Bucs Sign… A Receiver?

March 12th, 2019

New Bucs receiver.

Even with the jettisoning of malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson and fellow receiver Adam Humphries going to greener pastures in Tennessee, it seemed the Bucs were still fairly good at receiver with what was left over.

Joe was wrong.

Per Adam Schefter of BSPN, the Bucs signed former Browns receiver Breshad Perriman. Per Schefter, the Browns had a verbal agreement to bring Perriman back but that was tossed aside when the Browns traded for Odell Beckham Tuesday night.

So is Perriman just backup fodder? Is he a safety net in case Chris Godwin can’t take the next step in his development as the heir apparent No. 2 receiver? All questions we will find out come training camp.

Now, as far as the Bucs not getting a stud defensive end with a second round pick, Joe will address that at midnight.

As for Perriman, he’s been a borderline bust. A 26th overall pick by the Ravens in the 2015 draft out of Central Florida, Perriman has but five touchdowns to his name. Perriman is best known for being injury-prone and dropping passes.

Man… he ran the 40yd at 4.19 ? With Bruce offense and the boys ..!

  2. CharlieB Says:

Perriman is a salvage operation for BA to give us a chance at a deep threat on the cheap. Good chance he beats out Watson for the 3rd WR position.

  3. Joe Says:

Perriman is a salvage operation for BA

LOL While that’s funny, it is also accurate.

  4. Easy Says:

Lol he won’t make any impact

  5. SteelStudBuc Says:

Nice move on the cheap. Hope he fits in. Guy was really hyped up before…

  6. Tom S. Says:

One of my favorite lines was from John Harbaugh “it’s probably one of the all-time slowest healing sprained PCLs ever.”

    https://web.archive.org/web/20171027055701/http://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/article-1/Breshad-Perriman-Placed-On-Injured-Reserve/46b36cdb-3ab6-4748-8a26-f4949c23ddb9

This guy sprains his PCL first day of TC and misses his entire rookie year. Comes back, plays some decent football in year 2 and in year 3 he’s invisible then after a cup of coffee in DC he plays OK for the Browns.

Purely a flyer on a height/speed guy with some legitimate question marks.

  7. Season Is Over Says:

Seems like a win all around. He has had great success at all stops. Teams always let their first round pick leave after just two years. Most players are on their fourth team within their first five years. Great signing.

  8. Jimmy Says:

“Perriman is best known for being injury-prone and dropping passes.”

So the opposite of Hump. Great.

  9. Adrnagy Says:

    🤔 who gets cut.

  10. Blackmagic00 Says:

And seems a browns 1st round bust is pretty much a good Buc. Maybe we can find a way to sign all their 1st round busts?

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Perriman is a pure lottery ticket, and compared to Funcess getting $13m, it’s a bargain. Heck signing me for $1.5m is a bargain by that standard.

Anywho we shall see what happens and what his deal is. His speed says he is your deep threat to get guys open underneath, so this might help Bobo the way that D-Jax opened up underneath for Hump. Then again teams actually respected D-Jax’s speed and had to pay attention to him, based on Perriman’s career so far they might just not cover him at all and figure he’ll drop anything that comes his direction.

Low risk signing, shouldn’t affect the comp pick formula, I like it.

  12. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Hey maybe being back in Florida will up his game like when he played at UCF. Anywho still surprised to sign a WR. Where is the defensive help? Go Bucs!

  13. Blackmagic00 Says:

Didn’t realize he was drafted by someone else

  14. BrianBucs Says:

Can he play guard or rush the passer?

  15. Rod Munch Says:

Adrnagy – Bucs just lost two WRs… they added one…

    Lets see… You have two… then you minus… Wait… You have 5 then you add tw… wait… You have… Wait…

    Damn, I don’t know, that’s a tough one.

  16. Jeffbuc Says:

Dude is a burner teams still have to respect him deep and shade a safety to his side. It’s a win win got rid of 19 million worth of receivers and got an even faster former first round pick for 4 million. He started coming to his own with the Browns towards the end of the year. Hopefully he is a late bloomer. Wish he could return punts and kick returns. But with a great coach and his speeds might see some end arounds and just get the ball with his elite speed in his hands. And he might like being back in central Florida.

  17. adam from ny Says:

if he ran a 4.19, there u have it…he’s your stretch the field guy

  18. Timbo Says:

Joe must didnt get the memo. Bucco Bruce would like to have as much speed as possible. With the Jettison of Djax, im thinking the fastest receiver left was Chris Godwin.

  19. Bucafan951 Says:

^umm that would be a ravens first rd bust

  20. Bird Says:

    Yah.

From Orlando and went to ucf so Very familiar with him.

He can’t stay healthy. It’s one of those risk it no biscuit moves I guess by arians /Licht. low investment looking for bigger return. He was fast at one point. Not sure how fast his 40 time is now after all his injuries. At least he is back in warm weather. Maybe he just needs the Florida sun and change of scenery

    Just meh …ehh

  21. Joe Says:

Joe must didnt get the memo. Bucco Bruce would like to have as much speed as possible.

