More 1-On-1 Made The Difference

November 17th, 2013

Mike Glennon might be the man in Tampa for the next 15 years, so Joe figured you’d want to hear what he has to say.

Here’s Glennon’s full postgame news conference below. Finally, 1-on-1 coverage at times for Vincent Jackson made a big difference today, Glennon explained. There’s much more, as well. Audio via 620wdae.com.

It’s just a shame that Glennon still can’t impress Joe enough…poor Glennon the “capable backup”. Don’t look now, The Kid is getting better and better. Just think if he had started week 1, what he might have looked like by now.

The best post of the day from the gameday thread (I was attending the blowout at RJS) came from Splengo a rabid Schiano hater. Capt Tim you come in second place with your might I might jump on the Schiano bandwagon comment. 6 games people that’s what I say is Schiano’s magic number. Stay tuned.

“If we beat the Lions, I will vote to keep Schiano no matter what happens the remainder of the season. Otherwise, I’m back on death watch!”

  2. Free's A Boob Says:

Glennon was a steal, but BD hates Schiano = hates Glennon and Joe wags his tail on command

  3. Buc1987 Says:

Free’s A Boob…that has got to be the funniest damn thing I ever seen you type. It’s all true too. Hilarious stuff. Ha ha ha ha.

  4. Tom Says:

MG might be a steal of the draft….I bet all OLs, Rbs, and Wrs corps respect him.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The O-line is playing well…. Glennon is better protected than he thinks…and he will start to realize that and hit more open recievers mid & long range….
I think his three incomplete passes were throw aways!!

Before the season if you would have told me we would win two games without Freeman, Martin, Nicks, Williams & Barth…I would have thought you were nuts…but we have.

I will guarantee you we won’t catch the Lions off guard…they will be ready…and I’m looking forward to Megatron vs Revis!!!

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our O-line is playing so well….the Buc Realist & Dominick could run for 100 holding hands….

  7. Buc1987 Says:

TBBF…today was….FUN! I needed this rout so bad. It felt soooo good. Many fans were leaving early in the 4th. I refused to move from my seat. I was relishing the victory. I got up at the 2 minute warning and went over by the Bucs tunnel to wait for them at the end of the game. VJax jumped into the stands and high five fans for about a minute or so. Everyone was cheering like mad for them when they left the field.

    TBBF…today was…Fun!

  8. Stevek Says:

    Winnin’ with Glennon.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Yea…I TIVOd the game….came back from an Eagles concert in Greensboro…..I had a lot of fun….My neighbor is a huge Falcon fan and he is distressed. He said our team is much, much better than our record and we have a great deal to look forward to. He likes our mixture of youth and high-profile vets.

Actually, Buc1987, assuming you’ve been a fan for a good while, I want you to think back a sec. Consider the past…20 years? Of QBs here at the Bucs.

Isn’t it true that the Bucs have never had an elite franchise quarterback? Why do you think that is? Because we see one QB have an okay string of games and we always put all our eggs in that one basket.

Then the next year comes around and teams have done their homework on him…and that’s the end of that. Tampa is a breeding place for one year wonders. Not just at QB.

We need to take a QB in the first round of the draft.

    Period.

  11. Saskbuco Says:

Depending on how we finish…..If a franchise (potential) QB is there where the Bucs draft, then you take him. “NEVER EVER pass on QB unless you have one”- Pat Kirwan. Glennon has looked good, better than I expected. Joe is 100% correct if we finish strong and Schiano isn’t S_I_T canned, then MG is the bucs QB going forward. If GS is gone and if a new GM comes in, then the new coach and GM will want their own QB, you can’t pass on the top 1-2 QB in the draft if your a new regime. I just want the BUCS to keep winning, and wish Schiano didn’t wait so long to adapt his “style” of coaching. I also think it takes 5-6 wins for him to stick around. As far as Glennon, he will never be able to throw the deep ball that good, it’s not his game and he waits for the WR to be open (smart decisions) before he throw’s it most times. He has many qualities to like going forward, the body of work is too small to know if he is the long term answer at QB, he can no doubt be a solid NFL starter, but franchise QB (take team on my back and carry, bring the team back, no opponents lead is safe, pure gunslinger, pro bowl, MVP candidate) It’s too early to tell, but I don’t think he will ever be that guy, but there is only a select few of those types anyway. So maybe solid NFL starter on a good team is enough? It will be interesting to see how it all plays out and unfolds, but if it goes back to how it was…………………………..there will be a new QB in Tampa in 2014.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Bonzai…there is NO gaurantee that the rookie QB in next years draft will pan out. There has been a GREAT GREAT deal of 1st round busts at QB over the years. More busts than successful ones. Hmmm I once knew a guy named Vinny.

