Tap The Brakes On Rod Marinelli?

Cowboys could block Rod Marinelli from coming to Bucs.
Bucs fans erupted in glee last night when it was learned, via BSPN’s Adam Schefter, that the Bucs had hired defensive guru Rod Marinelli as the team’s new defensive coordinator.
The first thing that went through Joe’s head was, “Isn’t Marinelli under contract with the Cowboys?” But hey, if Schefter Twitttered it, it had to be true. Right?
Well…
It seems Schefter’s report, at best, may have been premature. His colleague at BSPN, Todd Archer who covers the Cowboys for BSPN Dallas, cites several Cowboys team sources claiming the Bucs do not have the rights to Marinelli, that he is still under contract with the Cowboys, and his ascension to defensive coordinator with the Bucs is far from a done deal.
Marinelli is under contract to the Cowboys in 2014. The Cowboys could let him go if they choose, but they have blocked Joe DeCamillis and Tony Sparano in recent years from taking jobs with different teams while under contract. It is possible they could come up with some sort of compensation package to let Marinelli go.
Teams are only required to allow assistant coaches to interview for head coaching vacancies.
But the feeling is the Cowboys do not want to lose Marinelli. He was forced to work with 19 different defensive linemen in 2013 because of injuries and poor play. The Cowboys higher ups liked what he brought to that group and defense in particular.
Archer went on to write it is very possible the Cowboys could jettison defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and promote Marinelli to fill the void.
Now, if it really is a done deal that Marinelli is coming to the Bucs, Joe is going to guess Team Glazer worked out a backroom deal with Jerry Jones for a modest seven-figure sum to persuade Jones to rip up Marinelli’s contract.
This should be a fun next few days.

I’m sure we’ll know during the day tomorrow what the deal is.
Pretty weird no Cowboys came out and denied the claim of him being the new DC.
I guess what I read about the Boys not being able to decline it because it’s not a lateral move was wrong.
Lovie will be able to work his magic, i’m not even worried.

Even more weird is I read that article and I don’t remember him mentioning anything about Cowboys sources.
Just that he was under contract still.

The Glazers’ scattershot approach makes me nervous. They had 22 coaches under Schiano, including Wannstadt, and they had Butch Davis in some undefined role. So they hire Lovie and he wants to bring in an OC with zero NFL experience. And no GM, no president, and no CEO. WTF? What exactly is their plan as an organization? Do they intend to let Lovie be the GM too? That certainly would be one way to pay for the Schiano contract. Mark my words, if the Glazers do not recognize they have no clue what they’re doing and fail to bring in a top executive type to run this organization then we are doomed to repeat the same failures. Tap the breaks on that for a second.

Would love to see Rod Marinelli as DC here – if we get him – it will definitely be because the Glazers bought him from Jerry Jones.
Please, PLEASE not Leslie Frazier – I can’t stand that sell out/sabotage artist. He definitely knows how to get after a QB – and he’s BEST at dropping his own QB…not a fan of any COACH/LEADER who decides to sabotage his own player – just because the owner does something he doesn’t necessarily like.
YES! On Marinelli – pass on Frazier.

Norv Turner as OC gets me WAAAAYYY more excited than Jeff Tedford – yes the dude put Aaron Rogers into the NFL – but well before then – he was known for the QB system he built. That QB system he developed made the likes of Akili Smith, David Carr, Kyle Boller and Trent Dilfer look like sure-fire, number one draft picks…except, only Aaron Rogers was.
He whiffed 6 straight times BEFORE finding Aaron Rogers….not anyone of note since.
This past season California went 1-11 and the one win against a 6-6 Portland State team that they BEAR-LY beat (did ya’ see what I did there).

That’s actually not going to work for a Dungy-esque team.
The defense depends on grind it out football – the offense doesn’t play to win, it manages the clock and simply doesn’t lose.
That’s not Norv’s game.
Think back and remember – Dungy didn’t like throwing the ball – he liked managing the clock and not committing mistakes. He likes the kind of QB that can’t win a game – but doesn’t throw the ball away.
Yeah, looks like the next generation gets to learn all the lessons of Dungy-ball…all on their own emotion!

^^that was then. Whole different ball game these days pal. Need an offense that can put up points. Saints can score on any defense regardless how good (ask San Francisco and anyone that comes to the dome).

@White Tiger – I think what you wrote is exactly what would make Tedford a good fit here. If his system can make QBs who are below standards, as evidenced by their performance after leaving him, look like all-stars then that could be exactly what we need to get Glennon to take a few leaps forward. If your system requires a great QB to run it then there aren’t going to be many situations you’re going to find yourself in where you’ll be successful but Tedford can make average QBs look exceptional

Ref Jeff Tedofrd as OC, if you go to Tedford’s wikipedia site it says he is already the Offensive Coordinator. Sounds like a done deal to me….

Read up on Ted and it seems like could be a great pick up.
Ultimately Lovie has been sitting on this choice for a year now so I trust the choice he makes. It’s been a problem for him on his latest teams so I’m sure he’s done his due diligence.

If he doesn’t get Marinelli, we are back in it. Maybe the Glazers have something up their sleeve with Jerry. Or maybe they are just stupid and incompetent to think they can get Jerry to be a nice guy. Very disappointed if he doesn’t come…and one year from now the fans will be in exactly the same place.

The Cowboys won’t want to keep Marinelli if he wants to leave.
I think they will work something out. I’m not worried about the Glazers hiring a HC before the GM….the GM they hire will be fine with Lovie.
And Tedford has developed many college QBs and other offensive players that were drafted very high. Smith had plenty of time and choices for OC….I am certain Tedford was very well thought out…

PRBucFan – I sure hope you are right, but what makes you think they have a plan? They’ve never had one before, botching the Gruden firing, the Brooks release, and two consecutive coaching hires. This smells of panic, and appears really disjointed to me, like they have no clue what they are doing in terms of big picture, long range, strategic planning.
For example, since when does an organization hire a coach with no front office structure in place. Frankly, that is an absurd move. What? We are going to allow a coach to pick a GM? That worked well with Gruden and Bruce Allen, right? Or are we going to let Lovie serve as the GM? If so, that would be a convenient way for the Glazers to offset Schiano’s remaining contract.
And why all of a sudden is there talk about dropping Revis and his contract? If that happens it is a salary dump, pure and simple, regardless of the spin others put on it.
Look, I am not trying to throw cold water on this thing. And frankly, I love the enthusiasm most are showing. We love the Bucs and want them to do well, but I have watched how differently the Boyz manage the Bucs versus Man U and I am troubled.
Joe’s “Tap the Brakes” line seems appropriate for this whole damn thing. As badly as we have been screwed the last five years, we should demand a well thought process before letting the Boyz believe they’ve pacified us so they can get back to Man U.

PR…you are crazy if you think the Bears D was anything without the great pass rush they had in their early years plus Urlacher at LB. At the end the D was a shell of itself…not very good this year, the year after Lovie left. Time will tell, but saw many games up here, and saw him get torched by the Packers many times. He isn’t the guy you folks think.

Mark 2001 we went from Greg Schiano to Lovie Smith. Yes, you’re supposed to be excited. Who would you have hired? We went from a clown from college to a respected NFL coach that players want to play for and talented coaches want to coach under. We have plenty of talent on defense to be great.

the fans here didn’t pay any attention to lovie in chicago. they don’t know of his late season collapses, poor timeout management, getting burned by aaron rodgers despite his “great d”. we are starving for wins here. hopefully he learned from his time in chicago and will be better for it, and us bucs fans.