Strange. Joe got the memo this was why Humphries was not brought back. Perhaps you are referring to a memo about income taxes?

  22. Ndog Says:

Ah I see we are back to NegativeBucsFan.com

  23. Bird Says:

He is a bigger speed guy /bigger target …so good for Jameis.

    6’2. 215 lbs.
    ran 4.25 /4.28 a few years ago.

  24. Adrnagy Says:

@rod munch …. it’s a domino effect like Jason Licht said. Someone is going to get release.

All we need is lindstrom in the 2round.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

Bird – Watching his highlights from last year he’s just running by guys, he doesn’t look fast as in the way D-Jax looked fast, but he’s running by everyone. That tells me he still has his speed, even if it’s not 4.19.

But $4m, in this insane FA market, is like $1.5m in any other year.

  26. Jeffbuc Says:

Joe we resigned Cairo Santos looks like he’s are kicker for 2019.

  27. Bird Says:

Odell Beckham jr already asking for his contract to be restructured by browns

He just signed his contract last year August.
There is another diva for yah. I Think he is slightly crazy with watching his sideline antics.
Geesh. The new headache of the Cleveland browns.

Say what you want about mike Evans whether is top 5 or top 3.
I’m just glad he is a buc. Putting up historic numbers to date. Pretty drama free and great off the field as well

  28. Mike Evans Goat Says:

This site is toxic. WE DONT HAVE CAP SPACE!!!! Every1 (including Joes) on here acting like cry babies cuz we aren’t MASSIVELY overpaying every Joe shmo out here. Smh. We can clear cap space, BUT WE ALSO HAVE TO SIGN PLAYERS TO REPLACE SAID CUT PLAYERS! How can u b so thick

  29. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    Jeffbuc Says:
“Joe we resigned Cairo Santos looks like he’s are kicker for 2019.”

Well that locks down the Brazil market. We may get to see TV commercials for flan and the Miss Bum Bum pageant!

  30. cmurda Says:

B.A. is betting on himself as a coach taking on an absolute speed demon who lacks polish. B.A is confident that he can coach Perriman up to be a deep threat that defenses have to respect. I don’t know that he locks in the #3 role though. I see that as an open competition with Watson having his opportunity to win the job.

  31. Jamaal Stanley Says:

GOAT this rocked country don’t waste your time bro. He’ll catch 70 yarder week 1 and they’ll all be lined up on his n<~s@-.

  32. ncbucsfan Says:

@ Ndog and Mike Evans Goat: Yes, the negativity on here is sickening sometimes.

  33. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

Is Johnny Foosball our next signing to be backup QB?

… just going with the theme of former Brown 1st Rd castoffs…

  34. Mike Evans Goat Says:

Who is the other browns first round castoff?

  35. Mike Evans Goat Says:

As far as I know we don’t have ANY former browns 1st round castoff

  36. Kyle Says:

4 million for a backup wr and we cant find enough money for a starting linebacker? flerking disaster

  37. Mike Evans Goat Says:

Erick Henson: Insurts foot into mouth

Please think b4 u spew negative bull $hit

  38. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Kyle
Our LBer will come they the draft
And maybe if u didn’t notice, all starting LBers are getting absolutely inside contracts at the moment.

  39. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    *insane ^^^^

  40. catcard202 Says:

For about 1.5sec I was ecstatic…Thinking to myself…BUCS STOLE ONE @ $4m!!! Then I realized that it was bust 1st round WR Breshad Perriman & not beast CB coming off injury – Bashaud Breeland.

  41. Mike Johnson Says:

More mediocrity for our Bucs. A 1st rd Bust for 4 mil?
    Come on man!!

  42. Owlykat Says:

The reason the Ravens let Perriman go is he was inconsistent in his cuts and catching passes. But when speedster Dontae Dye was with the Bucs he had the same problems but Dye has been developed by Spurrier with the Apollos and has caught two touchdown passes after outrunning the defense. You will remember that Evans had problems dropping passes several years ago and our WR Coach developed him into a great pass receiver. BA will develop Perriman and I bet he also will lay out for passes and break them up if they are about to be intercepted unlike Jackson and will be just what we needed to replace Jackson!

  43. Owlykat Says:

Just get a Veteran Cornerback next and we will be able to get the rest in Free Agency. I hope Cichy will be able to come back recovered from his injury and with White and Minter in the middle and Nassib and David on the outside we should be strong at LB with Cichy, Noah, and Bond in reserve we should be fine. Up front we will have GMC, Vea, and PFF as starters and we should get a young DE in the draft along with a rookie NT and one of our two DEs from our Practice Squad as our backups. I am hopeful Adams can be resigned. We also could find a DE from the Alliance of American Football too. Our addition of a Veteran LB who has also played Safety for BA should be used as the leader teaching our Safeties the new system. Later in the year he could fill in at LB if there are injuries.

  44. Mike Evans Goat Says:

LVD will mist likely play Inside LBer mixed in with Devin White and Deon Buccannon

  45. Not there yet Says:

So is Perriman just backup fodder? Is he a safety net in case Chris Godwin can’t take the next step in his development as the heir apparent as a No. 2 receiver?

