Blasting The Bucs

March 25th, 2019

Criticized by national typist.

For a moment, Joe thought Brad Gagnon was a Bucs fan.

It seems only Bucs fans take delight in taking digital baseball bats almost daily to the good name of Gerald McCoy, one of this era’s top defensive tackles.

In fact, internationally popular JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman swears GMC someday will have his name illuminated in the Buccaneers Ring of Honor.

But Gagnon is the first national columnist Joe has seen trash GMC in an article. Gagnon believes if America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, fails this year and is discarded by the Bucs as a result, you can blame two players: GMC and Donovan Smith.

Writing for Bleacher Report, Gagnon says Smith is “a bust” and GMC eats up so much of the salary cap the Bucs cannot afford to upgrade the right side of the offensive line, which he believes will directly lead to Jameis’ demise.

Not only did they keep McCoy, who is past his prime and hasn’t been a game-changer for years, but they also spent $41.3 million on a new contract for Smith. That made it impossible to invest in a decent guard opposite the solid Ali Marpet, and it also made it harder to justify DeSean Jackson’s presence on the roster. Jackson is now back in Philly, and the Bucs also lost emerging safety-valve receiver Adam Humphries, which means Winston’s supporting cast is worse on paper than it was last year. The Bucs are in rough shape, and it’s hard to see light at the end of this tunnel.

Well, first the Bucs didn’t get rid of malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson because of someone else’s salary. Dude was a complete cancer who did his best to wreck Jameis’ career. Frankly, Joe is surprised Jameis didn’t throw Jackson through a locker at One Buc Palace (a real leader would have). Hell, even squeaky-clean Captain America, Roger Staubach beat the crap out of a mouthy Cowboys backup quarterback once.

Joe only wishes he could share what an NFL employee out of New York told him at the combine about this Jackson trying to Pearl Harbor Jameis. But “off the record” means “off the record,” which is sacrosanct to Joe.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has yet to declare GMC safe for the 2019 season, so Gagnon may be way too premature here. And as much as Joe respects GMC, Joe understands Father Time is undefeated and GMC is on the wrong side of 30.

Personally, Joe would have traded a second-round pick for Dee Ford and used GMC’s salary to pay for Ford and then draft this Quinnen Williams out of Alabama.

But the Bucs didn’t do that because… Carl Nassib.

Frankily, If Jw3 did throw a locker, Djax would not have had to worry, it would not have landed anywhere near him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 season will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Matt Says:

I simply don’t understand why Jason Licht is still the general manager.
Perhaps the sole role in his own survival was his relationship with Bruce Arians and ability to bring him on board.
But I see a mess when 2019 is awful and you have a losing general manager, a desire for a new one, a nearly 70-year-old coach and another average season at quarterback.

  3. Buc believer Says:

The national media is starting to say what the truth REALLY is! GMC is so overrated it’s not funny! We really need to wonder out loud why supposedly unbiased people, blogs etc have not said what the eye can see! Batman is SO overrated, NEVER takes over a game, dissapears in the late 3rd thru the 4th quarter, only cares about if the spotlight is on him and his robe! Cmon Joe let’s have some truth in reporting now! I realize this is an opinion blog but sheesh let’s get over this love affair.

  4. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

If another teams employee knows what went on inside the bucs locker room, then how did the bucs not know what was going on? And if licht did know and didnt send djax packing last trade season, then licht is a bigger moron than previously thought of and Either way the bucs management does not look good not knowing or ignoring what was going on in the locker room. This team needs a complete cleaning of the stink of the licht regime. The bleacher reporter is pretty spot on with his analysis

  5. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I have a hard time believing the Bucs will keep McCoy. It appears that the Bucs are being smart this year about releasing their players until the last minute. I am thinking the Bucs will trade McCoy during the draft or post draft. Not enough money to sign the rookies and get a few more players after the final cuts.

  6. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

Still don’t understand with all the money GMC (GetMyCash) has made and is set for life, why not take a little less to try and help the Bucs and himself a chance to upgrade other positions and try to sniff a playoff chance.

Unless….he wants them to deal him out of here?

  7. El Buco Realisto Says:

The funny part is how the local bucs media think that they are so tough and ask the hard questions around One Buc!!!!!!!! When in reality, they should have been in such great shape for carrying gmc jock $trap around for so long!!!!!!!!!!!! If the O-line would protect like the local media does with their favorites, the Bucs would have 0 sacks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What happened to all the ” Hold them accountable”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here we go again…..in an article about GMC, Donovan Smith and the cap….Joe goes on another rant about Djax (he’s gone) and Dee Ford (he ain’t here)

As I predicted, we will be subjected to possibly years of this…..you disrespect Jameis and you are in JBF-hell.

