Bucs Miss Rare Opportunity

March 13th, 2019

#ItsABucsLife

Joe doesn’t know who is the culprit making the gravest of mistakes here, the Chiefs or the Bucs.

It was all laid out there for the taking. The Bucs had it in their power to pull the trigger on a deal that would have caused a domino effect in which the Bucs would have had an absolutely dominant defensive line. These opportunities come around maybe once a decade.

The Chiefs last night traded one of the premier pass rushers in the game, Dee Ford, to John Lynch (who just shook the cobwebs out of his head from signing Kwon Alexander to that crazy contract) and the 49ers for a second-round pick.

A second round pick!

First, what is wrong with Chiefs owner Clark Hunt? What possessed him to allow his general manager, Brett Veach, to lose his damn mind?

And why exactly did Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht turn his nose up on such a deal? Yes, the Bucs have Jason Pierre-Paul and Joe loves him, and it was a robbery what Licht pulled off on the Giants last year for just a third-round pick. But grabbing Ford would have set the table for the Bucs to have a dominant defensive line for years to come.

But, nah, Bucs are good. Will Gholston will save the day.

Just think of it, for the price of an Austin Seferian-Jackass, a Roberto Aguayo, a Ronald Jones or M.J. Stewart, the Bucs could have had one of the top pass rushers in the NFL!

What is Joe missing here?

Joe had pined for weeks, if the Chiefs were dumb enough to let Ford go via free agency, the Bucs should jump all over Ford. Instead, the Chiefs franchised him, then turned around and offered him up in a trade. Unbelievable!

With Ford, the Bucs could have drafted a defensive tackle at No. 5. You know, someone like this freak Ed Oliver from Houston.

Yes, Joe knows getting Ford would mean the end of Gerald McCoy. It’s well-documented on this very site what Joe thinks of GMC, but you have to ask yourself, who is better, a 31-year old GMC or a 28-year old Ford (he turns 28 next week)?

Just think what could have been: JPP, Oliver, Vita Vea and Ford. Holy Crushed Quarterbacks, Batman!

But no! Joe guesses the Bucs are good. You know, because… because… because… Carl Nassib.

Why does Joe have the nauseous feeling the Bucs are going to draft an inside linebacker at No. 5, or God forbid a(nother) corner?

Joe needs a friggin’ drink, man.

You know right now at this point. Itd be an honor to be called Cleveland south. I like some of the non moves made. But they have not made enough moves yet. Although there have been lots of unreasonable contracts going down. We need som players dammit!!

  2. BucsBandit Says:

They’re going to trade down with a QB-hungry team looking to jump the Giants and the Bucs will draft a CORNER.

    100% GUARANTEED.

  3. CharlieB Says:

I’m way ahead of you on the drink. Giving up a 2nd round pick under Licht is giving away dead weight anyway. I just don’t think they wanted to pay him that much.

  4. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

You didn’t mention the pricey contract that needed to be hammered out prior to the trade. A good pass rusher is no doubt needed…I agree.

  5. adam from ny Says:

seems they are comfortable holding their secure position at the bottom of the nfc south…i don’t get it…

  6. Capt Kidd Says:

Bucs don’t need Ford’s salary on their cap right now. Better off spreading the wealth to other positions.

  7. ManzielMadness Says:

Agree… the way to build a team starts with the trenches.. missed out on a great opportunity.. hopefully we have an answer but somehow I doubt it.

  8. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

What would we pay him with? Sideline towels and athletic tape!

  9. bucfan999 Says:

Joe needs to stop playing fantasy football here. Sure a 2nd rounder for Dee Ford is cheap but in no way could we have paid what the 49ers are going to pay him on his new contract. 5 Year 87.5 Million with 45 Million Guaranteed. That comes to an average of 17,500,000 per year.
I agree we should sign LeVeon Bell, Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, C.J. Mosely & DeMarcus Lawrence but we simply don’t have the money and when Joe is on here advocating signing high priced free agents this year simply makes no sense and makes Joe look like he’s starting to lose it a little.

  10. Sloppy Joe Says:

Calm down Joe! I’ve been coming to this website since you first started and I’ve never seen you guys feed the negativity of Bucs fans like this. Technically it wouldn’t have taken our 2nd round pick because SF pick is 3 higher than ours. It would have taken our 2 plus another pick. Also for a cap crunched team how could we pay 17.5 mil to a D end especially when our other D end makes 14.5 this year. I think everyone is so beet down by more than a decade of loosing, I have seen so much hate by fans. Trust in BA at least for his first year; that he can take the players we have and make a winner.

