Thanks, Greg!

Michael Bennett is good enough for the NFC champs but wasn't good enough for Greg Schiano.

Michael Bennett is good enough for the NFC champs but wasn’t good enough for Greg Schiano.

Joe knows there will be readers who will tell Joe to knock it off, turn the page and forget about it because it is past history.

But no, Joe cannot forget about it and it gnaws at him daily.

As we watched yet another postseason conclude, save for the Super Bowl in two weeks, without the Bucs playing in it, it just drives Joe wild how a team like the Bucs who are just crying for someone to bring a quarterback down let a guy get away for about the cost of an upper-middle class home in Pinellas County.

In his must-read weekly column on the site that he runs, theMMQB.com, Barista-trainingpedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerkingbeer-chuggingcricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïvebaseball box score-reading Peter King, of SI.com and NBC Sports fame, seems to be a fan of Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett. The same Michael Bennett who the Bucs let walk away. The same Michael Bennett who led the Bucs in sacks in 2012. The same Michael Bennett who the Bucs washed their hands of last offseason for no good reason.

King typed about Bennett in his “Ten Things I Think” element in which he discusses what he likes about the NFL.

Michael Bennett, who reminds me of George Martin, the old Giant. The ball just found him. In other words, he has an instinct for finding the ball, and did it again on the Kaepernick strip-sack by Cliff Avril.

Finds the ball! Has an instinct for the ball! And yet the Bucs could not find a roster spot for him, but he was good enough for the NFC champs and good enough to help Seattle get to the Super Bowl making valuable plays all season long.

But he was not good enough for the last place Bucs!

Joe just wants to throw his bottle of beer against the wall this p!sses him off so much! It’s an outrage the Bucs let this guy go; stop with the excuses! Did he look like damaged goods this year with Seattle?

If anyone wants to know why former Bucs commander Greg Schiano is out of a job, aside from his record, this is Exhibit-A.

    Bring this guy back ASAP

  2. Stevek Says:

Dominick let Bennett to , because he was TOO PROUD of spending a 1st on Clayborn and a 2nd on Bowers.

Why do you think Schiano said during the pre-season: “Da’Quan Bowers is a 10 sack guy”. Maybe. Excuse Dominick let our best pass rusher walk for peanuts?

Kind of like holding onto Myron Lewis for so long, SMH.

Dominick failed this roster, Schiano failed on getting results.

  3. Pinnaql3 Says:

Why isn’t this ass clownery not directed at “Rock Star” Mark Dominik? He’s responsible for signing and re-signing players. He needed his draft selections to pan out; not Schiano.

  4. SAMCRO Says:

What if it was Bennetts decision to leave and it had nothing to do with Schiano? That upper middle class house in Pinellas County appears to not have been a big enough carrot and maybe Bennett was asking for a King’s Ransom to stay after just putting up a pedestrian 9 sack season.

I don’t think I would have given up the farm either. I assure you though they offered him more than Seattle but Bennett got an attitude that the Bucs wouldn’t bow to his original monetary demand and left for FA just out of spite.

  5. Joe Says:

Why isn’t this ass clownery not directed at “Rock Star”

Because it was Schiano who didn’t want him.

    Same with Gilberry.

  6. chickster Says:

The 2 last coach should have never been hired period

  7. Pinnaql3 Says:

Where was there ever proven in any way? Because Schiano didn’t say he did want him?? Because he didn’t throw Dominik under the bus???
It was reported that Schiano was asked to play Freeman when Schiano wanted to go another direction. How/Why could be anything different???

Mark Dominik and his scouting team deserved every single bit as much criticism for signing and cutting good and bad players alike as the Head Coach did. If he was a whipping boy and couldn’t stand beside his work or stand up for something he knew was right, then he shouldn’t have been there as the face of the organization talking so much.

  8. chickster Says:

Bennett might have been the difference here talk about laughing stock that’s what the last coach was

  9. holymoly Says:

    Schiano sucks !

  10. JT Says:

What a shame. Oh well its in the past how many more wins do you think Bennett could’ve got us anyway.

  11. Bill Says:

When many of us mentioned letting him walk, not bringing in John Abraham-types prior to camp would be a bad idea, Joe poo-pooed on those comments.