  9. Darin Says:

Doubtful Williams ill be there at 5. I hope if Allen is gone they trade down. An extra 2 and 3 would go a long way in helping the new coaches on both sides of the ball. I definitely believe the main problem last season was coaching but still gota get players that fit your own scheme. I still see a winning season.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

“When are the sheep going to open your eyes?

    This is the new NFL

The GM is more important than the coach

Without the players and talent, coaches cant do squat

Peeps here think im a buffoon and an idiot but its just to entertain. Kobe actually worked in the FO in a different sport. Now im a numbers chart profession…this is too much info

This below is the keys to winning and building a NFL team in this new NFL normal

You must draft successfully and the young players UNDER THE ROOKIE CONTRACTS must be the majority of the key playmakers of your team…..

AND YOU MUST REPLACE THEM CONTINUOUSLY

    RINSE AND REPEAT

Talking about Tampas future is ridiculous and futile

WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH YOUNG PLAYMAKERS

    THERE IS ONLY 1 SOLUTION

***The day we fire Jason Gump is the day the Tampa Bay Buccaneers get better”

    Kobe Faker

  11. ATrain Says:

Oh No a National media reporter calls out GMC

I thought only the dumb fans did that

Oh And a few NFL players

Well HMmmm. Maybe some of the Fans ARE Right

GMC is a Good DT no doubt but Elite NO WAY

    He doesn’t have the mindset

Your right JOE Bucs should have traded GMC and grabbed Dee

But I don’t think trading GMC wasn’t thought of by the Bucs or tried
I don’t think anyone would trade for a 31 yrs DT who had a 14 million contract

  12. Loyaltotheend Says:

So Joe wanted to trade a 2nd rounder for a guy who averages 6 sacks a year? The same amount Nassib got last year? When Nassib is cheaper and you get?

Man I’m glad Joe doesn’t run the Bucs because, Manziel would be our QB, Dominik the GM and they’d be over paying players who have one great year.

  13. WhatTheBucIsWrongWithYou Says:

No team should ever stand for their QB being disrespected, so JBF seems like a true fan most of the time.

“2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!”…what does that even mean? Answers like what? We don’t draft well, don’t develop well, and have embraced a losing culture for a decade? The “real” fans know that Jameis is the franchise leader in almost every passing stat in less than 5 years. And everyone like “get him out of here, he’s not even 25 he must be a bust” ummm….??

“Real” fans know that we can’t let another Doug Williams or Steve Young or Vinny Testaverde walk away again and see them thrive with another franchise.

Bucs fans are amazing, how can you not want to lose games anymore, but don’t want to spend money on tickets, don’t attend games, and ask for a qb and coaching change every 4-5 years…no team has success like that

  14. Justafan Says:

What is the infatuation with Dee Ford. He has has 2 good seasons out of 5. Ford is not 10 million a year better than Nassib. That’s how you screw up salary caps. A DE on a cheap contract is the next best scenario after a good QB on a rookie contract.

  15. Bobby M. Says:

Through out the league, all these elite…impact players are being released to build through the draft. Brown, Beckham, Ford, JPP, Mack….the list goes on and on. Yet we hang on to guys that have been statistical leaders of perpetual losing. It makes no sense. THE only player exempt is the QB….that’s it.

There’s a write up on this with King’s Monday column about how the good teams are able to get players on contracts that pay them less then their actual value….particularly draft picks in the late 1st rd – 2nd rd. GMs that can pick up additional picks in this area tend to field more competitive teams year over year then teams that have high picks. Teams that hang on to high priced players, end up with rosters lacking balance and depth. That’s been the Bucs.

  16. K_bassuka Says:

It would have taken about a 2d and 5th or 4th round pick for us to trade for Dee Ford (given that SF has better position picks than us) and about 2 to 3 good/maybe great seasons? Would it be smart to make that trade or perhaps use the trade capital to move up to the top of 2d or bottom of 1st to draft a falling pass rushing prospect that could be star for many years to come on the cheap? We almost made the same mistake last year with Quinn. Do Joe wants the Bucs to do everything possible to place all of their eggs on a player that will not be part of the team/overpaid in the next 5 years? I just don’t get it.

The old coaching staff suck and we finally have an NFL staff in place since Chucky was canned. I will trust the process until the games are played and I hope this coaching staff to turn this team around and start coaching this players the right way.