    Period.

  13. Jason Says:

I’ve said this about a month ago, for schiano to not get fired he would have to change his whole identity. I’m still madder than hell that it took him 9 weeks to start listening to his players and saying to their strengths but damn the bucs look good as they should with the talent they have on this team. But for me to want schiano back he has to keep doing what he’s doing and we have to beat Carolina and sf or the saints. Just a shame we could’ve been 7-3 right now if he wouldn’t have been so pig headed.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

Saskbuco…who is that “franchise QB” coming out of this draft? Which one, and is Matt Ryan a “franchise QB”? It takes a team to win, not just a “franchise QB”. Has Matt Ryan looked like a “franchise QB” this season that can carry his team on his back?

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Glennon did complete a lot of passes and some long ones too. He seems to be getting better each game. I give credit for that.

But teams do not have much tape on him yet.

And the long passes are still not as good as I prefer. His accuracy is at least a bit off and once teams get more tape they will use that…unless he continues to improve.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

Vinny was supposed to be a “franchise QB” too.

  17. Tony Says:

I don’t see a franchise QB I this draft. It sure as heck isn’t Bridgewater.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

Who does Glennon have to throw to? Vjax and who? Underwood and Wright? No Mike Williams. Glennons working with junk right now and making it work. The deep ball may get better and if it does, look out. He does have rifle, hecan get the ball down there. Maybe’s it’s a timing issue.

Bonzai it’s the same thing with every QB in the league, teams have film on them and will try and stop them. It does not translate into being able too. We’ll see though, we’ll see. 6 wins, the Bucs won’t draft high enough to get that “franchise QB” and Schiano will stay anyways. If that happens that might piss off a lot of fans though.

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“Bonzai…there is NO gaurantee that the rookie QB in next years draft will pan out.”

That is exactly my point. By drafting one we have two eggs in the basket, not just one. That way if Glennon works out we have top-notch trade bait with the new guy, and if Glennon doesn’t work out we have a fallback plan.

First round QBs have been backups before. Arron Rodgers for example. And with the new rolkie salaries first rounders do not have to start right away.

Make hte new guy earn a starting role by being better than Glennon. If Glennon is the next Tom Brady then we can trade the drafted guy for good picks…just like the Pats traded their backup.

  20. Free's A Boob Says:

How’s RGIII looking this year? Or Flacco? Or Tannehill…list goes on and on.

  21. Saskbuco Says:

    @Bucs1987

Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota (if he comes out), Johnny Manziel (if he comes out) are 3 potential “franchise type” guys, if you would of read my post (which you probably scanned over) I said if we begin to play bad again will be drafting in top 3 and a new GM/Coach will draft a QB. I never said any of them are sure fire hall of famers, and many are busts, I said if its deemed we don’t have a franchise QB (By new regime), there is no way they will pass on a QB. READ THE POST………….

Yes Matt Ryan is franchise QB, the Falcons are missing all their key players or they have them and aren’t 100%, how do you think Glennon would do under the FalCANTS O line??? I’m not a big Matt Ryan fan, and these are the most word I’ve ever typed about the damn Falcons and Ryan, so thanks Buc1987 for that. NO KIDDING IT Takes a team to win, but QB is by far the most important position in any sport.

Is Andrew Luck a “franchise QB”?, the whole point of the post you missed (no surprise) and I SAID I HOPE THE BUCS KEEP WINNING, in other words Schiano and Glennon stay and we become a playoff team……………….

  22. WalkdaPlank Says:

I have to admit, I was a “Freemanite” from the Packers game up until the whole media circus following Week 3. I had slowly started to regress (like Freeman did) in my support for him, because he continuously let us down with his play. It was a do or die year for him and he didn’t get the job done. While I don’t think the way he got isolated and kicked off the team was the right way to go about it, he certainly wasn’t the “franchise QB” we needed.

Then here comes Mike Glennon, a string-bean, pencil-neck, 3rd round rookie QB outta N.C State. Now I probably watch college football just as much, if not more than NFL football, and before we drafted him I had never heard of this guy even though I remember watching the N.C State/Louisville Bowl Game in 2011. I’ll be honest, I did not expect him to come in here and take Freeman’s job after just 3 games, and I certainly did not expect him to be playing so well. For a guy that was thrust into a tough spot starting role in Week 4, and is a 3rd round rookie, I have loved what I have seen from Mike Glennon and am about to hitch a ride on the Glennon bandwagon.

