Report: End Did Not Surprise Mark Dominik

January 11th, 2014

Joe is a little late on this interesting tidbit. Joe apologizes.

Prior to losing to the Saints to end the season, former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik knew the end was near. It was just a mere formality when Team Glazer asked him to clean out his desk, per the Custodian of Canton, eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune.

During the weekly “Kaufman’s Korner” with the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on the show that bears his name, “Mad Dog Unleashed,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio, Kaufman noted Dominik was getting damning feedback from Team Glazer prior to the season finale, indicating that his two-decades-long tenure with the Bucs was minutes from ending.

“I saw the general manager before the game, Mark Dominik, and I didn’t like the vibes I was getting. He had just come from the field, Chris. Now listen to this: He had just come up from the field where the Glazers were wandering around, as they do, an hour before the game, and they had a talk. But you know what? Mark Dominik wasn’t getting the answers he wanted, he wasn’t getting the assurances he wanted from ownership. Chris, when I saw him a few moments before kickoff — and this was my way of telling you that game had nothing to do with firing Schiano and Dominik, that was in the works before the 42-17 pasting.

“I felt they were tied. They were both going to stay or both going to go. I think both men felt that way and I felt even before that game the decision had been made they were gone.”

So the final game did not determine Schiano’s fate. There was word that the Bucs reached out to Bill Cowher back in October to take over the team.

The demise of Dominik was still a surprise to Joe. Remember, you crazy Father Dungy lovers, you know who you are, the ones that still insist with this nonsense that Chucky won with Father Dungy’s players, you better be saying the same thing next year if Lovie Smith wins — that Lovie won with Dominik’s players.

    Lol. True joe, so true.

  2. Jon Says:

I gotta agree with joe on that too

  3. blackmagic00 Says:

Actually I’m going to bang the drum that lovie won with the dreams team hahahahah

  4. SAMCRO Says:

Unless there is a complete roster turnover, if Lovie makes the playoffs next year, it would absolutely be with Dom’s and Greg’s guys.

  5. BucsQcCity Says:

I’m pretty sure that if Lovie wins next year, the roster will have changed significantly. There’s so many holes and lack of depth that we can’t even think about the playoffs

  6. Patrick in VA Says:

If we go from 4-12 to a super bowl them they can say whatever they want about winning with whoever’s players. I’m not worried about who gets credit for what. I just want to win

  7. SteveBucsFan Says:

    Well said Patrick

  8. BucfaninMi Says:

It’s too bad, I think Shiano has a great eye for players. He had no tact when coaching men. He would make a very good GM. I believe that Shiano had his hands all over the last 2 drafts. It’s no coincidence that they suddenly got all this talent, It’s not like Dom just got it! He wasn’t good at evaluating players.

  9. bucsfan13 Says:

    you mean schiano’s players

  10. stevek Says:

We are long over due to start winning.

So, just because we have stunk it up for Dominick’s reign as GM, collecting numerous top 10 draft picks, Dominick will get credit if Lovie starts winning?

Our SB was Gruden’s, but Dungy was getting us to the playoffs regularly.

Dominick won 10 games, once, and never got us to the playoffs.

I think the Buccaneers have the chance to make the playoffs next year, just because it’s been several years.

  11. DMAD1 Says:

Thank GOD ! Now we can get to winning again!

  12. The_Buc_Realist Says:

The only surprise is that anyone still thinks this clown was doing a good job.

  13. bigpoppabuc Says:

I feel if Dominik were still GM we’d be in good shape. He was very good at managing the cap and making trades. The Revis deal is just unheard of in this business and we’ve still got cap space to keep the guys we want and even bring a FA or two.

  14. stevek Says:

    bigpoppabuc,

You would honestly entrust/expect Dominick to get this roster up to a competetive level?

We have no depth, pass rush, TE, O-Line, 3rd WR and etc…

Dominick kept our salary cap in a good place, but that is about it. We are still on the outside of the playoffs looking in. Enter Lovie.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Joe says
“So the final game did not determine Schiano’s fate.”

Well, that’s not fact though, just opinion. Ira’s opinion. He may be right about the reason Mark acted like that, or he may not be. It could have been unrelated.

I do think he was right, but again, it’s not fact. It is opinion.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

stevek….yup no depth across the board!

  17. JonBuc Says:

If there would have been a way to keep Dom in the same way McKay was moved over/ named President of Football Operations by Arthur Blank Check…I would have been for it. Usually doesnt work that way though…change was in order.

