Bucs Add A Star Cornerback

January 10th, 2014

The man coaching Darrelle Revis this season will bring some serious street cred.

This evening the Bucs announced the hiring of Gill Byrd, who will coach Bucs cornerbacks.

He was a two-time Pro Bowler for the Chargers.

Byrd is a Lovie Smith guy. He spent seven seasons for the Bears under Lovie. His last job in Chicago was assistant defensive backs coach and safeties coach in 2012.

A four-time All-Pro, Byrd, 52, played 10 seasons (1983-92) with the San Diego Chargers, retiring as the team’s all-time leader in interceptions (42) a record he still holds.

As Joe referenced earlier, Leslie Frazer’s specialty is defensive backs and he, too, was a stud NFL cornerback. Joe’s real eager to see what the Bucs defensive backfield looks like this season.

Well I just don’t know what to think of all this. I need the Chosen One to comment and tell us all how we should think. AND if we are even ALLOWED to talk about the CB coach. After all, we didn’t have his permission to talk about GM’s on the GM article, because the whine baby thinks its old.

It is hard not to get excited. Even if you don’t like some of the hires Lovie has made (for me, like QB coach Arroyo, only bc he has no NFL experience). In actuality, Lovie has spent a year putting his plan together and Identifying key personnel to implement his plan.

Lovie may not be a great offensive mind (we know he will kick butt on D though!). I believe he has worked hard over the past year to try to develop a plan that will work.

Now, if we only had a QB

  3. Architek Says:

I love this decision – my uncle Danny played with him for the Chargers and told me about him when I was a young boy!

The Bucs may be the surprise team of the league next year!

When I first read the title I thought we picked up Peanut Tillman. I don’t care how old he is, the man can punch out a ball with the best of them.

    @Chef Paul
hmmmm, I detect serious sarcasm. lol

  6. Macabee Says:

This is serious street cred. Just as important, he son is Jairus Byrd 3 time pro bowler from Buffalo that is a free agent this year. I’m not going to get in the middle of the should we trade marked man Dashon Goldson and go after Byrd, but it is sure to follow!

  7. Robbie_G Says:

One thing I LOVE about this staff, they bring men to the table who have danced the dance. Lovie, this has me very excited. Well done!

  8. Chef Paul Says:

LMAO Harry. They say you cant tell through text. Well I found a way!!

  9. PRBucFan Says:

Jairus Byrd, his son, is FA this offseason 😉

Not that we need a safety, if only this would have happened a year before the Hawk came lol.

I like him and all but I don’t know how much longer he’ll last if he can’t start hitting the strike zone on those tackles.

  10. Celly Says:

@Macabee, as soon as I read this article, i went to rotoworld and saw the same exact thing. even if we don’t get rid of the walking 15 yard penalty, he could still be a good pickup for CB/S…

  11. PRBucFan Says:

Didn’t bother reading the comments till after, my bad Mac, but I’m on the same page as you bro lol

  12. Chef Paul Says:

Good call Macabee. I knew I recognized that Byrd name from somewhere, but couldn’t put my finger on it. Thanks for bringing that to light before I strained my little brain trying to figure it out.

    @Chef Paul
In ‘here’ its funny how ppl cannot have a difference of opinion without attacking the other person as being unintelligent, or having inferior knowledge about the game compared to them.

  14. Vic Says:

Great hire, and maybe his son would want to join daddy; he is a FA. Jarius would look nice in the Pewter and Red.

  15. BoJim Says:

    Good call Lovie.

  16. Eric Says:

    Excellent hire.

This man has legit connections in the league and coaches who were previously on his staff want to be again.

    Very good sign.

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Years ago my two sons attended a football camp with Gil Bird & Martin Bayless. Amazing human being. Great Hire! GO BUCS!!!!

This man use to give John Elway nightmares back in the late 80’s early 90’s.

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

As you can see he’s a phenomenal job with his 3× All-Pro son Jairus Byrd

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*As you can see he’s done a phenomenal job with his 3× All-Pro son; Jairus Byrd.

  20. Cody Says:

This is a sick coaching staff…Lovie seems to be laying the pieces in place…
Hopefully Byrd can persuade his son Jarius to come play for us next year…

  21. Eastsidebuc Says:

Oh snap!!! That’s Jarius Byrd pops??? Always liked Jarius Kinda wanted him instead of Dashon Goldson. Oh well…

  23. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Jairus Byrd made nearly $7 million in 2013. He misses too many tackles to be worth that much. But he is only 27, and working with his father might bring him down in price.

Getting him would be a smart move, since at some point Goldson will likely get a four game suspension. If Jairus does well enough, he could take over that starting role.

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I like the hire. He obviouly taught his som well enough to become a probowler. That means he can teach up Banks and help Revis back to 100% again.

    A definite “feel good” hire.

  25. trubucfan22 Says:

Star cb has a safety for a son? He must be disappointed. Lol

  26. Brandon Says:

I remember Gill Byrd extremely well. Very average speed at best, not great size, but he could play. Flawless technique, physical… these are traits our CBs need in bunches.

  27. fastclipper Says:

I wonder if they could pull off trading Byrd for Goldson. Like Donte Whitner said in an interview that all Goldson wanted to do was kill people. Hence, all the personal fouls.

From what I gather anyway, Goldson is more of a strong safety type.

I am so thoroughly optimistic for the coming season.

  28. Kevin ramsey Says:

Girl Byrd is my favorite corner of all time.been a chargers fan forever.too bad Byrd retired 1 year short from playing in superbowl29.maybe Steve young wouldn’t of thrown 6 tds that day