I would like to see the Bucs draft a QB like Manziel, Aaron Murray, or Mariota but honestly if Glennon can keep playing like he has that saves us from having to use a 1st rounder on a QB and instead can use it on another critical player we need. Like a good DE (Clowney) or beef up our O-Line (Matthews).

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Saskbuco..I read the word “potential” quite clearly thank you. You also think that Matt Ryan is a “franchise QB” that can carry a team on his back. No need for anyone else right, no Roddy or Julio? Kind of like the Bucs losing Mike Williams and Doug Martin. Glennon is working with junk and it’s working so the same thing applies to Glennon that it does to Ryan. They are both missing key weapons. Only our guy is just a rookie 3rd round pick.

And of course most Buc fans want this team to keep winning and win out. That would shock the NFL world if they go 8-8 and squeek into a wild card. Oh one can dream, if even for a week.

  24. WalkdaPlank Says:

But I’ll say again, if the season ended today I’d probably still want Schiano gone. I am a very happy Bucs fan watching my team go on a 2 game winning streak and destroying the Falcons. But let’s not forget what has transpired before the 2 wins. And the 2 wins themselves were against one mediocre team and one team having a terrible season. Now if the Bucs can win against Detroit next week, that’s a completely different story. Schiano will really start turning heads if he can beat the 6-4, NFC North leading Lions to go on a 3 game winning streak after starting 0-8.

  25. Buc1987 Says:

Chris Spielman (not a QB guru) said while broadcasting a Noles game this season. “Jameis Winston is the most NFL ready QB in college football right now.” He means as in every college QB there is out there and eligible this for the draft. I agree with him outside of Mariotta and that’s not just from being a Noles fan either. Since there won’t be no Winston in the draft in 2014. It’s Mariotta or Mike Glennon for me, I’d prefer O-line though. Or just keep winning damn it. I know these last 2 teams were weakened, but winning can become contagious. So can losing as we have seen far too many times. I don’t like Teddy and I don’t like Johnny football as NFL qb’s. Manziel just reminds me too much of the Vinny hype machine.

Bonzai I do see your point about having more than one egg, but this team needs help in other areas as well. Besides where’s that homerism Bonzai? The Bucs are going to keep winning right? The pick might not be high enough if they keep winning anyways. Let’s just hope they keep winning. I don’t care about the draft slot. Homie don’t play that. I want wins damn it. At this point if they go 7-9. I might go to One Buc myself and tell Greg, I’m sorry.

  26. WalkdaPlank Says:

@Buc1987 – what are your thoughts on UGA QB Aaron Murray? I personally think the kid is very underrated and it baffles me. Is it his size? Is it his numbers, because those have been very good and he plays in the SEC not the garbage division Teddy’s Cardinals are in.

  27. Saskbuco Says:

@Buc1987………….Here we go again, no disrespect to MW19 but he’s not in the same category as Jones or White and Martin wasn’t running as good (mostly due to our Oline being horrific) as James or Rainey, so that point has next to no merit. ITS NOT ABOUT THE WEAPONS it’s about PROTECTION and having time to throw the ball….I don’t know why I even argue with you. I’m not talking about the Falcons anymore…DONE. Glennon is missing his 2nd WR, not 1st and 2nd (who both are better than our #2 WR). Take Vjax away and we would be in a world of hurt, at times no one can cover him and his catches (when he doesn’t drop) are spectacular.

As far as not liking Bridgewater or Johnny Football that’s your opinion, as Teddy is a solid NFL prospect and one of the best QB prospects to come out in quite some time and Manziel is just so much fun to watch (not saying I’m a fan or is he will succeed at next level) but can’t deny his moxie or uncanny ability to make plays and win games.

Finally agree on something, Mariota. But I just hope they win and we don’t have to worry about draft position.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

WalkdaPlank…ya know to tell ya the truth, I might need to watch a few highlight reels of Murray. I’ve only seen one UGA game this season, so I really can’t base too much off of that one game. I stay up pretty late every night, so I’ve caught more than a few Oregon games this season.

saskbuco…I’m sorry if 1st round QB’s scare the hell out of me. Manziel is certainly fun to watch and he is carrying that team on his back. I’m just leery of 1st round QB’s. Unless it’s an Andrew Luck which is a slam dunk. Vinny Testeverde ruined me for life when it comes to first round QB’s, I mean he was 1st overall. I don’t know let’s just hope they keep winning, because it does feel awfully good.

