Strong Penn State Push Now For Schiano

December 29th, 2013

schiano and glazerGreg Schiano has many Bucs fans running to Home Depot for pitchforks and other dangerous lawn tools for an angry march on One Buc Palace, but the honchos at Penn State have no interest in those shenanigans.

NFL Network reported this morning that Penn State is planning a full-court press on Schiano, with university officials targeting Schiano now that it’s known Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien is nearly a lock to return to the NFL.

Reporter Ian Rapoport claimed Penn State is “ready to make a strong push” for Schiano and that Penn State athletic director Dave Joyner is “mulling flying down to Tampa” in order to try and convince Schiano “in person” to come to Penn State.

Yes, last week Schiano denied that he reached out to Penn State, but a job recruitment/hunt is always a fluid situation and things might have changed.

Schiano was an assistant under Joe Paterno for years at Penn State and the farm-country school is about a 3 1/2-hour drive from Schiano’s old stomping grounds and family in New Jersey.

Obviously, Penn State is a plumb job, and one would think they’d be able to come close to the $3 million per year Schiano earns with the Bucs.

Good luck coach and Penn State. I hope they land there man.

  4. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Damn that Jay Glazer is reporting that too.

  5. Hawaiian Buc Says:

This is too good to be true.

  6. The_Buc_Realist Says:

unfortunately, no one wants the Pop-star.

  7. dee Says:

    yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

  8. Santa Says:

Glazers don’t want to admit there wrong to fire him

  9. knucknbuc Says:

Mort Adam schefter and jay glazer reporting schiano is safe….sigh sucks for us. I’m done if true for next year. I’m notgoing to waste my time money and energy if he comes back I don’t believe in the coaches and schemes I’ll pass.

  10. Santa Says:

@ knucknbuc I’m sure you’re not gonna be the only one

  11. Rob in Tampa Says:

Jay Glazer just reported that Greg is probably staying here. That’s so frustrating!!! Bring in either Lovie or Mike Shanahan. If they replace Dom which I hope they don’t then bring in either Bill Polian or Scott Pioli. Heres a name that nobody has brought up what about old Charlie Weis he’s an Offensive guy.

  12. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Safe but Glazer is saying that the Glazers hope Shiano takes the Penn St Job.

  13. Santa Says:

Sounds like Napoleon is staying so get used to it

  14. DallasBuc Says:

If schiano chooses to leave for penn st no one can stop him and there are know rules preventing college teams from talking to him. An embarrassing loss today could certainly change the look of this…

  15. jb Says:

We can only hope this rumor is true!

  16. JerseyBucsFan Says:

I’ll take a late Christmas present..

  17. MTM Says:

Schiano would be a perfect match for Penn State HC job or any job other than Bucs HC. Greg you can take all 28 assistant coaches with you too! Your done in Tampa!

  18. buc4lyfe Says:

Best news I’ve heard since preseason started

  19. Clowney Says:

    We can only hope.

Wait, a second, if Greg quits that means over 50 coaches, assistant and spies will be out of a job. Doesn’t he have some type of personal creed about trust and loyalty that he lives by?

Judging by the way he handled Brian Price, he’ll probably pull a Jimmy Johnson move and leave his wife back in Tampa.

I used to root for any team playing against Notre Dame. Yesterday I cheered the Golden Domers as they stomped the hapless Rutgers team.

  20. P'cola Buc Says:

I think the following will occur.
    Schiano does NOT get fired.
Schiano is offered the Head Coach position at Penn state.
Schiano accepts this job stating it was something he has always wanted (and saves face).
    Glazers save several million dollars.
Fans & the Bucs get a new Head Coach.
The only thing that would complete this beautifully is if the bucs get O’brien as their next head coach…. But looks like he is headed to Texas.
    Welcome Lovie???
I could be wrong…. But it’s a nice scenario to think about!

  21. Destinjohnny Says:

    Can they take dom too??

  22. Mr. Patrick Says:

If the story is true and Penn State really can talk Schiano into coming there, it really gives the Glazers a great way out of what they know is a horrible situation. I wonder if they are trying to talk him into it? I would be

  23. That Guy Says:

If Gregory is back next year, I’m hoping the Lighting schedule some Sunday games, since my schedule will be freed up in 2014.

  24. Mark Says:

    Marty Schottenheimer????

  25. Chef Paul Says:

I hope he gets/takes it. Not because I want him gone or anything, (even though I change my opinion on that more than I change my underwear) but because I think its what is best for him. He could succeed in the Big Ten. His game day philosophy is pretty much the whole conference’s philosophy. Ground and pound with a strong defense. It fits him perfectly, and I think he knows that.

