Risky Koetter

December 5th, 2018

“‘Monk,’ I heard a wise old owl once say, ‘No risk it, no biscuit.'”

So you think Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching, yams-eating coach Dirk Koetter is too conservative, eh?

Think again. Per the research of the NFL, no NFL coach in the past 10 years has gone for a first down on a fourth-and-one situation more than Koetter.

The NFL put out a graphic that demonstrates just how often coaches roll the dice in that situation. Koetter is at the top of the list. You can see the graphic below.

Oddly enough, a guy that had a monster reputation for being conservative, Lovie Smith, was in reality just the opposite. Only seven coaches in the past decade have gone for a first down on fourth-and-one more than Lovie did (obviously, Koetter is among that group of seven).

Three of the top six coaches who go for a first down on fourth-and-one reside in the NFC South. There is Koetter, Dan Quinn of the Dixie Chicks, and Sean Payton of the Saints.

What is funny to Joe is Jeff Fisher is second-last.

It is strange to feel so confident that the Bucs will convert on 3rd and long after living through the 90s and the 00s.

  2. Buc-n-Idaho Says:

Misleading stat. Losing teams have to go for it on 4th because their trying to come back.

  3. Mr Kleen Says:

    @Buc-n-Idaho ^^^^^ Bingo

  4. Larry Says:

Koetter seems to be a good enough OC but NOT that good as a Head Coach.

  5. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I don’t see how this is misleading at all.
Plenty of teams trail a lot, that doesn’t mean they go for it this high of a percentage. I think Dirk just knows it is hard to stop a team from getting a yard, especially when there is no end zone to shrink the field.

  6. DalvinCookRules Says:

True, Larry. Although, even as an OC he is very inconsistent.

  7. adam from ny Says:

if we beat the saints this weekend and koetter does some “three stooges type smackeroos” upside sean payton’s head during the post game handshake, then dirk is the man!

So, using your logic, the Saints and Eagles are always losing and playing from behind?

You guys are so desperate to fire Koetter it’s downright stupid. Two game winning streak, one against a rival, and you’re reaching for anything to attack Koetter.

This is the best this team has looked since Gruden got fired. We’d be stupid to throw that away

    Buc in Idaho,

Misleading…….No. stats are measurements nothing more nothing less. It”s impossible to be misleading. Utility is the issue and it’s not useful which is entirely different from misleading.

If you hadn’t been so quick to dismiss the data by labelling it misleading, you may have noticed , the reason you offered up as explanation for the results , is accounted for and any peaks and valleys that create an outlier are reduced to a single standard deviation.

Since the always behind notion isn’t validated as both frequency and span reject the possibility that you’re correct . The data analysis is completed. The facts are verified and the results are conclusive……You Sir….you are misleading.

That’s what happens when you lack a good kicker for years.

  12. Phil Says:

Well that’s because we are losing at the end of games and we have to go for it on fourth down to have a chance. It usually doesn’t work out as far as winning the game goes.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I find it interesting that three of the top in this category come from the NFC South…..Koetter, Quinn & Payton.

  14. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Better more meaningful stat is winning percentage

  15. AlteredEgo Says:

Whats up with the reoccurring disparaging intro when referring to Koetter ?

  16. Warthog Says:

You’ve heard of Riverboat Ron, now get ready for Keno Koetter!

  17. Eric Says:

Koetter is learning to coach better.

Jameies is learning to play better.

Defense is holding teams to around half the points per game as earlier in the year. Duffner has their attention.

    Our draft looks better.

    Keep this up bucs!

I don’t want to go through another rebuild.

    western

we’ve heard that “best team since gruden” or “best offense ever” phrase for 3years now…..and still have nothing but a bunch of loses and excuses to show for it…..

    dirk has to go…..

  19. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Idaho, it’s not a misleading stat when the defending SB winning coach is right behind Koetter.
