Father Dungy And The Bucs

Now in this CBS Sports video, popular sports radio and television personality Adam Schein, Jason La Canfora and Amy Trask discuss the Lovie Smith hiring and how Team Glazer had reached out to Bill Cowher in November to take over the team.
This tells Joe that Team Glazer had hit a boiling point from the 0-8 start by the Bucs along with the mess started by leaky Rip Van Freeman, and long ago decided former Bucs commander Greg Schiano’s fate.
But also in the conversation, La Canfora brings up the possibility Team Glazer is trying to recreate the image of the Bucs by going to the wayback machine nearly two decades ago, when Team Glazer hired Tony Dungy.
La Canfora floated the possibility that Father Dungy may accept a position with the Bucs (watch the video for evidence).
Now Father Dungy has several times said he is done with football, as recently as a week or two ago. But that doesn’t mean he may not accept a position as a consultant. Joe has always felt Father Dungy would be a tremendous front office man. Just look at his coaching tree. The man had an uncanny knack for picking really good (defensive) assistants.
A problem for Team Glazer would be they also would have to find a consultant to seek input on the offensive side of the ball.

I’m not convinced that they reached any conclusions at 0-8 but there is no doubt they started preparing just in case at an early stage. Which shows they did learn from there last mistake of waiting til the last second to hire Schiano.

let’s take the nostalgia train ride one step further…often lost in selective memory history is the fact that the solid foundation of young Bucs talent that later became our SB team was drafted by fan non-favorite but good talent evaluator Sam Wyche (who inherited a Bucs team that was a bit of a mess). Dungy took the foundation Wyche left him and turned it around yet couldn’t get the job done (in Dungy’s case going up to Philly and winning in the postseason). Enter Jon Gruden who came in got the job done. SO in this story Wyche = Schiano, Dungy = Smith, and (Jon) Gruden = ? (perhaps Jay Gruden). Now that would be nostalgia!

IMO-Dungy did Extraordinary Job molding the teams Culture. But lets not forget most of the intrical parts of a defense were already here. Due in Most Part to Sam Wyche & Rich Mckay.

we tried over-reacting…
Raheem was because of tomlin in pitt. when morris interviewed with Denver, the bucs freaked and hired him a headcoach after just promoting to dc. (interestingly, Raheem might interview for the Washington and Cleveland headcoach openings…rooney rule?)
schiano was an overreaction to chip the dip accepting, then lying about the job and Raheem’s loose team. schiano had to come in and instill discipline.
i’m all for new hires. jay gruden, Darren bevel oc seattle/minnesota. whisenhunt as a rehire, but he is going to the lios if he wants it…it is his to lose, reportedly.

I know its only speculation, but the signing of the two coaches could give us a hand on acquiring his services.

Both guys are good coaches with solid NFL resumes and both are considered excellent defensive minds as well as ‘player’s coaches’. What I also see are two coaches that will field competitive teams but probably never deliver the fans to the ‘promised land’ of Super Bowl victory. I know a lot of Bucs fans are saying they’d love to get a whiff of the playoffs even if it’s a one and done deal, but human nature is we’d never be satisfied with that long term. Need proof, look no further than why Dungy and Gruden are no longer coaching in Tampa. I’m sure a lot of the Bengals fans will agree if you ask them. You don’t always hit on an unknown coach, but sometimes the reward when you do is worth it when you find the guy who will be coaching your franchise until he chooses to leave (ahem…Belichick)

He took time off to get better to identify and work on his weaknesses.
He’s got a plan and i’m excited to see what he does.
He stated in a interview that Chaicago was a learning experience and he is now a greater coach than he was than.
I’m willing to trust that and see where he takes us.
People wanted change we got change, and to truth is people will never be satisfied.

Remember how Dungy and McKay built the team, if one man went down or left via FA, they had a starter in waiting. I think Lovie will do the same, those players drafted by Schiano/Dominck, if they can play they will stay, because Lovie will build depth at every position. I’m hoping for playoffs but relying more on patience. The problem with Rah and Schiano, you rarely if ever saw improvement/hope from week to week, you knew what was going to happen, ie, can’t score in first half (Rah), can’t score second half (Schiano)

I agree, I’d like to keep Demps…but we have 5 RBs & 4 FBs….depends on special teams…
Frankly, I’d rather go with 2 TEs (if we get a good one) than a FB….If we have a FB, I want one that can run & catch….like Tolbert.
I know I’ll get a lot of flack for this but it is possible that Martin could be trade bait for moving up in the draft.
If not, we will probably trade Rainey or James….(unsure of Rainey’s FA status)

One of the elements with a new HC & GM is they are not bound by their predicesors bias’/opinions on players.
For example….Dominick would be reluctant to get rid of Means, Tandy, Carimi….players that he acquired (that includes Revis)
Schiano would be unwaivering on Glennon.
These new guys can make all sorts of moves….it will be very interesting.