  29. chris Says:

Marcus Mariota is not a polished NFL QB prospect and I would not touch him in round 1. He’s too raw and is more of a developmental type prospect who is extremely hard to get a read on coming from that Oregon offense. He doesn’t make enough throws that are considered NFL quality/NFL throws on a consistent basis.

That being said, my evaluation on Glennon from day 1: He’s a stronge armed Matt Ryan. He’s been improving every week and the ONLY QB i’m taking to upgrade in this years draft in round 1, is Bridgewater because he’s just going to be a stud. Same with Winston, although he;s not elligible. So, in that case, lets get Glennon some weapons and protection. I’d honestly, love to go out in FA and sign Michael Johnson from Cincy, he’s gone and put him at RDE.

Then in the draft, get Sammy Watkins in round 1, Austin S. Jenkins in round 2, and a G in round 4. Build around Glennon.

  30. chris Says:

Also to shed some salary, Cut nicks. Meredith has been very good filling in the past 2 years at G and Nicks is eating all that cash while sitting.

  31. WalkdaPlank Says:

Here is just an idea that came to my mind about the 2014 draft when it comes to the 1st round. I think we could go after a non-QB with our first pick, whether it be a DE, OT, TE or whatever. Then we should work our way back into the first round to snatch Aaron Murray because to me he is a highly talented, underrated QB in next year’s draft class. Depending on how well Glennon plays will determine Murray’s role.

Either Murray wins the job in the preseason and worst-case scenario is that Glennon has to come in off the bench to start (something he’s already done well as a rookie this year), or Glennon gets the job because of his awesome play from 2013 (assuming he plays well the last 6 games) and we develop Murray on the side and worst case scenario is that Murray has to come off the bench to start. And I think he has the potential to do that day 1, but we all know that good college ball doesn’t always translate to good NFL ball, but that’s why having Glennon would make it less of a risk because he has proved he can come off the bench and throw winnable games.

  32. Chris Says:

Can’t be playing musical qbs. I like Murray but glennon has shown what he can do and he’s been doings it well and progressing.

  33. Jordan Says:

Hate to bust your bubble, but we aren’t drafting a QB in the 1st round. Why not? Because we needed a “backup” for Josh this past year and we didn’t even draft one until the 3rd round. And I guarantee that Dom and Schiano have way more faith in Glennon than they did in Freeman.

  34. Joe Says:

Yes. As Joe has written many times before, if Greg Schiano returns as coach, Glennon is his guy.

  35. IMiss#40 Says:

I like what Glennon has done, he has some skills…here it comes…however…he doesn’t work his progressions well, he stares down his 1st read, and doesn’t keep his eyes down field when the pocket starts to break down. I’m not hating on the guy, just some observations. Someone stated earlier, there isn’t a lot of film on the kid yet. Once there is a book you will see teams scheme him more and his production will drop off, he may be able to improve, but we need at least until the end of the season to judge.

I like the idea of taking another offensive skill player in the first round if you don’t go QB. Honestly I trade back to pick up a second rounder, take the best WR/TE on the board. Then use a second on Aaron Murray [yes he will be there at the top of the second] or Carr. That way if Glennon pans out he has another weapon, if he has a high potential back up waiting in the wings who has weapons at his disposal. Just my2cents

  36. Ed Says:

There once was a wide receiver named Chris Carter who Buddy Ryan cut because “all he could do is catch touchdowns”. Glennon doesn’t have the deep ball down yet but he does throw touchdowns. His jump ball TD to Jackson was a perfect ball. He is right on the money on his crossing route throws. Sure you can nitpick his faults. His intelligence is an asset. If you watched any of the Eagles-Redskins game, when it was on the line RGIII threw an ill advised pass on 3rd down when his team was in a position to possibly tie the game w a TD and 2point conversion.

Right now who is playing better QB, RGIII, Colin Kaepernick or Mike Glennon?

The answer is Glennon is playing more like a vet than either of those 2 are.

Did Eagle fans think when Nick Foles was drafted he was a “franchise QB”. Certainly not and he is proving his worthiness.

It’s not about potential, it’s about what you do on the field and since Seattle Mike Glennon has shown that he puts his team in position to win.
