No Quit

December 18th, 2018

Discusses players quitting.

These are sad days.

No, Joe’s not talking about his grinch ways (perhaps Joe’s second-favorite day of the year is Dec. 26).

Look, just about everyone associated with the Bucs knows Dirk Koetter is twisting in the wind. His team has secured yet another losing season. Rumors in NFL backchannels bring word Team Glazer is already gathering information to hire a new coach. A respected veteran player has said he’s going to start looking out for No. 1 and is not worried about trying to save Koetter.

In two weeks, Koetter will face the NFL’s coaching guillotine.

So in his weekly exclusive sitdown with Koetter, Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV Channel 8 asked Koetter if he was concerned players would mail it in these next two weeks. Lucas asked Koetter if he has enough veteran leadership on the team to ensure players don’t quit and instead fight to the bitter end.

“I don’t have too much doubt they will do that,” Koetter said of playing 100 percent in the final two games. “It starts with your best players. When your best players are giving their best it makes it pretty tough for everybody else to not follow along. There has been nothing I have seen from any of these guys that makes me think there will be any quit in them.”

This is sort of a Catch-22 for Koetter. If too many of his players tank, that just adds coal to the fire for him to be replaced. People will say he lost the locker room.

On the other hand, if the Bucs ball out and win the final two games and perhaps screw up their draft selection slot, people will ask Koetter why he couldn’t motivate his team earlier.

You can enjoy the full video of Lucas’ sitdown with Koetter below, video courtesy of WFLA-TV Channel 8.

    I’m ok with either McCarthy or Harbaugh being the new head coach. McCarthy can coach Jamies up to be Aaron Rodgers, or Harbaugh can bring in a defense that can babysit Jamies’s poor second half performances

  2. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

    LMAO! Just like they have balling out the last 2 weeks….what a joke!

  3. John B Says:

    J Elliott, Isiah Johnson, A Adams, Riley Bullough, D Bond

    Here’s half your starting D

    It doesn’t matter how hard they play, they are just not good enough

    our depth is atrocious

  4. Tony G Says:

    Dead man walking. They just fired one of their team managers next one in 2weeks.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    if the Bucs ball out and win the final two games and perhaps screw up their draft selection slot,

    I find it interesting that we have an article on the many draft misses from last night’s game and next we have an article about protecting our draft position.

    Protecting a draft position is the definition of a losing culture. Don’t fall into that trap JBF readers…..root for your team no matter what. It’s the right thing to do and it feels better.

    If you want to root for a new GM who makes better selections…join me.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

    @TBBF … “If you want to root for a new GM who makes better selections…join me.”

    OK TBBF, we now have a ‘Gang of Two’. Maybe more would join if we had a catchy name like ‘Stick Carriers’? Hmmm, maybe ‘Licht’s Out’? Nah, surely we can come out with something better.

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

    Are we supposed to be impressed that the players haven’t “quit”?! I mean, seriously?!

    !!!

  8. Bucsfanman Says:

  9. Mann in Memphis Says:

    I got 2 words for ya…. VIC FANGIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

    “If the Teflon Gump comes back, Kobe thinks that huge percentage of the fanbase will leave…

    Kobe is beginning to believe that team glazer thinks if they only fire Koetter and keep Gump, that the fanbase will be satisfied…

    If that is the direction the Glazers are going, which Kobe thinks they are, its going to be mighty quiet at RJS and JBF”

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

    “Good night Licht!”

  13. Conte Piscatelli Says:

    Don’t look now, but the Glazers just fired a coach in mid season.

    Unfortunately, it was at Man United

  14. wombat Says:

    If this team is prepared to pay Winston $20m, then call Belacheats agent and offer him $20m a season to be football manager/coach. Brady and crew are past their prime, if any one can get something out of Jameis, it would be him.
    Oh, and FIRE LICHT!!!

