Bruce Arians On Jameis: “Some Of Those Things Will Go Away”

January 16th, 2019

Interesting chatter yesterday from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach and resident quarterback whisperer.

Bucco Bruce Arians was talking Jameis Winston with one of his many friends in the national media on The Adam Schefter Podcast.

Arians said he is confident that when Jameis realizes how much Arians’ believes in him and how Jameis is the unquestioned leader of the team, his decision-making will improve.

It was an interesting take, one that came after Schefter asked how Arians can cut Jameis’ interceptions.

“I think through better understanding of what we’re trying to do and the realization that you don’t have to throw it through a little window every single time to prove you can,” Arians said. “That some of those decisions that you think you can get it in there aren’t worth it and you’re hurtin’ the team.

“I just think the confidence that he knows I have in him, that he’s the man, it’s his team, some of those things will go away.”

Arians went on to say new QB coach Clyde Christiansen is an A+ fundamentals guy and the fact offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich “played the position in this offense,” makes the surroundings for America’s Quarterback a slam dunk.

“There shouldn’t be any questions that can’t be answered,” Arians said. “It’s just making the right decisions at the right time.”

Schefter told Arians that he can make Jameis a lot of money this season, referring to a lucrative contract extension. Arians’ reply? “I hope so. He made me some.”

I will say I hope, as a bucs fan, that this is the stars aligning, etc. Because no one can say that Jameis does not want to win and loves football and Coach Arians loves to coach football in his way.. Have no clue how this turns out and hope it does with 10 wins next year and jameis becomes a top 10 QB. I think that Coach Arians is this bucs generations Sam Wyche and that will be great going forward because wyche got the bucs rolling to the super bowl by drafting sapp, brooks and lynch and other superb personnel moves and wyche was also a QB whisperer

    14 total interceptions
    -3 hail marys
-1 rb ran wrong route per Dirk
-1 Khalil Mack hit his arm
Thats leaves 8 that were on his actual decision making or bad throws.
This interception thing is over blown.
Peyton threw 81 interceptions with 92 total turnovers in his first 4 years and still won games

  4. OneBuc55 Says:

Just knowing your coach believes in you and has your back really does help a QB…

Yes Jameis’ suspension hurt the team but Dirk handled the situation totally wrong… Jameis was 2nd or 3rd team all training camp, only got 2nd team reps during preseason, then he wasn’t allowed in the building for the first 3 weeks of the season…Not expecting him to come back a rusty was just dumb…

What Dirk should have done was get him as many snaps as he could during training camp and preseason in anticipation of him missing 3 weeks…Fitzpatrick would’ve been fine, hes a 14 year vet who already knows the offense…

Imho Dirk’s handling of Winston was 1 of the big reasons he was fired…I guess he forgot that Winston was the reason he got the HC job in Tampa in the first place…

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I can understand the focus on Winston’s improvement with Arians but I still contend that the improvement with the Bucs doesn’t rest totally on Winston’s shoulders……the improvement in the running game and defense will be what lifts the Bucs.

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

Footwork and mechanics……in the Saints game last weekend a commentator mentioned how Brees on every passing situation in practice resets his feet on every read before resetting and making his throw….muscle memory…that is the first step in accuracy !!!!!!…Jameis is a tangled mess of mechanics on many of his throws

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

    “TBBF

thats why Jason Gump is the most important and accountable person in the organization

With the incompetant oline and run game, JW should be commended for not having twice as many turnovers

Jason Gump is the reason why the Bucs are not in the playoffs”

  9. Ed chase Says:

I like everything he said, but can we get rid of the Americas QB thing. He’s tampa QB.

  10. Tackleblockwin Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

That is how I feel. I think he will be much improved with a good running game. And as I’ve said a million times on this site…Tampa is a D town. You build a good D, and the fans will respond. If the coaches can turn this D around and improve the running game, we will be tough to handle.

  11. VFL98 Says:

Yea, not a big fan of America’s QB thing either. Get of rid of that saying Joe Please! Thanks. It’s like your making fun of Winston because we all know he isn’t America’s QB. He is barely Tampa’s QB, but hopefully that will change now the QB whisperer has arrived.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Duthsty … Interesting take on Sam Wyche’s role in ‘setting the table’ for what followed. Agree 100%. Too few in Bucsville seem to appreciate what he did here.

TBBF … “the improvement in the running game and defense will be what lifts the Bucs.” I’m with ya 100% that this year can’t rest solely on Jameis’ shoulders. More than anything else, I want to see this defense rise from the ashes.

Kobe … No question in my mind about the role Jason Licht has played (and not played) in our PAST, BUT … he’s got a new daddy now & it seems very obvious to me that Coach Arians will be steering the ship from now on. Jason WILL support BA’s decisions 100% I’ll be willing to bet. Better days ahead.

  13. Jeff Says:

Someone tell Schefter that Jameis has ALREADY cut his interceptions in the second half of this season by making better decisions. He’s heading in the right direction and BA working with him can only improve on that.

  15. Loyaltotheend Says:

It’s not only the interceptions and fumbles

Consistently making good decisions and being accurate with the ball as well as where he places the ball on receivers is key to him living up to his draft status

Can’t throw balls behind high or in a spot where defenders can make a play

  16. Kobe Faker Says:

The only question bucfans should have is

What is your opinion of BA when Benenoch starts next year

What is your opinion of BA when rojo and barber is our running game?

What is your opinion of BA if our secondary is primarily the same?

Kobe Faker and BA honeymoon is over”

  17. OneBuc55 Says:

@Ed, I actually like the fact that Joe refers to Jameis as “America’s Quarterback”…

Media heads across America love dragging his name through the mud… However, wether you love it or hate, negative press is still free advertisement…Now all Jameis needs to do is win to change the narrative…

Enter in Bruce Arians; it would be something if 10 years from now fans and media heads are arguing if Jameis is the GOAT…and we can all look back and know exactly the year he became everything everyone thought he could be when we took him #1… Jameis Winston, the best QB Arians has ever coached? We’ll see, only time will tell…

It’s time to move out of the basement and start eating some W’s…Go Bucs!…

  20. LJS4th Says:

Draft a LT at #5 and that will help Shameis more than anything! Jonah Williams from Alabama might be there and he would be a great pick!!! Move D Smith to RT and pick up a guard in FA and we have a line that can get to work blocking!!!

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Running 29
    Defense 27
    Give Away/Take Away 31

    Passing 1st

    Offense 3rd

Obviously, Jameis contributed to the turnover ranking…..but it seems quite obvious we have other areas to work on besides Jameis.

“I think that Coach Arians is this bucs generations Sam Wyche…”

I kind of feel Dirk Koetter was that. He brought in some key talent, like Sam did. The next coach has to capitalize on that talent.

But the next coach dungy the DID NOT CAPITALIZE on whyces talent it took the next coach gruden.

2-6 postseason under Dungy the clown was failure while wasting the talent handed to him by whyche not Capitalizeing on it… you cant rewrite history because you like hypocrite failures.

Glazers are B.A. biggest hurdle not licht or players.

  31. miken Says:

@bozai… pretty good point. If wyche has a decent vet qb, he coulda made a few playoff runs and long term, that would not have been best for the bucs. Same thing with Dirk. I hoping BA gets us going.

  32. Chris Says:

Love the site but until he earns something , please stop calling him America’s QB. This is the last year jameis to prove himself. Idc about the yards he throws for. I want wins. KCs defense is horrible and yet pat Mahomes wins 11 games and probably the MVP in his first year starting at 21-22 years of age and he came from that non pro style offense.

No more excuses. For being the most pro ready an tp come out, Winston’s learning curve has been longer than most predicted.

I do say koetter benching him woke him up last season. The TOS went down and he seemed to learn a lesson.

Not including off field character, I still think the biggest problem with Winston is he lacks field vision and locking in on his top read too often. The successful QBs see the field pre and post snap and have the vision to see the second and third read open quickly. Jameis lacks that with too many times he held the ball with Godwin humph Brate or the RB open

  33. Jmarkbuc Says:

    DR

Don’t forget Floyd Peters. He had a MAJOR impact and was here before Sam, if memory serves…..

  34. Chris Says:

I remember reading how every nfl organization loved the knowledge and football iq of Byron Leftwich. His problem was never mental or talent. He just had the worst throwing motion in nfl history. That doesn’t mean he can’t coach. I mean look at guys like Mcvay reicht and Pederson. Heck even Reid, Nagy, Belichick. None of these guys were all pro nfl players. Their football IQ and leadership and planning was much more advanced.

  35. Bucsfan77 Says:

We need to completely change our culture, we started with bringing in BA, let’s bring back the Creamsicle and Bucco Bruce logo. I javelin always preferred that uniform.

  36. 813bucboi Says:

    maybe….

but the difference will be this staff will do more coaching than talking!!!!!!….as we all know dirks staff loved to do more talking than coaching!!!!!….

    #REALIST KNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  37. miken Says:

@tmaxcon… curious, how are the glazers BA’s biggest hurdle?

