Tedford Is High On Johnny Football

January 17th, 2014

The Bucs’ OC doesn’t hold back

Of course a seasoned offensive mind and renowned quarterbacks guru like Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford likes what he sees from America’s No. 1 college quarterback, Johnny Manziel.

Johnny Football has the goods. Just ask Nick Saban.

After talking about how important it is for a pro quarterback to have characteristics of  “it factor” and “competitive urge” and “the will to prepare” and “mental and physical toughness,” Tedford raved about the Texas A&M phenom during an appearance on WHFS-FM 98.7 today.

“I had a lot of opportunity to watch a lot of football both college and NFL and, you know, paid particular attention to not just schemes and systems, as far as football, but to look at the quarterbacks like Tahj Boyd and Derek Carr at Fresno State, and David Fales at San Jose, and Manziel and some of the others.”

“You know, they all play in different systems.  So, you know, the evaluation process with them, you like a Johnny Manziel, brings a lot to the table. He’s a great athlete.”

Tedford went on to say he’ll be studying how the 2014 QB class members might translate from their spread offenses to the NFL. “There are some very talented guys out there. I’m looking forward to evaluating them all, you know, on a deeper level.”

Joe wonders how much Lovie Smith and the Bucs scouting department will lean on Tedford to pick their next quarterback. Joe suspects it will be Tedford ranking the draft and free-agent class.

    Whelp, there ya have it.

Manchild will be our next QB… lol

  2. Arealbucsfan Says:

Dont see him falling to us

  3. Eric Says:

Definitely the best QB prospect by a long way.

Trade up and get him Lovie.

I for one don’t need anymore of the Mike Glennon show.

  4. PRBucFan Says:

    False

  5. Mbaby101 Says:

Sounds like Mike glennon is high on Johnny Football.http://t.co/Myhbo3BogD

  6. Architek Says:

    He won’t fall to 7!

  7. SeanyMac in SC Says:

No, no, no to Johny “spoiled rotten” football.

  8. Buxfan Says:

Why don’t you just change the name of this site already. Geez. joeinlovewithjohnny.com. Get your all news Johnny Football here. This is just another Tim Tebow situation ready to happen. I can’t wait to here Mike Mayock’s final verdict on this guy.

  9. Mike J Says:

Heard Phil Savage, ex-NFL scout/PPD-type, & GM on local radio. He does color for Bama & said he was very impressed w/ Manziel. Phil stood by Mr. Football & said he is a bit over 6 ft. & has very large hands. Savage was almost in awe of Johnny’s instincts; said he has eight eyes to avoid the rush.

  10. louden Says:

Imagine the Bucs could get a franchise QB and add very good pieces this year and finishing off, the build championship contender by end of the offseason 2015. Its real possible: 1st, do whatever it takes to get Teddy Bridgewater. He is the only ready, true Franchise QB (as much as i hate to use the F word). IQ, athletic, makes all the throws. 2nd step: Trade Revis and cut/trade others.. simply as that. Even selling the farm might be worth it, because Bucs can free up a ton of cap..

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Tedford likes many QBs including Glennon…I bet if he were asked what he thought about McCarron, Mettenberger, Garoppolo…he would have good things to say.

Notice he didn’t mention Bortles….probably means he likes him the most!!!

Tedford isn’t going to show his hand……

  13. louden Says:

+Teddy has got the character. All the other prospects have their flaws and aren´t worth it. Sure, teddy hasn´t the best deep ball, but that´s why you need a good WR core and/or good offensive coaching (plays, gameplan etc). Teddy makes calls at LOS like an young Manning AND has great escape ability and moves well in the pocket. Johnny Football is more hype than talent.. Not a sure thing by miles away.. Joe what you think about building around Teddy, even if it means selling the farm and getting rid of Revis (i would do it in half-a-heartbeat)

  14. RCH Says:

The Carr mention by Tedford is interesting because he is projected to be a late 1st round early 2nd round draft pick. Would the Bucs draft him high in the first if the other top 3 QBs are gone? If their number one priority is to get a QB right out the gate either draft, free agency, or both makes you wonder. Reason being is because they want “their guy” and the HC could be gone pretty quick without a quick turn around in today’s league. Just speculation. I would like us to take the top 3 QBs available if they fall to us at 7 if not best player on the board. I am not in favor of moving up just for some offseason action. Only one of the 4 QBs playing Sunday earning his way to a Superbowl was a 1st round pick.

