Bryan Anger Gets Punted; New Punter Is Signed

March 12th, 2019

UPDATED: 6:53 p.m. – The Bucs freed up a cool $3 million this evening by punting their punter, Bryan Anger.

And now they have a new one.

Joe doesn’t write much about punters. Anger was fantastic in 2016, and he didn’t earn his money after that.

This was a no-brainer for the Bucs, a team aching for available cash to spend. The Bucs should have no problem finding a less expensive punter who is at least as good. And perhaps they have?

ESPN reports the Bucs have their man, ex-49ers punter Bradley Pinion. He’s 24 years old and held down the job in San Francisco for the past four years.

Joe has been told there is a massive emphasis on special teams going on inside the walls of One Buc Palace. Hopefully, the new regime has a better handle on picking guys who kick for a living.

  1. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Amen, can’t fathom paying a punter that much. Still think he is the common denominator in our awful kicking game as well.

  2. scbucsfan Says:

As we will be punting a whole lot better sign a good one

  3. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

So we shall see if Anger-The-Holder was the problem after all…

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

Great move!!!! With all of jw3 turnovers, the punter is not as important!!!!!!!!

2019 season will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real’ fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. saskbuco Says:

Already singed one according to reports….Bradley Pinion from the 49ers on a 4 year deal.

  6. BOD24 Says:

Y’all are going to be pissed when we end up with Tom Tupa 2.0

  7. Defense Rules Says:

    Been waiting for this.

  8. Mark Says:

Is there a punter worthy of a second round pick?

  9. LJS4th Says:

With the 5th pick in the first round the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take PUNTER……

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Pinion’s averaged 43.7 yards per kick with a net of 40 yards over his pro career. He also handled kickoffs for the Niners…

…could this mean Matt Bryant is returning?

  11. TexBuc Says:

Nothing to see here an expected salary cap casuality.

“So we shall see if Anger-The-Holder was the problem after all…”

Not unless we bring back those same kidsckers. Not a theory I would want to test.

The new punter (Pinion) has a higher average and also does kickoffs (hint).

  13. scbucsfan Says:

You pinheads with the draft a kicker comments, you guys are so funny. So original.

  14. jjbucfan Says:

First Down- I’ve been saying it since Aguayo. To me it was quite obvious after our 2nd kicker. After the 4th or 5th kicker, I just had to wonder wtf was going on at OBP. Never even considered switching holders just in case. Wouldn’t it be something?

    “Nothing to see here… ”

That depends. It might mean they intend to bring back Bryant, who does not do kickoffs and would make about $3m I think.

  16. Slugglife Says:

    Good one Mark.

  17. Slugglife Says:

Makes you wonder how many games we would have won since the dip sh!ts let Bryant go.

  18. JimmyJack Says:

Well, there goes the coolest jersey in Buccaneers history.

There was a year or two that I actually believed he was our best player. He was too

  19. Kyle Says:

    yay!…go bucs

  20. Kyle Says:

so, how are we going to win 5 games with the current roster?

  21. Slugglife Says:

Patience Kyle. We’ve been waiting since 2002. What’s a couple more years?

  22. scbucsfan Says:

Kyle we won’t. Look 2 years into the future. Buy maalox and bourbon for next year.

  23. JimmyJack Says:

Our roster is good enough to win. We will win when we quit beating ourselfs and play fundamentals.

  24. adam from ny Says:

matt bryant has been spotted in aisle 7 at publix on dale mabry this afternoon…he was chomping down on those tasty chicken tenders from the deli dept and walking side by side with martin gramatica who was conveniently holding ranch dipping sauce for matt to dip his sh*t

  25. SteelStudBuc Says:

    @JimmyJack

That’s right… even Jameis can’t do a proper 3 step drop… Kwon was missing tackles left and right.. linebackers leaving guys unaccounted for… terrible. Coaching can fix these things.

  26. Figures Says:

This roster is NOT good enough lol.
    Maybe 6 wins.

  27. donuts Says:

I am really impressed that the Bucs have addressed the most important NFL position on the field in their minds….punter. BTW who signs a punter for 4 years? SMDH Im hoping that is bad intel.

I am going to do an Ira here……. I bet that Pinion will not see the 3rd year of that contract.

