The Morning After

December 31st, 2018

We’ve got a whole lot to tackle and little time. Let’s get rolling on this historic day.

As of last night, the Bucs no longer have a head coach. We all know by now Dirk Koetter was released yesterday. Joe gets no joy in seeing a head coach launched because that means the team is in bad shape.

Joe will have a bit more about this in tomorrow’s edition of the “Ira Kaufman Podcast” but it really hit Joe the family angle of a coach losing his job. Yesterday, Joe saw the pain and anguish on the faces and minds of Koetter’s wife and children. Koetter’s family knew he was done.

Yeah, Joe always hears about the family angle but Joe has never been around a coach’s family like he was yesterday. It’s the ugly side of a coach being fired. But you know what; Joe’s not going to cry for Koetter. Team Glazer made him a rich man. For coaching football. If he wanted to retire today he could. Koetter easily has enough cash stowed away he could pay for his grandchildren’s college education.

While Joe may feel bad that a good man is unemployed, let’s not get carried away. It’s not like Koetter’s a guy working on an assembly plant with four kids to feed in the middle of Ohio who lost his gig because the factory uprooted to Thailand.

Koetter may very well be working as a coordinator somewhere next year if he decides to go back to work (he’s under contract with the Bucs at least one more season) and pull in $1 million a year. So it’s not like Koetter, who will turn 60 in February, will have to apply for food stamps.

What Next?

Well, finding a new coach is next on the to-do list on Jason Licht’s desk. This may be the most important move the Bucs’ AC/DC-loving general manager will make in his career. If Licht misses the mark here, he won’t be a general manager much longer.

Of course, people are pointing to two long shots as favorites. Jim Harbaugh and Bruce Arians. Harbaugh because Team Glazer was after him last year and there have been reports that his agent is talking to NFL teams currently. Arians, in part, because of his connection to Licht that dates back to Arizona.

And of course, both Arians and Harbaugh have connections to America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. It sure smells as if Team Glazer wants a coach who will accept Jameis as the franchise quarterback. And after the way he played yesterday, it would be foolish or irresponsible not to want Jameis. He had one of his best games yesterday. Good Jameis.

Joe doesn’t buy that the Bucs job is a bad job and not because Joe pulls for both the Bucs and Jameis. Joe spoke with a Bucs offensive coach about a month ago. Joe asked him if he was feeling the breath of Team Glazer down the back of his neck with the losses mounting.

This coach told Joe, “No.” And why was that, why was he and the rest of the coaches not feeling intense pressure from Team Glazer? “They are never around,” Joe was told.

In short, Team Glazer lets the coaches coach. They give the coaches the supplies they want and get the hell out of the way.

Yesterday, Koetter mentioned working for Team Glazer is “spectacular.” From what Joe has learned, Team Glazer is not afraid to cut a check to the personnel department and/or coaching staff for whatever resources they want or need. And we know Team Glazer is not shy about writing checks with big numbers and many zeros.

So you add it all up, working for Team Glazer means they let you do your job, they pay well and they make sure you have all the latest technologies and other resources in order to succeed. Who wouldn’t want to work for a boss(es) like that?

That’s why Joe thinks it is nonsense the Bucs are perceived to be an awful job. So someone would rather work for a crazy, impulsive fool like Jim Haslam in Cleveland? Or that overbearing, micromanaging cheapskate in Cincinnati?

Other Candidates

Allegedly, this is not a good crop of potential new NFL head coaches. More nonsense.

Once again Joe will point out that Bill Walsh was blacklisted, Father Dungy was Team Glazer’s third option and Don Coryell was an obscure name from a small college in southern California. All three of them turned around horrid franchises. Good coaches are out there. You just have to find them.

Joe hopes Licht stays fully away from his buddies in New England. Joe’s seen and had enough of the Belicheat tree. Preferably, Joe would like to see someone from the Andy Reid tree.

The next Sean McVay? Sure, how about his quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor?

If the Bucs have to hire a meathead defensive coach (Joe doesn’t think that will happen), hopefully they can pull a college coach away to serve as offensive coordinator. Someone like Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott or in a perfect world, USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

No head coach straight from college to run the Bucs, no. As offensive coordinator (Iowa State’s Matt Campbell for example), yes, but why would Campbell, a rising star in the college ranks, take a demotion in both pay and job title?

Of course, Joe is just throwing out names. No inside info here.

No Jameis?

Every sign on every interstate, state road, back road and stars in the sky suggest Jameis is coming back for 2019. And the early rumors of Bucs coaching targets suggest they all have connections to Jameis. Even reliable Adam Schefter of BSPN reported yesterday morning Jameis was coming back.