  15. pick6 Says:

joe, is this the part where he “raved” about manziel?: “You know, they all play in different systems. So, you know, the evaluation process with them, you like a Johnny Manziel, brings a lot to the table. He’s a great athlete.”

didn’t see a take specific to manziel elsewhere in your quotes, so i wasn’t sure. but the above sounds pretty neutral and generic. by contrast (not drawing any conclusions), he was very specific about what he liked about glennon in previous interviews and what he thinks makes for a QB in the other quotes with this one. in the absence of any other quotes, i wouldn’t qualify coachspeak about systems and evaluations and the endorsement “great athlete” as any great clue on how much he likes manziel vs glennon, boyd, carr, or any other QB

  16. Orca Says:

I don’t suppose there’s a chance we’ll be able to go a day without hearing about Joe’s crush on Johnny Doucheball between now and the draft.

  17. Andrew 1 Says:

    @pick6

    lol, so true.

  18. Joe Says:

I don’t suppose there’s a chance we’ll be able to go a day without hearing about Joe’s crush on Johnny Doucheball between now and the draft.

Very much doubt it. Better buckle up. Draft is four months away.

  19. Andrew 1 Says:

I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

  20. The_Buc_Realist Says:

its a smoke screen, let the games begin gentlemen.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

I know a writer that is high off Johnny Football.

  22. bucfanjeff Says:

And at what point does he say he is “high” on him? Or is that joes interpretation?

At this time of year everyone talks about who they think is awesome.
    Smokescreen.

I guarantee you we other ideas at #7.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

The best QB in college football lives in Tallahassee and will not be available for the draft until 2015. Everyone in this class is a reach.

  24. Orca Says:

Well, I trust that Tedford will have his say on the QB prospects. I’m going to assume that if we draft Johnny Wankball, it will be with Tedford’s recommendation. That’ll be good enough for me.

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I really don’t get the hate for Johnny Football. Of course he’s a little arrogant and full of himself – but I got news for you, most guys with his kind of talent are that way. You just don’t always see it. His teammates love him, and he wins football games. He’s exciting as hell to watch, because he makes something out of nothing on a consistent basis. Not one person on this site is an NFL talent evaluator, so it’s great you have your opinion on how good he will be as a pro, but remember it’s just your opinion. Fact is, none of us know jack crap about him as far as his work ethic, attitude, intelligence, or his raw talent. What I have seen by watching him on Saturdays leads me to believe he will be very successful in today’s NFL. Today’s NFL is basically a copycat of college football, so I see no reason why he wouldn’t. The only real concern I would have would be his size, but that’s where Mike Glennon would serve as a very valuable backup.

And we aren’t getting Winston. Never gonna happen in a million years, even if he raped 2 more women. He’ll be gone #1, and we gave away our shot at #1 when we fired Schiano.

  26. SAMCRO Says:

    Thanks, Mbaby101 for the link.

I really enjoyed that. It’s a shame that some fans (including Joe) want to move on without giving MG8 a second season under a different situation. MG8 is very smart. He is Manning, Bradee smart, and given the chance, I think Mike will master his knowledge on defensive schemes and will become a great future leader. It would be a shame to watch him end up on another team and become their franchise QB for next decade. O-line should be our #1 priority.

  27. PRBucFan Says:

    Negative ghost rider

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @SAMCRO,

Not being a smart arse here, but do you really believe that Glennon is that good, or are you just hoping he’s that good? In other words, would you put money on Glennon being a franchise QB? You say he’s smart, and I’m by no means saying he isn’t, but how exactly do you know he’s smart like Brady or Manning? Because he had good grades in college? College smarts don’t necessarily translate to athletically smart. Until he throws for 300 yards (commonplace in today’s NFL), let’s not go putting his name in the same sentence as two of the best QB’s to ever play in the NFL, OK?

  29. PRBucFan Says:

“even if he raped 2 more women.”

He’d be number 1 on the prison bait list lol

  30. SteveBucsFan Says:

This is all you need to know about Johnny Football. The little girl is almost taller!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CT_UYf_E14&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Carr is the way to go.

  31. bucrightoff Says:

Mike Glennon is pretty lanky, and compared to Johnny Football he’s FatMarcus. With the mediocre O-Line we have, all drafting Johnny Football would accomplish is ensuring he’ll be on IR by week 8. Johnny has at least 25 more pounds of muscle, not just weight, he has to add. If you caugh it in the national title game, Manziel and Tebow stood side by side and all I could think is “Lavonte David or Navarro Bowman would end Johnny’s career on his first hit”.

  32. oldfart44 Says:

    @Hawaiian Buc :

There are either a lot of Puritans, wannabe’s, hypocrites, or I don’t want anyone who is young to have fun, except me types.

I find this attitude astounding. This is the NFL. I want a QB that wins; I could give a sh*t if he fuc*s, drinks, or smokes dope. Just don’t get caught. 🙂

  33. Buxfan Says:

    @PRBucFan

You will not hear from Johnny Manziel and any of his antics until after the draft. He promise to not be active on twitter until after the draft. So from now til draft time, we would be getting a watered down Johnny Football. After the draft, all hell will break loose. (HERE’S JOHNNY!)
I just hope that the Glaziers and the coaching staff don’t fall for the banana in the tail pipe.