  17. Jim Says:

A bad team and Winston’s (3rd) “prove it” year. Oh boy…

  18. SteelStudBuc Says:

Can u blame Jackson for behaving like that? c’mon man… Jameis Winston isn’t America’s Quarterback…. I don’t know which one of u guys came up with that nickname, but it’s pathetic to label a 1st overall bust America’s Quarterback anymore…. look at what Jameis has done… he settled 2 court cases… nuff said… he’s a sexual deviant from Alabama… he’s dumb as he’ll too…. ignores coaching… throws into triple coverage and hang receivers out to dry like Cecil Shorts cam Brate Adam Humphries…. I could go on and on.

We need a real pro bowl quarterback

  19. donuts Says:

I dont think anyone cares what Jackson did in the locker room in 2018. He is not on this team and it sounds like just another excuse to aid #3. Winston will be treated fairly this year. I personally dont see this ending well knowing BA offensive style of 5 step drops etc. I love these Bucs but this is looking more like a plane in a nose dive. If the coaches adapt to what they have, we may see something different but will BA ego allow it.

I agree that GMC should have been traded for pick especially second rounder but I don’t think it was the offer out there; at a point it becomes the right “team” move. The teams that are always making the best team move regardless of popularity are the teams in the playoffs. Popularity doesn’t win championships.

Gotta admit Joe(s), that’s the first time I’ve seen “sacrosanct” used in a sentence. Kudos!

I don’t always agree w/ you gentlemen, but you all are extraordinary Journalist(s).

  22. Defense Rules Says:

@Gagnon … “Winston’s supporting cast is worse on paper than it was last year. The Bucs are in rough shape, and it’s hard to see light at the end of this tunnel.”

@Joe … ” GMC eats up so much of the salary cap the Bucs cannot afford to upgrade the right side of the offensive line.”

Horsepuckey to BOTH. Gagnon made his statement about ‘Winston’s supporting cast’ based on us losing DJax & Humphries I presume. Until FA & the draft are over, how can he possibly know that? Our roster has a long ways to go before it’s finalized. And Joe, GMC’s $13 mil salary has relatively little to do with us not upgrading ‘the right side of the OLine’. Bucs are presently #4 in the NFL in terms of OLine ‘cost’. We have THREE OLinemen each making BIG $$$, but our OLine as a whole is meh as a UNIT.

Our offense as a whole is the SECOND MOST EXPENSIVE in the NFL, eating up 58.3% of our Cap according to Spotrac. So Gagnon would have us do what? Take MORE $$$ away from a terrible defense and pump them into an already cost-bloated offense? Does that REALLY make any sense to anyone?

And Kobe, your 8:04 comment is spot on. It’s way past time that the Bucs started addressing the REAL issues why they’re not winning … Management, Coaching & Talent. They ALL leave a LOT to be desired. They’re ALL intertwined, and until ALL THREE are addressed satisfactorily, we’re just treading water. Glug glug glug.

McCottoncandy is a soft crybaby. The team is mentally weak in general and he is the number one culprit. AMF, the sooner the better.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

his supporting cast isnt worse than before….imo its an upgrade….

regarding GMC, he’s right….too much money and not enough production or impact plays…..they should restructure him or trade him….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  27. Willie Lawson Says:

A couple of seasons of stability are what this team needs. Hopefully this will happen. I’m looking forward to improved play. This season my thought will be ” beat the teams you should, and try to steal a few from the others.”

    #gobucs #teamjameis #teamgerald

  28. gotbbucs Says:

McCoy will be gone before the season starts. The number just dont work. They can hold onto him until they have to sign this draft class and then he has to either restructure or go.
They wont make any moves as far as big cuts until after the draft, it just makes no sense to do it before then as long as there wasnt any guaranteed money paid out at the start of the new league year.

  29. Phil Says:

Anything that gets GMC off the roster is good. It would be nice if we could get something for him.

  30. Smashsquatch Says:

GMC isn’t out of the woods just yet. I can only hope the Bucs have been setting themselves up to trade him on draft day. Makes sense to prop him up if you intend to market him.

  31. Joel Says:

Why isn’t this POS offering to lower his salary so we could improve our roster?

GMC is worthless. Selfish and overpaid. Can’t wait until we’re done with him in Tampa.

  32. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Kobe

Exactly IMO. Made this same point in the “window” thread.

Seattle had a window due to amazing defensive drafts. Not because Russel Wilson’s rookie contract allowed them to buy a SB team.