  12. Cannon Says:

Roster moves like these are just one of the many reasons as to why the Bucs are one of the worst teams in the NFL.

Let’s all hold a glass up high in a toast that the new coach and gm will turn things around.

  13. ROBERT6 Says:

meh, I’m actually happy for the guy. he would not have gotten a ring or made enough of a difference here.

hats off to him….unlike a few others named talib, free, and winslow who were PITA’s

Bennett seemed like a lunch pail guy who kept is head down.

talib AGAIN let his team down in the playoffs. 2 yrs in a row!!!!!!!!

  14. mpmalloy Says:

    He’s gone oh I, oh I, oh I
I’d better learn how to face it
    He’s gone oh I, oh I’d
I’d pay the devil to replace him
He’s gone, oh I, what went wrong

    *sigh*

  15. chickster Says:

Why would you not want Bennett

  16. Patrickbucs Says:

Even if he stayed how many extra wins would we have gotten? Who really knows, it wasn’t just the Bucs decision I do not think though. We had to offer more most likely for him to stay.

  17. chickster Says:

Its just the fact they didn’t get it

  18. Ed Says:

    Joe, hard but the truth

  19. Ryan Says:

Joe… I beleive the current view is that the Galzers did not want Bennett back and Schiano did. And who said Bennet wanted to sign the same one year deal with the Bucs?

  20. Hawk Says:

I understand your dismay at losing a productive player, but the statement, “… for no good reason.”, cannot be true. Coaches live and die by wins and losses. Therefore *any* player who could help keep your job is a player you want to keep. Sometimes, however, there are ‘other’ issues that override the talent. *If* Schiano thought Bennett could help his defense (and therefore help the team win), then he would have kept him. Something else must have factored into the equation for Schiano to get rid of a player who could help him keep his job.
    Just sayin’.
BTW, I don’t mind clicking on an article so see the rest of it. It allows me to scroll thru the ‘home’ page a little faster. I’ve noticed some negative opinions and thought I’d give an opposing view.

  21. Keirster Says:

I love this site…in fact Keirster keeps it on all day and just refreshes from time to time. What bugs Keirster is Joe’s need to beat a dead horse until it is deep into the earth’s mantle! I totally agree…letting Bennett go was a mistake, but it is done and the men who did it are gone.

Let us think kindly and warmly about the staff and players that ARE here and hope for the best from all of them.

    GO BUCS!!!

  22. rdbucfan Says:

    Joe,

Will we get to thank you if Glennon gets run out of town?

Last I remember Teflon Dom had control of final 53 not Schiano. That’s ok make excuses for your boy Joe.

If Cowboys fans were as knowledgeable as Joe, The little pup and most fans they would have run there 3 time Super bowl winning 1st ballot hall of fame quarterback out of town after his 2nd year. Which was statistically worse than Glennon’s first year. I wont even go into his first season. But he was the number 1 overall pick not a lousy 3rd rounder.

The only Mike Glennon mob I see is the one that threw a tantrum when Gosh Freeboy was benched and can’t wait to run Glennon out on a rail.

Part of me wants to see Glennon go somewhere else with a good coaching staff and succeed just so I can laugh at all of the armchair talent evaluators out there that are so sure Johnny Boyziel will be a hall of famer that we should mortgage our future to trade up for him. Kind of like when we mortgaged our future to get Gruden. Those 2 firsts and 2 seconds didn’t hurt at all. They can just bring in free agents to make up for it. Man that sounds familiar.

  23. rdbucfan Says:

    Their superbowl qb not there

  24. nate Says:

Joe its time to make a new thread.. bring back michael bennet

Sports reporting/writing/commentary is a fluid situation with ever changing facts and information, which, of course, you already know.–Joe

  26. PRBucFan Says:

Schiano didn’t want him and not Dom?

    Lol Bush-League

  27. PRBucFan Says:

    THANKS DOM!

    lol

Neither of these guys are Bucs anymore, old news

  28. Investwax Says:

It was said 2 years ago that Schiano was Dominick’s first coaching selection. And, if Schiano didn’t work out, Dominick might get a second chance, like many GMs do. After watching Bennett play, I can’t help but think we should’ve rid ourselves of Dominick before he had a chance to perform the Schiano Experiment.

