Joe/941,

Thanks for the info on "biting the ball". Looked quirky to me on the practice video. But if this exercise will help ingrain the idea of protecting the ball and prevent fumbling or stripping, it is a good thing and I hope it improves our ability to hold onto the ball.

In practice, they will train to hold it just under their face mask (which gives the appearance of them "Biting the football). During Live action, they will more then likely hold it high on their Pectoral Muscle just above the nipple and tucked against theirs arm.

The training help give the arm more tendency to hold the ball higher "naturally".

For clarification it's also known as "High and Tight". It simply means holding the ball higher up your chest and locked into what is known as a "Perfect Football Pocket" inside your arm. It keeps the ball protected at all 5 points, thus stopping others from "stripping" or "punching" the ball out.

Macabee:

Is this an NFL or college technique?

Both. Check out Tiki Barber video. He got over his fumbling by "biting" the ball.

Trent Richardson also "bites" the ball. It's not that uncommon.

I’m trying to understand this “biting the ball” concept of carrying the football. This evening I watched Youtube videos of the 5 leading rushers in the NFL in 2011 – MJD, Ray Rice, Michael Turner, LeSean McCoy, and Arian Foster. Nobody is carrying the ball like the Bucs are being trained in OTAs. I also watched the video of LeGarrette Blount’s 2010 1,000yd season and he’s not carrying the ball like that either.

Is this an NFL or college technique? Is this just for training or will the Bucs ball carriers be expected to use this technique in game situations? Is this unique to Schiano or is this an accepted technique in NFL training camps?

I googled the term and I found one reference to techniques taught in youth football called “screws to the ball” or “biting the football’ for training beginners who have never carried a football.

Please watch videos of the top RBs and do your own evaluation. It may be an accepted and proven methodology and I’m just unfamiliar with it. Would like to know more about it’s origin and effectiveness in the NFL.
