Dirk Koetter Takes Over The Atlanta Offense

January 9th, 2019

Fishing at his South Tampa waterfront home and eating Bit-O-Honey is not on the to-do list for Dirk Koetter.

The ol’ ball coach became the new offensive coordinator for the Falcons yesterday, a job he held before leaving for the Bucs in January 2015.

Ironically, Koetter took over for Mike Mularkey as playcaller for Matt Ryan in 2012. And yesterday Mularkey was re-hired by the Falcons to coach tight ends. … And they’ll all work together with Raheem Morris, Falcons assistant head coach who has been serving as their offensive passing game coordinator.

Good for Koetter. He’s one of the few men in NFL history to coordinate top-10 offenses with three different franchises. This is a role in which he excels. Hopefully, the Bucs will have better cornerbacks when Koetter gets the chance to test them.

At least he’ll know Brent Grimes won’t be shadowing Julio Jones. He’s not paid enough for that.

Good video below on Koetter from Falcons coach Dan Quinn.

    Best of luck Dirk!

  2. lambchop Says:

The Falcons are building a good staff. They should rebound next season.

  3. Iron Wombat Says:

Total yards don’t count Joe. Ryan will throw for nearly 20 INT. If I recall correctly during Koetter’s last stint in Atlanta people were openly wondering if Matt Ryan had his best years behind him. Chances are Quinn can’t fix the defense this year and the whole lot of them get fired.

Really liked Dirk. Wish he would have taken us to the promise land. Glad he landed on his feet.

    Not paid enough?!???

    F Brent Grimes F’n p#$y

Scared to cover someone (not shut down but just cover) while he’s getting paid $10 million dollars?!!!

Man he gots to go, and take McCoy with him, this soft weak mentality is why Bucs are a laughing stock.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Good for Koetter…..it’s probably the right job for him…..he is a good guy….just not HC material. And, at least he has a good kicker…..who Mark Dominick let go for no good reason.

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

    He’ll be DC twice a year….

  8. DB55 Says:

Lol. Falcon fans are like greeeeaaaat! More bubble screens. YEY!!!

  9. Not there yet Says:

It’s not like Koetter knows anything about the defense anyway so it’ll be fine

  10. 813bucboi Says:

he’ll be easy to stop in the redzone….lol….his offense is too predictable….

    #DEFENSEWINSCHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

Wish him the best, but I won’t miss him.

  12. Waterboy Says:

Mike Mularkey should be their run game coordinator.

“Oh Sh** ! Not him again”

INDEED!!! Can we all say…Greedy Williams? Draft him and the defensive backfield suddenly becomes potent for years to come.

  15. Joel Says:

Matt Ryan has had 3 losing season – most recent was 2018 at 7-9.

The other two times, the Falcons went 4-12 and 6-10. His offensive coordinator?

    Dirk Koetter. Good luck, Falcons.

Do us all a favor and hire Mike Smith as your DC.

p%**y brent grimes could never ever be a real MAN who could have gone out with respect but he had to open his loud mouth now everybody will see him as a coward. what do you expect when your mommy fights your battles

  17. Not Americas QB Says:

I believe Dirk never wanted to be HC he was happy as OC. So good for Dirk, I am sure this is bad news for us.

  18. zzbuc Says:

respect and gratitude forever Coach Koetter!!! Wish you nothing but the best (except against us)

  19. Buc You Says:

Freeman & Coleman are gonna be pissed. No running in the 2nd half lol!

  20. Pickgrin Says:

I’m sure the Glazers aren’t too upset about this – because it almost certainly means they will not have to pay Dirk as much to not coach this year. Whatever Dirk is earning as OC in 2019 likely gets subtracted from the amount the Glazers still owe him for the 4th year of his contract.

I’m glad for Koetter because he obviously wants to work – but I’d have taken a year off, pocket a few million, recharge batteries, spend time w/ family etc if I had been in his position. There would have been plenty of good offers for Dirk in 2020 if he had decided to take the year off…

I just wish he had gone to a team outside of our division….

Coach K is pretty good at figuring out the other teams defensive weaknesses and attacking those. And after 4 years here in Tampa Bay – he knows our defensive weaknesses pretty damn well I’d say. He should – its basically what got him a losing record as a HC and then fired….

Of course the defense itself will be completely different – but a # of the same players will still be here when the Bucs play the Falcons twice next year – and the next year…

  21. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Atlanta will now be the only NFC South team to rival the Saints. Book it.

  22. TonyC Says:

“Book” what? That you’re trolling this site? The Bucs are going to “to win the division” book it.

  23. TonyC Says:

Boy you guys are absolutely amazing. You’re worried about “poor old Dirk” whose getting a ridiculous amount of money to do what he was replaced for in Tampa. I’m certainly glad he’s gone and looking forward to kicking the Falcon’s ass twice next year.

    grammatical error ^^^'(who’s)
