They’re All Gone

Butch Davis is among the casualties as the Bucs have now dismissed all of Greg Schiano’s football staff.

In the wake of the firing of former Bucs commander Greg Schiano, his assistants, some 84 in all (sarcasm, people), were still listed as staff members on Buccaneers.com. This freaked out hyper, Mountain Dew-chugging fans who honestly thought Lovie was going to continue the prancing Sheridan Stunts.

It seems Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times has calming words on Twitter for those Bucs fans, who, prone on their backs at night, had chewed through their fingernails thinking only Schiano was jettisoned.

@gregauman: Sounds like all of Greg Schiano’s assistant coaches have been formally notified by Bucs they won’t be retained. Not aware of any kept on. … Assistant coaches who came in with Greg Schiano had two-year contracts with a third-year club option from Bucs. Team not taking options. … Former Miami and UNC coach Butch Davis was also not retained by Bucs as special assistant to the head coach. Worked under Schiano 2012-13.

Joe is chagrin for some, namely Earnest Byner and Bryan Cox. Those guys did good work and it’s hard to argue they couldn’t be valuable members of Lovie’s staff (who knows, maybe they will be?).

Now, for the vile haters out there, Joe has bad news. The staff of former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik is in tact.

This is smart. First, the Bucs don’t yet have a general manager. Second, East-West Shrine Game practices in St. Petersburg are 10 days away. The Senior Bowl practices in Mobile are the following week. Those are critical scouting events. To not have a staff in place at those events is begging for draft-day disasters.

Joe doesn’t expect significant changes on the football operations front until after the Senior Bowl, maybe not until after the combine and perhaps not until the draft is finished in May.

    Big loss there:(

I expect Lovie will bring in all of his assistants….It appears he has put some time and a lot of thought into who he wants. I would be surprised if any Schiano assistants were retained…not that they aren’t worthy…just that the new broom sweeps clean.
Not the same with the GM’s staff…it is likely many will be retained…such is the nature of the difference between functions…..Coaches have close relationships with players…

Butch Davis has got to be the most over rated football mind in america…good riddance fake…never have I seen a coach get more mileage from being a d coordinator….

  4. mike Says:

I would keep ernest byner for sure! The rest…. no thanks

  5. Bucfan#37 Says:

Clean house for the Bucs, I thought a few of the previous staff would be retained. Back to square one.

  6. Dre-Day Says:

listen, bryan cox did a phenomenal job with lavonte’ david, mason foster, and dekoda watson. he truly is an underrated assistant coach. as well as coach byner. he is by far, the very best rb coach on planet earth. look at his resume’ with chris johnson leading the league in rushing under byner, maurice jones-drew leading the league in rushing under byner, and the job he did with muscle hamster last year. add to it, bringing out the best in mike james and bobby rainey this year…. please re-sign these coaches before another smarter team does so. it will be our loss if they walk away.

  7. Chris Says:

I think quarrles and stokes will be retained. They weren’t original Dom guys. Stokes had done an excellent Job as a scout for Seattle and improving our inept drafts in the past with guys like Barron , David, Martin, banks and potential starter in Gholston. Depth guys like Tandy and Spence and wright as a Udfa.

  8. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I wonder when they are going to update their website. Everyone except for Shiano and Dominick are still listed.

  9. Celly Says:

Please, Lovie, please, for all things that are right in this world, please keep Cox and Byner. Those 2 ALONE deserve to be back next year. If nothing else, those 2 units have performed admirably.

  10. Ruggyup Says:

From here, a huge sigh of relief to have departure of Butch Davis confirmed. Go Bucs!

  11. Eric Says:

I hope the new GmM gets rid of Rock’s staff immediately.

  12. Chef Paul Says:

That’s a real bummer for some of these guys. Especially (like everyone agrees) Byner and Cox. One thing I was worried about with firing Schinao, and bringing in an offensive HC, is if Lavonte, and GMC regressed in their play. Thankfully with Lovie, we shouldn’t have to worry about that.

  13. Chef Paul Says:

And Wandstatt too. It would’ve been nice to keep him. He was fantastic at special teams.

  14. Joe Says:

Guessing these days, with all that is going on, there are bigger fish to fry.

  15. madmacskillz Says:

Tampabaybucfan is spot on with the broom. Lovie will want his players hearing his message from his coaches. And Joe is spot on with the GM’s staff. If I’m Lovie, I don’t want to have to deal with scouting and all that stuff because I’m going to have my hands full putting together my coaching staff. As for Brian Cox leaving, I think that’s a great idea.

  16. blackmagic00 Says:

Byner and Cox need to be retained for sure. Maybe bostad. Definitely Byner and Cox though.

  17. MTM Says:

Davis has probably finally failed his way out of football. Talk about over rated. Byner is probably the only viable coach that Smith may bring back. Cox would not gel with Smith.

