Bucs May Have New RG

March 16th, 2019

Likes his former players.

The Bucs may be turning in to Arizona East.

Yet another ex-Cardinals, ex-Bruce Arians player inked a deal this evening with the Bucs. Guard Earl Watford is coming to Tampa Bay.

Watford may or may not be better than swinging saloon doors incumbent right guard Caleb Benenoch. The Bucs will be Watford’s fifth team in two years. At least Benenoch is able to stick with one team in that same time frame.

In Arians’ final season in Arizona, Watford started nine games.

He turns 29 in June and was a backup for the Browns last year. He also played right tackle for Arians in 2015, when he was the opening day starter. That was just an experiment, it seems, as Watford was back to guard the following season.

Can’t be any worse that Benenoch or Cappa.

  2. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

    At least….go Bucs.

  3. Bucsfan3 Says:

Cappa will get better with coaching and development. The dudes undersized and raw but give him a chance.

  4. Adrnagy Says:

Cappa is raw. Earl Watford gives competition and exp. that’s good. We shall see in camp.

  5. adam from ny Says:

    this is getting weird…

  6. Larry Says:

2 & 11 for 2 years in row and still have the salary cap problems the Bucs have is pathetic!!! This is a direct result of bad drafting and bad free agency signings. Difficult for any coach to overcome the bad choices of the GM. Look what Cleveland has done in just a short period of time. They should be legit contenders this year. Let’s all just hope Arians can help solve some of Lights bad choices. If this team doesn’t go AT LEAST 9 & 7 in 2019 Licht, needs to go. End of story!!!

  7. Jean Lafitte Says:

    camp meat

  8. Kevin Says:

Chucky 2.0 with all his Ex Raiders

  9. CLEAN HOUSE Says:

    This is a joke.

  10. FireJasonLicht Says:

Cappa is 6’6″ 330 but he is undersized? Bucs fan are so damn clueless. Utterly embarrassing!

  11. FireJasonLicht Says:

    2-11? Bro,you fools stop drinking and posting,please!!

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Not on the Cappa bashing bandwagon (don’t like him or dislike him, we’ve seen very little) but his actual numbers are 6′ 6″, 305lbs – that’s from the combine. Also his combine was below average, to really below average, generally being in the bottom 1/4th of just about every event. He might turn out to be just fine, but he had the draft profile of a 7th-UDFA, and Licht took him in the 3rd. Seemed like a major reach, but we shall see, I hope he looks great and locks down the position.

But this signing just seems like a depth signing, or perhaps doing a favor, who knows. Regardless you need bodies, you want people who know the system to help those that don’t, so the signing makes sense even if he doesn’t make the team (assuming he got a very very low end deal, which I’d expect).

  13. CLEAN HOUSE Says:

Licht and his friends are garbage, Kangol hat looks stupid

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

Just make it all very short deal, So that the New GM and new coaches will be able to get out of it when the “Clean House” commences!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. PriMech54 Says:

Competition, depth and bodies for camp. He doesn’t need to be a superstar & from the looks of it, he can play all across the line in at least 3 positions.

    It’s a one year contract…

    You people are so neurotic.

  16. Bird Says:

Dang. A lot of hate this morning.

Cappa should be jacked up and proper size this year. One full year to learn how to be a pro. One full year of actually working out with real strength trainers and not division III , this is how you bench guys. And Cappa could be right tackle for Dotson.

I just hope Benenoch is not on the field at guard. Watford has got to be better cause Benenoch played like a stale dog turd last year. My guess is that Evan smith is gone at 2-3 mil salary cause watford Has played almost every position on oline at one point. Especially for Arizona when arians there. His contract should be for peanuts.

  17. rrsrq Says:

Bucs still drafting a guard/tackle early, this is just experience to hasten the teaching on BA’s system.

  18. Buc believer Says:

5 teams in 2 years?? And this guy doesn’t suck? It’s starting to smell over at one Buc. AGAIN!!

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

How can anyone doubt who is making the roster choices here?

Jason Licht has been completely neutered.

I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I do know that this is more blind loyalty than Koetter ever showed.

Anyone know the contract terms this time? Still a one year deal?

  20. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Cappa is not undersized but his upper body strength is below average. He played tackle in college but was deemed as a guard due to his shorter than average arms for a 6’6″ guy. If he is able to add 10-15 lbs of upper body muscle this offseason then I think he has a good shot of winning the right guard spot. He has a mean streak but wasn’t to show much last year as he was learning the position and catching up to the NFL speed.

Still hoping we draft a guard and right tackle next month.

  21. D-Rome Says:

Jason Licht has been completely neutered.

I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I do know that this is more blind loyalty than Koetter ever showed.