But yesterday during Jameis’ postgame presser Joe asked if anyone from the Bucs informed him he would return next year. Jameis said that hasn’t happened.

Feel free to draw your own conclusion.

GMC’s Final Game?

Boy, in the locker room after the game Joe thought Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was giving his own eulogy. It sure sounded as if GMC thinks or expects to be playing elsewhere next year.

GMC was deliberate in speech those spoke in hushed tones, at times seemed emotional if not wistful, and maybe depressed.

This is something to keep an eye on in the next couple of months. The new league year begins March 13. Could GMC be an ex-Bucs player by then?

(Since the Bucs will have a new coach, the team’s first gathering for team workouts with their new leader could come as early as April 1, the date the NFL allows teams with new coaches to begin offseason workout programs.)

Who Is Leaving

There will be many changes with the Bucs in the coming weeks. Lots of turnover is expected and should be expected for a team that only won 10 games the past two seasons.

Malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson is gone. That guy may have been the worst free agent signing in the history of the Bucs. Not only did he not even come close with production to match his salary, he nearly imploded the locker room, almost got the franchise quarterback run out of town and only a select few know how many young players he poisoned. He’s been pretty quiet on social media of late so maybe he’s too busy packing?

Brent Grimes may have had one of his better games of the season yesterday but he’s been banged up a lot this year and hasn’t been his normal stud self. Grimes will be 36 by next season. There’s not much of a market for a 36-year old corner and besides, Miko a month or so ago said on her Instagram Stories feed if Grimes stays with the Bucs she won’t be here or attend his games.

Among others Joe can’t see sticking around are Will Gholston and Jacquizz Rodgers, and maybe not Mitch Unrein, Evan Smith or Chris Conte.

I enjoyed that mention of Thailand, Joe, as I happen to be at a bar in Bangkok at the moment having a beer. From the other side of the planet from Tampa, Happy New Year and a toast to all Bucs fans everywhere. Here’s to better days ahead.

  2. mike10 Says:

First off, DJax was far from the worst FA acquisition. His talents weren’t utilized correctly and he even tried to save the locker room last year when things began falling apart. Your boy Jameis can’t connect with him, because he can’t connect with anyone past 25 yards. Jackson will go down as the top FA we were never able to take advantage of bc of poor coaching and QB play.

Second, your FA departure list is missing some other potential key names like McCoy, Curry, RoJo, Fitzpatrick, Humphries, Donovan Smith, and Kwon Alexander.

Also, I have little faith in Licht to either hire the right coach or turn this mess around. Part of why we watched the departure of Koetter is because of Licht’s shortcomings.

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

As much as I like Hump…he ain’t worth matching the big $$$ the FA market will offer…the roster is full of excellent pass catchers both WR’s and TE’s…the Hump money would be better spent on a RB

  4. Hodad Says:

How does a G.M. who is in the final year of his contract lure a good coach to come here? The Glazers not being around, breathing down peoples necks might be part of the problem. They wait for everything to fall apart crawl out of their hole like groundhog day, fire someone, hire another loser then crawl back into their hole till next time. As long as Moe, Larry, and Curley Glazer own this club we’ll always be more of a slapstick comedy then an NFL franchise.

  5. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

    Mike10-

    Amen

  6. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

The Bucs insider who said the Glazers are never around told us all we need to know about why this franchise is so moribund. Their retention of Licht puts an exclamation point on it.

Rather than hiring a consulting firm to look for a head coach they should use one to find a real CEO or President to run the organization. If they don’t, you can rest assured the losing will continue no matter who they hire as coach or GM for that matter. It is a simple fact fact of American private company life – a business cannot overcome a leadership void at the C-suite level.

What they appear to be doing- again- defines insanity. Get ready for the same result two to three years from now.

  7. Cobraboy Says:

Second on the to-do list is securing Humphries. There isn’t a coach out there who wouldn’t want him back. Give him a chunk of Jackson money.

Breaking up the Evans/Humphries/Godwin/Howard group would be offensive malpractice, and the Bic fan base should hire the Dolman Law Group™ to sue… 😉

  8. FR Says:

If you have to point out every time your QB has had a good game then that says something about his past performance. You put a Tom Brady, Drew Breeze or Rogers at QB in Tampa for the last 4 years and we be looking at a playoff birth and not sitting out again. You can talk stats all you want but look at what we have done since Winston has arrived. OOOOO cry cry yes its this its that its not the all his fault sure keep believing he is our future he is just another RG3.