  18. DontBucNH8 Says:

Joe- They might have fired the website person too lol

  19. Drew Says:

Retaining an assistant coach will be the collective decisions of the HC, OC and DC.

  20. Drew Says:

    Please keep Byner and Cox!!!

  21. Ian P. Says:

I was hoping they would keep at least Byner, and maybe Bostad and Wannstedt.
I think Byner’s body of work speaks for itself. They would be hard pressed to find anybody better right now.

I’m not sure what Cox did that was so special. His title was “pass rush specialist” and during his tenure we’ve had one of the weakest pass rushes in the league.

  22. Tim Says:

Byner, Bostad, and Cox all deserve 2nd looks.

  23. Larry Says:

Lavonte made the All-Pro team. Just goes to show that the Pro Bowl is about popularity as much as performance.

GMC also made it, but Revis did not.

I have to agree with the All-Pro team more than the Pro Bowl.

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*Pro Bowl is all about the The Fans, The players, and The Coaches.

*ALL PRO is about is about the Media. When I last checked their the ones that vote you into the HALL OF FAME.

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

“The Pro Bowl is for the best players in the NFL. The annual All-Pro team is for the best of the best.”

Yep that pretty much sums it up.

  26. Camby Says:

I figured the all knowing Domenik didnt even have a staff, just a room of mirrors so he could gaze upon the greatest person that ever roamed the earth, and maybe a cup for him to smell his own flatulence with.

  27. daver Says:

the only one I would have retained would have been brayon Cox

  28. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree with ^^^ Byner, Cox, Bostad all good coaches. I like that Stokes and Quarles staying. Hickey , I have mixed feelings about.

    Waiting for word on Marinelli.

  29. BigMacAttack Says:

    @Camby, lmao!

  30. Eric Says:

    Get rid of the scouts.

  31. Bjax02 Says:

Any truth to the talk about Lane Kiffin joining the Buc’s staff as wide receiver’s coach?

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think the Buc Realist should be hired as GM…..at least that will keep him from posting negatively about himself.

“Butch Davis has got to be the most over rated football mind in america…”

Careful. It might just be Butch Davis that convinced Dominick and Schiano to go after David, Baron, Martin and Greg Spence.

He was always a good talent evaluator in the draft.

  34. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I don’t think all of them should have been let go, but I won’t assume Lovie cannot replace them with decent guys.

At least not on defense. Offense is a completely different matter.

  35. pick6 Says:

the front office has actually done a good job over the last 3 or 4 seasons. they’ve improved in draft evaluation for sure and we have had the best cap situation in football (or close to it) despite signing several pro bowlers in FA. Dom had to take the fall for 2 coaching hires that went horribly wrong, but the front office in general has been a big part of replenishing our core of good players while keeping us in position to add more guys or let players go with no penalty

  36. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Poof and the coaches link on the buccaneer website is gone. Front office (with Butch Davis) still on the website.

  37. Mumbles Says:

I think there are 3 Glazer brothers. One held the door, one pulled the pin, and one took a bowlers stance and rolled a RPG (Rutgers Personnel Grenade) right down the middle of OBP and then there were none! lol.

  38. Tomcin Says:

How about Marinelli DC, Sapp DL, Nickerson or Brooks LB & Herm Edwards or Lynch DB. Also Alstott RB.

  39. TJ Ware Says:

Tomcin is another idiot…just a pure idiot

Let’s hope not. Guy is a poison without much visible talent.

  41. Clowney Says:

I heard there was a tsunami of former Buc assistants spotting moving north on the Jersey Turnpike.

  42. MARK Says:

They still need to get rid of Hickey.

  43. Covertwo22 Says:

Byner, Cox, and Weinstadt would be great holdovers. The special teams has had the most splash plays in the league ( minus returns ) in the past two years. Weinstadt plus a respectable return guy could equal the top special teams in the league.
It appears everyone agrees that Byner and Cox are outstanding.
Just heard that Frasier is the new DC!

  44. SadBucsFan Says:

In addition to Byner and Cox, Lovie should keep Fraser who was assistant DC for front 7 and they did a great job this year.

  45. Dre-Day Says:

listen, i’ve seen about 10 variations of this man’s name. if you are going to talk about him, at least have his name right. coach DAVE W-A-N-N-S-T-E-D-T

  46. Left_Coast_Bucs_Fan Says:

Hopefully Byner and Cox are brought back by Lovie, they did great work. If not, thanks to both, I’m sure both of them will land on their feet somewhere else offering them good opportunities, they deserve it!

  47. NY Buc Says:

I’m sold on Byner’s track record too…dude seems to get the most out of RB’s no matter where he’s coached. I doubt the new boss will want any of the old boss’s coaches or assistants though, so it’s probably nothing more than a pipe dream that Byner stays with the Bucs.