The Eagles were super competitive because they had built a complete roster with an emphasis on trench play. Not because of Wentz being on a rookie deal.

When the Broncos won their SB they had Peyton Manning under a big contract but they had drafted really well for their defensive core on top of signing 100% successful FAs. This is the closest thing to a team that won through FA, but without core studs they drafted like Von Miller, Chris Harris Jr, Bradley Robey (was one of the best #3 CBs during that time), Malk Jackson, Derek Wolf, Shaq Barett, and a bunch of others they are not anywhere near the same team.

You need a complete team and the only way to do that is to nail your drafting & development. Sprinkle in FAs but without good drafting and development you will be perennially f*cked

  33. Not there yet Says:

Well he’s not totally crazy three things he said were spot on. Geraldine eats up a lot of cap, he’s past his prime and has not been a game changer for years. No need to upgrade the corners because teams who want to run the call right up the middle can do so without much resistance.

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

So, let me get this straight, Donovan Smith and GMC will be the reasons for Jameis demise?! That’s the contention here?!
So, NOT the GM that can’t draft in the 2nd round?
Or, not because Jameis isn’t a franchise QB?
It will be because of a LT getting paid LT money and a DEFENSIVE FREAKIN’ TACKLE?!
The premise behind this is so utterly ridiculous that it’s not even funny!

  35. Buc believer Says:

GMC read how much us fans don’t want you here and do the right thing and just freeking quit! YOU SUCK!!!

  36. Kobe Faker Says:

    “LC

sooner or later the Bucsheep is going to realize what you and I agree with

the new nfl because of the salary cap …

the man in charge of the groceries is the key to the franchise

you have to have the vision and foresight to build a complete team and the only way is thru the draft

getting the franchise QB is only the beginning

you have to hit on these rookies and they have to be the major building blocks of your team. every year the draft has to plug holes and improve your team to get stronger and further toward the playoffs.

You can not continuously miss and try year after year trying to plug a position like we are doing in 3-4 positions…YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR

YOU KNOW HOW BAD IT IS?

What is the reason we cant get a shutdown corner this year?

Because the Teflon Gump missed so badly 2 straight years,

WE SPENT TOO MUCH DRAFT CAPITAL IN THAT DAMN POSITION!!!

There is only 1 man that is to blame for the last 5 years and CONTINUOUS LOSING YEARS…

    JASON GUMP”

(G)rab (M)y (C)heck in the Ring of Honor? That is an idea that makes me cringe. I’d be ashamed to go to the stadium! If that were to happen it wouldn’t be surprising if a few Ring of Honor members asked to have their names removed!

  38. JimmyJack Says:

Dump McCoy and use the cash to buy a good CB and this team improves.

If you get lucky enough to see Q drop to us the defense will have some real potential.

Forget paying for a overpriced EDGE guy. This draft is loaded with them. Draft 2 if you gain picks to play with.

If the team improves and you still need a upgrade at EDGE then you go big next year if your close…………Don’t blow your money now on long-term inflated contracts. You wait until you are one or two players away. When that happens we may not need EDGE it might be another position.

  39. diggler Says:

    @Defense Rules
That’s the thing the roster IS mostly finalized besides the draft picks. Bucs have no more cap room. What they have is what they have + another year of bad draft picks. There is no light at the end of the tunnel in Bucs land.

They should have kept Koetter on for 3 more years and play money ball. Get a good chunk under the cap THEN make a splash coaching play.

They Glazier boys don’t have Malcolm’s savvy.

  40. tmaxcon Says:

ring of underachivement is almost as laughable as calling dungy the clowns 2 playoff wins in 6 years glory years… outside of sapp, gruber and selmon that ring of honor is pretty laughable and mostly filled with backups

I said almost the same thing a few weeks ago only to have Hawaiian Buc bash it as stupid. Glad someone else sees it like I do. At this point in his career the window is closing quickly on ever playing in a playoff game or championship game. What does this say about his legacy?

  42. JimmyJack Says:

Dungy is a Hall Of Famer idiot

  43. Not there yet Says:

Roster is nowhere near close to finalized, they have a top 5 pick and 7 total picks in all. They need about 9 million to sign those players plus they are in talks to sign Blaine Gabbert. Something has to give even though I hope they are waiting until after the draft to make sure his replacement has been drafted.

Hoping the cardinals and raiders do something stupid like draft Murray and Metcalf then the jets go for an offensive tackle, want the team to get Williams to move from this guy and his bloated salary.