  28. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Kobe is being serious…

shouldnt we move up by packaging and trading our 5th, 6th, 7th round picks?….

since we have no money to play those guys?”

    LOL Kobe Faker

  29. Ndog Says:

Man you guys are a bunch of cry babies. I bet last year you are the same people that were crying about us not trading for Robert Quinn who Miami is desperate to get rid of while we stayed patience and are thrilled with JPP.

  30. donuts Says:

LeVeon Bell to the Bucs. You heard it here first. The 3rd team is not the Raiders as being reported.

  31. Gary Says:

    Agree. We need Le’Veon Bell!!!

  32. joestang Says:

still trying to get a punter and kicker. This team is about to hit a new low. Our roster will be worse than last years and we also lost depth at positions. Licht is a major problem, get rid of him and get a new GM, possibly Derrick Brooks. We need help at GM more than football players and thats sad.

  33. AlteredEgo Says:

I refuse to talk about punters

  34. JIMMY T Says:

    Hey BUC Realist,
Really? Taking a jab at our QB’s turnovers? We have a real coach that won’t throw his QB UNDER THE BUS! Jameis played very well, this team had issues on D & other than the Bengals game Jameis played very good. He was not the problem!

  35. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Bucs and licht are now ALL alone as worst franchise in nfl as browns going to super bowl & bucs still in basement, horrible

  36. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Jason Licht sits on his hands and a team that the bucs were neck & neck with has horrible as drastically shifted, licht could have signed kareem hunt, browns do, browns had a plan and built a solid defense and then built the rest, the bucs have added a punter and a safety/lb that was hurt last year….5-11 team with 5-11 moves

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Pretty awful net average, worse than Anger, but he does do kickoffs. Maybe Bryant is going to get a deal next.

  38. Buc4life Says:

We are signing punters while the Brown’s are building a nightmare of a team. Come on Bucs move some money and sign some real players!

  39. YucsFan Says:

WOW !!! The Browns aren’t playing around anymore and just landed OBJ for the 17th pick and Peppers !!!! Maybe the Bucs need to do the same with Mike Evans because it just a waisted talent on a team 3 years away from being competitive!!! Dog Pound is for real

Dog Pound

  41. YucsFan Says:

Wow OBJ to the Browns for the 17th pick and Peppers !!! Since the Bucs are a couple years away from being competitive, I would do the same with Mike Evans and hate having to see a waisted talent get lost on this team.. Dog Pound is for real

  42. YucsFan Says:

I’m now a Browns fan !!! OBJ joins the Dog Pound!! Bucs should do the same with Mike Evans since we are years away from being good again

  43. DBS Says:

They need a punter . You know we have 2 expect drive killers in Dotson and Smith.

  44. ATrain Says:

Holy Cow we freed up a couple million WOW

We need to free up some Cash

I know where we can get 13 million

  45. AlteredEgo Says:

Maybe Licht will trade down with the Giants now…

  46. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Surprised Licht didn’t use #5 pick on anpunter

  47. Buc believer Says:

I realize this is a bit off topic so I apologize but seriously watch out for Cleveland this year… just heard they acquired Odell Beckham. They are going to be damn good! Jason Gump should take a few lessons.

  48. Adrnagy Says:

Man.. juventus vs athletico Madrid was a good game. Oh I see we got rid of the punter and got another one that’s good I guess. And the browns being the browns, nothing change yet. Winning is what matters not signing big time. names. Last time I check the last 5 Super Bowls where won by team effort.

  49. scbucsfan Says:

You guys make puke. You want to be the Browns? Then go three years and sin three games. If that happened you’d die from a sore throat from all your complaining. To do that sell off all pieces worth anything and tank for three years. The crying in here would be legendary.

  50. Bird Says:

    John Dorsey making money moves
    For browns

Kareem hunt too. Depending on number of games for suspension.

    Wow

  51. Bird Says:

    Adrnagy

Say what you want but look out for the browns. You can talk crap to me if I am wrong.

  52. jjbucfan Says:

Someone wanted Cordarelle Patterson for returns, he gone! Looks like the Bears for 2 year deal.

  53. Bucfan1988 Says:

The Browns offense is getting STACKED now with the move for OBJ!!
And Todd Monken as Browns new OC is gonna have a blast!!
If he can deal with all those Divas and make it work, he will be a head coach the following year…

  54. donuts Says:

With the 5th pick of the draft, the Buccaneers select……………………………

    MATT GAY, KICKER UTAH

    Doh!

