Debating Brian Kelly

January 3rd, 2019

Deserving candidate?

Shoot, Team Glazer isn’t even trying, and already BSPN is proving them right.

Joe, outside of a once or twice a year reference to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, cannot remember “Pardon the Interruption” ever discussing the Bucs. But in a segment Wednesday, both Jameis and Brian Kelly were discussed. In the same segment.

Team Glazer likes splash when making a coaching hire. So after David Haugh of WSCR-AM 670 The Score and the Chicago Tribune noted the search firm Team Glazer hired to help them find a successor to Dirk Koetter was pushing Kelly to the Bucs. Haugh also reported the search firm said Team Glazer was willing to cut a check of $10 million a year to find the right guy.

Led by Michael Wilbon, the PTI folks debate if Kelly is a right fit for the Bucs and Jameis.

So here is an example that proves Team Glazer right. Kelly brings splash, sizzle that will generate buzz across the land. And Kelly hasn’t even spoken to Team Glazer or Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht yet, to the best of Joe’s knowledge.

(And this is also why Team Glazer is keeping Jameis for 2019. Without Jameis, what kind of identity do the Bucs have? Who moves the needle?)

    Every Bucs fan should be greatful of not being named on one of the worst Sports show in the history of humanity!!!!! Sorry…..confirmed…is the worst sports show in history……….

  2. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    Off topic but kwon and LVD are tweeting some pretty interesting messages.

  3. StoutGospel Says:

    Moving the needle…..JOHN HARBAUGH! TEAM GLAZER go get it done!!

    Worst case, rather have Arians than Brian Kelly by far.

  4. zzbuc Says:

    1Gr8Buc……what are they texting?

  5. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

    Its “Wilbon”, but man how craxy would it be if kelly comes here and there is an opening at ND, with Urban Liar available immediately!?

  6. 813bucboi Says:

    we dont need splash, buzz and sizzle….we need development, production and wins!!!!!

    KRIS RICHARD 4 HC!!!!!

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….#ADIOSDIRK!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  7. Architek Says:

    If the Bucs get Kelly IMOUT I swear IMOUT.

  8. Joe Blahak Says:

    Bucs need a culture change and ability to develop young players. This guy would be an awesome hire. Nothing but successful programs. The job he did in Cincinatti stands out.

  9. micronole Says:

    Maybe Kelly reminds the Glazers too much of Schiano.

  10. Bobby M. Says:

    Again…they are throwing out $10 million to Kelly to see if another prospect will come around or show interest. If Kelly might get $10 million….Saban or Jim Harbaugh might perk up to see what their value would be….Maybe $12-$15 million? I believe if Kelly were really offered a 5 yr/$50 million guaranteed contract….He would already have stepped down at Notre Dame.

    There’s nobody from the Bucs or Kelly’s side confirming any of this….so to me this is classic PR 101 for gauging interest. Kelly is okay with it because it puts pressure on Notre Dame to sweeten his deal….The Bucs dangle a carrot to see if any other “college coaches” perk up.

  11. SOEbuc Says:

    Noooooooooooo!!! This isn’t an independent NCAA league.

  12. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    No way! I think it’s BA

  13. bucsnole Says:

    NO MORE ROOKIE NFL HCs PLEASE!!!!!!
    We need a proven winner

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Why do we need to make this coaching change all about Jameis?

    Even Licht saying he will be here next year doesn’t mean that can’t change with a new coach…..I can guarantee you if the right coach is hired, he will have the authority to make changes…..or, he wasn’t the right coach.

    I think keeping Jameis for 2019 is the right decision…..but forcing him down a coach’s throat beyond that doesn’t make sense….

  15. TrollSlayer Says:

    please no— i actually like kelly but not for here im confused that more people wouldnt be excited for the possibility of a guy like eric bienemy or george edwards i know they are not splashy hires and dont have the HC pedigree but neither did tony dungy and see how that resulted? bruce arians wouldnt bother me either but please no to kelly and really no to the harbaugh brothers too good coaches but not meant for tampa i believe

  16. Troy Says:

    Brian Kelly is actually a very good coach. With that said, I have no clue how he’d be in the NFL. People who think he’s another Schiano are clueless. He’s a different animal and has a good relationship with his players. If he’s the best choice, I’m all in. If not, let’s get the best guy in here.

  17. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    ZZ: Kwon said whatever team he is on next year they are going to the playoffs. LVD posted something like love and blessings with kwon and dsmith replying kinda like they all know something.

