“Shame On You”

December 21st, 2018

Mike Alstott expressed his Bucs passion and frustration this week

Mike Alstott is nearly always a mild-mannered, say-little-of-substance kind of guy when he’s talking to media.

But that changed this week in a moment of Bucs conversation.

The A-train himself hopped on WDAE-AM 620 and was asked about his beloved Bucs. Specifically, the notion was floated to Alstott that Bucs players will be fighting hard to put good film out there over the past two games to help preserve their jobs.

That rankled Alstott and his passion for the game jumped out.

“If that’s the conversation for the last two weeks of the season, ‘you want to put something good on tape,’ you know, shame on you,” Alstott said. “You should have been putting stuff on tape for the last 17 weeks, you know, I don’t buy into that.

“As soon as you cross that white line, you’re going to put stuff on tape. It’s either you’re here or your not, the last two weeks are not going to save your job. I’m sorry about that. … I’m not saying they’re doing it or not, but if that’s the mind-frame, and if you’re an athlete, then you’re in the wrong occupation.”

Bravo! Blow that A-train whistle! (Damn, that whistle fired Joe up.)

Alstott went on to rave about the Bucs’ talent and he shared his frustration of watching the team make “great strides” this season but prove to be far too inconsistent. Tampa Bay’s lead and collapse against the Saints two games ago particularly seemed to get to him.

“Where’s the continuity? Where’s the chemistry? Where’s it at?” Alstott asked rhetorically. “You had your leading position, just from the get-go obviously not there. And you have to go to someone else and then you have to go back to him and then it’s just not flowing.”

Consistency and chemistry are the Bucs’ biggest needs, Alstott noted, after cautioning fans not to discount how injuries impact a team.

    Truth !
however we have seen quit before on other Buc teams since #40 played…we have just about seen it all other than winning attitude…plenty of posturing and player “coached PR speak”…..this is why I like DJax…I had my doubts about him before he came to the Bucs and when he signed here….but he is %100 Pro !

  2. Dre Says:

Love Alstott … well said A-train

  3. Dewey Selmon Says:

Well it’s going to take time now to have any chemistry, we’re fixing to have a major roster turnover.

  4. Buc believer Says:

Man oh Man those were the days!!

  5. Eric Says:

How many vikings tried to tackle him?

It’s getting real frustrating!!! To know the media is asking those kinds of questions because it is on THEIR minds. Players and coaches don’t come up with the storylines, every year when our playoff hope end the media in this town have asked that question for a decade. It’s not new but acting like you weren’t asking the question Alstott blew up is new. Been really fake around here the last couple weeks

Whaaat? Joe has heard countless active and retired players and personnel executives talk over the years about playing for all 32 teams in final games or preseason games. Scouts talk about seeing how guys perform when their team is out of it as a barometer to how much a guy loves football. Alstott doesn’t like the whole premise, which is inspiring, authentic and fun to hear. Would you rather Joe not share Alstott’s take?–Joe

  8. Season Is Over Says:

  9. lokog Says:

man I miss those days when feared our d

  10. Ray Rice Says:

He might be talking to Ronald “they hate me” Jones. Got that Ron Ron? Either you put it in tape or go fetch boxes for Amazon.

  11. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Only thing these players worried about is not collecting another paycheck

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    i agree….

the last 2 weeks aint going to save jobs for everyone……its about the first 15 weeks….

the previous regime went 6-10 in their final season….will dirk get to 6wins or finish with back to back 5-11 seasons?….im thinking 5-11 again….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#ADIOSDIRK!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Well, I guess we know what Mike would think about tanking for a better draft position……

Only losers with a losing culture believe losing is a good thing.

  14. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

@Season,,, I think it’s apples and oranges. #40 is referring to guys choosing whether to work hard or to mail it in. — We never have to worry that JW is mailing it in, and he works relentlessly.

I wonder who the HE|| he’s talking about?

“The Season Jameis Killed Coach Koetter”

  16. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Nah Jean, for Koetter (much as I like him personally), it was definitely self inflicted.

  17. Jean Lafitte Says:

speaking of “mailing it in”. I wonder how many of you turd fans would like to see us lose for the draft? How’s that any different than what players are being accused of?

