Arians Holds The Hammer

February 7th, 2019

Forced marriage with Jameis?

So here is the deal: The Bucs may have the best deep threat in all of the NFL. But in the past two months, said wide receiver has made it clear he doesn’t want to play with the Bucs’ franchise quarterback and he also wants to play for the Rams.

This week Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians is (was?) scheduled to have a sitdown with malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson to see where Jackson stands and, perhaps, find a way to ease Jackson’s concerns and sweet talk him into staying in Tampa Bay.

But what kind of a sell job would Arians have to push to accomplish this?

Last week in Atlanta, Joe had a chance to chat with long-time NFL scribe, “The Professor,” John Clayton of SiriusXM NFL Radio, about how the Bucs could pacify Jackson enough to get him not just to stay with the Bucs but to play nice with Jameis.

Clayton said in so many words, Arians holds the hammer.

JoeBucsFan.com: DeSean Jackson may want Bruce Arians. Bruce Arians wants Jameis Winston. DeSean Jackson doesn’t want Jameis. How does that get resolved?

John Clayton: Well, it is resolved on Jameis. He’s the quarterback. We know that. On Jackson, they can still do some talking. Now the problem is, in the conversation – obviously Bruce wants [Jameis] – how to you talk DeSean into it when it doesn’t seem as if he has any kind of system or any kind of love for Jameis? I mean, you can see that every time [Jackson] is in there, there is no kind of chemistry. They would have to be able to figure it out. Now Bruce Arians, he can get the chemistry going but the problem is, how can you get Jackson to the point of coming in and doing that?

This sort of sounds like what JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman said on a recent podcast (FYI, Ira’s next pod is a bit delayed by a technical issue but it’s coming. Joe just asks for your patience). Arians could strong arm this rift into a Middle East peace agreement.

We all know Jameis tried to force deep passes to Jackson. Obviously, when a guy has no interest in practicing, it’s pretty hard for any quarterback to get in lockstep with a receiver, doesn’t matter if it is Jameis or Tom Brady.

Arians might allow Jameis to force a pass once or twice to Jackson before Arians reads Jameis the riot act to knock off that s(p)it. And Arians could tell Jackson to either fly right or get the hell out of town, his choice.

Then again, as Clayton asked, how does one get Jackson to agree to this?

In Joe’s eyes, it might just be better to use Jackson’s cash to keep Adam Humphries and go buy John Brown, who runs as fast as Jackson and has about the same 2018 stats and far less drama and hand-wringing

If you keep him and it doesn’t work you will not be able to trade him like last year. No one will give us anything for a WR about to hit free agency. Interesting to see if Djax would be returning punts…

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

The ain’t no “sell job”….DJax wants to play for a PO team with a chance for a ring…with a QB that can hit him in stride….

Licht had all this on his desk last trade deadline and he BLEW IT !….we should already have an extra draft pick and discussing what to do with it….Licht BLEW IT…

  3. Crack3rK Says:

Clayton’s answer made absolutely no sense. At all.

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

…but for some reason Brown doesn’t garner the same respect from the defense as DJax. There are almost always two defenders covering Jackson keeping Evans relatively clean. Brown doesn’t and will draw man to man and Evans will be shadowed all game. I know that it sucks, but it is true. Even Mike Evans practically said this.

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I’m so done with all this DJAX crap

……just get rid of him already!!!!!!!!!

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

DJAX has now turned into another cancer to the team………..it’s already bad enough we had Cancer93 all this time

……..just get rid of this clown

  7. Larry Says:

People like Jackson can poison a locker room. the Bucs have enough problems without that. The Bucs can do fine without him and his whining. anyone could see he wasn’t going to work out because he refused to come to the first ota’s and mini camps his first year here. It has gone down hill from there. Since he is under contract it seems like he could be traded to the Rams for a late round draft pick and let the Rams sort out his over paid contract. The Bucs and their fans may have to bite the bullet with some of their current players until they get what Arians really wants. Licht let his salary cap get away from him by hiring and drafting too many players who haven’t panned out. Hopefully Arians can help change that.

  8. Couch Fan Says:

Finally something Anthem and I can agree on. Get his sorry @SS out of Tampa. Let him go to another team that will pay him less, where he will continue to not want to practice as his career declines into nothingness. Good riddance to that jack@ss

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Sorry, another snow job. DJax is unhappy on the Bucs. DJax is scheduled to make $10 mil this season. Bucs need that $10 mil for much greater needs than WR. Nice talent, but he’s unpredictable & he’s a luxury at this point. Yes Coach Arians DOES hold the hammer, in more ways than one. Bye bye DJax.