  34. Solinor Says:

Every day there’s a post on here about Johnny Manziel. The kid is a trust fund baby who is going to be clocked in the NFL so hard his trust fund will feel it. The next rg3/vick, please ANY ONE but Manziel!!! I’ll take Garoppolo over him any day!!

  35. SAMCRO Says:

    Hawaiian Buc ask me,

do you really believe that Glennon is that good, or are you just hoping he’s that good?

I’m Hoping, … last season was tough on him. He was under siege the entire season, but through it all he showed a great deal of maturation. He maynot be gifted with the scrabbling ability of a Wilson or a Manziel, but his decision making while under duress was admirable. If given an offensive line to protect him in the pocket, I believe Mike can pick apart a defense.
    _____________________________________________________________
You say he’s smart, and I’m by no means saying he isn’t, but how exactly do you know he’s smart

Yes, his grades in college. …Plus listening to his interviews.

Bet Manziel couldn’t hold a candle to Glennon intellectually.

  36. Hawaiian Buc Says:

RG3 and Vick have one thing over Glennon – playoffs. At this point, I’d take a one legged RG3 over Glennon, based off what I’ve seen so far.

  37. Hawaiian Buc Says:

As for people worried about his height, how has the lack of height bothered Drew Brees and Russell Wilson? Are we starting him on an NBA team or a NFL team?

  38. PRBucFan Says:

    Manchild isn’t a Buc, won’t be one.

Waste of time discussing/ investing any time into him

A 2 legged RG3 did worse than Glennon this season by the way lol.

    BRIDGEWATER OR BUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @PRBucFan,

No, he was one legged. And I’d still take him a million times over Glennon, and so would you. If not, get your head examined.

  40. PRBucFan Says:

    Maybe 😉

  41. Eric Says:

I’d sure hate to be judged on my character based upon some photos of me partying in college.

But I guess you guys were all baking cookies and drinking milk on the weekends in your college days, getting ready for lab on Monday.

Surprised you guys can even procreate.

Arrogant? Think Sapp wasn’t that? And none of you even know this kid.

    Don’t get it.

  42. PRBucFan Says:

Just the way the cookie crumbles…

  43. Buxfan Says:

Manziel is nowhere close to a Brees as a QB. Maybe he’s close to Russell athletically. I don’t thank he has the dedication to the game like Russell has. We will hear more about Manziel as draft get closer. This will not be the site to get a true assessment of Manziel.

  44. Thomas Says:

Dont trade up- we can still get a good QB. We need the picks. If its possible, trade down and get more.

Reading this whole thread, the comment by pick6 jumped out. The attention-grabbing headline isn’t backed up by the blog post. So I clicked on the headline and Joe got one more page view, but this type of thing is normally beneath Joe, thankfully.

You guys have way too much time on your hands. Feel free to click through the link and listen to Tedford’s tone in the audio. –Joe

  47. lurker Says:

    i wanna qb.

carr can make the throws…but his bowl game was unimpressive, but i think the team was disappointed in their 1 defeat, at the time. he is impressive but i didn’t like the int’s in their loss.

  48. lurker Says:

manziel can make the throws Wilson cannot. manziel’s accuracy is awesome, and hits receivers in stride.

  49. lurker Says:

as i said in another thread…

this is our best chance to get a better qb. those are harder to find. o-line, d-line, te, and what ever other perceived hole there is can be achieved in free agency or the coming years.

  50. PRBucFan Says:

He’s already the best QB in NFL history…

  51. Buxfan Says:

What I get is what G.M’s have talked about when they evaluate players coming out of college. I do know that teams JUST DON’T LOOK AT GAME FILM TO SEE IF A PLAYER WILL BE GOOD THE TEAM. They do look at how you are on the off field. There is a lot of questions he will need to answer when he sit down in front of NFL teams. What has happen to players that have had a questionable past coming into a draft? Do any sane grown up on this site could trust this kid with the keys to the Ferrari?

  52. Eric Says:

That’s the same mentality that caused Sapp to drop to us in the draft. Hall of Famer.

What “off field” problems are you referring to?

The disorderly conduct shoving, with a false license, and signing autographs which he got no money for?

    Wooooooo the horror!

The NCAA made him sit out one half v Rice.

  53. PRBucFan Says:

HE’S ALREADY THE BEST QB IN NFL HISTORY!!!!!

    YOUR SO RIGHT!!!!

  54. Eric Says:

    No, Mike Glennon is!

  55. PRBucFan Says:

    MANZIEL IS SO AMAZING!!!!

HE OWNS ALL RECORDS THAT COULD EVER BE OWNED BY A QB IN THE NFL!

