Final Arians Watch; “Negotiations” Myth

January 8th, 2019

Joe’s had great laughs at the various reports of the Bucs starting contract negotiations as early as today with heir apparent head coach Bruce Arians.

Yeah, sure, because nobody talked money or terms in detail before Arians flew to Tampa and disrobed for various medical testing at a local hospital.

“Jason, we’ll talk money and coaching budget after my prostate exam. Right?”

Heck, the average Joe wouldn’t take a freakin’ urine test for a basic office job before talking about pay and benefits.

Joe’s not sure if this is just reporters being naive or what. But to think a 66-year-old, retired two-time NFL Coach of the Year wouldn’t pre-negotiate his important terms before submitting to medical procedures is just silly. That’s not how the business world works.

Regardless, NFL.com and others are reporting now that the Bucs have opened their arms for Arians and just have to work out details.

It’s exciting. Joe will get crazy excited when Arians takes a pen and signs his contract, or the Bucs or someone highly credible announces it’s a 100 percent completed deal.

For now, use the comments section to share all your thoughts on Arians. Keep it clean and friendly.

Arains best coach since gruden!! We finally get a real coach and staff

  2. aceinthehole Says:

I would guess he is filing out the coaching staff before the official announcement is made.

  3. Tony LA Says:

Smartest move the Glazer kids have EVER made.
    There is no close second.

This is literally their first smart football move.

    Waiting for Freddie???

  6. Pete I Says:

66 year old retread with health issues who brought his doctor to the interview. And a wife who was done with being a coaches wife last January.

There are many negotiations that had to occur it would seem.

    This is a bucs thing…

    What is plan B?

  7. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Excited as I’ve always liked/respected Arians…still a bit gun-shy given Parcells/Jimmy Johnson “jilting the Bucs at the altar.”

  8. Pete I Says:

I wish him well, hope it works out. Nothing else the Glazer kids have done for the Bucs or ManU has so far.

  9. Phil Says:

If he doesn’t sign the contract for a while can Jameis go over to Bruce’s house and workout with him until Bruce signs the contract. Maybe we can get a head start on the season. I know Jameis doesn’t mind doing extra work.

  10. tnew Says:

Almost time to post the “A Football Life” episode of Bruce Arians.

  11. james west Says:

    yeah when is the announcement

  12. Jason Says:

As much as I want Arians to bring this team back to the promise land, I hope he changes the culture of this team above all else. Get rid of players that aren’t fully invested or whining about how much they are making. If he does nothing else as our head coach, at the very least do that.

  13. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Meh

Wake me when it’s pre season

This is the too long boring off season where media types endlessly debate their opinions and nothing is done football wise

  14. The Real Malloy Says:

    James West,

Same James West that went to St. Ceceilias?

  15. Dlavid Says:

Hope is on the way …….. again !

  16. Defense Rules Says:

@Deminion … “Arains best coach since gruden!! We finally get a real coach and staff.” Not to burst anyone’s bubble Deminion, but Arian’s record with the Bucs is exactly 0 wins, 0 losses, 0 ties. Actually that IS a better record than our other coaches, but nonetheless. And oh ya, since we have no verification that he’s been offered the job or accepted the job, we have no way of knowing what his staff will look like IF he’s offered the HC job and IF he accepts it.

Two things intrigue me right now about this potential hire. One … will Bruce Arians be hired as the Big Kahuna (much like Bill Parcells would’ve been IF he’d actually accepted). Two … what WILL his coaching staff look like and will it be designed with a successor in mind.

So many questions, so few answers. Oh wait, this is Bucsville. That’s our heritage. Why would we expect any different.

  17. Dooshlarue Says:

I’m very excited and I think it will end up being a great hire.
Bowles and his 3-4 flex……I like that too.

And Jason, please tell Bruce you need his help when selecting our next RB.

    Go Bucs!!

  18. BlogTalkFootball Says:

    Negotiations…
Bruce: I want enough money for my family to live a life of luxury after I am gone.

Glazers: Wait! What? You planning on dying?