D Jax is special. Fitz proved it. Also proved crabman is crabman

D jax will be in the league longer than crabman

I understand it’s the offseason and I understand you have to find things to write about but please for the love of God nobody gives a crap about DeSean Jackson nobody wants him here nobody is interested in hearing how she can the retooled and worked on to this team and make it work next season. He needs to go he needs to take a pay cut for whatever crappy ass team he lands on or he needs to retire he’s a crybaby he’s a bad teammate he’s a little b word. He can’t get out of Tampa fast enough goodbyeDesean

    Larry

cancer93 poisoned the locker room years ago with his love of losing and soft ways… the only reason talented players get labeled as a malcontent is they are sick and tired of playing for a minor league NFL franchise with no hope for the future and one that has NEVER competed consistently in 42 years… what makes talented players malcontents is knowing damn well they don’t have a chance. how would you feel waking up every day knowing you had no chance at success there are two types of players career losers like cancer93 who accept it or talented driven winners like djax who get frustrated and blow their cool. djax is not a malcontent he just does not accept failure and losing as easy as a glazer trained bucfan. no one fears talent and personality more than a bucfan.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

bruce has to be smart and look at the big picture…as in team….that $10mil would be better used up front along the dline & oline….frank clark-DE or trenton brown LT….

This is not “finding.” It is not only the biggest Bucs story of the offseason, it is one of the biggest in the NFL. Joe is in NO WAY going to ignore this. If you don’t deem this to be a story, don’t read it. It would be and is grossly irresponsible to ignore this subject.

  15. WalkdaPlank Says:

There goes tmax again showing love for a receiver who hates his favorite quarterback. It’s puzzling…

Bullcrap. He knew all that before he got here and he still choose to come here for the money. Not want to practice and then use excuses for having no “chemistry” with Jameis knowing full well he doesnt practice hard at all. I agree with you about GMC for the most part but you are just full of it when it comes to DJack@ass

  17. tmaxcon Says:

    WalkdaPlank

Championship franchises don’t coddle to players they have leadership and figure out complicated relationships not take easy route and tossing talent. Choir boy patrol low standard bucfan loves the easy way out by letting talent walk in favor of basement titles and overpaid career losers who lose quietly with no heart.

  18. tmaxcon Says:

    Couch Fan

Championship franchises can manage both personalities and talent bucs cant manage eitherr The circus like drama year in and year out proves it . From Freeman to djax its always some bullcrap that an organization with solid leadership avoids completely or is able to minimize

  19. Couch Fan Says:

djax is not a malcontent he just does not accept failure and losing as easy as a glazer trained bucfan
    ——————-
Another ridiculous stupid comment. No he doesnt accept failure. He whines and cries about it while refusing to work out. LMAO. Comical how you can look past all of it simply because hes talented. Talent + Lazy = Bum

  20. zzbuc Says:

Joe —-I wouldn´t go so far to call it grossly irresponsable, but needs attention. The problem with this situation is not DeSean going somwhere else, the biggest problem is if he stays……… When a player think that he has more importance than the team, that team HAS a big problem……….When you have this amount of ego in your locker room you are in trouble……..So please report when he is gone……beers are on me…..

    ————-

    Why? It made total sense.

He said that Arians can fix the offensive flow between the 2 if DJax is here. The question is can he make DJax want to be here?

  24. Alanbucsfan Says:

    They have the meeting…
If Arians likes what he heard and DJax accepts what Arians tells him,
then they move to the next step – practice field.
Then, training camp and pre season will determine if it will work.

You’re not going to trade him unless DJax approves of where he’s going (not necessarily by contract, but by DJax desire to play for that team)
Arians recognizes his talent is worth giving the situation a chance to work.
Yes, last year was dysfunction- but most of that is on last year’s coaches. Koetter was a nice guy, blah, blah, he sucked as head coach.

Free agency, draft coming up, no need to get rid of anyone unless they make it clear they don’t want to be here or Arians doesn’t want them.
DJax didn’t want to play for old regime anymore, the fact that he’s meeting with Arians shows his mind hasn’t been made up yet.
Diva? Sure, but the man can be electric on the field.

  25. Couch Fan Says:

I understand what you are trying to say. FreeWee and Djack@ss dont fit into that category. Neither were/are hard workers. Both are mental midgets. At least FreeWee had no problems practicing.

Theres a difference between Tired of losing, Tired of losing and not working hard, and Tired of losing, not working hard and being a locker room cancer. DJack@ass is the latter. No team should want that. Specially not a team like ours who is full of young players still learning how to win.

I dont understand how you can be so fond of such a lazy player both mentally and physically.

Joe , I get the point you are trying to make about this being a big story , but come on man you are wasting valuable time and space on this site constantly kicking this dead horse.you know how the bucs overused muscle hamster and used him for too long ? You are doing the same with this djax crap ! This guy will not be in a nice uniform this coming season & I would bet.money on that so start talking about players who should replace this fool or atleast start bashing djax for being who he is instead of just making it a story about him every friggen day ! I think I’m just going to find another bucs site to invest my time in if you keep this crap up ! WE GET IT

  30. Whatinthebuchappend Says:

When the time comes that he is released or traded or stays a buc for sure , go ahead and say something about it but everything else is just garbage.hot garbage that is starting to stink this joint up

  32. gary Says:

How about Jackson, Barber and 2nd round pick for Gurley

  33. JimmyJack Says:

Very simple. Let Djax do what he wants. If he want to be a Buc and do what Bruce wants then you give him the roster spot.

