Schiano Quotes Sticking With Derrick Brooks

November 30th, 2013

Before the Bucs beating of the Lions, Bucs icon Derrick Brooks talked about how Mike Glennon is a Greg Schiano man.

Speaking to Steve Duemig on WDAE-AM 620, Brooks noted that more than anything else, Glennon is pleasing his head coach and doing as he’s told.

Brooks said Glennon is performing per his coach’s instructions, but it goes a step further.

“When you go back and think about several of the quotes that Coach Schiano said when he made the quarterback change, one of the quotes that very distinctly stood out to me was, ‘We want somebody at the quarterback position that’s going to do what we say in the game plan,’” Brooks said. “And that stuck with me in terms of, you know, his relationship with Josh [Freeman]. And maybe that wasn’t happening. Or maybe they was expecting something, but that quote stood with me. And it seems to be when [Schiano] talks about his quarterback after a game, a lot of it is, Mike Glennon, you know for good, better or indifferent, is sticking to the play script.”

Schiano’s No. 1 core belief is “Trust.” And it’s extraordinarily clear that he trusts Glennon implicitly.

Even if Glennon stumbles and looks more like a rookie during his final five games, as long as he’s a good soldier in the New Schiano Order, Joe’s confident Glennon will be “the guy” under Schiano next season. But that wouldn’t mean drafting a QB is out of the question.

Freeman was missing part of the game plan with no ability to hit anything within 10 yards. Shot puts into the dirt are a thing of the past. Glennon has great touch on any check down throws although will take more time to get on the same page with all 5 available.

No more Mike Sullivan on the bench with the QB using crayons, and charts trying to explain what the game plan is all day long, and showing the QB draft bust where he should have went with the ball.

The O line is doing a great job again, and hopefully they keep the cupboard full in the future.

A back up is needed, but Orlovsky and Glennon obviously get along well, and may get by with a vet QB, or later round draft pick. No need to waste a pick in the first round on a QB unless a major injury occurs.

  2. Captain Stagger Says:

Pick up someone like Quinn/Anderson/Garrard to compete with Dan-o and take McCarron in the 6th.

Yes, drafting a QB is out of the question. You’re taking another stand, Joe, that you’ll have to eat crow on. Don’t you ever get sick of crow? One would think your belly was full after stating over and over that Freeman gave us the best chance to win and implying he wasn’t going anywhere this season.

Joe’s always happy to eat crow if it ends in good things for the Bucs. Joe gives hundreds of opinions and assessments a year. You are welcome to scrutinize them. –Joe

  4. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Sometimes Joe goes on a binge of intentionally provoking his readers just for fun and that’s when I slow down on my JBF visits. Sometimes Joe just doesn’t respect his readers for some reason and thinks it’s all a game. Manziel will never be a Buc and won’t even be on their draft board, so quit taking these phony “stands”.

Please don’t lie about Joe. Joe likes Johnny Football, and Joe is confident the Bucs will have a scheduled pre-draft visit with him at One Buc and at the combine. No, Joe doesn’t believe the Bucs have already eliminated Johnny Football from their consideration. –Joe

Every time RG3 goes down the Redskins are very happy that they drafted 2 QB’s

  6. TAC Says:

“gave us the best chance to win”

There were very few that “demanded” Glennon to start the season(mob was right). I figured Freeman would get four games to see if he could be anything other that a bust QB in Tampa, he got the hook earlier, and his piss poor ability to even manage a series by himself(see first series against Jets, f’n ugliest series I can ever remember) and said all that is needed of his time as the starting QB in Tampa.

This is the 1st chapter of Glennon as a starter, but that guy has really worked his tail off and playing in Seattle was easy to see. There is plenty of reasons to draft a QB that falls to them in the draft, but I don’t think they get the Job without a major injury to the 3rd round steal last year.

To many other needs to waste that pick right now.

    Excellent point , Mr. Patrick

  8. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Oh we should definitely sign or draft another QB. No doubt about it. But it should be as a capable backup and replacement for Orlovsky. Not as someone to cause a QB controversy with Glennon. And that type of player won’t be selected prior to the 4th round if at all. My money is on a free agent signing, not a draft pick.

  9. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Feeling a little ornery today, Joe. Sorry to take it out on you. Keep up the good work.

P.S. I still hate Manziel and I think Schiano does too.

Freeman’s first series against the Jets- Maybe he was trying to stick to the script- Do what the coach says….

