Shuffling Cash

February 13th, 2019

Likely kept, but at what cost?

The Bucs may franchise tag Donovan Smith. And that $14 million+ to pay for Smith this season may come from the pocket of another Bucs player.

That’s the word being distributed by Rotoworld.com. It seems Rotoworld learned the Bucs likely will tag the maligned left tackle because the Bucs really don’t have any viable options to replace him. But that cash will likely come from a pot once allocated for recently cut defensive end Vinny Curry and potentially from monies set aside for Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

Tagging Smith isn’t a surprising move to Joe. But it is surprising that the Bucs may sacrifice GMC in order to keep Smith.

Are the Bucs really that fed up with GMC? Has GMC really fallen off the cliff that much that a left tackle many Bucs fans want to run out of town would be kept over one of the NFL’s top defensive tackles?

Joe was pushing for the Bucs to use GMC’s cash to sign defensive end Dee Ford, if Kansas City was dumb enough to let Ford hit the market. Joe didn’t figure the Bucs may cut GMC in order to pay for an offensive player.

I suspect that age, production and a deep draft class at DL have all tilted the balance against Geraldini. He’s not nearly as valuable at his current cap hit as an above average LT. The bigger question is whether the new regime views Smith as above average? He’s wildly inconsistent, mostly finesse and prone to loafing- but is he j-u-s-t good enough, young enough to rent for $14M??? Tough call.

  2. pelbuc Says:

This defense needs a complete overhaul and if letting go of one of the better players on the sorriest defense is a consequence, so be it. GMC’s best days are behind him and it’s time we start learning from the Patriot way.

  3. tmaxcon Says:

the same stud bucs dt that disappears when it matters most and is the softest player in nfl history…. good riddance…. these young studs will finally have a chance when the leader of the losing culter and undisputed face of the basement years is shown the door. it will be the third greatest day in bucs history behind drafting sapp and super bowl.

jameson will be flowing when the headline reads “Cancer93 shown the door” it will be the first time in a decade the Bucs have hope.

i’ll be right on two fronts that cancer93 would never win a meaningful game in his bucs career and these fools thinking he has trade value outside of mid to low round are just that fools.

“would be kept over one of the NFL’s top defensive tackles?”

Come on Joe. You’re better than that. You sound like one of these nationals that still think GMC is an All-Pro because they haven’t watched a Bucs game in ten years. Other than Ali and Jensen, this oline needs to be swept clean and they need to pick up a proven LT if they’re gonna spend a bunch of money on a guy that has never come a smig close to being a Pro Bowler and gets ran around all day.

  5. Etzel Says:

Everyone assuming he will sign the 14 million tag…. I’m not so sure he couldn’t get more elsewhere….

  6. Loyaltotheend Says:

LT is a more valuable position than DT come on joe you know this

I’d like GMC back but only if he takes a pay cut

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t think you can look at it……GMC for D Smith…….there will be a big pile of Cap money from Curry, GMC, Djax & others…….dollars are dollars…..for all we know….Smith will be replaced by cutting:

E Smith, C. Benenoch, Beau Allen. W. Gholston & Bryan Anger

Who really cares where the money came from?

  8. SOEbuc Says:

Don’t know why people hate on Anger so much. The guy’s a good punter he’s just a sh!tty holder.

  9. Bucafan951 Says:

No that money for smith will come from curry, Mitch U, and gholsten.

Until someone who works currently in the NFL or someone who used to work in the NFL tells Joe that GMC stinks, then Joe will start to believe what his haters want Joe to believe.

Joe doesn’t see a guy who gets owned play after play like many want Joe to believe. And those who do or used to collect checks in the NFL based on their football knowledge and or personnel savvy have yet to tell Joe that GMC has turned into Akeem Spence.

I don’t hate on Anger at all….he’s a very good punter…..but we have many good players who may end up being sacrificed because of cap problems……it happens to many teams all over the league…..

If we can trade the $3 mil for a $1 mil punter……use the $2 for another player.

  12. macabee Says:

PFT reports via Rick Stroud/TBT that the Bucs will try to re-sign and if they can’t franchise tag him. If the Bucs tag Donovan Smith, I don’t think they will use the franchise tag. I think they will use the transition tag instead where they will have the right to match any offer made by another team. There is some risk, but is mitigated. 31 other teams have seen the same tape we have. Per OTC, the projected transition tag for O-Linemen in 2019 is 13.7mil. The projected franchise tag is 15.2mil.

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

We’re in a sh1tty situation with Smith. If we move on there is no obvious upgrade at LT in either FA or the draft. So for those who are clamoring to let him go – please tell me who we are upgrading that position with?

Alabama kid projects as an OG.
Jawan Taylor has been playing RT.

Those are the only 2 I’ve seen projected to go top 10.

Both maybe could be LTs but neither are proven. Hell I remember when 2 OTs went top 3 and both sucked early.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

Be sweet to see if Cody Ford could fall to us in the second round to play RT. No clue why Leidtke and Wester aren’t being talked about to possibly take over. They both showed up in TC and PS last year. Especially Leidtke. I love Leidtke and would have no problem with him being a top contender for the starting roll. Found his G-spot moving from OG to OT last year. All these guys would be getting paid zilch also compared to some average player that wants All-Star money.

  15. Robert Says:

I’m all in for playin McLovin at LT.

least then crabman will get KTFO and we can let someone real play qb. then the change can begin

  16. Robert Says:

    flacco to Denver, damn!!!

  17. down in the dirt Doug Says:

Pelbuc you are right on the money. The Patriots cut good players while they still have trade value.GMC has to go!!!!

  18. Lord Cornelius Says:

    lmao @ Denver.

Flacco has been terrible for years.

  19. Wausa Says:

GMC is a good player, but he is not a $13MM a year player right now.
Perhaps the Bucs will want to keep him one more year at that salary, but my guess is GMC would be hard pressed to get more than $8MM a year unless he signs a one year contract with someone.

  20. Bird Says:

    Tmax (wearing thong)

Who are these young studs you are talking about on defense ? That McCoy has held back.

You hate every player and have ripped every player not named Jameis

  21. SOEbuc Says:

    Joe

Never worked in the NFL but what I see is a soon to be 31 year old 4-3 DT that’s a sluggish jogger to the ball when it gets out of the back field, had 6 sacks, 6 TFL, and 28 combined tackles last year and likely won’t get better with time that wants $13 million. I’m not bringing him back for $8 million cus he’s the worst, oldest starter on this d-line. Quinnen Williams, Josh Allen, Ed Oliver #5. Powerful young speed boats that don’t quit till the whistle is blown.

  22. canadianbucsfan Says:

Winston should be the one taking a pay cut. I believe and root for him but he should sign a 1 year prove it deal for less then what he is about to make.

  23. 813bucboi Says:

    i hope they restructure GMC & LVD…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!

  24. Trench War Says:

Why do I get the feeling Gerald broke tmaxcon’s Joker doll.

  25. Robert Says:

praise be to canadianbucsfan as he speaketh the truth

JW should take at least a 10 mill haircut

They should put a 250k per turnover in his clause too.

  26. Robert Says:

but then he’d be paying them, so that might not sell

  27. Joe Says:

Why do I get the feeling Gerald broke tmaxcon’s Joker doll.

    Now THAT’S funny! 😆

  28. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Joe didn’t figure the Bucs may cut GMC in order to pay for an offensive player.” Agree with TBBF, it really doesn’t matter where the money comes from or where it goes to. If you create a hole someplace, that hole still needs to be filled. Still think the Bucs will first try to restructure GMC’s contract because he’s clearly not a $13 mil DT any longer. Not that many are.

Franchise tagging Donovan still makes the most sense to me, but simultaneously I’d also draft a Tackle with our 1st or 2nd pick. We NEED 3 OLinemen anyways, and at least one will be a draftee. Bucs don’t have years to develop one … we tried the route of drafting in the latter rounds and ended up with Pamphile, Benenoch and Kadeem Edwards … just since 2014 (how could anyone forget the memorable 5th Rnd pick Kadeem Edwards … he almost made it off of the practice squad).

  29. GhostofSchiano Says:

Just here for the Tmaxcon comments…..have to say I expected a little more, a bit disappointed.

Cancer93 to Cleveland in Free Agency……I wonder what dance moves he will unleash on the Cleveland sidelines? Will Mayfield oppose or join the dance club? Oh 2019 will be interesting to watch.

  30. GhostofSchiano Says:

Just here for the Tmaxcon comments.

  31. SnookTB Says:

GMC doesn’t dominate games like elite DTs do. He never has. I’m not sure why this webpage continues to stick up for him. Same with Jameis.

Hasn’t this website bashed Jerremy Stevens? But advocated for the Bucs to sign Kareem Hunt?

    Hilarious.

  32. Pickgrin Says:

A lot depends on GMC’s willingness to restructure IMO….

Bucs are somewhat likely to try and trade Gerald if he’s not willing to continue playing here for about 35-40% less than the $13M per he’s due to make the next 3 years…

Perhaps it would be best for both sides if we could get a mid round pick for McCoy from some DT desperate team. Gerald gets a fresh start – gets to make all his $ – and the Bucs get an extra $38M to work with over the next 3 years….

If we are shifting to more 3-4 type base looks which I believe will be the case – then McCoy is probably not going to be very happy playing NT or “End” in a 3-4 alignment anyways…

  33. Bucnjim Says:

Things McCoy and Smith have in common:

    Taking plays off
Once beaten on a play they give up
In the NFL for love of the money
    Average players for premium price
Neither are leaders or anywhere close
Both ham it up for the camera
Both seen laughing it up while losing
Both are more concerned about how they look

But hey let’s give them a substantial amount of money and continue our losing ways

  34. passthebuc Says:

You give Smith a long term contract and he will balloon to 400 lbs and miss 6 games. He is only here for the money, there is no drive to excel.

  35. reach87 Says:

Bucjim that is the most moronic statement I have read this year. You sound like a parody of a Maude remake. Get a hold of yourself, please. Go Bucs!

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Who would be cheaper to tag? Smith, Alexander or Humphries?