  55. jjbucfan Says:

Dee Ford? He gone! 49ers, LOL

  56. AwShbucs Says:

Dee Ford traded to SF for a 2nd round pick. With Licht?

  57. AwShbucs Says:

    Wth*

  58. Mike Evans Goat Says:

We can pay him all that money lol.

  59. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Cant^^^^

  60. Defense Rules Says:

@Kyle … “So, how are we going to win 5 games with the current roster?” There are still a LOT of roster changes yet to come Kyle. Until the roster gets fleshed out & finalized, there’s no way to predict what our record will be this year.

IMO, the draft will be the critical element that’ll make or break us simply because we can’t afford any longer to try to buy our way out of mediocrity. And that’s a good thing. #1 – Hire a competent coaching staff … check. #2 – Build through the draft … we’re in a decent position to do that. #3 – Develop younger players to serve as starters, key rotational players and DEPTH … refer back to #1. Let it all play out & see what happens. But in the meantime, KEEP HOPE ALIVE … after all, we’re Bucs fans; that’s about all we’ve had in recent years.

  61. Blackmagic00 Says:

Well, kwon just got alot better.

  62. what the buc! Says:

We just signed our MVP for the season! We can’t get anyone to come here!

  63. jjbucfan Says:

We have about 5-8 guys we know we are gonna cut, right? So why haven’t they been cut yet? It would free up money to make us somewhat competitive in FA. Not trying to break the bank but damn. Apparently Mark Ingram going to Lions, L. Murray to the Saints…we signed a punter…to a 4 year deal🤔

  64. Bird Says:

Dee ford trade was for 2020 2nd round pick. Smart move by lynch this time.

However , they are paying 17 mil and change so we cannot afford that.

  65. Adrnagy Says:

    @bird… you’re wrong.

  66. Adrnagy Says:

    Kwon & dee =suck

  67. Doctor_berto Says:

Maybe they won’t take a d lineman at 2 now and one of the big 3 will fall to the Bucs at 5

  68. Mike Says:

Hey don’t worry everyone!!’ Trending on NFL.com

Bruce Arians to create a full time coaching position for women!!!

    We’re on top of this…..

  69. Knucknbuc Says:

thank jason Dump!!! what a fantastic gm right joe??? ac/dc bumping jason dump making moves hes so fantastic where would wwe be without all his fantastic drafts and fa pickups???? all hail JASON DUMP EVERYBODY!!!!!!!

  70. 1loyalFan Says:

Starts from up top until the Glazers sell the Team will always be subpar….Licht can easily make the necessary moves to be great but he is to worried about keeping his draft picks….Cut one player everyone knew DJax was out but what about all the other scrubs the Beau Allen’s the Mitch Unriens guy didn’t even play a down last year and already got a roster bonus what other team does that. Welcome to town the best signing a punter let’s all drink to that.

  71. Mike Says:

We’ve signed a punter, a few no name Cardinals to the good ol’ boys, friends and family, loot the glazers plan, had a self promoting book signing, continued our mr. Cool coach narrative- and created a coaching position for women- I’ll tell my girlfriend to apply, she’s a real ball buster…..

  72. Buc believer Says:

@Mike…. he is going to have a woman as a coach because Geraldini went to him and said he is sick and tired of being the biggest Pu..y on the team.

  73. Bird Says:

    Adrnagy

Don’t go changing your poster name on me cause it appears new. Some people change their poster name cause they are scared of being wrong ?or backing up their previously made comments

Think browns are on the rise. Baker mayfield could do some amazing things with those 2 LSU receivers. We’ll see come December who is right

  74. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Man everybody is in rare form today with their whining. I like our moves and non moves.

    Moving MeJax- Win!!!!
Not resigning Hump for 9M- Win!
Not resigning Kwon for 13.5M- Win!
    Deone Buchanon- Win
    New punter- ok

I still think there are moves to be made but I like how we are playing this. Everyone is overpaying like a mofo. Just sit back let the dust settle and clean up with cheaper vets and salary cap casualties. I’m sick of overpaying for other team’s role players and making them starters.
Don’t listen to these dumb a$$ fans Licht, you are finally doing the right thing.