  18. Jason Says:

BucfaninMi, I agree with you that Schiano seemed to have an excellent eye for players. However, that eye may have been heavily influenced by the fact he just came out of college where he had done recruiting and scouting. He may not have had that “great eye” under normal circumstances.

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    BucsQcCity Says
“I’m pretty sure that if Lovie wins next year, the roster will have changed significantly. There’s so many holes and lack of depth that we can’t even think about the playoffs.”

Wow, do you even know this roster????

Defense only needs a Defensive End and a good backup safety for when Goldson gets suspended for 4 games or more.

Offense has many pieces in place. 2 starting WRs, a good stable of RBs, a suitable tackle and guard. An up and coming TE.

All the offense really needs is for Nicks to get healthy or replace, a RT, a second TE worth a darn and a good slot WR along the lines of Ike Hilliard (who is retired; I mean like him). And, of course, a QB.

So, in starters, we need a TE, RT, OG, and MAYBE a starter TE…and a DE.

Six players out of 22. This team is loaded with talent when you consider the 16 players that are good starters.

And if Carl Nicks pans out, it will be one more great starter. I wish him the best, but if the rumors are true, he’ll be lucky to play again.

So, I guess if you consider 5-6 players being needed, you may have a point.

Personally I think Underwood should remain as depth. He may not be starting material, but most backups are not. Eric Page did not return any kicks for TDs but he otherwise was a great returner for being a rookie. He at least should get a second year of development, especially under Lovie.

While I agree there are some bad players on hte team, most of those bad players were never intended to be more than depth. Injuries put them in extended starting roles.

  20. Clowney Says:

They should have fired the Little General at the bye week.

Dominick just had bad karma for the massacre that occurred when he took control. His contract was written in blood.

I believe the New Smith Order will be ok.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think Dom’s drafts mysteriously improved the last two years….I don’t know if it was Schiano….Davis or a combination of the two…but it wasn’t Dominick.
Managing cap space isn’t the primary job description….winning is, and Dominick was a loser.
The $hit will hit the fan when I post this but….here goes…
I think there was more of a case to keep Schiano than Dominick. Continuity, developing talent….the team stayi9ng together through adversity…..I think the gaping holes in the lineup are on Dominick. You don’t want me to post a list of “Dominick’s Draft Deaths”….its just plain ugly…..
I’ll give you just two names of the very many….Myron Lewis and Luke Stocker.

  22. Investwax Says:

While I am one that says Gruden won with Dungy’s players, I do not believe Dungy’s would have brought us the Super Bowl. It took the Gruden shake-up to push the players, including the ones brought in for Gruden’s first year, to get the trophy.

I’d feel the same way next year. In fact, I hope I get to feel that way next year. Will be glad to say it was won with Dominick’s and Schiano’s core. But don’t anyone kid themselves, Gruden was coaching that first year, not Dungy’s.
Lovie will be coaching next year. None of our players will be holding onto the tutorage of Schiano to press themselves next year.

  23. William Says:

One last time Dungy fan club!

    Sam Wyche drafted:

John Lynch, Derrick Brooks and Warren Sapp

Dungy’s defense and Gruden’s offense and players (7 starters on offense) acquire by Gruden won our Super Bowl. Now that the facts are clear can we bury this now?????

  24. Jon Says:

I still remember a quote by Schiano after 2012 draft saying he didn’t have much to do with it because he didn’t have the time. I swear if any of you lived in Atlanta like me, you’d have fired the GM two years ago based off his drafts and free agent signings. Lovie did so well in Chicago with the draft. Looking forward to this one

  25. mac Says:

    Oh come on JOE!

    Winning with Mark Dominik’s players?
    J. Freeman – BUST
    D. Penn – Overpaid
    A. Benn – Bust
    D. Bowers – Bust
    L. Stocker – Bust
    B. Price – Bust
    A. Clayborn – Barely average
    C. Nicks – ooooops he had the bad toe before he got here
    J. Trueblood – nice extension!
    E. Wright – great FA pick up
    M. Lewis – Bust
anyone drafted from 2009-2012 except G. McCoy and a fullback
    D. Revis – overpaid plus gave up a first and third round draft choice

    You mean those players JOE?

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How in the world can you draft a QB with ADHD?….or, Josh was “diagnosed” after he was drafted….nevertheless….a major mistake that cost the Bucs dearly.
    I’ll throw in another name or two….Arrelious Benn….Kyle Moore…

  27. ander Says:

how can you be surprise when your record is 28 and 51 AS A Gm?? results speak for itself. either way thanks for landing us lavonte david and gerald mccoy.

  28. Andrew 1 Says:

It was time for them both to go, and I applaud the Glazer’s for recognizing that and having the balls to pull the trigger because I honestly didn’t think they were going to do it, at least not for another season.

  29. Pruritus Ani Says:

True enough Joe….. fair is fair. There will be some who will be incensed, but facts are stubborn things.

  30. Couch Fan Says:

It makes me laugh when I hear someone say Revis is over paid. Who in this league isn’t? That is only an issue if we have cap issues which we dont. Such a pointless statement.

Anyways, I to, thought Dom would be perfect for Lovie. All he has to do is manage the cap and let Lovie and his team decide the personnell.

  31. Rob Says:

“The demise of Dominik was still a surprise to Joe. Remember, you crazy Father Dungy lovers, you know who you are, the ones that still insist with this nonsense that Chucky won with Father Dungy’s players, you better be saying the same thing next year if Lovie Smith wins — that Lovie won with Dominik’s players.”

This was never a good argument to begin with. Something like 20 players on the active roster were new additions that Gruden and McKay brought in, mostly to overhaul the offense. Guys like Ken Dilger, Rickey Dudley, Joe Jurevicious, Keenan McCardell, Kerry Jenkins, Lomas Brown, Michael Pittman, Rob Johnson, Tom Tupa, Ryan Nece, Roman Oben, Greg Spires… all joined the team in 2002. Fact is, Dungy’s team couldn’t get out of the first round of the playoffs. Gruden’s did.

  32. PRBucFan Says:

He clearly won with Dungy’s defense lol

Grudens offense of course but definitely Dungy’s D lol.

It took Gruden to take us there and win no doubt, but that doesn’t change that by the smallest margin lol

  33. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Dungy has 1.5 Super Bowls…0.5 in Tampa where Gruden won with Dungy’s defense, and another whole 1.0 Super Bowl he won in Indy.

Gruden has 0.5 Super Bowl in Tampa and nothing else, because without Dungy’s defense he had no championship. Therefore they split the credit.

What is 1.5/0.5? That’s 3…as in Dungy has 3 times as many Super Bowls as Gruden. You do the math.

  34. PRBucFan Says:

    Ahahahaha! Well done FBIDallas

  35. buccanAy Says:

How could you forget the resigning of Clayton and the D. Ward signing, not to mention the guys we had and released, like gilberry and Selvie. still think the blount giveaway was just a case of being in over your head, where you could not control player as was talib.

  36. PRBucFan Says:

So im kinda mad that Bryan Cox is a falcon now lol

  37. RastaMon Says:

“But you know what? Mark Dominik wasn’t getting the answers he wanted”

But you know what?…..The GBoyz were not getting the results they had paid for…..

  38. SignedontoSay Says:

Remember, you crazy Father Dungy lovers, you know who you are, the ones that still insist with this nonsense that Chucky won with Father Dungy’s players, you better be saying the same thing next year if Lovie Smith wins — that Lovie won with Dominik’s players.

The people that claim that Gruden won with Dungy’s team are not making a literal statement. They are invoking feelings that are related to the history of the bucs beings so dismal for so many years. During Dungy’s tenure as head coach of the Bucs, the bucs became a team to be reckoned with. The team coached by Schiano is 4-12.

Dominik can be compared to Bruce Allen because they have similar roles, not coaches!

  39. AK Says:

That 2nd round pick traded for DJ Toes on the Line really paid off…

  40. buccanAy Says:

also remember the 201o draft where we took Myron Lewis and Brian Price instead of Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlop…of course the is hindsight, but the difference in talent is undeniable…again, I understand, but I really wanted Atkins in that draft with McCoy

  41. Dano Says:

Only way this team will improve is if they fix the O-line,get a DE,& a WR! O-line play was pathetic. It doesn’t matter who your QB is if that line isn’t fixed! Pass rush will improve by stopping those silly stunts but they really need a good DE to help McCoy. A WR with quickness to help 3rd down conversions which were pitiful. Hopefully Lovie will bring in some help to add good depth.

  42. RastaMon Says:

    & the other Detxer Jackson

  43. Eric Says:

Looks like it isnt only bucs fans who think highly of Dungy.

So too do the selectors of the pro football hall of fame.