  38. Jimbo Says:

Short memories on Christiansen. He absolutely stunk up the joint as OC in 2001. Dungy lost his job because he refused to fire his inept co-religionist. Why this disaster is back in Tampa is beyond belief.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    tmaxcon Says:
“But the next coach dungy the DID NOT CAPITALIZE on whyces talent it took the next coach gruden.”

That is total crock. Dungy turned this team from a losing team to a consistent winning team.

Gruden was never consistently winning. It was a roller coaster ride of highs and lows with him.

  40. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Kobe

This is where I just put my hands up and say “I duno” when it comes to the “Gump” or “Coach” influenced draft decisions & players.

    I.e.

Do you think Gump drafted Ronald Jones without any influence from Dirk Koetter?
Do you think Gump drafted short CBs without any influence from Smitty?

I am not confident enough to say I know what. What I do know is BA came in with “a plan” on how to fix the team. When I hear that I don’t think Xs and Os or QB footwork. When I hear that I think personnel changes and philosophical team building changes.

Which gets back to the combo of Coach+GM on the draft and FA and the mystery of who was behind what decision.

Brent Grimes / short corners / huge DTs = Mike Smith bread n butter. So if that’s his direction and he’s trying to accomodate the staff – well sh1t.

Koetter is why Doug Martin stuck around and he sure seems like an influence on both the McNichols / Rojo picks. But I really don’t know. But like I said – if he drafted these RBS because Koetter said they were the best fit for what he wanted – well sh1t.

    Either

    1) Everyone was on board with these picks / FAs between GM/Coaches and everyone was dumb.
    2) Licht catered his draft board to coaching influence and demand vs what he & his scouts actually identified as top talent

Either scenario is sh1tty but I hope for #2 to be the case lol

  41. Lord Cornelius Says:

DR: “Kobe … No question in my mind about the role Jason Licht has played (and not played) in our PAST”

Really? Because I have a lot of questions lol. Unless you believe the Lovie Smith / Dirk Koetter / Mike Smith had absolutely no influence on the draft philosophy and players they liked.

@tmaxcon… curious, how are the glazers BA’s biggest hurdle?

instead of asking me, which you won’t like my response so being the kinder gentler tmax let’s do it this way today why don’t you ask yourself. these simple questions

How many playoff wins since Grudens Glory year????

How many respected coaches have been hired and ran off without even the sniff of success????

How many times have the bucs “Won the Offseason” yet earned another basement title???

How many talented successful free agents have been acquired only to disappoint or flat out forget how to play football once they arrive???

How many circus-like incidents have occurred since super bowl (mrsa, free meltdown, assjack, jameis bs, talib, blount etc… etc…. ) ????

Teams with solid leadership from top to bottom still have to deal with issues but not to the extent the Bucs organization which is void of leadership has to deal with. the common demonater for the nearly two decades of embarrassing on-field product is the glazers that is fact. second, unless you are relative or totally blinded, you would realize they have beaten 2 franchises down, on 2 separate continents into complete and total embarrassments.

look I can no longer get excited for hype and propaganda it will take the old fashion way of actually earning it on Sundays for me to accept the glazers finally figured out what they have not been able to figure out for nearly two decades. if this was a 4 or 5-year slump maybe give them the benefit doubt but they have not done anything on the field in nearly two decades and the last good decision they made was showing dungy the clown the door albeit 2 years late.

the real question that needs to be asked sir is Why do you think it will change this time and why is blind optimism deserved when glazers have not EARNED it…

  43. tmaxcon Says:

    Jimbo

dungy lost his job because he is a one-dimensional clown who chokes in the postseason… bucs under dungy were a bad team with a great defense. dungy is a joke. dungy’s 2-6 failed postseason record was the reason the clown was tossed, albeit two years too late. dungy will be best known for being a hypocrite who wasted more hall of famers on two franchises than any coach in nfl history. he was absolutely loaded and won one pathetic Superbowl which if he was going against anyone other than loser lovie he would have lost that.

  44. tmaxcon Says:

until the leadership void is filled at one buc circus tent Lombardi would fail. maybe B.A. can overcome and fix it or maybe he is just too old, fragile and in need of a retirement account boost similar to loser lovie and the family plan.

  45. tmaxcon Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai

you sure like to rewrite history and live in denial…. dungy failed and NEVER EVER WON CONSISTENTLY WITH BUCS…. 2-6 in postseason. how is that winning consistently???? In reality, it’s downright embarrassing given the talent handed to him by whyce…

you fools put dungy the clown and McKay on these do know wrong pedestals when in reality they failed miserably… Arthur blank could not strip mckay’s gm title fast enough. dungy and mckay where handed a great defense and were unable to build a complete team those are undisputed facts sir. that is failure my friend not winning consistently…. bucs were pretenders under dungy the clown never contenders.

