Markus Golden, Alex Okafor Gone

March 15th, 2019

Signed.

UPDATED 2:18 a.m. – One free agent sleeper the Bucs could have gotten from the discount bin is no longer available.

Last night the Giants signed former Cardinals defensive end Markus Golden.

So just on paper, it seems the Bucs (in March) are hoping that Carl Nassib repeats or improves on his career year last season, and the Bucs get help pressuring the quarterback from linebacker Noah Spence.

The only edge rushers left worth a darn, per Andy Benoit of SI.com, are Ziggy Ansah (inconsistent), Justin Houston (toast) and Vinny Curry (been there, done that).

But boys and girls, this is what happens when a team has maxed out the salary cap.

Frankly, Joe doesn’t expect the Bucs to sign anyone that will motivate a Bucs fan to run to Hooters to chug a beer.

Ansah has visits planned with the Saints and Bills, per various reports. New Orleans lost 16-game starting DE Alex Okafor, a guy Bruce Arians once called a future double-digit sackmaster when he coached him in Arizona, to a fat contract with the Chiefs.

That’s ok, Bucco Bruce has his magic wand.

  2. Waterboy Says:

Based on the on field production it’s hard to understand how the Bucs have a maxed out salary cap. Evans is the only player on that team that would be tough to replace.

  3. Adrnagy Says:

    We have jpp 👌🏼

  4. Kyle Says:

how jason licht kept his job is beyond me.. This guy is way over his head, look at yzerman with the bolts and what he does/did. licht is a clown in comparison. How many losing gm’s get to hire 3 coaches? The glazers fkd up keeping this guy. I dont care about BA, jason licht isnt paying his salary. Glazers could of hired him anyways, we dont know. Until they get a competent behind the scenes guy who can run this franchise, we are fkd. BA can only do so much, he has to coach..

  5. Adrnagy Says:

It’s not a GM. It’s a culture. It’s hard to turn a franchise around dungy did it. Don’t you remember. Donkey in Cleveland is trying but will fail. It’s the coach. Koetter in his first year here had the right culture but then he went over his head. Coach/players.

  6. Not there yet Says:

After all the hype and two back to back 5-11 seasons with this roster I’m sorry but what defensive player do you think this team can to come here unless it’s about money? It’s about money and the losing culture and who really wants to be apart of that. BA is smart enough to know he needs to win games to attract free agents and it doesn’t have to be every player a coach is familiar with unless you feel like Bernard reedy and Freddie Martino worked out well. Wasn’t to hype about jackass Rodgers either.

Did BA go to Arizona and sign a gang of colts players? I don’t remember any key free agent coming there to put him over the hump.

  7. Joe Says:

    Kyle;

Licht hasn’t hired three coaches. And without Licht, there is no Bucco Bruce Arians.

  8. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Markus Golden who?

  9. Jean Lafitte Says:

Bring in the African born Ansah. I bet he would thrive in our climate. It’s too cold in Detroit.

  10. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

There’s still the draft and post draft cuts. Someone reported the Bucs were interested in Golden so that tells you they aren’t thinking status quo. They are in fact interested in finding another edge rusher. I feel like we are about to land Quinnen Williams.
If you are reading this Licht, I said Quinnen Williams not Greedy Williams. We don’t want the Chris Rock looking MF, we want the giant a$$ dude with the face of a 14 year old.

  11. Jean Lafitte Says:

Report: Saints to meet with former Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah <— just found this little nugget. Looks like NOLA going to beat us to it. …figures

  12. Mike Says:

Just how toasted is he Joe? I’ll take some relatively recent all pro elite level toast over these scrubs we try to hope and pray they reach their potential or worse yet, their hype.

  13. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Sign Ziggy to a prove it contract. A combo of JPP, Nassib, Ziggy, and possibly a drafted guy as well, will give us a good group of guys who can get after the QB. Ziggy will have a good year barring injury, big if I know, but the talent is there. Our new staff could work wonders for that guy.

All I know is we have a chance at getting a dominant player at #5 or we can trade down and add some extra picks. I also would take a flyer on Eric Berry. Just his leadership alone would be worth bringing him in. But again he would be the perfect low risk high reward player, just like Ziggy.

  14. Bucs Guy Says:

Bruce irvin – DE. Sign him and cut Gholston. Same money, no change to the cap. Irvin had 6 sacks last year. Not huge numbers, but definitely an upgrade as a backup DE.

  15. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

    Suh?

  16. Not there yet Says:

Alex okafer? Lol we didn’t need another wil Gholston on the team, we need actual real pass rushers

  17. richbucsfan Says:

I agree Licht is incompetent; however, if he is fired, who would you get to take this dumpster fire of a job/team?
On another subject, having one player re-work his contract was good and opened a few dollars. Where is GMC? His contract is HUGE.

  18. Figures Says:

Gonna be a long terrible year.

This franchise is a joke on every level.

At this point I just laugh and see how bad it can get lol.

  19. 1sparkybuc Says:

I believe the new improved coaching staff is good for a 10-6 record in 2019. Screw the whiny bitching trolls that infest every Buccaneer site like cockroaches in a palm tree. GO BUCS

  20. BucEmUp 7 Says:

Cant sack the qb when your playing 15byard cushions every game. Hard to score tds when your running the same 7 plays every game. Hard to tun the ball when your 15 yard cushion defense is giving up 30 points in 30 minutes of play.

Fans will soon realise that bad teams are not that far from being good teams. All of these problems can be fixed with better teaching and planning. IT AINT ROCKET SCIENCE!!!

As for free agents, I really do think crowell, duke johnson or anderson would be great value signings. Arians and licht will kill it this draft.

  21. Figures Says:

    10-6

Lmao hahahaha hahahaha hahahaha now that’s some great humor on a Friday morning.

    Lmao. Wow. 10-6 lol.

That’s why you’re so let down every year.

  22. HolyBuc Says:

Bucs need to sign Shaq Barrett he is Von Miller’s back up and has been stuck behind two first round picks 9on the other side. Shouldn’t cost a lot and can play in a 3-4.

  23. TDTB Says:

Is it possible re-negotiations with GMC aren’t going well, so Licht is waiting to cut/deal him? If Bucs cut and there’s no market they could re-sign cheap. If there is a market they could trade instead of cut and get a decent draft pick. If you look at the salaries up and down the roster they aren’t that bad at the top. The problem is the team has a butt load of average to below average players being overpaid. Looking at the salaries, Allen, Dotson, Gholston and Brate are the ones glaringly over paid for production. Jensen is slightly out of whack as well, but at least he’s a productive starter. Stewart and Ronald Jones are over paid too, but they’re newbies. If Bucs draft or sign a decent RB, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jones was cut…but it would be after June 1st because it would be half the dead cap hit. Hate to say it but JPP could be cut/traded during camp if they sign a DE. Of the big salaried players on the team his would be an attractive cut financially because it doesn’t look like it would result in dead cap space.

  24. Jamaal Stanley Says:

DE isn’t the premium area of defense anymore the secondary is in today’s. It’s why the chiefs allow Houston and Ford out the building and pay the Honeybadger 14 mill annually. It’s why Belichess allows okay pass rushers to leave seemingly every other off season to walk but those McCourty brothers,Chung and Gilmore stay cemented like stone. Y’all ideals about defense are a thing of the past, rushers are no longer thought of as the most important pieces.

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

Whoa! Who said 10-6?! It’s 16-DASH-ZERO my friends!

Yes, I said it! AND no, I’m not drinking…….YET!

  26. Grt1 Says:

We’ll be fine I believe that the draft will tell us a lot. If we land one of the big 3 Bosa,Williams or Allen. Mark my words GMC is gone and we sign and trade for a stud Olinemen. If we don’t land a one of the big 3 . GMC restructures and we sign a guy before camp.

  27. TheCollegeBuc Says:

Is Justin Houston really not an option for this team…? Maybe I got our line confused with The Chiefs… last time I checked, we take those players. But Licht is an idiot. 6-10 record too good for us seems like Licht wants to set a franchise low for GM win percentage.
Prediction: 3-13 second coming of Lovie. Overpaying average players at 5-11 it’s over. Rebuild coming soon.

  28. donuts Says:

I have been very critical of the Bucs the past few days. This tells us their cap problem is very real and that BA thinks the coaching was the big problem last year and that he can turn a few turds into new shiny NFL players. They need to add to the trenches where the game is won. I expect them to add one player that wont be in Buc camp to their trenchman on either side of the ball (RG) after the final training camp cuts.

GMC. They/Licht are mismanaging this situation to date. He needs to take a pay cut. His production does not match his $$ for more than 1 season. Many good players take cuts including Tom Brady to help the team that is cap strapped. He has made generational money from the Bucs….but we now live in a me world. There is still time to fix this but its obvious from a biz perspective that once Winston gets his 20+ that this will be on the table.

  29. joestang Says:

hard to watch a team that was on the verge of being a playoff contender go to being one of the worst teams in the NFL. It starts with a horrible GM that can’t make a right move to help team, we are getting worse not better. Dont put much stock in the draft because Licht will screw it up. I see Ariens back in the booth after 2 years.

  30. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Adrnagy-
    You are correct
Koetter ‘s mistake was placing loyalty to his assistants over winning
OLine coach, RB coach, Secondary coaches, Special teams coaches – all garbage-
Do any of them have NFL jobs now?

  31. TOM Says:

I said all along the Bucs should consider Barrett along with Jamie Collins & DT Brent Urban & Pennel. Trade or cut McCoy & Gholston.

  32. D-Rome Says:

So just on paper, it seems the Bucs (in March) are hoping that Carl Nassib repeats or improves on his career year last season, and the Bucs get help pressuring the quarterback from linebacker Noah Spence.

Reminds me of that time when the Bucs let go of Michael Bennett because they were hoping Da’Quon Bowers was going to be a 10 sack guy.

  33. yahoo Says:

are my season tkts are waste of cash with Light still as bucs gm? A losing team and no cash ..WHY???

  34. Brandon Says:

    How is Justin Houston toast?

  35. K_bassuka Says:

Joe stop crying over FA pass rushers. Not that many sign with a different team and make that big of an impact anyway. There’s a reason why they become available. Dee Ford it’s not a DE and the lack of player movement on our defense indicates we are gonna run a 4-3. So why in the world should we trade a 2d for a player that it’s only good at doing one thing?