  44. The_Buc_Realist Says:

the trade for DJ Toes on the Line with synthetic pot was a Second and a 2010 5th round,

Joe still maintains that was a reasonable trade. Winslow performed well for two seasons, and the visible evidence of Freeman’s development could be greatly attributed to a reliable veteran target like Winslow to throw to.–Joe

  45. mark2001 Says:

    Called it.

  46. stanglassman Says:

We all know that ‘ADHD’ means you are too stupid to play QB, right fellows? Com on TB Buc fan every time I think you can’t say something more ignorant than your lost post you top, amazing, you and PR are the worst.

  47. PRBucFan Says:

Ahh so sorry Free boi, didn’t mean to hurt your feelings ;)

  48. PRBucFan Says:

I could careless about his ADHD btw, he just regressed into a garbage QB and to top it off proved to be a conniving, deceitful, and lazy on his way out.

  49. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    IMHO:

Dom’s a nice guy and I liked his passion for the team. I now see why the media liked him so much and felt a need to cover him. He also was decent with capology, getting contracts done and CBA considerations with deals. There is a job for him somewhere in the org.

ITS NOT AND NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN GM. DOM PICKING NFL FOOTBALL PLAYERS IS LITTLE MORE THAN A BLIND LOTTERY. HE HAS VIRTUALLY NO CLUE AT ALL.

A reason why the org struggled to obtain talent under McKay and Allen- we had scouts like Mark Dominik – no football background as player, coach, scout, recruiter etc. You can’t hire a non-football background College grad, train him and make him a NFL talent evaluator.

I wish Dom the best in whatever capacity he pursues-stay away for picking NFL player and coaching talent.

  50. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ stranglassman

Didn’t mean to pick on poor Josh….he can’t help it!

  51. Architek Says:

Such a damning truth – Dom has known the Glazers for over two decades and he know his bosses. The funny thing about it was they finally opened the pocket book and that was the final straw.

The losing was not the last straw. It was the bad investments and Freeman debacle that sealed Dominik fate. Dominik was going to have to own Freeman pick and fallout from it because they had the approval to get a franchise qb and he blew it with a young unproven talent that had question coming out of college.

The worse part of it all is the extremely bad Benn, Lewis, Stocker, Price, Moore, Fulton, Stroughter, Bowden, Allen Bradford, Daniel Hardy and more were flat out bad picks that had to be owned. Enough said and Dominik overall body of work probably doomed him.

Now there is another portion of this that I look at is the autonomy that the Glazers gave Dominik. Anytime you have the freedom to build out a team with hands off ownership – you will succeed and receive all credit but if you fail you will fall on the sword and he did!

Dungy not winning a ring Tampa and going to Colts and doing it actually increased his legacy because he did it with a offense led team which nullified all the doubters that said he couldn’t, HOF for real. Gruden did the same but I’m not sure his legacy is as storied as Dungy’s.

Lovie foundation is set and we have to give Schiano some credit but it’s not hard to get better when you a bottom feeder for so long. Just ask 49ers!

  52. scotty Says:

well you dumb asses then dungy won with Sam Wyches team!!! every team has players left over!! Dungy had payton and still only won one? great job!

  53. stanglassman Says:

It has nothing to do with Josh it has to do with you not knowing what you are talking about, Einstein. Oh sorry he was known to have had ADHD.

  54. nate_tweetz Says:

Everybody better be saying Lovie won with Dominick’s team Joe? lol. Even if Lovie does win, I can guarantee this roster will look differently next season. And if Lovie does win with “Dominick’s” team it shows that Dominick sucked at this other responsibility to hire a competent coach to produce a winning team. Either way, the point your trying to make falls on it’s face.

  55. PRBucFan Says:

    Big words scotty *shutters

Free Free sucks and it had nothing to do with his ADHD, get over it.

  56. Justin Says:

Dominik was done when 1st round pick Josh Freeman was released. Failures at QB in the 1st round of an NFL draft usually spell doom for a GM. Still sad to see him go because I genuinely feel he is actually good at his job, unlike some other people in the NFL.

  57. scotty Says:

I didn’t say anything about free! I said dungy won with sam wyche’s team, most of the defense was in place when dungy got here!

  58. BigMacAttack Says:

I just hope our next GM is beyond the Zit phase of his life, or least post pubescent.

  59. BigMacAttack Says:

BTW the Glazers won with Culverhouse’s team. What a stupid argument that continues to this day by complete morons.

