Punts are harder to catch than kickoffs. On punts the ball spirals and is affected by the wind, kickoffs are usually flipping end over end and usually land deep in the endzone resulting in touchbacks. Punts are usually shorter than kickoffs so there is less time to react once you catch the ball. The NFL punt return average is only about 11 yards per return. 11 yards is not a big enough reward to risk losing focus on catching the ball trying to get a headstart on the coverage team. If the returner would concentrate on securing the catch first and then fell to the ground would be better than taking their eyes off the ball looking for an open lane. Sure there is the 1 in 50 chance he could break it to the house, but the odds are still an 11 yard return avg. The risk outweighs the reward, especially since our offense has been efficiently moving the ball downfield from anywhere they start. Just catch the ball.