Wonder where the cynical nonsense you think is logic is coming from wayyy to much. Why on earth would Perriman be considered on Godwin level with this team before taking a single snap? Dude is fast but can’t catch number one and two Godwin is going to play in the slot like Larry Fitzgerald did. Three why would signing another receiver after losing hump signal so kind of doubt about Godwin. Big time drama queen sometimes and just because you think it don’t make it some valid point. Use your head it’s not hard to take a positive outlook

  46. Tony LA Says:

    Most negative fans in sports.
    Right here.

Would you all care for cheese to go with all your whine?

  47. Tony LA Says:

    Nice signing.
Prove it deal for a guy with tons of intangibles who knows it’s his last chance.
Pay attention everyone. Stop whining and open your ears.

Listen to what Bruce has said…
He wants people fearing for their jobs.
He wants everyone fighting for their survival.
Deone and Breshad both signed to one year prove it deals that fit that perfectly.
Watch how many 50 million dollar busts there will be from the signings today.
    Watch

The guys the Bucs signed aren’t hungry, they’re starving and know their NFL lives hang in the balance.

  48. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Great pick up IMO, he was one of the burners I liked to replace MeJax’s role of just run really fast. He costs less than half what John Brown got too. He will be a situational player and field stretcher.
I think Godwin is #2 and will move inside in 3WR sets. Then put Perriman on the outside to open up the defense. Basically the same thing Djax did minus being a little biotch.

  49. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

True that Tony, lots of manstrating going on in here.

  50. Tom S. Says:

Hmmm to Tony and Alaskan Snowman you’re right, 6 years into Licht’s rebuild this GM who has proven to be incompetent at every facet of roster construction is going to show the league that with no cap room and his top 5 pick on a middle linebacker from LSU to replace his previous MLB from LSU that the league is going to be astounded by the Bucs this year. It’s going to be incredible just how good things are going to be. Cairo Santos is going to nail 65 yard kicks with ease. Ryan Griffin is going to come into the game and be like Kurt Warner on steroids. Then MJ Stewart and Ryan Smith are going to show EVERYONE what Licht was talking about when he drafted them. Oh and did I mention Ronald Jones? No? That’s because even in this fantasy Ronald Jones still sucks. But hey no one’s perfect.

  51. tmaxcon Says:

When you have not won a single meaningful game in nearly two decades and are the proud owners of the worst winning percentage in pro sports there is nothing to be positive about.

Living in fantasyland and in complete denial of reality does not make you delusional optimists better fans. It just makes you entertaining…. nfl is a results based business and the on field results prove how pathetic this franchise is regardless of your happy pills and rose colored glasses

  52. richbucsfan Says:

The NFL is the only place where you can suck and yet make millions of dollars.

  53. Defense Rules Says:

This signing will make perfect sense when the media next interviews BA.

And I quote … “No risk it, no biscuit.” Unquote.

  54. Joeypoppems Says:

Dude cant catch. Dont gas up this signing lol

  55. BucEmUp 7 Says:

Whats funny is how everyone bkames Jason licht for his bad picks, when just about everyone gm has draft picks that dont pan out. All 32 teams. Bad coaching produces many of those “bad picks”

Cant wait for Arians to get his hands dirty with these guys. So far both free agents are former 1st round picks.

  56. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If Perriman can replace DeSean as the deep threat then he was well worth 4 mil. The kid ran a 4.25 during his Pro Day.

  57. Stanglassman Says:

The Giants/Browns blockbuster trade not only benefits the Bucs by getting Wr Perrimen it also shakes up the top of the draft. The likelihood that one of the big three DL guys falling to the Bucs at 5 just got much better today.

  58. OneBuc55 Says:

    Remember Antonio Bryant…

When everyone thought he was done we got a few good years out of him… Hopefully Perriman can revive his career here in Tampa…he’s from Orlando so maybe being back close to home/support system will help his game…Now the injuries, that’s another can of worms…

  59. Bucsfanman Says:

The sky is falling, the sky is falling! We signed a former 1st rd pick for speed and depth. The sky is falling!

  60. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Licht sucks!

  61. Tval Says:

You don’t handcuff yourself by saying “Godwin won’t or will play in the slot”. It makes it TOO easy for defenses to scheme against and line up THEIR best vs YOUR best. you keep guys moving around to get your #1 vs #3 corner mismatch. Bruce will have Mike in the slot to see if a d coordinator has a stupid philosophy of keeping his best corners on the boundary. It’s how AZ beat philly to get to the Super Bowl with Fitz Mcnabbs last run. Killed their Nickel in his prime as a #1 wr

  62. admin Says:

“Godwin won’t or will play in the slot”

He can play slot. And be a No. 2. He’s versatile.

  63. Bucsdelight Says:

    Kick returner?

  64. Issaic haggins Says:

    Yep

  65. Issaic haggins Says:

Not surprised one bit at the signing , would hv preferred Patterson who is playing the best ball of his career by far !!!

Anyone surprised by this is not an honest objective Bucs fan !!!