  11. Lamarcus Says:

Why would anyone expect this team to make a “splash” play in the free agency period. Licht says we are good and proves it every time. The Collins/Johnson deals have spooked him

Josh Allen drops to 5 to the Bucs and if he is gone Devin White.

  12. Gavin Says:

Maybe the ones making millions, the coach who came out of retirement know what they are doing and sticking to a plan. We can all have our opinion on what we would do to better this team but our opinions dont matter. Not til our name comes after GM or Coach. Maybe having a dominant defensive line is not number 1 priority for the ones running this team. Maybe a stout LB core is. No one knows what this defense will look like.

  13. BrianBucs Says:

    Jason Gump Strikes Again!

  14. Joe Says:

I just don’t think they wanted to pay him that much.

    Probably right.

Sure a 2nd rounder for Dee Ford is cheap but in no way could we have paid what the 49ers are going to pay him on his new contract. 5 Year 87.5 Million with 45 Million Guaranteed. That comes to an average of 17,500,000 per year.

Joe’s not a math major and he found expendable salaries that could be cut to make room. It’s really not difficult at all. Go to Spotrac.com and look at each Bucs’ players’ salary for 2019.

    Not difficult at all.

  15. Ndog Says:

So let me get this straight Joe, you’re pissed we didn’t trade a 2nd round pick and pay a whole boat load of salary cap room for a guy that couldn’t line up on sides for the biggest play of his life and costed his teams a birth in the Super Bowl?

  16. Deez Bucs Says:

Maybe we didn’t mess around with Dee Ford because his salary was already $15m for next year and he wants a new deal?

Are we all following the same offseason here? Some of you guys are delusional about our cap situation.

$21m this year to a QB this fanbase can’t even agree on tells you all you need to know about this offseason. The fact that we can’t extend or let Winston walk until after the end of the season is holding this team hostage in free agency.

  17. Adrnagy Says:

If you put it that way joe I guess. But if ford is that good ,and 28 why do the chiefs let him go ??

  18. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    That’s not a pirate! That’s a Confederate cavalry uniform!

  19. Bucfan1988 Says:

I wonder if we have any interest in Eric Berry from KC??
With signing of the Honey Badger, they will try & trade or release him…
    I’m curious on this one…

  20. Joe Says:

    That’s not a pirate! That’s a Confederate cavalry uniform!

    It’s neither!

  21. Adrnagy Says:

    Ted Larsen ?

  22. Patrickbucs Says:

Same dude that bailed out Brady and the Pats correct after the pick? Again when the Pats sign these big deals outside of a corner please lmk.

  23. cmurda Says:

Rare opportunity? Pffft. Did you forget about the Cairo Santos signing? Cairo freaking Santos baby.

  24. Lamarcus Says:

Probably feel like our guys in house who they have paid already need to make the plays.

  25. Waterboy Says:

SF has the #4 pick in the 2nd round, the Bucs have the #7 pick. I’d imagine they would have required more from the Bucs than just their 2nd if they already had a higher pick on the table from SF.

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

It Could be worst. Easy money Sweezy is signing with the AZ Cardinals!

  27. Waterboy Says:

    Agree with Sloppy Joe!

Has Dee Ford been consistently good throughout his career or just 1 good season and a big payday?

  28. Gary Says:

Le’Veon Bell to the Jets. This team settles for below average players lol

  29. PriMech54 Says:

I’m just trying to figure out what this infatuation is that Joe has with Ed Oliver.

An undersized tackle that struggles in downhill run gaps and plays “too heavy” when he bulks up to even 290 is a straight REACH if you’re talking 5th overall pick

As for Dee Ford and the Bucs, wait for it……… we’re broke. And we’re already paying JPP less than what Ford just inked for, for relatively the same production. Plenty of holes still on the roster that trump pass rusher at this time.

  30. Sloppy Joe Says:

Call me naive but I believe that our problems last year where not talent related. I don’t think BA at 67 would have come here if it was. I think he looked at our roster and said holy #@&$ I can win with that. I don’t think that this year needs to be about big splash players…look what that has gotten us in the past few years.

  31. Joe Says:

I’m just trying to figure out what this infatuation is that Joe has with Ed Oliver.

Uuumm… eeerrr… wwweell… he’s good. No need to wonder any longer.