  47. Lord Cornelius Says:

Agree with tmax that the owners have been the biggest hurdle.

Not because they don’t care or are bad leaders. Owners aren’t supposed to be leaders or giving inspirational speeches or any of that sh1t lol.

They just haven’t hired a good coach & GM yet. Period. That’s it.

Everyone they’ve hired has gone on to worse failures or retirement. They aren’t getting rid of coaches that go on to succeed elsewhere.

If they get this right with BA/Licht and keep hands off – then they did their job and aren’t the problem anymore. Period.

  48. The Buc Realist Says:

Tmaxcon is right on every point as usual!!!!!!!!! The sheep should write down his posts and read them weekly and maybe then they would finally get it!!!!!!!!!!! But the sheep are all caught up in the bright and shiny of something new, thinking that this will solve everything when they have not even seen it yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just wait until training camp when BA practices are supposed to be as tough as Coach Schiano was!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will the player complain this time to?????? when they do, will the media take up for them and against the coaches because the coaches did not kiss their butts??????? Did the owners ever stick up and say this coach is our guy???????????? So many traps and pitfalls and most are the own making of the organization!!!!!!!!!

Why do the sheep keep repeating past mistakes??? Because they have been told too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  51. JimmyJack Says:

One thing that’s very encouraging was the final 6 games from Winston. He was making better decisions but it didn’t look natural.

It’s encouraging because it showed that is is capable of reading his plays better and making smarter choices. The fact that it looked unnatural leads me to believe he is not being trained properly.

His progressions should be instinctual. But they weren’t. I believe stronger coaching and training will be all the help Winston needs.

  52. 813bucboi Says:

how can you blame the owners?…..

imo, they are decent owners….we could have worse…..they let everyone do their job….and when they dont do their job, they fire them…..

there’s only a hand full of owners that have the luxury of being a “hands off” type owner and has a winning organization…..

most “hands on” owners still fail at producing a consistent winner year in and year out….

the redskins owner was “hands on” for years…never won anything….made a bunch of hires and fires…..recently he’s been “hands off”….same results…and jay gruden is a good coach….

jerry jones is a “hands on” type owner…..he hasnt won anything since the 90’s….he’s also made a bunch of hires and fires….

kraft is hands off imo but has the GOAT at HC and QB….
baltimore’s owner is hand off imo….they are consistently winning 9-10games….
the rooneys are hands off imo…they only step in when things get messy just like kraft and the ravens owner….and the steelers consistently win games…..

the problem is leadership but its not from the owners….the leadership problem comes from the HC….once the HC sets the standard and lays down the law, players will fall in line….then a culture is set and winning begins…..

    #REALIST KNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  54. JimmyJack Says:

It’s true the Glazers have made very bad hires but you gotta remember 1 thing.

This hire is much different this time. We got the biggest name on the market……..Sure the Bucs would have loved to hire a experienced & documented winner before….but if you think BA was going to come coach one of Dominick’s teams or if he was going to come clean up the mess Dominck left your kidding yourself.

The Bucs had a shamble of a roster and FO during all the past hires. No experienced HC was going to take on that mess. We were picking from the bottom of the barrel. That’s a big part of why the Glazers kept striking out.

To posters like tmax and realist who don’t understand the difference between hiring a guy like BA and having to promote unproven assistants like Dirk & Raheem I feel sorry for you…….but hey keep crying about it for the next 10 months. Bruce will shown the difference firsthand come September.

  55. JimmyJack Says:

Hahaha Realist and Tmax don’t understand the difference between hiring a guy like Bruce Arians & picking from the bottom of the barrel and promoting nobody’s like Dirk & Raheem. I feel sorry for you fools.

  56. D1 Says:

    Jimmy,

You’re right about Jameis looking uncomfortable in those last games. I’d gladly take the real Winston than the shell that we saw in the home stretch.

He protected the ball 1000% better but it came at too high and price. There was far to many opportunities left on the field to say He improved. I understand completely why Jameis dialed it back but the opportunity to hit big plays suffered.

The idea that Winston had poor coaching is too big a net to cast over the situation. Too easily refuted by the fact that both monken and koetter are employed today. To suggest that winston needs a different way to be coached or personality.

But the system that Koetter uses is super easy to read from and go thru progressions. It’s instinctive. ..because it’s about eye movement and simple concepts. It’s the same as Arians
    Only easier.

  57. JimmyJack Says:

D1…..I believe Winston play a bit more risk/reward then he did in those last 6 games but I also think he can keep making good decisions like he did and look natural doing so. He just needs to be trained in a better way.