  18. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

    Only successful recent college coach in NFL right now is Pete Carroll…….please take lessons from Saban and Spurrier…

  19. Not there yet Says:

    Tired of hearing the glazers want to make a splash because they are the worst owners in the nfl right now. Making a splash Just makes them sound desperate for news and it’s pathetic to continue to lead the news cycle in your off-season. Want to have the football world talking about your team how about making sure you hire a guy who will win games.

  20. Buccernutter Says:

    Multiple reports are saying that Kelly is not a candidate.

  21. Stevbobucsfan Says:

    Again, I think the bucs need to go with Arians and he bring in 2 top notch coordinators in which 1 will take over for Arians after 2 to 3 years. I think the compensation would be a lot less than comp. For Harbaugh especially now the Dolphins have ask the Ravens about him. Also Arians winning record is pretty impressive I do like Harbaugh

  22. Joe Says:

    Only successful recent college coach in NFL right now is Pete Carroll

    Who was an NFL coach before he took over USC.

  23. Eric Says:

    Haven’t seen Kelly come out and deny it , “I am happy at Notre Dame”, etc.

  24. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Korn-Ferry consultant firm will decide the new Head Coach for the 2019 Buc season

    Its funny when the Sheep is wondering who Jason Gump will pick

    Team Glazer has no faith in Gump picking the right HC

    Team Glazer is p!ssed off of the horrid past draft and not getting…

    DERWIN JAMES

    leading up to last years draft, there was absolutely no other team that was matched with a player than James with the Bucs. EVERY MOCK had James as a Buc. numerous interviews James stated to other city team reporters that they would have to jump Tampa to get him. Gump told the Glazers James was a Buc, however

    Gump, wanted to be cute and draft day told Glazers he was going to trade down but still at the #12 position picked Velcro over James

    Derwin James is the reason Korn-Ferry is picking the HC

    **Gump is still here because VV played alittle better at the end of the season”

    Jay-Miss doesn’t move the needle. The thousands of empty seats in the Den of Depression tell me so.

  26. ChanEpic Says:

    @813 – HEAR HEAR!

  27. Eric Says:

    Then again the pro offenses now are much more “college like” than before.

    Brady recently stated that pro football offenses have become glorified college offenses. Spread offenses and such.

    Kelly might fit right in.

  28. ChanEpic Says:

    @Joe(s), can we setup a donation to get you the software that will allow us to block certain, broken record, dumb arsed Joe Bucs Fan commentators? Or maybe even just let people see : “Dumb comment about McCoy and/or Jameis” when the same people post the same crap we’ve seen them post for years? I’ll contribute to the upgrading of the JBF comment system and I am sure others will too.

  29. Bucsdelight Says:

    No thanks. It doesn’t work and ND wasn’t good.

  30. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Before the JW and Mariota draft, Kelly perferred Jameis over MM. JW beat kelley during that season and thought highly of JW.

    HUGE DECISION ON KELLEY is

    when will college football go 8 team playoffs. Kelley knows because the egg they displayed this year, even a undefeated season he might not get in the 4 team playoff again.

    if NCAA decides they will stick with the 4 team playoff, Kelley will jump ship to the Bucs”

    Kobe Faker

  31. Cobraboy Says:

    What about the numerous reports that the Kelly-Bucs thing is pure rumor based on zero facts?

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bobby M. Says
    “Again…they are throwing out $10 million to Kelly…”

    Pure media speculation. But if they are willing to shell out money like that…they should go after Jim Harbaugh and hit a home run.

    1Gr8Buc Says
    “Kwon said whatever team he is on next year they are going to the playoffs. LVD posted something like love and blessings with kwon and dsmith replying kinda like they all know something.”

    I just read everything they said. I think you are making something out of nothing.

  33. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

    The only upside to a Brian Belly hiring for me is that it might finally break my unhealthy addiction to the Bucs…

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ChanEpic Says
    “@Joe(s), can we setup a donation to get you the software that will allow us to block certain, broken record, dumb arsed Joe Bucs Fan commentators?”

    Only message board software offers that to all users. Joe uses WordPress…which is one of the best around…but I’ve used it a lot and I have never found one that let’s regular users block seeing comments by other regular users. Only Admin can filter them out. Unfortunately.

    However, there are several options to like or dislike comments. Wouldn’t really help, but I’ve been wanting that for years here.

  35. Bucsace Says:

    Has there ever been a ND head coach who was successful in the NFL?

  36. Eric Says:

    Kelly may realize that due to the academic standards at ND he just can’t win a championship there.

    Plus when he does get a good player a lot of them get kicked out because they can’t maintain a GPA.

    BAMA, UF, FSU, etc have no such issues.