  9. Cobraboy Says:

Has anyone considered the Glazers run the team through Licht? The Fire Licht Gang are under the impression Licht operates independently of ownership.

I doubt there is a GM or “President of Football Operations” who does not answer to ownership in a meaningful way.

For instance, I doubt it was Licht who hired Koetter.

  10. Loyaltotheend Says:

Why would the Bucs have to tell Winston he’s back?

    He’s under contract

    Wouldn’t he assume he’s back?

Especially if he thinks he’s as good as some in here think he is

  11. FR Says:

He will be back until another HC tells the Glazers they made a mistake. Winston has talent he just doesn’t listen very well.

  12. martinii Says:

I think Dirk did his best and believe he has a lot to offer the NFL going forward. I think he was sincere about winning and worked hard to repair a feeble offense. Unfortunately things didn’t work out and he was released. I just hope I don’t have to listen to a continuous stream of hate and criticism like we endured about Lovie Smith and Greg Schiano, they to didn’t work out but both had a strong desire to bring a championship to Tampa. Let’s focus on the future. I realize we have to have someone to blame but that won’t win games or support a new regime who will be focused on turning this team around. There are no guarantee’s and we can only hope their plan brings us a winner. Good luck to Dirk Koetter, his family, and any other coaching personal that may be leaving.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

One problem with retaining Licht is that he will be inclined not to cut his losses……that means sticking with losers he has chosen…..

Will he abandon Donovan Smith……probably not.
    Caleb Benenoch…..probably not.
    Kwon…..no
    VH3…….no

Lets hope he does a deal for Hump

As far as Rojo is concerned…..after seeing his college production and watching highlights, I am convinced that he can play…..he never really got a chance….whenever he was put in it screamed “Give it to Rojo”…..and the Oline laid down most every time. Licht won’t cut him and probably shouldn’t….but he can bring in a replacement for Rodgers.

We need to jettison much of the older, non-productive talent…..and even some of the productive talent.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Didn’t mean to say Kwon was a loser……but Licht may keep him regardless of his knee….

  15. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Jason Licht first year leads the bucs to 2-14 and build in 5 yrs a 5-11 franchise and is able to throw everyone under the bus. He has not made a decent FA signing and maybe 3 legit draft picks. Koetter will be in the ATL next year as OF and lite the bucs up 2x

  16. SteveK Says:

    TampaBayBucFan,

I hope we can draft an OT: Jonah Williams or Greg Little @5, and let D Smith test FA. No need to commit top money to an average performer, extremely durable and a little lacking in finishing to the whistle.

  17. Cb13 Says:

Please hire Kris Richard for HC

  18. Waterboy Says:

Speaking of Rodgers, did you see the guy that Atlanta had as their 4th string RB yesterday (Jeremy Langford)? He was one of the guys that beat Rodgers out in Chicago when they cut him. That’s not good when a team’s 4th option at RB beat out one of your starters (3rd down back).

  19. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

Damn Joe I wish you guys had a UNCENSORED JOE BUCS FAN PAGE honestly I’d fork out a few Bucs a month for it. Keep your same format but have a little of the nasty on the backside,JoeBucsFan page 2 for members only. Anyways F Miko. It’s not true behind every good man there’s a better woman. That’s B.S. From a Fans perspective it has always appeared to me Brent is an alright guy. He will be missed in a sense that the opposing team automatically when they stepped on the field had his respect. Even if he hasn’t been who he once was. If we would have had two hurt Brent Grimes’ on both corners all year I think we would have been Playing this upcoming wildcard weekend. It’s possible. Hell anything is possible, I mean we had a player try his best to butt eff a tree for God’s Sakes

  20. Bad Influence Says:

Difficult to be optimistic when we have a team guided by a losing GM and a team handcuffed to Jameis Winston. We’ll need a strong new head coach to overcome those handicaps. Go Bucs!

  21. TOM Says:

First let me thank the Glazer for me saving my hard earned money by not renewing my season tickets. Firing Koetter & retaining Licht will set this team back for years to come. Of dumb ass Licht & the Glazers are like peas in a pod. If I was a canidate for HC I would insist on having the final say on the draft and any FA signings. But since Licht will be doing the hiring I don’t think that is a possibility. IMO as long as the Glazers & Licht is in control this team is a long way from a winning record, let alone the playoffs, I don’t care who the HC is. Thanks again Glazers. GO RAYS.