  75. jjbucfan Says:

That Buchanan signing will be a good one. Dude got injured and benched because he didn’t fit new coach’s scheme. He is an animal at the line and can cover TEs and RBs. Andre Ellington, meh. Would like to see Wilson and Ogbunwale get a real shot with a real coaching staff. Barber will be fine.

  76. Adrnagy Says:

@bird…. I’m here. Bucs for life. I ain’t jumping bandwagon and praising others teams glory.

  77. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Browns are building the “dream team”, how did that work out for the 2011 Eagles?
Who is captaining that ship? A first time head coach who called plays for half a season? Monk isn’t going to be calling plays so don’t give me that BS that he is chomping at the bit.
Remember it’s the Browns!! – nuff said

  78. Adrnagy Says:

    @bird …
I’ll put my bucs boys Winston, Evans ,Godwin ,Howard ,Brate and BOBo And if we use a 3rd rounder on a speedster. Against any.

  79. Mike Says:

    This just in… breaking news

New buccaneers woman’s coaching position options

    Tight ends
    Split ends
    Wide receivers

  80. Buccfan37 Says:

Of course the Browns will be competitive in the AFC North. The remaining teams in that division pretty much equally suck.

  81. jjbucfan Says:

Isn’t Gholston supposed to make 6+ mill? Unrein3+? Probably 4 or 5 other guys as well. Not whining. DJax had to go, Hump should have been done during last year, but at his price, wouldn’t pay him that. Kwon- at that price or anything north of 9 not worth it either. So hate to lose those guys but I agree all positives. I don’t want to overpay either, but get these guys off our books in case someone becomes available. I really just want a RG at this point since my dream of drafting a LT and moving D Smith to LG and putting Marpet at RG where he belongs died a week ago when we rewarded D Smith for apparently his “above average” play, LOL.

  82. Bird Says:

Read my posts. I think the bucs had best set of receivers and tight ends in nfl last year. Losing hump and DJax is now up for debate.

…browns have always been the browns

But Dorsey is legit and their GM now. And finally got a qb.
We got light who has made
Some questionable decisions over the last few years.

    Just saying.

  83. cmurda Says:

First of all this was a bit of a no-brainer but a very nice move nonetheless. Secondly, I don’t know if it was based on the perspective of being at the game against the 9ers but this kid seemed to be booming punts into the stratosphere. I even made a remark to my son that they looked like they were never coming down. I can only get sop excited over a punter but Anger wasn’t cutting the mustard and Pinion seems to be a solid punter. Another bonus is that he handles kickoffs which will come in handy when we sign Matt Bryant as our kicker. Know what I’m saying Joe. In the end, this saves us probably 2 plus million that we desperately need towards the cap.

  84. Rod Munch Says:

Gholston makes like $3.5m – I think he’s worth keeping for that if they go to a 3-4. The Bucs did salaries in a way to front load them when they had a bunch of space, so they could resign Marpet and Smith and next year Winston. The Bucs have zero bad salaries except for VH3 who they can’t cut since it cost his entire salary to do so. The Bucs have money if they thought players out there were better than what they have.

  85. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Wow.

I don’t want to see ANYONE claiming I’m too negative right now. After seeing the comments here, I’m feeling pretty good about myself!

On topic, turns out San Francisco fan are glad Pinion’s gone. I don’t know why. He’s only 24 and already as good as Anger, right? Maybe slightly better?

Off topic, the majority of comments above make great examples of fairweather fandom.

  86. cmurda Says:

Be careful about reading too much into these contracts players are signing in free agency. First of all, on the surface it’s reported that Kwon’s contract is a 4 year $54 million contract. Really, Kwon is only guaranteed $14.25 mill. The 9ers can cut Kwon in 2020 and nothing more is guaranteed. Not exactly the $13 million per year it looks like. It’s a front-loaded contract similar to what Rod was explaining above.

  87. Cobraboy Says:

I have followed Pinion for several years as a kicking geek, and the guy has a monster leg. I remember several years ago, before going pro, he set a Kohl’s Camp record with a 100yd. kickoff.

Having a punter double with kickoffs gives the team flexibility to get a guy who just kicks FG’s.

Good move, and a clear sign the team is also focusing on special teams, an area the Bucs have sucked on for years.