Good! His horrible decision making in free agency over his 5+ year reign of terror have put the Bucs in this position. He’s earned his horrible record. Koetter failed as a head coach. Good riddance to him.

Every coach that has a history of coaching in the NFL does this. They want players they have coached and are familiar with. Koetter did it when he was coach here. If Bill Belichick were to coach another team he would bring in players that have been through his system.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

D-Rome, I understand that, but in this case the Bucs are ONLY bringing in former Arians players.

I’m looking for anything positive to latch onto this off season, but getting nothing. If these were good signings, they’d be longer than a year.

And don’t even get me started on re-signing Santos.

The only good move I have seen is getting rid of Jackson.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Arians & Goodwin thought this guy was worthy of a job….I’ll go with that for now.

Arians & his coaches have their hands all over the FAs……Licht is simply signing them up…..and that’s a very good thing.

Has anyone noticed how much younger we are getting…..Grimes gone, Fitz gone, Djax gone. Vinny Curry, gone, Bryan Anger, gone, Mitch Unrein, gone.

Those 6 guys are all over 30….

We are a much younger team…..and that’s a very good thing.

  24. rrsrq Says:

Bucs are stretching those pennies, did not everyone realize that there would be no big splash signings. Bucs are planning on coaching, player development, Jameis and the punter being the turn around. Look at the NFC south, Falcons lost Coleman, Saints lost Ingram and Okefor and have no first round pick, Panthers have done nothing, the question is can we compete in the division with what we have done/not done

  25. JabooBuc Says:

Rod Munch, I’m with you regarding Cappa and this is my biggest issue with Licht. I do believe he or his scouts want to be viewed as contrarians and the smartest guys in the room. Cappa was a 7th round talent at best. Yes, there was some buzz because he was throwing Div 3 players around like rag dolls but there were much better players available in the 3rd or 4th rounds at the G or T position. Players that could have contributed immediately.

I feel like he hit on Marpet and that was all he needed to show how smart he was. However, Marpet was a much better prospect and everyone knew who he was. Everyone knew who Cappa was as well but I don’t think anyone was clamoring to take him that early.

  26. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

We used to be jeered as Cleveland South. Oh how times have changed. Now we are taking taking guys off of their scrap heap and they are signing guy like OBJ and Kareem Hunt to go along with their stud D end, QB and Chubb.

  27. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Licht was trying be cute again and pull off another Marpet type of pick up. I saw an article comparing their measurables though and Cappa was not even in the same stratosphere as Marpet. Licht should have learned his lesson with Aguayo but he seems to have this desire to try and be the smartest guy in the league, and most of these moves just keep backfiring.

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

Lets not get too excited with the “Cardinals east” mantra. It makes absolutely perfect sense to bring in players you’re familiar with, ESPECIALLY if you don’t have money to spend on big-name FAs.
More than likely this is a depth signing. It may also point to how they feel about guys that are already on the roster like Cappa.
Last time I checked, this team needs bodies. You can’t sign all HOFers!

  29. BOD24 Says:

Lovie Smith 2.0, knew this would happen. It’s a Bucs life.

  30. Bill Says:

Waford is terrible as a starter. If Cappa can’t be him out, might as well cut him at the end of camp.

  31. TOM Says:

There are a lot of really decent OL that the Bucs will be able to get in the 2nd , 3rd or 4th rds. If the Bucs can keep Licht out of the draft room.

  32. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzi

You’re once again proving your ignorance is second to no one…. licht has ties to these same Arizona players that you are giving a washed up old man credit for…. remember licht was responsible for a lot of arians players in az… i realize facts are irrelevant in the fantasy world you live in

  33. cw_buc_crazy Says:

my god, his mission is to turn TB to Arizona…..no fantasy at all. sh.. in = sh.. out.

    BA = LoveS 2.0

  34. D1QB Says:

    Touchdown,

I don’t believe that JL is trying to be that guy. If He is, it’s not a bad trait. No one seems to aspire to the dumbest guy in the room. For good reason.
The posters on jbf should merely nod in recognition of a kindred spirit.

I don’t believe it’s the smart thing. It really seems that the scouting process begins with the east west shrine game. JL in his comments on Cappa, since He’s the subject, provides us with a timeline on when He was scouted. Every comment, begins with the time line of the bowl game and works backwards.

Now, this isn’t the only player JL gives us a initial impression on that is bowl game first, then the facts and stats. If you’re looking for a long term scouting report that begins before the bowls, He starts talking about those players completely different from the cappa types.

Add one more element in the mix. The influence of billichek . Which is value, value, value. Make a mistake, quickly cut it out, kickers are undervalued by front office guys and they’re the most valuable in terms of contributions and cost.

    JL checks all those boxes.

Obviously not an acquisition for the retooling and miracle turnaround yet.