Anyways, I think all the gung ho Glennon is great and Schiano has turned around the team is still very premature. Before saying that Glennon is the next franchise QB, i think we need to give him another season. The other teams will have game tape on him and then see how he reacts to the game plans of other teams.

Schiano- Still needs to go… They almost lost the Miami game. Against Detroit, With all the turnovers, again it was a narrow win. the only good game was against Seattle, however in that game as well, they did not score any points. And it took him too long to realize whats good for the team and whats not good (D line fiasco with Stunts)

  11. madmacskillz Says:

The comment about eating crow was interesting, and Joe’s response was perfect. Joe has to walk a balance between having and sharing an opinion vs. acting like a news reporter and just reporting the facts. Too much opinion and you turn people off. Not enough opinion and you turn people off.

I’ve posted when I thought Joe was distributing taffy, and for my money Joe leans ever slightly into the “too much opinion not enough fact” department, but this IS the best Bucs site. By far.

Joe was wrong about Freeman, Joe was wrong about the “Glennon Mob,” and Joe’s been wrong about other things. But he was right about Schiano – you watch, he will be back next year.

If there’s one weakness in Joe’s overall game, it’s that Joe isn’t good at saying he was wrong. He might say “It turns out that Glennon was good after all” or something like that. I think people would like it more if Joe would say “Boy I really screwed THAT prediction up.” But Joe has to be Joe, and madmacskillz understands that. See what I did there?

I like the fact that Joe wasn’t bothered by the crow comment. More than like it, I respect it.

  12. stevek Says:

    madmacskillz,

The “Glennon Mob” was never real. It was only those who caught onto “Rip Van Freeman” and his childish ways.

The 620 Big Darrell called our new QB: “Opey”, “Bean Stalk”, and still hasn’t admitted he too was wrong about Glennon.

    Go Glennon, keep on winnin!

I am still eating crow from GMC, and it is delicious. I had no idea GMC would ever be this good, I would honestly take him over Suh at this point, never thought it would be like that. :)

You people just do not grasp common sense. Since Swagger was insulting toward my points in another article, here is a response that should make things clear.

Now, if you people cannot grasp the common sense involve, well then…remain self-dellusional.

  14. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

stevek, Glennon may well prove out to be a great quarterback. But you are jumping the gun. A few good performances against very, very bad teams proves nothing.

You cannot deny this. Nor can you deny myself, Joe or any of the skeptics the right to demand further proof before making up our minds on Glennon.

My position is this..as a Bucs fan since inception I have seen many quarter acks come and go with this team, and nearly every one was accompanied by a euforia a.ongst the fans, only to be met with disappointment later.

I, therefore, perfer solid proof over an extended period against suitable competition before I but into ANY quarterback.

If the Bucs were to draft a first or second round QB in the next draft, I would still support Glennon as the starter if he earned the right. And if he proved to be elite eventually, I would be more than happy. It would mean that pick of ours would make great trade bait next year…at a time when our oline needs revamping.

And if Glennon fails next year? Then we have so.eone waiting in the wings that can step in.

Typos are a result of constantly loading screens on a mobile device. Grrr.

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I think people tend to forget Joe is more than a blogger. He is also a fan…one who goes through the same emotions as any.

  17. Couch Fan Says:

Winning against good teams or bad teams is meaningless. A win is a win and Ill take one any way we can get it. Glennon has proven so far that he is good enough to win without very many weapons and a tough schedule.

Where were these excuses when you were defending Freeman with your life this past off season? Lol, to funny. Keep it coming Bonzai. Sooner or later you’ll have no choice but to say Glennon is our guy going forward.

    Oh the irony!

  19. Sammy Says:

    @Joe
If Schiano stays then there is no way that the Bucs will be drafting Manziel next year! However that doesn’t mean a visit won’t be scheduled. He’ll go to every team out there. If only to get a scout report on him and see what he can actually do in the NFL game! But Manziel, if Schiano stays, will not be a Buc.

  20. adam from ny Says:

i think glennon’s height is a huge asset and gives him a extra advantage as a rookie…it’s like driving an suv as opposed to a sedan…he gets a higher overview which might be a nice advantage…also i don’t think anyone is saying glennon is the guy…people are thinking “glennon could be the guy”…and it seems totally logical at this point…moving forward, the question is, especially next season – with enough game film on him, will defensive coordinators be able to pick up tendencies that create a second year slump…let’s see how it all pans out…a win in carolina today could be quite a stepping stone to cementing this team as a formidable opponent against anyone – even though the season is over…lets just hope the bucs can score points today as carolina’s defense gives up just under 14 points a game – which is insanely low….adam from ny