  20. John Says:

I have been one of Winston’s most outspoken critics on joebucsfan. I was not happy when they drafted him. I’m a Gator fan and what I saw in Winston was WAY TOO MANY turnovers WHEN HE FACED GOOD DEFENSES…. Believe me, his being a Seminole meant nothing ( I was (still am) a huge D. Brooks fan). Anyway, his rookie season I said “well, he’s our QB, the people at one buc place know WAY more than I’ll ever know about talent so I’ll support their decision and hope he can protect the ball”. This past season (2018) the turnovers drove me CRAZY!!! MY CURRENT POSITION IS: With Arains as the Head Coach Winston couldn’t have a better person to guide him to be an elite QB. (Hell, he doesn’t have to be elite, just protect the ball and get the ball in the play makers hands)… JUST DON’T COST THE TEAM possessions/games by making bone-headed decisions and turning the ball over….
With a full off season and the 2019 season we should all know by December (really by mid October) if Winston can get past his “ball protection issues” or if he simply “can’t get it”…. HOPEFULLY the new coach will do wonders for him and we’ll have a QB for years who’s a household name (in a positive manner). ONE THING FOR CERTAIN (barring an early season injury) we will know if Winston is a true #1 QB by the end of the year… GO BUC’s…..

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If you watched “Bruce Arians, A Football Life” Youtube….

You would have seen the part about Bear Bryant offering him a job which he accepted…..when he got home his wife asked “How much are they paying you?” He stated….”I don’t know, I didn’t ask”…

So, it’s possible he was so excited about coaching “America’s QB” that he didn’t ask the pay…….

  22. BucEmUp Says:

cmon man this is horsecrap just get it done!!!!!!

  23. 813bucboi Says:

how much left does he have in the tank?….3years…4years….

    he’s a great coach….should be a quick turn around….

i expect at least 10wins and playoffs next year……surely he doesnt need 3-4 years….other coaches with lesser experience have turned it around in 1 offseason…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  24. Tick Says:

If he does sign does that make him Bucco Bruce??

  25. Frank Pillow Says:

I’ve gone back and watched the Amazon/All or Nothing on the Cards ‘15 seasons… if you don’t come away from those episodes wanting a coach like Arians and a team like that, you’re nuts. They guy nails the Xs and Os perfectly and better still the pulse of his team. He drops f bombs Chucky style and hold players accountable- all while balancing being focused and loose. It’s a fun viewing for insights into Bruce’s style.

  26. John Says:

If Arians like to fish and/or people watch “Beautiful” women on the beach/water then Tampa is the place!!!!!!! And get roughly $10 million a year for doing so!!!! I WANT JOB TOO Jason….. lol

  27. JimBuc2 Says:

Team Glazer has about six hours before DJT steals their thunder.

  28. Robert Says:

Im excited about getting him. I have no use for JW though..

  29. JJV Says:

Yesterday the Bucs questioned Bruce about his prostate. The team doctor said ” I think you’re lying. There is a hole in your story, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. ” Off to the hospital they went but before the exam began, they requested a second opinion. So two fingers were used during the exam. After the prostate exam, the doctor left. Then the nurse came into the room.At that point, she whispered the 5 words no man wants to hear: “Who the heck was that?”
that is the reason now for the delay according to my sources. And I’ m sticking to it!

  30. SOEbuc Says:

I’ve been this contract has already been signed and he’s making phone calls to coaches.

THEY DON’T HAVE ANY INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED AT THE MOMENT AND HAVE ONLY INTERVIEWED FOUR SO FAR, INCLUDING ARIANS!

Things in a lock box just waiting. With so much excitement, your source saying no later than Tuesday better be right Joe, or I’m kicking your arse 🙂

  31. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Loyal, waiting to hear who the head coach is pretty big stuff for fans. A good head coach can be much more important than a first round draft pick. I would say it is on par with an entire draft class if you get a good one. I don’t mind reading the articles about this but at this point I want to get it confirmed and move on to turning this franchise around for good.

  32. JimmyJack Says:

Been down this road before. This is not going to end well.

The only reason for a delay is because he’s backing out!!!!! I think if this thing aren’t wrapped up by 4 we are doomed……..again.

    Dammitt!!!!

  33. SOEbuc Says:

    Tick

“If he does sign does that make him Bucco Bruce??”

I want to come back with some bada$$ new creamsicles and the original white, Bruce helmets.

  34. T REX Says:

Actually, it would be stupid to begin contract negotiations without making sure he can actually bargain in good faith. I think you have it backwards.

  35. Todd Says:

THIS is why Jason Licht didn’t get fired.

And honestly, I’m glad he didn’t. He now has something to prove and has a consummate pro coach leading him.

  36. Tut Says:

I think they want to announce the main staff all at once. (HC, DC, OC) I wounder if there is a medical clause in the contract just to be safe???

