The WRs’ route-running was not so hot at times in 2012; I hope Garrett can fix that.

Good point about signing “average” starters in FA and keeping the draft picks, FATMOSH. There is no way to know if a 2nd or 3rd rounder at any position will be ready to contribute in year 1 or 2. Half the time they never contribute. So sign starters and draft lottery ticket superstars is the way to go, every team does it.

As for Martellus Bennett, he is a decent TE, we should have got him last year! BUT, if the guys who mentioned Hard Knocks above are right, we just declined to be in the running for him. Also, I know that he hardly played in Dallas, shot off his mouth about it, and the coaches too! So, it’s probably going to work out the opposite that all the optimists think, and we may even lose his brother over it too?

Yes, there is a need, because then you’d still have that 2nd or 3rd round pick available for another player!

If signing Martellus is the only chance of getting Michael here I say who gives if he’s the best TE haha. Atleast I hope we do whatever is necessary to sign Michael.

That is a real good point, they probably have a real close relationship and that def would up his interest to sign here I would think.

Theres no need to get Martellus when we could get just as good of a TE in the 2nd or even 3rd round of the draft. Im sure the bucs will make at the very least a half harted attempt to sign Martellus, so if they cant get him the draft is a good backup plan. Plus didnt he have some issues with an attitude problem while with the cowgirls. If we get him great, but if we dont get him I wont be dissapointed one bit.

I realize that he was hired to be the WR coach (the TE coach job isn’t vacant anyways), but my point is that John Garrett might be a man that has Martellus Bennett’s ear from their time together in Dallas, that can tell him, from personal experience, that the Buccaneers are a great organization and that he’ll have the opportunity to play with his brother. It’s extremely possible that there is absolutely no correlation between John Garrett’s hire and a future pursuit of Martellus Bennett, but I find the idea intriguing.

And speaking of Jason Garrett (if I remember correctly), I think that when he was our 3rd string QB, he also acted as an unofficial “players” QB coach. I woud like the hire, but I thik if he take an OC job before he’d take a position coach job, althouh I could be wrong.

Schiano hired John Garrett to be the WR coach though, there would have been more merit if he was hired in as TE coach. I wouldn’t mind hiring Jason Garrett as our QB coach if J.Jones fires him. Move McNulty to WR coach

Think he played QB in college then converted to WR. Served as a pro scout for us in the early 90′s. Like Joe, I think it serves us well that he played at the pro level, even as a practice squad/secondary league player. Gives him a sense of the speed of the game at this level. Decent hire IMHO.

Speaking of Martellus Bennett, could hiring his old position coach be a sign that the Bucs will try to get him to sign with Tampa to convince his brother, Michael Bennett, to resign with the team while upgading the TE position at the same time? They have expressed their desire to play together.