If he don’t wanna be here you release him. Or trade if you can.

  34. Darin Says:

Havnt heard from Clayton in years. Love that Anthrax, Megadeath loving mommas boy. My guess is Djax is gone. Cant badmouth trade bait. There are guys who run a 4.3 in the draft who can be on the team for a tenth of the cap hit. Or John Brown would come less than half price. The Oline is gona need a 20-40 mil upgrade. Much more important to have some nasty olinemen than a diva receiver who wants to be elsewhere. Adios.

    _______

Yeah he proved it for 2 games, Fitz started like what? 5 more games after that? And neither of those two did anything worth mentioning. Also don’t forget Fitz threw 4 picks targeting Djax after that mirage that games one and two turned out to be. Winston Threw another 3 picks targeting mister low effort. Trade Djax to a team that sucks and let him deal with that.

And it won’t work here. Let this malcontent walk or trade him but we need to move on. Unhappy diva wide receivers never work out. He is showing his hand six months before the season even starts. Get lost Djax.

@ Larry you are correct and so can the exact opposite!!!

  40. stpetebucsfan Says:

DJAX got half of his 774 yards in the first four games of he season. He needed 12 games to match that. Why?

It wasn’t JW…remember JW got benched in favor of FitzMagic for some of those games. DJAX just wasn’t a big factor after those first four games. In the final five games DJAX got just 180 yards combined when JW was playing his best ball of the season.

Hump put up better numbers and is not afraid of contact like DJAX.

He does keep a safety out of the box…he is fast…but he doesn’t block…doesn’t fight for the ball and DC’s adjusted after that fast start and took him out of the games.

He’s just not worth 10 million on the Bucs…perhaps the Rams but not the Bucs. We are loaded with targets…pushing the salary cap and DJAX is a LUXURY we simply cannot afford.

    I totally agree with Joe…..

“In Joe’s eyes, it might just be better to use Jackson’s cash to keep Adam Humphries and go buy John Brown, who runs as fast as Jackson and has about the same 2018 stats and far less drama and hand-wringing”

  41. Anonymous Says:

    Bring him back!!

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    People are forgetting something here:

It doesn’t matter what Desean Jackson wants or doesn’t want. He is under contract. What is he going to do? Sit out the season if they don’t set him free? Not at his age.

Unless he is willing to retire, DJax must do whatever the Bucs decide to do.

Let’s say they decide to keep him…he throws a tantrum and decides to under produce to get even. The Bucs can deactivate him like they did Keyshawn.

So there doesn’t have to be a mending of fences. DJax either goes with the flow or he suffers for it. The Bucs could easily trade him to another team that has no chance of success for a 7th rounder, just to get rid of his salary and stick it to him for being an idiot.

And, Joe, DJax is not the deep threat you give him credit to be. Most of his success came from yards after catch in short to medium passes, and he has always needed a high volume of opportunities in order to produce.

Personally, I say call Jon Gruden. The man wanted Keyshawn. The man wanted Galloway. He’ll chomp at the bit to get DJax. Take a late pick this year and a better pick next year for him.

  43. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    stpetebucsfan said it perfectly.

  44. tnew Says:

Two wildly different personality types with Winston and Djax. Monken was on to Jackson WAY early when he said Djax was here just for the money. Shame nobody listened and nobody remembered.

  45. D1 Says:

For underwear football, it was close to the perfect play. Already one could sense a chemistry that has developed between Jameis and Jackson, to which the lightning fast receiver didn’t deny.

“Oh, yeah! We put in a lot of hard work this offseason,” Jackson said. “We are ready to move forward. This is where it counts.”

Of course, one can only get so much from underwear football. As Bill Belicheat said this week, in underwear football, receivers are not jammed at the line, to cite one example. Monday, pads are scheduled to go on and Jackson is looking forward to it.

“Yeah, that’s part of the process,” Jackson said. “The focus to be great, [training campp] is where it starts. We are excited about the opportunity and we will put in the work. “
    ============================================================================

The above quote is from JBF .

I’m posting it because it would seem to indicate that DJax and Winston did work on chemistry. Chemistry ie relationship is something Winston requires to be effective with a reciever. This fact was reported on in another jbf article.

So it appears that DJAX was willing to put the work in with Winston. That work apparently was productive as the article reports. Which points to a falling out between winston and djax during the season, not prior. I’ve seen many people extrapolate DJax comments about practice
on Friday into his approach all the time. The article from JBF archives would indicate that the timing issue seemed to work.

Theres another quote from koetter in the quotedraft article that Koetter had a cut up of plays where DJax was open and winston didn’t attempt to get him the ball. As jameis himself has admitted the obligation to fix things is on him not djax.

Personally, I believe it’s time to part with djax.I’m merely pointing out the issue isn’t all one-sided and isn’t because of djax unwilling to practice. Which means perhaps BA can mediate this rift and we end up with DJax another year.