Winston’s rushing abilities is the perfect example of poor training IMO. If you can remember in 2016, when Lovie was his HC, Winston had plenty of rushing TDs.(redzone woes?)…….As soon as Dirk took over Winston stopped rushing the football as much.

This was a mistake. Can’t say for certain that Lovie trained him to look for more runs but we can say for certain that Winston has good ability rushing(great ability to throw off of the rush threat) and should have been trained to rush just as much…..if not more.

Dirk had three years to tap more production out of Winston. If he was trained to utilize the run he wasn’t trained properly…….or he doesn’t understand his training.

You could give credit to Dirk for doing better once Winston came off the bench but that’s not a known fact. I think it was one of the Joe’s who said Winston may have coaching himself in those last 6. I believe the Joe’s may be correct.

  58. JimmyJack Says:

Bengals game…..2nd INT on a play action.

There are two reads on that play. One to each flat. The way then play is designed the middle of the field is going to be wide open for a run 90% of the time. Winston should be trained to take what he can get on that play every time. The run has to be his third read on that play.

If Winston does not know to run the ball as his third option that play should never ever be run during a NFL game

As I watched that play happened I could see that Winston has not been trained to run on that play. He was poorly prepared.

Our coach has gone three years and has never utilized one of Winstons weapons. This is part of the reason he is gone now.

Hey Bruce. You don’t wanna know what Winston can’t do. You want to know what he can do, right? Let me tell you that he can rush for TDs. But I’m certain you already know.

  59. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Kobe

Jesus Christ dude I’m just asking questions lol. Questions no one other than those inside a draft war room can answer.

All I’m saying is coaches have influence on the draft. That’s it man. Pretty sure you know this too.

I’m not giving Licht a pass. I’m saying I hope he isn’t as bad as we think he is and that some of his bad choices were pushed by others. It’s a “I hope” post about things we don’t know.

That’s all. We don’t need this type of divisive attitude my liege.

If Coach Arians can teach the most NFL ready QB to come out in years to actually be that QB we have something to work with, and if not. Next man up! Move along. Not wanting to see it but a typical 6 – 7 turnover month or worse from Americas QB, might be fun to watch and listen to the colorful language coach Arians uses. I am ready for it.
Fingers crossed this will be a success, not holding my breath.

I recall, hopefully correctly, Jameis said it was Fitz who told him to run if he got certain looks. If that’s true, then I have to believe that a big disconnect between the player Jameis is now and the player koetter wants him to become. Yeah that entirely coaching.

Another thing that I hope is corrected is playcalling on the first few series. Jameis seems to be better suited for the entire game if He can get into a rhythm passing . There’s a lot I never liked about the offense scheme and how it was called. On the other hand, JW has proven He can come out first series and bomb it downfield. If He’s comfortable with that, then It makes sense.

The play you reference, what’s the coverage …

I think BA has control of the 53 man roster…Gump can say it but im sure BA agreed before hiring

Im sure BA told Bowles he will get what Todd needs to play competent defense

BA has equal powers as Lovie”

Shouldn’t “America’s Quarterback” go to “America’s Team” ??? Makes sense.

    @ Kobe

That’s probably a good thing then – IF Licht was the mastermind behind the dumb sh1t we can all agree on lol

It’s a shame the coaching staff doesn’t include the GM or the owners ? This upcoming offseason will show us a lot, but the only players I would call untouchable are OJ, Beckwith, Godwin, and Evans. ( if someone offered a 1st rounder I would think about it because he’s been solid, but always comes off the field after making a catch ) Sadly though we have Jason Licht as the draft analysts and that guy sucks and still don’t understand how he has a job with this team, but I hope BA overseas and overrides any decision the guy who drafted a PK in the second. We are stacked at WR and if this organization would have just been honest and not fed us this playoff crap we would already have a 3rd rounder for DJax, but not so much. Until the Glazers sell this team we will be bottom feeders again and again, but BA will realize the mess he got into and fake an illness !!! I don’t trust JAMISS to lead a franchise and wouldn’t it be great if Vinik or a passionate owner who not only cares about the product on the field, but the fans as well. Wow get chills just thinking about !!!!

For Jameis it will have to be about getting the ball out quicker and looking defenders off better. If he can accomplish those two things, he will be a Top 8 QB in this league. I believe the INTs and fumbles will always be slightly worse than average, but I will certainly take that with all the positives he brings to the table.

Bucs also need smarter play-calling in the redzone. Everything else that’s wrong with this team is on the defensive and special teams sides of the ball. In fact, you fix that side of the ball and the Bucs will be a playoff team even if Winston doesn’t improve one iota .