We’d probably be lucky to even get a 7th rounder and a bag of chips for Rainey. That’s not a knock on what he accomplished for the Bucs (waiver wire pickup and thrust into a productive starting role shortly afterwards), but the position is already getting so devalued in today’s NFL that I doubt teams would give up much in return for either Rainey or James.
As for moving around in this upcoming draft my own personal opinion is stay put and draft best available for team need. To the best of my knowledge we don’t have a GM (yet) and Lovie’s drafts while at Chicago weren’t Raheem poor but weren’t as good as Schiano’s either (my personal opinion of course). Lovie had some good picks but whiffed on a few as well (we have one of his first round whiffs on the team in Carimi). Better to see how our new HC/GM combo does at evaluating talent and drafting before getting too cute moving around adding/trading away picks…at least for this draft.

?!? Dungy would be brought in for personnel, not for defensive analysis strictly. Jeff Tedford, a major college coach at a traditionally intelligent school with a 600 page playbook who has the ironclad endorsement of the best analyst outside coaching (Dilfer) would seem to have the offensive side on lockdown.

I hope they don’t even think about trading Martin! The guy is young, very productive, and a complete player (and his injury/surgery shouldn’t hamper him as at all in his position). Besides do you think the Bucs would get a 1st round pick higher than what they used on him a couple years ago? All signs are pointing to fewer RB’s being drafted in the first round, so I personally don’t see the benefit of trading away one of the Bucs few young offensive stars for perhaps a 2nd round pick in this upcoming draft…but that’s just my take.

Like I said before, so was Asante Samuel deal when he was with Philly. Yet once u can find a trade partner, similar to the way Philly engaged in talking with Atlanta at the time. You can restructure the deal to consummate the trade. Except Revis in coming off a Pro Bowl. So we good.

I realize the Schiano hate is abundant here, but he did a pretty good job of getting the talent on the roster. I’m not sure we really need to trade away any of our star players for additional draft picks. Talent wise the team isn’t that far away (injuries hurt bad this past season especially since quality depth is a big issue for the team). I personally think Lovie and staff (a GM too if the Glazers decide to hire one sometime before the draft) need to focus on bolstering the ends on both lines and adding either another hybrid TE or WR as well as quality depth at as many positions as they can this offseason. I absolutely agreed with Schiano when he said they were only a couple pieces away (assuming the rest of the team had stayed healthy)…DE being one of them.

I’m talking about using Martin to trade up for a QB….I wouldn’t trade him for a defensive player or draft a defensive player with the trade.
All I’m saying is that its possible & Lovie won’t be as committed to any player as Schiano/Dominick would be.
I’m also not proposing that we do that. I like staying where we are in the draft and picking there or trading down.

Yea I understand what your saying but under no circumstances can you trade away any of the good offensive pieces we have. Which is pretty much Doug and V-jax. Those 2 should be untouchable because without them this offense is scary and depressingly bad.
Even if you want to trade up for a QB, why would you do that by giving away the only good player he has? Your putting him in an even worse position than Glennon was last year.
You could be right. I just hope not because that is a very bad start for next year.

look at the way he plays no where close to to a qb in the NFL he’s mind set is always i couldrun you can tell look how hes read option from last year got figured out and look how he has struggled tru the year only reason hes even playing in the playoffs is because hes defense is one of the best yea not saying he can’t develop because the nfl is about developing you’re young players but just doesn’t seem like he’s interested in changing his game Aaron Rodgers had 1 bad year his first year he started and from there on he has shown he’s a top 3 qb even with the worse offensive lines in last couple of years and the horrible defenses and a lack of the runnin game he still has took en his team to the playoffs year in and year out

Not to change the subject, but I really was hoping for Jay Gruden to get the nod, but there is NO question that Lovie will make a huge difference over Schiano, does anyone remember back in April ’13, 49’ers OT Anthony Davis went off on his former coach in Schiano?