  37. AlBuc44 Says:

Arians is coming here for a check …. just like the last 4 bums… Arians is an old washed out never was … never made a superbowl appearance… 1 playoff win … Like are YOU GUYS CRAZY ? Dude is 67 !!! How are we supposed to build for the future ? This is ridiculous… its madness … its a Bucs Life … and I wont be around much longer if they make this hire … Im sick of it … sick of this organizations mistakes for 12 years … we have become a joke … and guys are coming in and just using Bucs as a pay day now

  38. 813bucboi Says:

@Defense Rules we finally get a real coach and football mind in Tampa think about it we have had a rag tag bunch of coaches and staff since gruden…

  40. Robert Says:

there aint thay many coaches, let alone 1/2 arse, let alone BA who would sign on with crabman.

they’ll do what they have to. it’s a done deal. no one else wants crabman

  41. D-Rome Says:

Agreed Joe. Even I wouldn’t waste time with a job interview if I didn’t know what the compensation would be.

  42. 813bucboi Says:

    jmmyjack

maybe he wants todd to be his DC and successor but the glazers rather have kris richard as DC and successor…..

maybe that physical showed something they didnt like…..

maybe his wife said i rather live in NYC…..

still time for your dreams to come true….lol…

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  43. SOEbuc Says:

    BR and Jenna Laine

“I’m told that there has been a push for Jim Caldwell, although he was not among the Bucs’ reported list of interviews.”

Don’t pull a Glazer kids, Glazer kids. Smh. “IT’S NOT A TUMOR!”

  44. Lord Cornelius Says:

813 – if there is one long term angle to Arians as a benefit over Richards, it’d be the potential development of Jameis Winston.

If Arians can transform him into a consistent top 10 QB that stays in Tampa another 10-15 years then his coaching legacy will carry on and keep this team competitive in a way it has never been historically over the course of any one decade.

Not saying Richards can’t do the same for Winston with a good staff in theory – but it is much more of an unknown – vs this being what BA is known for.

And hell he loves Jameis lol. That kind of support/confidence will be good going into next season.

Yes I’m a big winston-the-player homer. I have one more year to go all in basically haha

  45. Joseph Mamma Says:

“Jason, we’ll talk money and coaching budget after my prostate exam. Right?”

The contract talks have staled because Arians is asking for a lifetime supply of FloMax included in his deal.

  46. AlteredEgo Says:

I heard the rumored is Bruce is having trouble creating more than 3 screen names on JBF…..

  47. B Says:

    Got to get the hat!

  48. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

John, great post about JW and what we hope can be for him. I am on the record. I do believe in Jameis. And i feel Arians is the perfect coach to find his best.

For MANY reasons, i feel Bruce Arians is the man for this job, and i am excited about it.

    Lets get it DONE.

  49. Buc407 Says:

    No later than Tuesday joe??

  50. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

JimmyJack,, yes we have been down this road too many times. Keep the faith, brother! Lets get it done.

  51. Clodhopper Says:

Getting too excited too soon is begging to be disappointed. Never forget that disappoinent is part of our tradition!!!

  52. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

Wasn’t it stated that today would be the day that they announce the new coach?

  53. Rod Munch Says:

The longer this drags out… the less I think it’s going to happen. I mean why the hold up at this point if there wasn’t already a deal in place and the health report card was good?

  54. pelbuc Says:

I’ve liked BA since he was OC for the Steelers.Hope Bucs close the deal soon. Best hire since Gruden as long as a succession plan in place in case he can’t finish his contract. Hope he hasn’t lost the energy and that his coaching staff is legit. Now it’s time to start gutting the roster and removing all the malcontents and overpaid players. Keep Humphries and get rid of D. Smith, GMC, DJack, Curry, Unrein, Gholston to start.

  55. DILLIGAF Says:

“Ok Bruce, bend over and touch your toes. I’m gonna show you where the wild goose goes”

Arians would have signed today, however, Tampa General lacked a Geiger Counter of sufficient sensitivity to measure minute traces of radiation, possibly emanating from Arian’s Anus.
Radioactive Beads are one way to treat/cure Prostrate Cancer, besides actual removal of the Prostrate.

  60. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

And YES, who knows, maybe a return to the original uniforms is just what the doctor ordered… but maybe keep the skull n sword logo for the helmets.

Pretty sure I saw him in town today. I’m not joking. I was jogging and thought I saw him going by in a nice jag.

Would be nice to have him and not Mr. Turnover McCrotchGrabby.

  68. VFL98 Says:

I heard from a reliable source that the hold up is from the NFL. They are trying to get him an electric scooter to have on the sideline during games. Hopefully that will get approved soon.

  69. VFL98 Says:

I heard from a reliable source that the hold up is that they are trying to get the NFL to approve an electric scooter for BA to have on the sidelines for when he gets tired.

  70. JimmyJack Says:

Clodhopper and pelbuc are right .