  88. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Rod Munch,

Sort of makes me wonder if they are holding onto the players they want to cut until they see who they draft, except when they can upgrade cheap, like in the punter case.

For example, not redoing a deal with GMC, but claiming they are keeping him, makes me think they hope to draft his replacement, then decide.

  89. jjbucfan Says:

Thanks Rod, I thought his salary went to 6 in 2019. I Would still get rid of him and lock up Nassib now, if he has another year like his half year here, we won’t be able to afford him. Gholston really isn’t a very good player, IMO.

  90. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

cmurda, the other is in case of injury…so he’d probable get the rest of the guaranteed too.

  91. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I agree with releasing Gholston and extending Nassib. Gholston has had years to meet his potential.

Nassib is young. Worse case scenario is he becomes another Gholston. Best case is he actually meets his potential for us.

The way I see it, add a few years to Nassib to keep him cheap.

  92. danr Says:

about time someone realized the problem with our pat’s

  93. jjbucfan Says:

Anger had to go for 3 mill a year- he wasn’t great last year. So far I like the Buchanon signing, like the Pinion signing, very Luke warm on Ellington but okay with it, could be a good mentor for Barber in this offense. Okay with the guys we lost. Still some work to do before the draft but so far so good I think. Need O-Line, D-Line, S and CB.

  94. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Cobraboy, how are his punts? I’ve seen nothing but negative about him from San Fran fans, but then, fans of teams that FAs leave tend to say bad things to justify the players leaving.

So far as kickoffs, I was listening to a podcast today that said Arians likes to force teams to return kicks, rather than get touchbacks. I don’t know how true that is.

  95. Ndog Says:

This draft is going to be LB, DE, LB, DT, OT, G, WR.

  96. Mike Evans Goat Says:

We signed breshad perriman former 1st round wr of Ravens

  97. jjbucfan Says:

Not a bad pickup if he can stay healthy.

  98. Rod Munch Says:

Perriman isn’t a bad signing – it’s a fairly cheap lottery ticket. He could get cut before the season, or he might be a solid deep threat that gets guys underneath open. When Funchess gets $13m ($10m base salary), basically everything is a bargain.

  99. El_Buc941 Says:

Tampa has resigned Cairo Santos. Reported by Rick Stroud moments ago. So there’s you “new” kicker for 2019-20.

ALSO REPORTS ARE BRESHAD PERRIMAN IS SIGNING WITU THE BUCS FOR A 1YR $4M DEAL!

BOUT TIME LICHT SIGNS SOMEONE SIGNIFICANT!!!

  100. Rod Munch Says:

Bonzai – Looking at the new punter stats, they’re not very good. He’s consistently been near the bottom in net yardage and his gross yardage isn’t very impressive either. Then again you’re only talking about 2-3 yards between a good net yardage and a bad one, so it’s not a huge difference – and if he is a great kickoff guy, then you probably save more than 2-3 yards there and it gives you the chance to sign a guy like Bryant as kicker if they want to go that route. If you combine kickoffs and punts, use them as one field position stat, then I think the signing might look OK – but it all depends on the money. If he took a 4-year deal I’m guessing it’s like $1.5m. But, if this allows you to sign Bryant and he’s still the same guy he’s been, then it suddenly looks like a good deal.

It’s official, I’ve talked myself into liking the punter signing.

  101. Rod Munch Says:

El_Buc941 – Santos was really good in KC a couple of years ago, so I have no issue if they keep him around. However we shall see what the terms are, and if he really is the kicker or if he’s just “a” kicker.

  102. Bird Says:

    Cmurda

It’s 27 mil guaranteed for Kwon

  103. cmurda Says:

My bad. I guess that’s what I get for reading Rotoworld. I guess if he doesn’t get over his injury, they can release him without the remaining approx $13 mill

  104. cmurda Says:

I don’t know about contracts really. Just when I think I have a handle on it, I don’t. However, my understanding is that Kwon’s 11.25 injury guarantee only becomes vested if he’s on the team April 1, 2020. In other words, if he stinks it up in 2019, the 9ers will have to fork over the 14.25 mill guaranteed in 2019 but the remaining 11.25 mill that is injury guaranteed would vanish if he is released prior to April 1, 2020.

  105. Bird Says:

Maybe there is offset injury language. You could be right