  37. Stevbobucsfan Says:

    My question on B Kelly is, has he had any leadership positions in the NFL.like OC or DC. I don’t know much about Kelly. Bucs fans please enlighten me. What I do know is, there haven’t been a lot of college coaches that has been successful in the NFL without being a HC. OC or DC in the NFL

  38. Frank Pillow Says:

    I can’t help but believe the Kelly thing is a combination of smoke and at best Kelly’s able to get a little more cash from ND out of it. I don’t think the Harbaugh thing is viable either- why the hell would their ownership ditch a coach who has demonstrated an uncanny ability to adjust-big time- and win with a rookie QB? They are a very good football team right now and shouldn’t be dismissed as being able to make a deep run.

    Kirby Smart- a name mentioned in a previous article- might just be a guy their looking for. A dynamic leader and excellent talent evaluator. At the very least, he’s run a big time program, has an excellent pedigree and the chops to succeed at the NFL level.

    At this point everyone not named Arians is going to have the same issue- they’re projections, whereas Bruce is a proven commodity. How does Smart project as compared to Richard, Bienemy, Flores, etc?

  39. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    Bonzai: If it was nothing then why did Kwon feel the need to delete the tweet???

  40. Steven Levy Says:

    Joe, just FYI, but Pardon the Interruption has never once referenced “America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston”. Never. Now have they referenced Bucs QB Jameis Winston? Perhaps. Likely due to an off the field matter but maybe including on the field matters as well. Just thought that correction was pertinent.

  41. Bradinator Says:

    Look, the coach search is just like the draft. You try and pick the right guy and hope you’re right. Ok, Kelly is a college coach and some of them haven’t fared well at the NFL level. Correct me if I’m wrong, but 6 guys got fired this season and none of them were college coaches, they were experienced NFL guys before taking a head coaching job. The only “proven” NFL coaches are Arians, who may or may not really be available, and McCarthy, who does not appear to be on our radar. Monken, who everyone was screaming to have call the Offense, was a college coach. For every Jimmy Johnson, or Tom Coughlin there are Shianos, Chip Kellys, Sabans, and Spurriers. For every successful NFL coach that jumps up, like Frank Reich, there are, judging by this year, at least 6 NFL guys that didn’t make it either. NONE of us know until the stuff hits the fan. Kelly wins everywhere he goes. Arians is also a winner. Eric Bieniemy has been around good programs. So far the hot coaching coordinator de jour hasn’t worked out very well. What we DO know is that the Glazer’s haven’t been good doing it all by themselves without any help. Maybe this will work better, whoever they pick. Just going by “he’s a college coach” or “he is the hot coordinator” ain’t working out.

  42. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Steven Levy Says:
    “just FYI, but Pardon the Interruption has never once referenced “America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston”. Never. ”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    LOL, you ARE kidding, right? No one said that Pardon the Interruption used the “America’s Quarterback” moniker.
  43. Michael Wright Says:
    Selecting Kelly as Bucs HC would be the biggest mistake in Buc History!!
    But..I would not be surrpised at what these incompetent Glazers do. I’m already prepared for the worst. You see…Long ago, I accepted…MY BUCLIFE.
  44. Jean Lafitte Says:
    That’s the crux of the whole problem. The Glazers need to be truly motivated to turn this flaccid franchise around. They are gonna have to spend big bucks.
    Historically losing has hurt this club in many more ways than most know.
  45. Tbbucs3 Says:
    Raheem Morris
    Greg Shiano
    Dirk Koetter
    And Lovie Smith aren’t exactly “splash” hires.
  46. Dubcity06 Says:
    Lol “pro bowler”
  47. Cobraboy Says:
    The ONLY Buc “splash” hires were McKay & Gruden.
  48. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    But Cobraboy…. what about Leeman Bennett??!!!!!!!! 😉
  49. Jerry Jones Says:
    Joe, name all the “SPLASH” moves the Glazers have made.
  50. reelbuc Says:
    Please no.I have been a die-hard but this will be the last straw for me .He is freaking terrible
  51. Tony LA Says:
    I’m really confused by the “splash” hire concept. the Bucs haven’t had a splash hire since Gruden. That was a looooooooong time ago when the elder Glazer was fully in charge.
    Kelly just feels wrong. It really does. The college guys so rarely work out.
    Arians is by far the best option, especially because of the likelihood he would come with a guy like Bowles for the defense.
    I’m hoping there are serious conversations going on behind the scenes with him. He’s worth it. He’s had success wherever he has been.
  52. reelbuc Says:
    Harbaugh or BA or bust
  53. Steven007 Says:
    Demon, in the second paragraph the Joe’s explicitly use their usual language in referencing JW. I think that was a joke referring to the usage of that language. Clearly they didn’t call him that because no one on earth calls him that. Except Joe.
