan Says:

    Very relevant Mando, bravo

  41. Upgrayedd Says:

Joe: “This one’s for the Mike Glennon Mob, as well as Joe’s annoying commenters who inexplicably believe Joe quashes all good reviews of Mike Glennon…”

Thank You! No offense, but its these “annoying commenters” that keep me from clicking on “read more” most of the time. (but hell, I’m sure there are some Glennon jock riders who find me annoying too)

But I found Glannon’s – er, Glennon’s comment pretty interesting: “I think they have the makings of having a pretty good offense — when they’re healthy.”

So Glennon can be “pretty good” as long as we don’t miss a WR, RB an OL or two. Sorry. But in the NFL, dudes go down. And stud QBs manage to rise above.

Glennon needs every aspect of our offense to be, adequate. Sorry, but this is the NFL. Adequate is for the CFL.

  42. Bucky23 Says:

Not gonna be in a position to draft Winston next year Buc1987

  43. Barry Says:

Glennon made All Rookie Team and set all Buc rookie records though he didn’t have a legit #2 or #3 WR, didn’t have a #1 TE, didn’t have his #1 or #2 RB. Props to Glennon. Only thing I can say about Avg Joe is that he thought Josh Freeman was a franchise QB and Mike Glennon’s not better than Josh Freeman. Wrong on both accounts.

  44. d-money Says:

There was a time when I thought Tampa had some relatively knowledgable fans.

After reading the comments on JBF.com lately I have reconsidered that position.

  45. PRBucFan Says:

I’ll take the Glennon Mob over the hopeless Freemanites any day lol.

    Check mate

  46. Eric Says:

Of course a rookie won’t play as well as Bree’s first year, but if selected properly should have the upside to get there or at least in the ballpark at some point.

Glennon doesn’t have that upside IMO. So, he’s a waste of time and we need to move on. The skill set isn’t there.

  47. PRBucFan Says:

    No one knows Glennon’s upside.

And to say any rookie can be in Brees’s ballpark, a hall of fame QB, is naive at best.

  48. Eric Says:

That should be the goal, get a guy who can become elite.

Nobody “knows” for sure on a draftee, but that’s a given. Still have to act. Or, it’s time to give up and go home.

  49. Kalind Says:

We hope we aren’t in position to draft Winston/Mariotta next year. But we’ll see. And that presumes we don’t trade for one of them. Which we will.

  50. Harry Says:

“IF” you are an objective Bucs fan, it is so funny how the MGM crowd clings to this article that is backed by Gannon (hmmm, Gannon – Glennon, Joe r u sure u were not confused on who you were interviewing?). But the MGM crowd is no where to be found under the “Donkey” article where Toomer is not so supportive of Glennon.

Its funny, I try to see both sides (not really, I do not understand you MGM ppl at all, lol). But how can anyone argue that in a QB driven league, and the Bucs have the worst QB in the NFC South, that we do not need an big upgrade?

  51. Tgregs Says:

    @upgrayedd

Just like Brees rose above last year’s turmoil? Or Ryan with all of the injuries this year? Give me a break.

Now Brady this year I will give you, but that is a rarity.

The concept of “Johnny Football” coming in and immediately leading us to Lombardi land is laughable.

  52. Tgregs Says:

I’ve asked this question repeatedly and never get an answer. Tell me the QB that we can get in either the draft or free agency that is guaranteed to be even the 3rd best QB in the division.

  53. Solinor Says:

“The only people that think Glennon is good are the people that evaluate talent for a living”

Best line I ever heard on here. Rich Gannon just adds more weight to that statement

  54. Tgregs Says:

BTW Joe, as to your “high journalistic standards” Your hypothesis that Rich McKay was coming back to Tampa based upon his “non-denial” was the rankest of unsubstantiated “journalism” I called you out on it then, based on personal knowledge.

Great example of you having know clue of the standards of journalism. Joe is entitled to have an opinion whether you like it or not. Joe did not make up anything at all. Your accusations are inappropriate and baseless, and therefore deleted. The archives are here for all to see. –Joe

  55. Lou. Says:

    A couple observations:

First, there are only four true franchise qbs in the league (Brady, Brees, Manning and Rodgers). These four dictate how the opposing offense has to play. There are 6 on the brink of franchise status — who either have “done that” or who a consensus think are close (E. Manning, Rothesberger, Flacco, Luck, Newton and Kaepernick). About 11 teams are satisfied with their starting about — Seattle, Washington, Dallas, San Diego, Detroit, Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Phoenix — and perhaps Cincinnati). There just are not that many good much less great qbs to be found. Frankly, I was concerned because St. Louis’ backup outplayed Glennon, so it is likely a number of prospects could be an upgrade. But it is not at all clear that any upgrade beyond Bridgewater is very likely to be great. Should we spend #7 to be a little better? Or to get a player who is more likely to become great? Dalton would be an upgrade , but does anyone think the Bucs would be sane to trade multiple high picks for Andy?

  56. Patrick in VA Says:

@harry – I think it was said multiple times in that thread that toomer discredited himself by talking about the solid o line and the great weapons glennon had to work with. Nothing more needs to be said

  57. Bill T Says:

    @ Lou – good analysis.

Everyone wants a great QB and also wants to be in the Superbowl. Its just not that easy. The question the Bucs front office and staff are asking themselves are where are we right now? i.e are we a team w/ mid-level talent and a possible 8-8 record, or are we a few pieces from being in the Superbowl?

I personally think we are 2-3 yrs away from a STRONG playoff team. So do we trade up to #1-4 to get Bridgewater/Manziel/Bortles? If so, we will have to give up our 2nd round pick and probably a #5th. I think that is a mistake as again, since we are a few years away.

If they do trade up, what if Glennon beats this pick out? I don’t think the front office will allow that to happen, because you can’t waste that pick and give up a #2 & #5. They would have to trade Glennon preseason to get value (2nd round pick?) and bring in a veteran to tutor that new pick. Are the Bucs willing to do that?

I would pick Watkins or Mack. Address the need you don’t get in the first round in free agency. I would let Glennon have it his 2nd year under Tedford…just my opinion.

  58. Keirster Says:

Hey, you gotta give it to Joe. He knows how to Rile you commenters up!

You will all have your day if Glennon works out to be a great one.

Or Joe will have his day if he does not.

Until then, Joe is smart to continue writing about things that evoke passion from the fan base.

Marketing 101 – Kudos Joe on an A+
