Being Jameis

April 1st, 2019

Bruce Arians explains.

When Bucco Bruce Arians took over the Bucs, part of the reason is he believed he already had a budding young star quarterback with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Arians has coached a virtual Who’s Who of quarterbacks. Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, Carson Palmer. So what attributes does Arians want Jameis to mirror?

Speaking at the coaches breakfast at the NFL owners meetings in Arizona last week, Arians said none.

“I just want him to be Jameis,” Arians said. “Jameis is good enough. He don’t need to be Peyton [Manning]. And he don’t need to be Ben [Roethlisberger]. Just go out and play great football and be Jameis and that’s plenty good enough. I think he is a good kid and a good human being.

“The sky is the limit for him with the talent we have around him. We just have to protect him — and run the ball!”

And that, friends, will be the trick. Joe isn’t ready to jump off the Sunshine Skyway Bridge like so many Bucs fans are after the Bucs decided to retain four of their five starting linemen from last year.

The running game? Well, Arians and his crew might have to sprinkle serious pixie dust there.

Let’s just call it like we see it: The Bucs were simply horrible running the ball last year, second-to-last in the NFL in yards per attempt (3.9), and that includes yards-per-carry totals from Jameis and Ryan Fitzpatrick. And the longest run from scrimmage for the Bucs last year was 28 yards — worst in the NFL!

Joe doesn’t know how Arians is going to reverse this unless he drafts or trades for another running back, or Ronald Jones somehow wakes up.

Joe likes Peyton Barber a whole lot and loves his work ethic but Joe is worn out with people bragging about his effort. Hell, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht could sign his plumber or his pool boy and Joe is certain he’d put out good effort, too. But how about production once in a while?

He’ll start seeing Jameis today throwing live…. Coaches aren’t on the field with players for a while. –Joe

  2. Jmarkbuc Says:

If we could only have Jlicht put out great effort and production..

  3. Bird Says:

    Arians was the right hire

I think Jameis has best year as a buc . Let’s see how far arians can improve his play …

“No risk it no biscuit “ may give me an ulcer but hoping for the best on these slow long developing plays we keep hearing about. And reason Jameis is putting on weight ? He may have to wear Kevlar

  4. Destinjohnny Says:

Let’s see if bruce can make the 23rd best qb a top 20 player at his position.
I still say we should have taken the 3 first round picks philly offered to trade up for this pick

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

“No risk it..no biscuit”…..we’ll see if Jameis gets a biscuit after this season….and if he does it will be a Jameis sized biscuit…not a Patrick Mahomes giant $ 200 mil 7 tier wedding cake

  6. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Make or break for Jameis

Dude has to wake up and play well consistently or go be a backup

  7. Buc4evr Says:

Well everything Bucs Bruce said is great, but our O-line has not improved. No RB can survive being stopped in the backfield on almost every play. Really sad when it’s third down and a foot and our O-line has no push.

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

The only thing worse than looking for a franchise QB, Is thinking that you have one, when you don’t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 season will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans and owners already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Read an article that rojo is on the trading block, sounds like another indictment of licht if that is true. Bucs have done nothing to improve the running game and yet arians knows that a good running game helps a ify qb, not sure how this 5-11 team has improved

  10. Jmarkbuc Says:

Wonder what rojo’s Trade value is. Slim and none?

  11. rrsrq Says:

So JW is putting on weight, likely because BA said go watch Big Ben. But we liked JW at the end of every season, would like for JW to be the JW he was in his rookie season, especially now with these weapons and hopefully a resurgence of a Doug Martin type season from one of these running backs

  12. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Quite telling that Arians felt he needed to say “I think he’s a good kid and a good human being” because there’s obviously a heated debate about that!!!

  13. 813bucboi Says:

    alter

    your right….

BA will be seeing winston and others at practice….BA and other coaches wont be on the field but that wont stop them from watching the practice film and correcting them during their film session…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  14. BrianBucs Says:

    Yep, it’s April Fools Day

  15. Z31 BUCS Says:

    ^ Must be. You’re here.

  16. Eric Says:

Arians, unlike the local goober crowd, understands James and his talents and accomplishments, such as 88 TDs in 3 1/2 years.

    But what does he know.

Better to listen to the gator loving trailer inhabiting civil war reenacting Jack asses who are sprinkled through our fan base.

  17. Arian Nation Says:

Chris Simms (former spleenless Buc) says the 3rd best back in the draft is Darrell Henderson from Memphis. The junior back had 1909 yards rushing in 2018 with 22 rushing TD’s. Chris describes him as “Lightning in a bottle.”

He went on to project him as a late 2nd or early 3rd round draft pick. Perfect spot for the Buc’s 70th pick.

  18. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Sprinkled? LOL….dude, we/they ARE the Bucs fan base!!! That’s partly why this entire Winston affair has been a train wreck. But only partly. MOSTLY because of Winston himself.

  19. Eric Says:

Arians doesn’t think it is a train wreck.

And is staking his reputation on it.

  20. jay adams Says:

Yeah, so Jameis has 88 TDs in 3 1/2 years and also 58 picks in 3 1/2 years.

+ 38 Fumbles in that same time period.

Poor Bruce is going to be so frustrated by the end of the year.

  21. Guzzie Says:

Joe can please change JWs nickname on this site to America’s Dumbest Quarterback or America’s Sex Offender Quarterback those are way more accurate

  22. DooshLaRue Says:

    Who wants ROJO?

  23. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Eric, you’re partially correct. Arians doesn’t THINK Winston is a train wreck…he KNOWS it, and believes he can fix him. I don’t.

  24. Negative Nancy Says:

    Arians is over-rated. sorry.

  25. Z31 BUCS Says:

    ^ You’re over-rated. sorry.

  26. Buc'n Enough of the Same Outcome Says:

Jason Licht has good effort with second round picks….ooops…he has missed on nearly ALL of them!

  27. unbelievable Says:

We just have to protect him — and run the ball!

Amen. It’s almost like we need better play from the o-line?

Here’s to hoping it was really just poor coaching these last few years…

  28. Anonymous Says:

We have to protect him? HAHAHAHA!!! That’s insane. Let’s protect his fragile psyche too.

  29. stpetebucsfan Says:

The Oline is a tale of two lines. Our Oline does NOT totally suck.
People simply do not wish to face the truth. Just google Football Outsiders and 2018 NFL line play.

We were second from the last…31st in the league in run blocking. That does suck! However in pass protection we were 15th. That’s a major difference. If we were 15th in run blocking we would have been right there with Pittsburgh and our RB’s would have averaged 3/4 of a yard more.

I certainly concede that our poor run blocking made JW’s job difficult as well as Barber’s. One of JW’s greatest skills is the play action pass but without a running threat that goes out the window. If BA can teach our OL to run block as well as they pass block our offense is going to take off like a rocket.

  30. Anonymous Says:

    Apparently Joe made me “Anonymous”?

  31. Z31 BUCS Says:

    ^ You made yourself anonymous.

  32. Bucs96 Doggie Says:

Jameis hasn’t had a running game for 2 yrs & really only had 1 season where the running was good. Go figure that was the season he had a winning season. No running game, horrible defense, horrible kicking game BUT Jameis is the problem.

Idk when ppl will start opening their eyes & realize this kid isn’t the issue! Far from it!