I mean, I knew Schiano wasn’t the warm and fuzzy type, but I didn’t know he was THIS bad, according to Davis, he gave him NO preparation to the NFL ranks and basically came off like he genuinely hated the man, I’ve never heard a player go off on his college coach like this before, which makes me think the Glazers saved a lot of heartache by firing Schiano now, ’cause I’m sure the word was out that he’s NOT the coach you want to leave it on the field for, Lovie on the other hand brings instant respectability to the mix, he’s the epitome of what a “players coach” is, and you HAVE to have the players respect to get everything out of them (ala Dungy), they simply will not want to let him down, it appears with GS, there was the potential for a lot of resentment….I think we have a lot to get excited about here. because it will be completely different than what we just had.

I’m not intending to be rude or attack you, but of those guys you named, only Steve Young was good enough to win a Superbowl in todays NFL.
Tony Dungy was interviewed on one of the local stations Friday. The host asked him point blank, “Tony, do you believe a team with an average offense and a great defense, like the Bucs of your days in Tampa, can win in the nfl these days?”
Tony’s answer was, “You can win and occasionally get into the playoffs, but if you want to win superbowls you must be able to put points on the board.”
Tony was saying that the phrase “Offense sells tickets, defense wins superbowls” no longer applies.
This is especially true of the NFC South, a division that is quickly developing into a high scoring division.
It’s not that defense isn’t needed. It’s that the NFL is now doing its best to make rules that hamper defenses and cause offenses to flourish. Offenses can now force penalties on defenses, therebye rigging the games. All a wr has to do iff he sees a tackler coming is lower his head toward the tacklers helmet. The refs will call it on the defense every time.
The Panthers have a good defense. They have a better offense. The Saints have a very good offense, a not so great defense. The Falcons may have had a bad year, but they are built on offense.
Yes, defense can be the difference in ‘some’ games, but we have to beat the teams in our division to make it into the playoffs. To do that, we need a better than average QB and better than average offense.
Denying that is remaining stuck in the past, because the NFL is going to keep changing the rules to benefit the offense.
The next thing will be the removal of kickoffs. Teams will soon start at the 20 every time, and good defense on special teams will be contained to just punt return defense.
And then the NFL will try to extend the careers of RBs by changing the rules for tackling them as well.

but we actually need a more mobile quarterback. glennon did ok but I would want a backup plan. we are not getting it all done in year 1. there will be good defenders, receivers in next year’s draft.
I am curious about the offense though. I wonder what will be asked of the qb.

The problem with Johnny Boy’s size is definitely his running game. The kid has an arm, but if he runs half as much in the NFL as he does in college, he won’t make it to Week 8 healthy. Not against an NFL front 7. Of course running isn’t out of the question, but he’ll have to change his game if he doesn’t want to end up like Michael Vick or RGlll, and he’s smaller than those guys.

You could tell last off-season Schiano had no plan of direction and simply had no clue how to actually coach, one he cleaned out the locker room he was lost, say what you want but if he had treated Freeman like an adult or any of his players he’d still have a job, Schiano sabotaged his own career with bad coaching. Classic example, the jets and saints games both games won with Freeman sitting in the bench waiting for the D to close out the game cuz that’s Schiano specialty right….wrong. I don’t want us to go buy up free agents, i want lovie to make Schiano and his coaching staff look even more stupid and pathetic by taking these same players people are saying are no good and beating the hell out of teams next year

Glennon isn’t our guy but still even if we traded up for the number 1 pick in the draft for a quarterback in not ready to see another rookie learn on the job, Freeman and Glennon that was enough, I’d rather see us draft someone and let him sit at least half a year if not a year even if he is the guy unless he comes into training camp and dominate, don’t want a Sanchez/geno smith situation here where they both look awful, hope aaor Rodgers helps his brother learn this offense maybe he can be a diamond in the rough

ok for starters, what we relly need to know is what is lovie smith’s real first name because it sure as hell ain’t lovie…secondly, imho lovie smith is a good coach…maybe above average, but i feel we should have searched for a top notch hiring…but there wasn’t a top guy available i guess…on a scale of 1 to 10 lovie is like a 7.5 as coach…schiano was like a 3…rah was like a 4.5…dungy was like an 8…chuckie was like a 9 to 9.2….these comparisons all are in relation to belichick, parcells, etc…so lovie is above average – but whisenhunt is also like a 7.5…so i guess we got a guy who is familiar with the tampa surroundings and way, and who has more experience under his belt now…let’s see if lovie can up his game from a 7.5 to a 9….once again what is his real freakin’ name…mama didn’t name him lovie???