  18. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ On that one, JL, we are in 100% agreement.

  19. ATrain Says:

    Yep

    That’s the MAN

Maybe hire ATrain to coach some heart

    That Guy is a BEAST

  20. ATrain Says:

    Ummm

How long will this ATrain be on The Posting Check list

  21. BrianBucs Says:

Wow, I really miss those glory days of the A Train, Barber, Lynch, Sapp and Double Nickel.
Would love to see those days return, but with the players, coaches and GM they have now, it would be impossible.
Be patient Bucs fans. Hopefully the glory days will return in a few years.
Oh, and look at the number of Pro Bowlers those teams turned out every year……

  22. Lewis Says:

I dont like this coach i didnt like the way he got the tampa job just ask lovie smith this coach has failed at every turn he has nothing left to offer this team or this town coaching changes are not what anyone wanted , but its all thats left .

  23. tmaxcon Says:

    BrianBucs

only a low standard fan would consider the pathetic 2 playoff wins in 6 years under dungy the clown and gruden’s only glory year Glory Days… Cowboys, Steelers, 49er’s, Packers they have had Glory Days bucs have had 2 good years in 42….. rewriting history out of fear of reality sad.

it’s a shame that the ignorant 1 dimensional dungy the clown did not understand the offense. he wasted so much talent in both indy and tampa. what a crying shame for those men to have their careers wasted by such a fool…

  24. Destinjohnnn Says:

    We never used mike properly
    What a talent he was
    40,55,99,47,20 forever

  25. Ndog Says:

BrianBucs most of the talent is on the roster we just need a good coaching staff to bring it out of them. Think about it, when is the last we have seen a screen pass or a quick flip for a TD. Or on defense when is the last time we saw a saftey or corner get a sack? We are playing 70s style football in 2018.

  26. pelbuc Says:

Really miss A train, Dunn Lynch, Barber, Sapp , Brooks, and all the other high character guys. Thanks to Licht all we have left are a bunch of clowns.

  27. Ndog Says:

I implore you guys watch other teams play and you will quicky discover we are not helping out our players in any way shape or form. Why do you think players like McDougal, Sweezy, Verner, Jackson, Curry, Allen, Jensen, and countless others are more productive elsewhere? You think all of a sudden they suck when they get here or maybe just maybe our coaching staff full a guys who have never won anything aren’t very good?

  28. Ndog Says:

And BTW Jameis biggest weakness will walking out of the building the second Koetter is fired. He my friends is Jameis’s biggest weakness by far. If this team hires the right coach next year COULD BE very fun.

  29. tmaxcon Says:

    pelbuc

you might be the first person on planet earth to use the useless term high character and sapp in the same post. congrats… I love me some sapp best player in franchise history by far and he carried 55 and the rest of the underachievers. however, you might want to review the super bowl rosters off-field accomplishments prior to rewriting history with unqualified high character comments. talent wins in the nfl not bs character crap nor being good in the community…. stomping your opponent each and every Sunday is all that matters. it’s sports not the moral compass for the mentally weak.

Before you rip Licht and our current players too much I ask you to consider how good we’re those same players you listed above for Sam Wyche minus Dunn and Barber of course?

  31. FortMyersDave Says:

Good point Ndog. There was a big difference between the defense under Floyd Peters and Wyche as opposed to Monte…… Sometimes coaching makes all the difference which is the key reason why Koetter has to f’in go…..

  32. BucGator Says:

He needs to be our next RB coach. He has been coaching for a while and he has worked with current elite RBs. He was Kareem Hunt’s personal coach when he was training at IMG in the offseason.

  33. Jeagan1999 Says:

If only we had another big, bruising back on this team like Mike!! This offense seems to lack the physicality that Alstott brought to the table.

  34. jjbucfan Says:

I give every player a pass because IMO, these coaches were THAT bad. Just Sayin’

  35. down in the dirt Doug Says:

Mike would bring toughness and honor to our team.Sure wish he could join our team in some capacity.

  36. Calbucsfan Says:

Nice article Joe, makes me want to go upstairs and dust off my Buccaneers Super Bowl helmet autographed by Alstott and wear it while watching them stomp on them Cow(ard)boys on Sunday!

  37. TOM Says:

    Alstott should be RB coach.