If this thing don’t go down in the next few mins there’s an obvisous delay. Delays happen for a reason & the reason has to be his backing out. Anthoer HC canidate to s**t all over Buc fans faces.

I think I’m going to hurl.

  71. TexBuc Says:

Arians has known Winston since his high school days. Bruce knows Winston’s HS football coach and he gotten to know Winston during his football camps he conducted in Birmingham, AL. Bruce has publicly declared how highly he thinks of Winston as a QB and has stated his desire to coach him one day.

Combined with his working experience with Licht his interest in the Bucs makes sense.

  72. VFL98 Says:

I heard from a reliable source that the hold up is that Arians is wanting to bring his electric scooter for his use on the sidelines during the games but the NFL has to approve it first.

  73. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Bucco Bruce… exactly!!! I mean, we must go back to the original uniforms, right?? But which helmet emblam? Original… or skull and swords?

  74. DBS Says:

It’s a case of who’s sources were correct most likely. One said One thing the other’s said no time line. Just a matter of who gets to look like the fool.

  75. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Pelbuc

Martin Fennelly agrees with you. It’s not about BA’s heart or prostate or health….it’s about his fire. Like you he just hopes BA has his energy back and his battery recharged after the time off.

Or as Fennelly says…he just hopes BA is “all in”. Fennelly is positive IF BA really wants this.

  76. VFL98 Says:

I heard they are negotiating if he they can provide an electric scooter for his use during the games. Maybe Glazers don’t want to spend the extra $ for that and that is why they haven’t hired him yet.

  77. Buc believer Says:

A Tuesday hire huh Joe?? Well you do have 7 hours and 55 minutes left.

  78. JimmyJack Says:

If this hire was going to be made official today you gotta believe it would be done by now.

I guess it’s sloppy seconds for Our Bucs once again.

  79. 813bucboi Says:

    LC

i think many are underestimating winston…..

imo, he doesnt need a QB whisper…..he needs a defense….

all the teams that won over the weekend had good defenses…..they didnt have an air it out passing attack…..

winston has shown he can be a franchis qb imo…..a term solution would be creating a defense that will last as long as the bucs in their hay day…or the ravens…or seattle…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  80. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

  83. Defense Rules Says:

Kudos on the title here Joe … “Negotiations Myth” hit it right on the nose. The Bucs (and Glazer Boyz) are in no position to negotiate anything with a highly-experienced, big-name coach like Bruce Arians. For one thing, BA is RETIRED (by all reports I’ve read, Bucs sought HIM out; not vice versa). I seriously doubt that money is a driving factor, and from what I’ve read, his wife doesn’t really want him to coach anymore. Plus, WE’RE the ones who sport a 10-22 record in the past 2 years, a 27-53 record in the past 5 years, and a 55-105 record in the past 10 years with zero playoff appearances (not exactly a history of winning one might say). And oh ya, a team that by most accounts would be considered a hot mess (with lots of holes & not all THAT much money to fix them with).

Nah, Bruce Arians is in the driver’s seat in this scenario. IF he signs on (which sounds like a foregone conclusion), my question now is ‘WHY?’ What’s the driving motivation in his case? My gut feel is that you can’t change the leopard’s spots; he is who he is. BA is a big-time competitor, and retirement didn’t give him the challenges that he NEEDS as a competitor. The Bucs represent that challenge and I personally doubt there’ll be much ‘negotiating’ IF he accepts the challenge. I for one hope that he does; Bucs need an adult in the room to provide a vision and direction.

  99. Defense Rules Says:

@813bucboi … “i think many are underestimating winston. imo, he doesnt need a QB whisper…..he needs a defense.” Nobody could disagree with that bucboi; EVERY QB (and team) NEEDS a defense. And EVERY QB (and team) NEEDS balance in their attack, which means they NEED a running game to complement a passing attack. And oh ya, EVERY QB (and team) NEEDS a solid OLine to protect said QB & punch holes for the running game to succeed.

Would Jameis be better IF he had an improved OLine, running game AND defense? I would sure hope so. But given this little thing called a CAP, how much $$$ can we afford to put into each? IMHO bucboi, teams today can’t ‘buy their way out of problems’. Everyone has the same CAP, and everyone has the same 53-man roster to feed. That to me is where MANAGEMENT and COACHING comes in. Teams that are cellar-dwellers tend to suck at both IMO. And yes, our beloved Bucs have become cellar-dwellers (again) over the past 10 years. Fix the management & coaching and we have a chance to change that. HOPEFULLY Bruce Arians is the guy who can git er done.

  100. TBTeddy Says:
