Adam Humphries And The Slot

February 1st, 2019

Among league leaders.

While malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson bellyaches about his quarterback and pines to play for a SoCal team on national platforms, a better Bucs receiver also could be wearing different colors next year.

Adam Humphries is a free agent in six weeks. There’s no question in Joe’s mind he is the most consistent receiver on the roster. He may not be the best (Mike Evans) he may not be the fastest or loudest (Jackson) and he may not be fantasy football players’ secret crush (Chris Godwin).

All Humphries does is catch passes. He hauled in 816 yards last year, 33rd best in the NFL (which includes tight ends). No, he’s no outside threat. But he did lead the Bucs in YAC (yards after catch) with 414.

In the eyes of the PFF Tribe, Humphries is one of the better slot receivers in the game. They claim 59 of his 76 catches came playing in the slot, third-most in the NFL.

Yeah, the Bucs have to start counting their nickels this offseason. Humphries’ team-first demeanor and outright dependability suggest to Joe he’s a keeper.

The Team Glazer loot that would be burned to keep Jackson? Some of that should be house money allotted to keeping Humphries.

  1. Dirty Bucs Says:

I’m 100% on board with keeping Hump and letting Jackson walk. He’s the definition of consistency, toughness, and a team player. Give me a guy who catches 70 balls for 800, gets good YAC, and has sure hands on 3rd down any day of the week. Pay him the 5-6 mil per year he will require.

  2. BigHogHaynes Says:

Hump is our No. 4, 5 receiver…a keeper no doubt but anything over 3million a year is way to much on this roster!!! Please stop overpaying for mediocrity!!!!! And don’t put him and D Jax in the same sentence !!!! And stop giving away talented players!!! I’m going to leave it up to AB to get this ship on the right course!!! See you at spring practice D/Jax!!

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Joe get over mediocrity you’re clearly spending too much time around dungy the clown… talent wins championships not mediocre #5 receivers…. hump is a numbee with NO UPSIDE…. Watson and bobo much more talented

  4. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Don’t send him to NE, LA, Eagles, or any other contender. You send his whiny a$$ to the frigid air of Buffalo to be with a Yound QB and an underwhelming roster. Show people you can’t walk over the Bucs anymore.
Send Buffalo Jackson and 2 7th rounders for Buffalo’s 7th rounder. Yes, pay the Bills to take this little diva girl.
    Have some balls Licht.

You pay Hump up to 6/yr. Bighog you are starting to sound like Tmax bro, how do you support this premadonna, this priss?
Hump is way more of a man, he will go over the middle all day, catches damn near everything, and always makes the first guy miss. He is a crafty, quick, slot receiver in the mold of a Welker. He is a weapon for us and if god forbid Belichek ever got a hold of him, he would be a hero there.
I believe we will be outbid for Hump, he will get 8M+/yr

  5. Joe Says:

Joe get over mediocrity you’re clearly spending too much time around dungy the clown

    Don’t think he’s mediocre.

  6. westernbuc Says:

Hump was better than Godwin in fantasy, especially PPR. I picked him up and he was legit, helped me get 2nd

  7. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

Godwin can replace DJax as dead threat him n bobo. Keep them Hump n last year’s rookie Watson for less money then Djax alone n get the same results or more while saving us about 2 to 3mil n that’s if we pay hump 7 to 8mil🤷‍♂️

  8. D1 Says:

    Big hog,

Hump is in no way mediocre. Granted He’s not flash or elite but He is a piece of the puzzle.
If you consider how many missing pieces this team currently searching for, having one less is a big deal.

I will say Hump is far and away the best route runner on this team. There’s been many games when He is the only receiver who can get separation in man coverage and the dude hs an internal GPS thats set to find holes in zone coverage.

    Re. DJAX
I am looking for BA to bring him back and get him the ball.

  9. firethecannons Says:

Hump is a keeper for sure, definitely DJax needs to be gone, enough wasted money on that clown. Players like Hump is what makes the Bucs special.
Send DJax to the Cardinals to help with the rebuild, lets get a 5th round pick too.

  10. Jerry Jones Says:

Tmax surely leads a life full of mediocrity to have to comment about it so much. Cleveland is calling your name so take your sorry a$$ where you’ll be appreciated.

  11. dmatt Says:

BoBo n Justin Watson just need some PT. I would b done wit DJax cause his interest is himself n not the team. Humphries is football by nature n DJax is all about the benjamins. He’s garbage to me cause once he’s paid, forget sacrificing his body to make a critical first down or just even fighting to prevent a int. Who do he think he is a pimp…send all the players out for work while he sit back n play cards in the locker room while getting paid. He’s a poor excuse for a professional NFL player. Humphries will go all out to make a play n is an example of a true grit player.

  12. Pancake block Says:

Humpty hump over MeJak all day every day. This shouldn’t even be up for debate. Team first person that loves the game. Not the natural talent that could care less one way or the other

  13. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Does production even matter anymore?

Humphries has outperformed DJAX…30 more catches for 50 more yards last year and 11 more catches for virtually the same yardage in ’17.

Humphries had cods…DJAX has cojones the size of bb’s. He doesn’t play in the middle of the field and has mediocre hands.

One player is a young guy whose production is trending up, the other is an older dude whose production is falling off.

DJAX has a game that DC’s easily adjusted to by moving their safeties. So yes he ties up a safety but we saw what happened to DJAX after the first four games where he got more than 50% of his production. And no it wasn’t just JW it was Fitzmagic who started some games after those first four when JW got benched.

Hump is our Edelman and we need him.

  14. Noles Says:

    T Max

If Bobo was more talented he would bave been on the field. Bobo also has a history of being a Jack Wagon to say the least… Let’s see on Watson but Hump is a legit slot receiver in this league and well worth the money. We may or may not be able to afford him based on all our needs but he is a very good player. He has continued to improve each year again He is not he fastest but always open… he is not the biggest but always make contested catch. He also had a lot of the 3rd down conversions. There is a reason Winston trust him
Bc HE IS GOOD & RELIABLE. Plenty of others players to rag on this roster just dont think Hump is one of them.

  15. BucSpain Says:

    Julian Edelman 74 850 6TD
    Adam Humphries 76 816 5TD

Those look like very similar numbers to me. Yes, Edelman was suspended first 4 games, but he’s much more heavily featured in that offense. And if you look at Humphs’ stats, there’s a clear upward trend.
And you don’t need stats to know he has heart.
No question we should keep him over DJax, IMO.

  16. Wombat Says:

Love Hump, but lets don’t get too excited!! He can be replaced very easily. We have receiver depth and good teams let the average players go… We have kept average players because on this team they look like stars. He is an outlet passer and has never ever got behind anyone deep…. buh bye!!

  17. Pickgrin Says:

    Pay the man!

Adam Humphries is a shining example of what hard work, grit and determination looks like. A true “glue guy”. Not to mention being a legit “security blanket” for Winston on third down.

His stats over 4 years as a #3/4 WR show exactly how valuable to this team Hump is.

He will give 100% effort every game – every play – no matter what.

I still remember training camp of 2015. It was Winston’s first year as well and I wound up going to like 3 or 4 of the Bucs TC practices that year. And Humphries consistently stood out as an undrafted rookie from day 1. Not just stood out – it was more like – wow – this guy makes his play and then some EVERY single time he gets an opportunity.

And nothing has changed – in 4 years. Hump is pretty much the poster child for what and where hard work and effort will get you in the NFL – even starting as a UDFA.

Nothing about this guy’s work ethic will change once he’s getting paid real NFL money either. Of that you can be sure.

    Pay the man!

If it winds up being $7-8M per year – so be it. You do what it takes to keep this guy on your team. He is a REAL FOOTBALL PLAYER!

  18. BucEmUp 7 Says:

Hopefuklly they keep him but worst case watson and evans on the outsode with godwin in slot rotating outside. I really want humphries but if he leaves theu beyter replacr him with someone better.

  19. BucEmUp 7 Says:

    BUCSPAIN YES 100%!!!

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I want him but it’s all about the money…..hopefully we can get him for less than $5 mil…….so, lets use $5 of Djax’s $10 on Humphries & the other $5 on Barber & a Backup QB.

Then we will have $20 from GMC & Curry along with the rest of the cap room to work on the Defense & Oline.

Focus the draft on the lines.

  21. macabee Says:

Never know what happens when a player is allowed to get to free agency. I want Hump back too and pretty sure they reach an agreement, but Bucs can’t overpay. Keep WR Hunter Renfrow in mind when negotiating – another Humphries clone from same school Clemson.

  22. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I like Hump, but why does everyone feel like each player has to fit a role. Outside receiver, slot. Some teams in the league move players around to create matchups they like. I’ve seen Micheal Thomas and Julio Jones line up in the slot and wreck people. Larry Fitz has been very successful find this in Arians offense as well. No more of the he’s an X or he’s a Z. We should have the flexibility to move receivers around to create mismatches. I like Hump, but I wouldn’t spend more than 5mil for a receiver that doesn’t have special physical told that can’t easily be replaced.

  23. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

Omg here we go again with joes love affair with mediocrity

  24. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

“OMG he catches the ball!!!!!!! Sign him to contract!!!!!!!” – Joebucsfan

  25. Buc believer Says:

Off topic, Cam Haywood is reacting to Contes getting bitch slapped in the Steelers game. EMBARRASSING!!! What a P…Y Conte looked like!

  26. TDTB Says:

Thanks for the hard work Adam. You were a great employee. Regrettably you lack the skills required to be a 1 or 2 option here, so we wish you continued success in your career.

  27. Buccernutter Says:

    7423 is dumber than tmax.

    Or is he tmax!?

    😮

  28. 813bucboi Says:

love hump….but it may come down to numbers…..gotta see what bob and watson can do…..but i would love to resign him….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!

  29. RickinFtMyers Says:

All Adam Humphries does is contribute to team success by producing within the scheme and all the quarterback driven league nonsense aside, in today’s NFL production is the name of the game. My take on this is to let DeSean Jackson, who can apparently only produce when one qb is on the field but not the other go on down the road and redirect some of his salary to keeping Humphries who somehow manages to produce regardless of who is throwing the ball.

  30. RickinFtMyers Says:

Most of you all really don’t understand football is a team game where every player has a certain contribution to make and if they make that contribution the team is generally successful. Teams that somehow maximize the contribution of every player generally find themselves in the conference championship game and for the fortunate two teams the Super Bowl. It like Bill Belichick says, “Do your job.”

And which Buccaneer exemplifies the “Do your job” mentality better than Adam Humphries? I won’t quote his stats, because you can look them up for yourselves, but just compare his team first attitude to DeSean Jackson’s which is apparently all about himself. While Jackson railed about Jameis Winston getting his starter’s job back, because for some reason Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jackson were having more success hooking up on the long ball than were Jameis Winston and Jackson, all Humphries was doing was being productive regardless who was throwing him the ball, contributing to what limited success the Bucs enjoyed this season.

Like Joe, my take is let Jackson find his bliss elsewhere and redirect some or most of his salary to keeping Humphries on the the Bucs’ roster. After all, Humphries seems able to produce regardless of who the QB is without whining, muling, and puking.

  31. TOM Says:

Edelman #1. Hump #1a. Needs to be signed. Sooner rather than later.

  32. Landlubber Says:

Would be absolutely @$!#ING criminal to keep that POS Jackson and lose Hump!!!

  33. Robert Says:

love Godwin, but he’s not #2 material and proved it. Djax was missed when he was hurt. ME is simply crabmans partner in stat padding. He’s not elite. I bet Talib would take his lunch money. Given the fact crabman can’t be accurate past 12 yards we need guys like Hump and the two LEGIT TE’s we have. Model it after New England and Hump is worth his money all day long. Someone has to go though from a money standpoint. (I say winston) maybe djax because he wants out, maybe Brate too, cause if we dump D jax we’ll need another #2 WR.

  34. Wesley Says:

    Tom ^ gets it.

  35. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Roberta- you are probably the most ill informed/misguided Bucs fan out there. Model after NE? NE hasn’t played that 12 personnel for 10 years buddy. Also love to tell you but Jameis is one of the best intermediate/deep throwers out there (to anyone except MeJax). Check the numbers.

  36. Dapostman Says:

Humphries is another grinder who has improved every year. Sign him.

  37. The Coroner Says:

    Makes too much sense.

  38. pick6 Says:

extend him, and give him the number 11 back. it’s a number worn by tough slot guys who catch tough passes and don’t complain.

  39. catcard202 Says:

It makes sense to cut DJax & utilize the $10M in cap space freed up to sign Hump… He’s in the prime of his career, one the most dependable slot WR’s in the league & due a hefty raise… Anything in the 3yrs/$26M to 4yrs/$41M seems in-line with his future value/production expectations.

  40. LongSeason Says:

Hit the road DJax. Don’t need you here no more. You bet. Keep Humphries. All he does is contribute.

  41. Cobraboy Says:

    Humphries will be a Buc.

  42. Pruritus Ani Says:

Keep him. A solid consistent receiver. Not afraid to go across the middle and take a hit.
