Yes, Bucs Hold Hammer

March 10th, 2019
DeSean Jackson

Under team control.

A loyal reader of Joe’s yesterday asked Joe a question about malcontent Bucs receiver DeSean Jackson. It wasn’t the first time.

On the heels of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, telling a national TV audience Friday night on NFL Network that he wants Jackson back, this Bucs fan had a good question: “Don’t people understand it is not up to Jackson if he returns?”

Yes, Jackson is under contract for one more season at $10 million.

Joe answered the question as to why the Bucs look like desperate teenagers who got dumped by a high school cheerleader. The Bucs love the talent Jackson possesses. They don’t like all the baggage that comes with it.

Jackson, since he came to the Bucs in 2017, has hassled with coaches, asked for a trade, tried to get the franchise quarterback run out of town (even resorting to a national television address), slept in meetings, blew off meetings, didn’t take notes in meetings, destroyed a Christmas display and aside from a handful of plays has been invisible on the field.

For these reasons, Bucs staffers are trying to figure out if there is any way Jackson can somehow put his ego and inflated entitled sense of self-worth on the shelf for seven months, play ball and be a good teammate.

Yeah, the Bucs hold the hammer with Jackson, who is unlikely to find a team to cough up $10 million for his stunts that outnumber his touchdowns.

Why would the Bucs force the guy on the team for 2019 if he’s going to be a cancer again?

Licht should be on the phone with the Texans, Bengals and Bills. They have the cap space and Jackson pairing with Hopkins or Green may sound good to the Texans or Bengals and the Bills may be interested due to the fact they were just in negotiations for AB. Licht should be able to acquire at least a 4th or 5th for him

  2. Kobe Faker Says:

“Move him for a 4th round.

BA demise will be trying to change this cancer

The season will be up and down but the ONLY WAY we can somehow be a good team at the end of the year is to be ONE team and fight together

The first sign of confrontation this cancer will split the team in half

This POS will destroy the 2019 season”

Kobe “I cant believe I agree with JBF” Faker

You have written this same article 50 times now (and we know which joe)
Keep them coming. Let’s shoot for 100.
The horse has been dead for months but let’s pretend it’s still alive and keep beating it.

    Thanks

We get it. You don’t like him and want to smear his name and reputation cause he didn’t play nice with your man crush.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wow….I couldn’t start my day without my daily JBF dose of Djax……check that, my twice daily dose of Djax…..or more……

  5. Bob in Valrico Says:

No question Jackson is a pain in the arse and I don’t think we can afford to him or his disruptions. On the plus side, Evans had less double coverage and
produced at the level he is capable of. Its way more difficult for a passer to make
spot throws with double coverage. The defender knows he has help and he can try to press and harass a receiver during the route making it more difficult to get to that type of throw. Not sure if that’s the only reason ,but Jameis’s ball placement and touch improved with Evans last year.

    Pride is his nemesis

  7. Bird Says:

Antonio Brown was traded for a 3rd and 5th rounder

Think we would be lucky to get a 5th for desean.

The bills swung and missed on AB. Let’s see if they will bite on desean. That organization is dysfunctional and lesean McCoy is still there and him and desean are buddies.

Make it happen Licht. They just have to many needs to not get rid of desean and his 10-11 mil.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I’m a Jameis supporter…..everybody should know that…..

This Djax campaign/obsession is all about protecting Jameis…..Djax dissed Jameis and Joe(s) will never give it up.
Jameis had an opportunity to respond and took the high road.

I predict we will continue to hear about Djax long after he is gone….and he will be gone.

  9. RustyRhinos Says:

No. The Bucs hold the Ax.

  10. Bird Says:

Legal tampering free agency start tonight at midnight. Can officially start negotiations with player agents but no deals until Wednesday I believe

Unfortunately , all the top free agents most likely go in first few hours so bucs likely will be quiet.
    Unless they go after Mathieu

Otherwise , we will have to wait until waive 2 and waive 3 for signings.
Will McCoy and DJax still be on team ? Or traded on draft day ?

  11. John B Says:

I’d be happy to get a 5th for him, we could use the 10mil to sign Ross and save 3-4 mil in the process, draft Renfrow to replace Hump and let’s roll

Can’t stand Jackson on or off the field – alligator armed, no ball fighting, light in the britches, one trick pony diva with a mouth and ego 10 times the size of his actual game

    GTFO!!!!!!!

  12. Todd Says:

Joe, you know how you always copy and paste a laundry list full of names preceding a name? Sometimes you highlight these names in red? While I get sick of reading them sometimes, they are effective in driving your points home.

May I humbly request you add “MeSean the Malcontent” in front of the last name “Jackson” every time you reference this jackass narcissist?

    Pretty please?

    Sugar on top?

  13. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Did you ever once think Jaymiss has caused SOME wide receivers to have alligator arms OR get absolutely CRUSHED?

  14. AlteredEgo Says:

LOL….the hammer is all the Bucs hold…IMO…DJax is one hugely pissed man, at the Bucs & Licht, if he can’t go to a SB contender he’ll go to a NFC South team and haunt Jason twice a year…I can see him playing for the Titans just to double up on the pain

  15. Buccaneerscotty Says:

You’ll be luck to get a 7th round pick jackson

  16. Buc4evr Says:

Please Joe let’s hear more about possible draft picks, free agents, even stories about America’s Quarterback, but no more DJax. The guy is a non-factor and a waste of ink.

  17. OneBuc55 Says:

@Scotty…Desean has had alligator arms since he has blasted by James Harrison some years back…

Jameis actually does a great job of not getting his receivers killed…That being said, this is the NFL receivers are gonna get drilled sometimes there’s no way around it…have you not seen some of the shots AB has taken over the years; I guess Ben set him up…

News Flash Desean, this is football sometimes you get hit and your uniform will get dirty from time to time…

  18. tmaxcon Says:

Bucs failed minor league franchise has 20x the baggage djax has… franchise is a complete joke and makes players malcontents by their mickey mouse ways coupled with no intention of trying to win…. bucs are far more of a laughingstock than djax….. SCOREBOARD…..