    O M G

HE’S ALREADY GOT 6 SUPER BOWL RINGS!

    lol… s m h

  56. Clowney Says:

I keep hearing comparisons between Manziel and Wilson or Brees. I don’t necessarily believe in comparisons but if I were to make one, I would say Johnny Football reminds me of Joe Montana.

I thought Manziel would fall into the 2nd round but it appears I’m wrong. Bridgewater is falling, Bortles is rising and Manziel just might be the #1 overall.

I’m hoping Clowney gets another speeding ticket or gets nabbed with some weed so he’ll fall to #7 but the Bucs should absolutely grab Manziel or Bridgewater if Clowney gets stolen away from the Bucs.

Just imagine if Megatron hung on to that ball? Meaningless wins made me want to vomit like Freeman after the gauntlets.

    Thanks, Little General.

    Well that was fun 😀

At this point after hearing Tedford say that calling Glennon the starter was premature on his radio segment today, my hopes are high that we draft a QB in the first round.

  60. buchead407 Says:

I hope we land jfb. If anything it’d be fun to watch

  61. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Lurker

was that some kind of Euphemism? if it was, get your mind out of the gutter a hole.

I get the impression that Manziel is one of those kinds of players that you hate if hes not on your, but you like if hes on your team. I mean what kind of dip sh!t goes to a rival teams drinking party and expect not to get a negative reaction? only Johnny.

  62. Andrew 1 Says:

if you pull off a stunt like that, there’s a word for that, its called a punk. That’s why I don’t like him, its because he’s a punk. plain and simple.

  63. Andrew 1 Says:

all you got to do is google Johnny Manziel’s problems, and you’ll get a whole list, page after page. After that try and see if you can say Manziel is a QB you want leading your team with a straight face.

  64. lurker Says:

glad you can judge everyone without knowing them, Andrew.

  65. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ lurker

FIRST of all you dont even know me, so dont act like you do. If you knew me, you would know Im not one to judge. If it had nothing to do with the bucs, then I would care less how he acted or what kind of person he was. Im strictly looking at this as a QB I want leading our team. Given all his off, and on, the field problems, His punk a$s is not what I want leading our team. After that, its a free country, act however you want to act and good luck to you.

  66. Andrew 1 Says:

but don’t pretend he is some kind of upstanding citizen. If you do, your lying to yourself. I doesn’t take a person who judges to see that.

  71. PRBucFan Says:

  72. Drew Thomas Says:

Every an Redford mentioned WILL not be drafted by us. I said it before Joe Bucs Fan, when Big Dog brought this guy up, I have been saying this IS the best qb in the draft, yes he is really raw, but quick quick release, hits guys in stride, extremely accurate, and the always get overlooked, because of a small school like Eastern Illinios. All the supposed experts say he is a 4-5 round pick. But when I just said his strengths, IT SCREAMS NFL QB. Oh and Joe Bucs Fan, and big dog, I have been saying JIMMY GAROPPOLO FOR THE WHOLE SEASON. When it comes to talent in the draft, he is the most talented qb by far. Watch the shrine game today at 4, then you can tell me I’m right.

  73. mcBuc Says:

Eric said all that needs to be said on this one.

  74. Jim Says:

This is our one opportunity to get a legit QB. Trade up and get him. Sell the farm. Once Lovie starts winning 8-11 games a year we’ll never sniff a top ten pick again.

  75. Chris Says:

Joe I still like Jimmy Garapolo in round 2 and get Eric Ebron or Watkins at 7. Garapolo just seems like a perfect fit in our new offense. Smart quick decision maker who is accurate.

  76. Hawk Says:

    Two points to consider…
#1. Tedford is likely blowing smoke to see if there are any teams desperate enough to trade up and give the Bucs extra picks.
#2 Just how good is Tedford at recognizing ‘NFL’ caliber QBs? I admit that he had a long line of great ‘college’ QBs, but what is his batting average when you start counting how many became ‘NFL franchise’ QBs?

  79. Bone Dr Says:

Screw Johnny football, this draft is all about Clowney. Clowney is that DE we’ve so desperately been looking for the last 10 years. With an exceptional defense and Glennon managing the game and continuing to improve we will be able to win. I say we trade up to get Clowney, if he doesn’t fall to us. If we don’t see the improvement out of Glennon in his second year than we target our franchise QB in a very QB rich draft class the following year. Johnny is good, but I’m sorry he’s just to much of a gamble for a team who desperately needs to get in the playoffs.

  80. lurker Says:

mariota sucks and Winston is a 1-hit wonder right now. so where is the qb rich draft coming from, hundley?

  81. Bone Dr Says:

Lurker……..Really , I think Stevie Wonder could see QB talent better than you man. Those are three top prospects led by one who just led his team to a championship as a freshman. That would be one more championship than mr Manziel. I’d take next years class over this one in a heart beat.