  26. DallasBuc Says:

I get the feeling that Marty Schottenheimer’s nursing home has a strict policy that would prevent him from leaving the premises without a family member. But otherwise a great idea!…go figure

  27. Mr. Patrick Says:

Several media sources an outlets reporting Schiano will be back with Bucs

  28. Ashkan Says:

Wow great news for Bucs fans, I thought if we finish today strong he could stay which would suck, but Penn St. will hopefully steal him away!

  29. That Guy Says:

    @Patrick Go Lightning!

  30. Chef Paul Says:

Think about this. IF Penn State offers him the job and he takes it. That will probably be AFTER O’Brien finds an NFL gig. That means we will START looking for a head coach AFTER at least one team has already found theirs.

  31. NY Buc Says:

    @DallasBuc

Too funny! And to whoever it was wanting Shanahan…please stop the insane talk now. Replacing one mediocre coach for another team’s mediocre coach whose name they recognize probably won’t somehow magically turn the Bucs into an overnight winner. Good drafts are far more likely to turn things around.

  32. Jerry Says:

ESPN Chris Mort and Jay Glazer both agree that Schiano will be back with the Bucs in 2014.

  33. Suq Maddiq Says:

    BRING BACK CHUCKY

  34. JonBuc Says:

The ultimate irony…. Greggy has been horrible..another place wants him still…and given The Bucs luck of late he’ll stay out of stubborness & spite.

  35. jojo Says:

I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but I sat around this morning with my boy and we are just plain over it, we as a team have not been relevant since 2008. Think about that that was 6 seasons ago I was only 34 now im 40 and we have sucked, we continue to go to every game, spend money, for what to feel like trash. I really don’t think I can support this team anymore if big changes are not made, I went thru the 80′s as a kid and early 90′s going to games getting blown out, but at least then I had hope, I just am running out of it quickly, Schiano is a douche bag man.

  36. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ jojo
You are in the majority my friend

  37. Richard Says:

Those saying Schiano will be back with the Bucs are referring to the possibility of him being fired, not if he will take the Penn State job if offered.

  38. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

The perfect scenario is unfolding before our eyes: Glazers don’t have to fire Schiano because he takes Penn State job. Yay! Everyone saves face which is cool, and we, the fans, are happy too! Yay! The Boyz have to take advantage of the gift and demote or fire Dom and bring people who know what they are doing.

  39. chipbuc Says:

Since when have Chris Mort or Jay Glazer been right about any thing. Who knows at this point.

  40. BigMacAttack Says:

Schiano only makes $3mil/yr??? What a cheap joke. I had no idea. Good HC’s make $6-7. Payton gets $9 I think. He may suck but they are paying nothing?

  41. Bucfan#37 Says:

Schiano is a good defensive coach, offense, forget about it. He will fit in well if he winds up at Penn St. I never liked the happy valley team anyway. I’m torn on whether Schiano stays or goes. He would probably elevate our defense to top 5 status. Hire a high profile offensive coordinator to fix this woeful offense.

  42. MTM Says:

Hopefully the Amish wonder twins will start the coaching search before the top prospects are taken.

    Use Schiano clusterf&ck for reference.

  43. Splengo Says:

Not gonna get my hopes up. Keep the cork in the bottle a little while longer.

  44. Buc Neckid Says:

    Good Coach for Penn State

  45. Gt40bear Says:

Beyond caring. Will pull for Bucs whoever they have because I’m gluten for punishment. Whatever.

  46. Bucincharlotte Says:

Love how everyone that hates Schiano trust that the glazers (who signed off on his hire) will sign a better coach.

  47. My Buc-O's Says:

Maybe Penn State will take Domnic as a waterboy too….let us pray!!

  48. Greg Says:

Well crap, I was hoping Schiano would take the Texas job so OU could kick the shit out of Texas for years, but Penn State will do just as well. But I have to agree with JonBuc, it’ll be the Bucs luck that Schiano will be hardheaded and not take the Penn State job. The only good thing that can come from Schiano staying an additional year is that the guy can draft some players, so he’d set the next coach up with three straight years of good drafts. Dominic needs to be moved to a VP position overseeing the salary cap, outside of a can’t miss with GMC and hitting on Mike Williams, his drafts were average to below average before Schiano took over. There’s so many holes on this team though, and no light at the end of this tunnel we’re in.

  49. BucYou Says:

    Does anyone really care anymore??

  50. zack49 Says:

the coach has got to go or i will never watch them until hes gone , man he sucks i thought john mckay was bad

  51. Brandon Says:

If Schiano returns I declare my status for week 1 next season as officially “questionable”.