  19. Pickgrin Says:

    “Bucs Hold Hammer”

    So use it already.

No GM is going to trade for DJax – because nobody is buying this “we want him back” ruse…

It couldn’t be much more transparent that the Bucs have been talking up DJax the last few weeks in an attempt to sucker some team into trading for him and his $10M salary – for ONE year.

You had your chance to trade this malcontent last October Jason – and blew it. Probably could have gotten a 4th rd pick at the trade deadline – maybe a 3rd…

  20. AlteredEgo Says:

Why am I seeing this vision of Jason Licht hitting himself in the head with “his hammer”…uttering a Homer Simpson D’oh ! with each wack…

  21. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Cut him. Licht should have traded him before the deadline last year. But he was delusional thinking this team was going to make a run. You can take that 10 mil and add a Honey Badger, or a CJ Mosley, which would have a much bigger impact on this team.

  22. newsandwich Says:

    @Joe

    “destroyed a Christmas display”

    WTF?!

  23. PoundTheRock Says:

    He has to go!

I said when Bucs signed he would be a problem. He is a Diva! Those types of players win nothing, because it is all about them.

I don’t care if they can trade him or not. Get rid of his 10M and bring in a team player who wants the team to win. Chris Godwin should start opposite ME13 anyway.

  24. Bojim Says:

Trade him for two 7th rounders in 2020.

  25. Adrnagy Says:

Hump is gone , we keep djax and run a bunch of slants and screens to him in the slot plus he can take it all the way. Hump was getting to many passes. We just need a good RB and The o line to pound the rock. Our o line soft except Jensen and Marpet.

  26. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Thanks Altered-Funny Stuff. What is also very funny is how people think Renfrow will step in on day 1 and replace Adam Humphries-Bwahahahaha. Hump is in the prime of his career and will be for 5 more years , while Renfrow is a Rook. While a quick glance at comparables might indicate they are similar , Hump is much stronger. Trade Mesean and keep Hump.

  27. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    Buh–Bye.

  28. Defense Rules Says:

RustyRhinos nailed it … “The Bucs hold the ax”. Reality is painful … DJax is valuable to us, he’s a pain in the butt, AND we can’t afford his $10 mil pricetag. Therein lies the bottom line; he’s a goner. However, expecting any other team to give us a draft pick for him AND pick up his $10 mil salary is really wishful thinking.

Bucs best option is to do an even trade with ‘someone’ … DJax for a player who we NEED. Doesn’t have to be an equivalent player, just someone who can help the Bucs. Personal preference would be for a running back with a reasonable salary & at least 2 years left on his contract (preferably more). For instance (just as an example), I’d be perfectly willing to send DJax to Cleveland for Duke Johnson … even steven. We gain a RB that we NEED and free up about $8 mil salary Cap (which we can use to add a veteran starting outside CB?). It’d be a win-win for both teams.

  29. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Adrnagy, have you must not be paying attention! What makes you think DJax will ever be willing to run slants next year. He doesn’t even like to practice hard, doesn’t fight for balls, and refused to return punts. He is referred to as MeSean for a reason. That dude ain’t going to be running slants and giving up his body to make plays.

  30. geno711 Says:

I like defense rules suggestion. Dorsey takes chances on high talent level guys. They have a lot of cap space. Duke Johnson money would work here and clearly seems like he would be an upgrade. Would rather have him than a 4th, 5th or later pick. If it could happen, I would 2nd Defense Rules game plan.

  31. MarkV Says:

The Bucs can decide whether to keep him or release him, but they don’t hold the hammer. When it comes to a trade, all he has to do is tell the interested team that he won’t show up if they trade for him, and the trade will be off. Knowing he won’t be returning to the Bucs (I think we all know he ain’t coming back), whatever team he is willing to pay for will simply wait until he is released. I think we all also know tampering really does exist, and he or his agent has already had those conversations with the Rams…or some other squad.

  32. Alanbucsfan Says:

Jackson led the team in yards per catch and will be playing for a new contract-
Arians will get the explosive production out of him and Joe will get angrier

  33. Big Daddy 58 Says:

Very seldom do you see a team with primadonna types on it winning the championship.
Team cohesion is so important in any team sport, its what makes the difference of the almost winners from the champions.
Desean doesnt want to put a lid on that ego .I say lets move on!

  34. BucEmUp 7 Says:

Talent means nothing when effort isnt there

  35. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

Newsandwich I want to know about this Christmas display too. It’s the second time I’ve seen Joe mention it

  36. Jdizzle Says:

DJax to CIN for John Ross. Cin is looking to trade him. Can add a pick swap in 2020 as well. Evans, Godwin and Ross in the slot

  37. Rod Munch Says:

The biggest concern I would have is if they are letting Hump walk, which is OK with me, but then dump D-Jax, that would be really dumb. At that point Bobo is your #3 WR, and while I like Bobo and think he’s a great replacement for Hump, I don’t want Hump as #3 either.

Anywho the entire point with Arians is that he’s supposed to be a guy who can get players to run through walls for him. Dirk meanwhile was a goof who no one respected. If Arians thinks he can get D-Jax on board, then that’s literally why he was brought here, why people were excited about him, that we’d have a proven coach who players would listen to and who he could talk to.

Maybe it goes wrong, maybe D-Jax is the same guy, in which case you release him in the preseason when he has no chance at getting big money. That is of course assuming his contract doesn’t guarantee the salary at an earlier point.