  60. PRBucFan Says:

    I realize that lol

The second sentence was for the guy I’ve been discussing free with ;)

  61. Mike10 Says:

Joe I usually agree w u… but not on Marky Mark… I’ve been calling his misfires for the past 3+ years ever since his bromance with Ruud. Dom is as much a reason for this franchise moving backwards as anyone. 2 unsuccessful coaching hires, missing on a franchise QB (free), and other countless free agency and drafting blunders. For every Lavonte David you have a Michael Bennett, L Blount, and Talib. What we get back for those 3? A 4th and 7th rders? Look at Bennett now… and Talib all pro. Why do u think we have to pay these free agents all this $? Failed draft picks.

  62. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Mike10:

You must remember: the awful draft picks, cuts and trades are blamed on the Head Coach, while the good picks and trades get credited to Dom somehow?? LOL

I guess since Dom’s a good guy and treated media well, he gets handled gently – even called a rock star with an awful record.

  63. SeanyMac in SC Says:

As a person I always like Dom and what he did for the community. Staying at one job for too long and you get stale. Professionally it was time he moved on anyway. Dom will land on his feet and will do quite well somewhere else in the NFL I’m sure.

  64. LUVMYBUCS Says:

It took Bruce Allen years, to get the organization out of cap purgatory. Life over from the Dungy & Mckay administration.

1.) So when coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen were fired in 09′
*Dom was handed over $44 million in cap space.

  65. BigMacAttack Says:

Seriously???? That’s the longest post ever. Why not just write a book. No one wants to read 3 pages of babbling bs that everyone knows already.

  66. PRBucFan Says:

    Nice lol

  67. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @BigMacAttack

It seems like everyone has forgot..lol

Mind you I didn’t even bring Quincy Black signing

or the terrible evaulation of DT Chris Jones or DE George Selvie :-(

  68. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @PRBucFan

    Lol, whats up brotha

  69. PRBucFan Says:

yoyoyo dealing with the bitter baby chef paul lol on the first thread

  70. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Lol, Let me go check it out.

  71. MTM Says:

There is a big difference between Dungy’s team and Schiano’s team. Lets stop trying to compare the two. I don’t see 3 future HOF’S and 1 HOF on the current roster.

  72. Capt. Tim Says:

Saying Lovie wins with Dom’s players, would be like like saying Tom Brady wins, cause he’s using my Football!
I may buy a Football, but I can’t win an NFL game with it.
But Brady could work miracles with the same Ball.

God Bless Tony Dungy/ but he couldn’t win a playoff game, even though he had the best team. He strangled our offense every time.

Gruden knew how to use those Same players, and replace the poor ones- to win games!
But Gruden proved that he couldn’t build a team. He couldn’t coach up the young guys- to replace the ones that were aging.

But I have great respect for both those guys.
And I don’t hate Raheem or Schiano, though I was glad to see both go.

Think Lovie will build a great team. Question will be- can Tedford build a great offense. I know Lovie and Leslie will build a great Defense.

  73. Red86 Says:

Gruden winning with Dungy’s players is actually a compliment to Dungy. In this situation it’s an insult to Greg and Dom. None of them wanted to listen to the flaws of their plans.

  74. Que589 Says:

So if Lovie wins w/ the players that Dominik & Schiano couldn’t win more than 4 games with, then what is that to say about their performance as GM & HC?

  75. Que589 Says:

    Dominik’s downfall:

-Didn’t place a high value on speed. Never made a real investment in team speed
    -Hired a bad Head Coach

  76. Mike10 Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS,

Excellent man! Thanks for posting that, have been curious to his choices.

Dom set this franchise back almost a decade – (once the dust settles and we get back into the playoffs)

I HOPE THE NEW GM, WILL PUT AN END TO THE STINKING-SMELL OF THE UGLY PEWTER PANTS! NO MORE PEWTER PANTS! BLACK OR WHITE PANTS PLEASE!

  79. Rob Says:

The former regime made too many bad picks, and let to much talent go, while getting little in return. Watching Blount, Talib and Bennett dominate in playoff games makes that obvious.

I hope to hell the new HC (can’t bring myself to saying Lovie) turns this roster over. First thing should be to re-vamp the OL. Either through the draft or FA. Would like to see us get Jared Allen & bring Bennett back. Raid the Bears for a few players. The draft alone is not going to get it done. Hate to ruin it for some Bucs fans, but I think 8-8 would be doing good the first year. Of course like everyone else just my opinion.