  32. Not there yet Says:

Would have been good for years to come? He’s 28 so more like 2-3 years and he is not as dominant as you keep making him out to be. Since 2014 he’s had two count two good season, 10 sack season in 2016 and the 13 sack season this year which from the chiefs perspective probably has a lot to do with teams playing from behind. 1.5 sacks as a rookie, a 4 sack season and a 2 sack season, get that one amazing season out of your head especially since he’s the one with the boneheaded play that cost the city a Super bowl birth.

  33. Tom S. Says:

Sloppy Joe is quite the optimist. It’s almost like he’s been watching a never-ending replay of SuperBowl XXXVII the past 15 years. You’d almost think we don’t have the second longest playoff drought in the NFL to the Browns. The team that Vegas now has as the 3rd biggest favorite to win the AFC in 2019.

You really have to hand it to someone with that level of ignorance…I mean, optimism.

  34. Sloppy Joe Says:

Rather be an ignorant optimist than a pessimistic a$$…

  35. unbelievable Says:

Just think what could have been: JPP, Oliver, Vita Vea and Ford. Holy Crushed Quarterbacks, Batman!

Well, that sure sounds nice and all, but that would require an organization that actually makes the right moves.

That hasn’t been the Bucs for quite some time.

  36. SteelStudBuc Says:

This reminds me of a child crying at the supermarket when mommy doesn’t buy them the candy bar… eventually the kid gets over it tho… but mommy just got rid of Desean Jackson for you… so now u want everything.

  37. Kyle Says:

    we suck..period..

  38. Kyle Says:

    go yuckanners

  39. Tom S. Says:

Is being aware that the past two GM’s over the last 10 seasons have combined to average 5-11 seasons and no playoffs really pessimistic? Or that the team is cap strapped coming off the last 5-11 season where the top overall pick in 2015 and franchise QB was suspended for his second sexual assault allegation/lying to the NFL for 4 games? Is it pessimistic to be aware of that too Sloppy Joe?

Oh I’m sorry, I don’t mean to rain on the parade of Cairo Santos, Ryan Griffin or the Punter from the 49ers. Happy days are here again!

  40. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Ford is probably gonna be the highest paid LB, something like 18M/yr.
He is not Khalil Mack, he is not even top 5 pass rusher. We are in no position to overpay players whose impact won’t match their contract. We need some dang vets on this team and hit on our draft picks.

Coaching alone will have some of our “busts” playing much better. When Grimes did that podcast he talked about how wrong the coaches were teaching certain techniques and they would get pissed at him for doing what he knew worked. So when he did it their way he missed the plays and got made a fool of. This is an 11 year NFL vet and we could all see how poorly coached that defense was. The players were tuning out coaching across the board.

  41. westernbuc Says:

This is a good second round for defense. He probably wants to accumulate picks, not trade them

  42. I Bleed Pewter Says:

Are you kidding Joe? If the Bucs had gotten in on it, it would have cost us more.

  43. gotbbucs Says:

Hell fire and damnation….that’s what we preach around here.

I’m just trying to figure out what this infatuation is that Joe has with Ed Oliver.

“Uuumm… eeerrr… wwweell… he’s good. No need to wonder any longer.”

You just discovered him like 10 days ago at the combine when he was talking about bull semen at the podium.

  45. I Bleed Pewter Says:

    F-Troop

  46. Defense Rules Says:

@Alaskan … “The players were tuning out coaching across the board.” Ahhh yes, mutiny on the Bounty revisited. Can you see BA or Todd tolerating that kinda of BS? Not even for a second.

@Joe … “Why does Joe have the nauseous feeling the Bucs are going to draft an inside linebacker at No. 5 …?” OK Joe, so you’re not onboard with drafting Devin White at #5. We get it. Have another ‘friggin drink’ and embrace it. At the end of this year & for many years to come you’ll be incredibly grateful that you did.

Now when it comes to the second part … “or God forbid a(nother) corner) … NO ONE WOULD BE THAT STUPID. Not even Gump. Oh wait … we’re talking Gump aren’t we. Rats. Now I’m the one who needs a friggin drink.

  47. FairMinded Says:

Joe’s right. There were and are some expendable players on the roster who could have made room for a Dee Ford’s salary. Jettison the couple ex Eagles and Gholston. Or hell McCoy might have worked in a straight up trade with them for all we know. But hey let’s see who else we sign to a one year deal 🙄

  48. TDTB Says:

I agree that it would have cost more draft capital and an untenable salary for the Bucs to sign Ford. Silver lining is that the 49’rs probably won’t be using their 1st round pick on LB…which increases the odds of one dropping to the Bucs.

  49. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Did you see his contract? That’s why we passed what don’t you get?

  50. Bird Says:

    I think it’s 2020 2nd round pick too?