For the record, I was onboard with the Schiano hiring and didn’t not think poorly of Dominick until the first game of this season.

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This is really sad….to continue to dwell on the past….will this go well into next year and beyond?

You know…every time I think of going 0-26 it hurts….so, I don’t think about it anymore.

Schiano and Dominick were fired…they paid the price for their mistakes.

The next thing we can whine about is all of the great players we could have drafted but chose someone else.

  30. buchead407 Says:

we have made huge coaching upgrades…we lost 3 to 4 games bc of coaching alone. Get a decent gm and we should be in good shape moving forward

  31. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Do you hear me whining that Freeman is gone? No. Because what is done is done.

That’s how I view the Michael Bennett thing as well.

    Move on, people.

  32. Chris Says:

Sorry joe but this falls on Dom. There’s a reason Dom hyped bowers and Schiano didn’t play him bc he stunk. If schiano really thought bowers was better he’d be playing and starting.

You lay no responsibility on the pop tart.

  33. Yeogib Says:

Look at Dom’s drafts before Schiano….

  34. nick j Says:

once again joe since I highly doubt you ever put the pads on, mike Bennett is average at best. he should be the least of our worrys

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It doesn’t really matter who is at fault for Bennett leaving….could be Butch Davis for all we know….but he is flat-a$$ gone!!! Get over it…

  36. Eric Says:

I think he had a torn rotator cuff, which is why he didn’t get a big K even from Seattle. That may have played a factor.

But, it was a bad move, one among many.

Lovie is gonna fix this mess. Quickly I think.

  37. knucknbuc Says:

Said it when it happened that it was a bad move letting a solid player of bennetts caliber go. Only 2 idiots would have let a player like that go for a solid deal like the one he got. O that’s right we just had dumb and dumber Running our team. Ugh at least we can only go up from here

  38. mark2001 Says:

rdbuc…we won a SB…as Madden said…something to the effect that Gruden was well worth it for that reason alone, as I remember. I agree that we paid for that dearly for a few years….but how old would most of those draft picks be now? In their thirties. So that part is dismal “water under the bridge”.

Regarding Glennon…let him compete…see where the chips fall. Teams have won SB’s with less than I think he will be when he develops. But I do think we need to draft another…in the 2nd or 4th round…or third if we can get one? Yes. But anyone that wants to show him the door at this point is making a big mistake.

  39. Kalind Says:

This was def a Schiano call, not a Dom call. I can just hear Bennett laughing in meetings when Greg told him they were going to stunt on most plays. And whatdya know? He’s bounced. My way or the highway Schiano g

  40. nate_tweetz Says:

Both Schiano and Dominick are to blame for the Bennett departure. If Schiano didn’t want him, Dominick had the power to tel him “too bad”. That move cost us a good pass rusher and an opportunity to sign this TE brother Martellus. Bennett was talking of the prospect of him and his brother playing for the Bucs before the Bucs showed no interest in retaining him. We would of been alot better this year if both of those guys were on our roster.

  41. $acbuc$ Says:

Greg Schiano and Josh McDaniel are Bellicheat spies. They work for Bill looks at how Josh did Denver and Greg did us. I got ripped on this 3 ring circus site when I said Bill backed the hiring of Schiano so he can have a joint practice. Where he came into One Buc and evaluated all our players. He seen that Talib and Blount was all he need to get over the hump. Ya clowns! Now argue how Talib is always hurt and Blount was a non-factor in the AFC Championship. I see Bill, Rex, Pete got better production out of those cancer like players huh! Not to mention Bennett and Winslow who most of you fans wanted 86d for not listening to that moron.

That sucka got rid of Price after he lost his family members in a driveby in L.A.

Thats some weak sauce. Ring Leader!

All you Maggotrons do is run people out of town and when they succeed elsewhere you have a solution to what happen previously.STFU!!!!!!!!

Don’t forget dom for blowing that- he was in charge I know the medi loved him cause he treated y’all with respect but he was so awful.

  43. Joe Says:

    Pretty accurate.