  22. Iron Wombat Says:

Actually with DJax once you remove the 2 Fitzmagic fluke games neither Bucs QB could hit him and they threw a combined 7 picks trying to get him the ball. Yet Jameis could hit every other receiver deep. I know it’s hard for the blame Jameis crowd but JW probably isn’t the problem there. At this point i’m willing to give DJax a pass too because like everything else on this team coaching seems to be the root of all their problems. Dirk’s idea of a route for DJax was just run in a straight line down the field. A couple of weeks ago one a 3rd and long from the 20 they ran 3 guys vertically into the endzone and one dude ran a 3 yard out. That’s all on Koetter and his playbook was full of trash like that. He built and offense that racks up a lot of empty yards, can’t run at all and is awful in the redzone.

  23. zzbuc Says:

Sad day for the BUcs for many reasons……We lost a true gentleman and a good coach….He didn´t have the talent on the field……just 5 or 6 extraordinary players, the rest was average or garbage.,……..Proabably Koetter wil be in another franchise, wish him nothing but the best to a high class person and coach who payed a very high price for coaching a poor team, wish him the best except when he is our opponent…….The only thing I pray is that this GM gets a decent team for 2019!!!!
    Go Bucs…..sh******t

  24. SOEbuc Says:

Money doesn’t buy happiness Joe. Even though these players get paid billions of trillions of dollars that would likely do it for a million dollars for playing football if that’s what the average quota was.

Jim Harbaugh? Get the f#ck outta here. 1-10 against teams ranked 10 and above. Ariens is a good coach and of course wouldn’t mind bringing him in, but that’d be a long process and a lot of dough and he’s 66 so there’s a good chance he could just leave again.

Mike McCarthy! Been saying since Koetter has been sitting on the steaming toilet seat, we need a vet coach with playoff experience. 9 playoff appearances and a SB. They need to put the right amount of money in McCarthy’s face now and start doing your best to find the best DC.

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wow. Jon Gruden hired Mike Mayock as GM. I never thought he would return to the game.

  27. AlteredEgo Says:

Joe,,, so you blame Djax for having a qb that does not have long ball accuracy.. When Fitz was on his game we saw what Djax could do .. Winston doesn’t have “it”

  31. Matts17 Says:

Licht must be one hell of a salesman to keep his job. Dirk meeting speeding bus.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    SOEbuc Says
    “Money doesn’t buy happiness…”

A lack of money sure brings unhappiness!

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @SOEbuc

I prefer either Mike McCarthy too, or Flores.

I disagree with your opinion on Jim Harbaugh though. His NFL record is that he had zero losing seasons, 3 conference championship games and a superbowl journey, all with a subpar QB.

I don’t really care what he’s done in college. Just as college coaches can fail coming to the NFL, NFL coaches can fail going to college ball.

However…I think the price would be far too steep for him. On top of matching or beating his annual salary of $7m, the Bucs would have to pay the $10m to get him out of Michigan. That’s $17m + for the first year. He;s good, but nowhere near worth that kind of money.

  34. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Roy Cummings should be fired for being stupid enough to act outraged over Dork Koetters firing.

  35. Rayjay1122 Says:

    DJ Khaled Bucs song

All they do is whine, whine, whine no matter what
Got money on their mind, but they never get enough
And every time they step up in the stadium
    Everybody middle fingers go up
And they stay there, and they stay there
And they stay there, up, down, up, down, up, down
‘Cause all they do is whine, whine, whine
And if you going in put your middle fingers in the air, make ’em stay there!
just don’t drop the overpriced beer

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ben Says
“Joe…so you blame Djax for having a QB that does not have long ball accuracy.”

Your point loses value when Winston connected countless times with other WRs and TEs going deep. Just last week!

The problem is that DJax tried harder for Fitz. He did not want to play with Winston, so he did not put forth the effort. When Fitx came in, DJax probably felt if he made him look good, then they would not start Winston, so he put forth more effort.

Not to mention, DJax was purposely late to meetings and was a locker room issue, as was revealed yesterday. He was probably trying to get deactivated. That didn’t work so faking an injury was the next best thing.

  37. isrBuc Says:

It’s not just JW is back next year, by kipping Licht I think they are not going to draft another QB next year, definitely not a high pick. Can you expect JL to draft his second QB and admit failure with the #1 pick overall before the aftermath of 2019? I dont think so.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    SchwiftyBuc Says
“Roy Cummings should be fired for being stupid enough to act outraged over Dork Koetters firing.”

I would not say I am outraged…the writing was on the wall and I understand the decision. But I still like Dirk Koetter and feel he could have succeeded given a more developed defense and a kicker worth having. Heck, seeing that the kicker cost us 4 games this year, we would have been 9-7 this year with a better one. Can’t blame that on Koetter.