But yah. It was about the money 17-18 mil per year

  51. Bucsfanman Says:

unbelievable- Well said sir! The sitting GM has squandered more draft capital than PacMan Jones at the Mons! Throw in FA, he’s been playing with house money.

  52. BucEmUp 7 Says:

Nassib played part time for 15 ganes. We currently have two double digit sacks guys with he and jpp. Vea is going to be a monster..Not worrried Bowles with let the wolves hunt.and eat the sheep this season!!!

  53. Donuts Says:

I am with Joe on this one. Dee Ford is a rare talent. The price was low and we should have been a player. I am starting to think that the Bucs are watching what the Rays are doing and trying to do an NFL version of it. They should have shed GMC for Ford IMHO.

  54. Sloppy Joe Says:

Tom S calm down big guy! You could always pick a new team to root for… I think it will help your stress level…Maybe go with the Rams… I think you will be happier Lol. By the way you sound like a really fun guy to hang out with!

  55. Arian Nation Says:

This is the best thing that could happen in the J Allen sweepstake.

    He’s 1 step closer now.

  56. Maddognavy Says:

Unfortunately I think the Bucs are taking the young man from LSU, Oliver would be my choice though. I guess we’re supposed to sit back and “trust” the process. We all see how that has worked over the years

  57. Loyaltotheend Says:

Joe has been covering the nfl for how long? Yet still doesn’t understand the salary cap

49ers traded then extended him Bucs couldn’t do that

And when does averaging 6 sacks a year consider you a premier defensive linemen?

  58. AlteredEgo Says:

    Love it !
    #ItsABucsLife

  59. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

The bucs and the management have destroyed this team and destroyed the moniker of “Cleveland South” we are no longer in their ball park, again the bucs are alone as one of the top 2 worst teams in the NFL along with the G men and they will rebound quicker than this group down here. Bucs should have grabbed Dee Ford, could have released GMC, could have done a zillion things in past 5 years that have not been done or done poorly that has made this franchise at the bottom of the barrel in the NFL

  60. The Buc Realist Says:

So much for the year long of articles that the “real” fans had to suffer thru of ” licht did his job” from the past year!!!!!!!!!!! Finally joe and the sheep will are starting to admit the truth!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  61. BringBucsBack Says:

    1) $
    2) D-Strong draft

  62. Bucsdelight Says:

Whose to say that the Bucs don’t draft Oliver? Just because they didn’t get Ford, doesn’t mean they won’t.

  63. Issaic haggins Says:

Cut McCoy and it’s 4 mil more ,, Joe You Correct !!! There will be some other options that pop up and I’m not sure if D Fowler has signed ? I wasn’t a fan out of Fl but he looks like with the Rams his game has evolved and he may want to be serious about using his talents !!! There are other very good options you just have to commit every day to making it happen . Licht is committed to reading about HIMSELF and most of the articles are in his HEAD !!! Written by HIMSELF !!!

Licht you hAd everything for years , low salaried qb, talented players, top 5 cap room, open check book and man do you have yourself in a pickle !!! Pop Pa Bruce come save me arsssss !!! Dee Ford vs any of your Second Round Picks , Come On Man ……. Stubborn, Dumb Jock Disease !!! Given the history , Joe your double spot on !!!

  64. Issaic haggins Says:

I did see Fowler resigned and it appears the Rams thought he played well also !!!

    My Bad My Bad !!

  65. TOM Says:

When in the hell are the Bucs going to get cap help by unloading a lot of dead weight? It seems like they always wait until the last minute to do things.

  66. Doctor_berto Says:

Ed Oliver or Sweat after trade back. Please no linebacker top of first round

  67. Rob Says:

    This piece is borderline silly…

Dee Ford is on a 5 year contract that pays $17.5m per year right now.

Why would the Bucs give up a second round pick for a guy they can’t afford to pay?

  68. Tattoodonny Says:

Don’t you thunk in order to get Dee Ford wouldn’t Tampa have 2 offer more then the 2nd? The San Fran 2nd is higher then the Bucs so why take less even if it’s just a few spots. I would have loved 2 have him.

  69. 813bucboi Says:

    i agree with joe…..

trade a 2nd and maybe a 6th to KC if we got into a bidding war, cut gholston, urein, allen and restructure GMC…..if he doesnt want to take less money, cut him…..

then still draft ed oliver since we know GMC would be out the door soon….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!

  70. ATrain Says:

Nope the BUCS have GMC he can play the holy line

Come on the Bucs hold on to these favorites