  44. Destinjohnny Says:

Who’s fAult was it for the bucs drafting bowers? Not drafting Jordan and taking clayborn
Who’s fault was it drafting mark Barron over Luke k? Man I could play this game all day – joe u are on the wrong side of history mate

I think my iq dropped reading this. What?

  46. Chris Says:

    Joe ,

Where is your proof this was all schiano? Last time I checked Dom had all power except who was active on game days.

Dom could have franchised Bennett. Dom could have extended him as well. Why not? Had the chance to do it in season. He even said he liked the Tampa area. So what happened? You really think schiano chose Bowers over Bennett? Not even close. Why else do you think Myron Lewis stayed so long? Dom wanted to get the most out of him. Fail. Same with bowers , who will probably be cut by the new regime when they realize he sucks.

  47. Eric Says:

Dominik can make his shrewd moves from whatever baseball card shop he opens up.

Thank goodness the man can’t do anymore damage. We might make it through a season without setting some NFL record for futility.

  48. lurker Says:

so joe, we just take your word for it without evidence?

he was an injured d-end that wanted more money and multiple years. no one gave him multiple years or a lot of money.

    how are the facts different?

  49. $acbuc$ Says:

I guess I have been sleep for the last 17 years because we have had 2 good drafts in franchise history. The year we got Sapp and Brooks and the year we got Barron, Martin, and David. All the other drafts we got 1 out of 7 right. Wow! When the other teams in the NFL were just piling up on players we were trying to get that 1 gem. lol

Stop me when I’m lying. From that bust kenyatta walker till now we’ve never been elite at drafting talent. We have passed on HOF players every draft developing bums to get traded or end up out the league after the bucs pay them boat loads of treasure.

That’s why I coined that term” UNTALENTED TALENT EVALUATORS”.

I wonder how much say so did Shelton have during the drafting process. I liked Quarles as a player for stepping into the middle linebacking job knowing he was a better sam. I will go out on a limb and say his play at the Mike made us a little bit better that year we won the SB. He was to small to take them olinemen in his grill every down but he showed up on Sunday and in the playoffs.

My Point is he KNOWS the organization has never had a elite Sam since he played there and he wasn’t elite. Plus we have never had a monster in the middle since our new linebacker coach Get Hit Hardy Nickerson played there in the early 90’s. I could be wrong but I’going off of my old memory banks. I think we got 1 year of Brooks and Hardy then the bucs traded Nickerson like we had backers to spear. I’m so waiting on the day when a player goes down for the bucs that the second stringer comes in and we don’t miss a beat.

I bet Lovie beat every draft we have ever had in franchise history in just a few months. Watch!!!

  50. Thomas Says:

Dont forget, he was hurt and didnt want to be here.

  51. KC Phoenix Says:

Should we not get a pretty decent compensatory pick in this years draft for Bennett?

  52. Willy D. Says:

Exhibit A indeed!! In hindsight, the shoulder injury excuse was a smokescreen. Lame. Raheem’s “tolerance” is wisdom Shiano should have heeded.

  53. Mike10 Says:

Moves like this are what has moved this franchise backwards..

  54. Paul Says:

Those of you saying Schiano didn’t make this move are naive. “Rock Star” was a joke for not building depth and not getting anything in return for good players we traded for peanuts, but I guarantee Schiano made the call on Bennett, Talib and Blount. Dom’s responsibility was just to get some compensation for them. Freeman was Schiano’s call too, met some resistance on the decision by the FO/Glazers I think? But that’s because they had more invested in him. If the HC has the power to get rid of the so-called Franchise QB, then he got rid of Talib Blount and could’ve requested Bennett get resigned.

  55. Buc'dUP Says:

How many more wins would Bennett have gotten us last year?????

  56. C. Alaka Says:

3 of Bennett’s 8.5 sacks came on the road…so please Joe w/ Bennett being some kind of game changer…yes he’s a solid DE but he has most of his sacks @ home in REALLY tough place where their home field advantage is 2nd to none…if he would’ve doubled on that number of sacks then I would’ve been impressed but he didn’t even get to double digits lol

  57. BoJim Says:

    Buc’dUP

    Ditto.