  39. Defense Rules Says:

Hodad … Your ‘They (the Glazers) wait for everything to fall apart, crawl out of their hole like groundhog day, fire someone, hire another loser then crawl back into their hole till next time’ statement pretty well sums up how I feel right now. Kinda depressing at this point.

Cobraboy … Agree 100% that “Breaking up the Evans/Humphries/Godwin/Howard group would be offensive malpractice.” And even though he had a rather pedestrian year, I’d even throw Cam Brate into that group. Can never have enough weapons.

And you’re right I’m sure that the Glazers probably do run the team through Licht (just behind the scenes). That’s an even more depressing thought.

  41. Nano Says:

    BRUCE ARIANS!!!
    Simple as that

  42. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Yeah Bonzai. Sit here and pretend that it was the Kicking game (which was admittedly bad) and not Koetters best buddy Mike Smith’s defense that torpedoed the season.

Every week that Mike Smith was our Defensive Coordinator this year, we were on pace to be the worst defense in NFL History. And Dirks response to that was “Ok Fire Mike Smith, and then what?” You absolutely can blame that on Koetter.

And Bonzai in all fairness, you also said earlier this year that you would not have been surprised if we ran the table after we got to 3-7. So forgive that I find laughable that you feel Dirk could have succeeded here. It was painfully obvious to me that he never would after 2017 which was an unmitigated train-wreck that should have resulted in Koetter, Smith and Licht being fired and replaced.

Also, the Glazers are fools for not firing and replacing Licht this season and placing him in charge of the coaching search especially considering that he should have already lost his job to Dave Gettleman last season.

Sitting at #5 overall we’ll probably walk away with a pretty damn good player, Licht after all does pretty well in no-brainer situations. But after that is a crap shoot. God have mercy on the poor soul of whomsoever Licht drafts in the 2nd round…

  43. Bucsfanman Says:

Lewis canned in Cincy! Gase out in Miami. Denver, Arizona, G.B, Cleveland, NYJ, and counting.
Jason Licht, of all people, will now be trusted to lure a HC to this franchise. A GM who, by all measures failed at his job, will remain in charge and attempt to bring in a decent HC?! Interesting.

The wheels on the bus go ’round and ’round…….

  44. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    BFM

I’m in the same boat with you brother. The Glazers are fools for retaining Licht.

Seems to me that the last time the franchise was this bad for this long, it took changing owners to fix the problem…

  45. Lord Cornelius Says:

Koetter had to go in the end. He was my favorite coach since Gruden honestly but we’re talking about 3 of the worst NFL hires in comparison.

I am not on board with Licht coming back for the record.

I am guessing the way the Glazers view this is Licht + Winston succeeding together or blowing up the GM/QB and starting over there. I get that logic but still.

Licht is probably a top 24 GM. Dominic was the 32nd best GM. So he’s an improvement but he’s also not a top GM. So we are settling for mediocrity IMO.

I like Kris Richard. He has my 1st vote.

  46. James Walker Says:

He will have a job in a few days if he wants it. He put together the #3 offense in the NFL.

  47. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Although I agree that it was time for him to move on…

I definitely take no joy in seeing Dirk Koetter lose his job.
I like the guy and enjoyed having him around here.

Good luck to you, Dirk, and thank you for the 3yrs of service.

  48. Mike Johnson Says:

Good luck Dirk. Its kinda hard to feel sorry for a man who will still be paid millions in 2019. He’s ok. But most of his caoching staff was on a yr to yr salary. They are the..Hit ones. I don’t think Arians comes to the Bucs. We shall see. There are 6 HC firings on this Monday before Noon. Good luck us our search. Hope we get a
    good one.

  49. Oneilbucs Says:

Man we have now only have 1 black coach in the NFL. That is a shame. 1 coach got 1 year and the other had 2 years. So don’t tell me that race ain’t got nothing to do with it cause it does. The Redskins coach suck but he’s white the 49ers head coach is nothing more than a oc . Cardwell was 9and 7 and he got fired for being 9 n 7 . Lovie got fired he was 10 n 6 at Chicago. That’s why I’m glad we kept Jamies cause it proves that his skin color have a lot to do with the hate . All I want is a fair league for all people of color rather you are white or brown or black it doesn’t matter what the position is on the field. But this is black Monday for real. Kurt Cousins is trash and the national media push RG3 out for him and he is trash . So call a race card all yall want but there’s your proof.

  50. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

Jackson undermined Winston from the minute he arrived. Winston didn’t want to throw him the long ball, or any ball, as Jameis is a proud man. Remember the sideline spat in pre season last year. He darn well hits everyone else.