  15. AlteredEgo Says:

    If blame is to fall …it is Licht ….of course the coach gets the blame for all the swings and misses on high round draft picks…..
    i still say as difficult as it may be…Keep K&L and of course Jamyth for next season…Koetter’s offense was just FINE with a QB that could hit his WR’s in stride and deep…until the turnover competition @ QB between Fitz and Jamyth began

    Patience Coach Hoppers…

  16. Tampabucfan88 Says:

    I said it before I say it again river boat Ron will be the Bucs head coach next year I promise that

  17. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Fans and media need to get rid of the loser mentality of valuing draft position over wins as well

    Idiotic

  18. Not there yet Says:

    Not sure what the point is here because Koetter is done and it doesn’t matter if the players quit on him or not, I bet they play hard every week so his firing has nothing to do with players effort. Stop with the crazy talk

    Now on to the two elder statesmen and both of them are kinda stupid because Lamar Jackson only weapon is run. I’m sure it was like playing mike Vick to Geraldine because he only had 3 tackles with all the running that team did.

    When the new coach comes in Demar Dotson and Geraldine should be cut just based on interviews alone. Looking out for number 1. New coach says check get that guy outta here and Geraldine is good and all but not a 13 mil player. Cut see ya thanks for the forgetful memories but time to cut the cord

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

    Cutting Dotson and GMC does not “fix” this football team. Their time might be done but, they are not the reason we stink! Part, but not all.
    Leadership, or lack thereof, always starts at the top.

  20. Not there yet Says:

    The mantra that was used all offseason and before the start of the season has been forgotten. “NO EXCUSES “ none especially when you start off 2-0 and by beating the saints and eagles. 2 teams who turn it on at the end of the season because they have good coaching simple as that. I don’t want to hear any excuses about the players not being able to do what you asked them because that wasn’t a problem early in the season and dirk was all smiles but now he’s got that lame excuse and I don’t want to hear it I just want him Geraldine and any other weak minded players outta here

  21. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

    1) Nick Saban – Total control of all football operations
    2) Get Khai Harley of the Saints and give him the keys of football operations and have him hire the coach….like freddie kitchens, eric bienemy if you go for offense or vic fangio or jim schwartz
    3) Rich Mckay to build the team backup the guy knows football and has had success all over, not sure he wants to come back

    Time for licht to git

    Licht haters club

    Lichtphobia

    Loser licht

    Aguayos daddy

    New GM club

    Licht love lost group

    New GM or else club

  23. zzbuc Says:

    you nailed it John B!!!!
    Is a matter of talent, whye on earth you will bring a defensive mind coach with the players you have on that side of the ball!!!! Is a matter of talent and this team has low talent and is mainly on the wr´s and te´s…..JPP sporadic plays on LB and that´s mainly it!!!!!
    It´s a matter of GM!!!!!!

  24. Defense Rules Says:

    Ghost, too many choices for JBFers (we have a hard time making choices). Definitely like something with ‘Night’ and ‘Licht’ in it … it has a nice ring to it. Maybe ‘Good Night Licht’? In any event, whether we count 3 or 4 or 5 years, that’s been more than enough time to get this team headed in the right direction. And yet … we’re still treading water.

  25. Mr Lucky Says:

    Well compared to the winning Bucs during the Dungy era think about this – doesn’t todays defensive leaders, McCoy and David match or come close to Sapp, Brooks & Lynch? Even Rhonde Barber is better than the current bunch of “leaders”

    Sorry but a GM and coach can only do so much in the long run it’s the players who play or in our case who don’t play.

  26. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Rich McKay???

    Ha ha man this fanbase is so moronic and out of touch it’s not funny. The yearning to rehire players and former staff shows how low the football IQ of this fanbase is.

    For the record McKay has nothing to do with the falcons roster he’s there for business purposes not player acquisition hasn’t had a roster say in years

  27. Troy Says:

    Here’s my problem – we play in a crap division and have a crap record in that crap division. Only one team is above 500 and we’re 2-3, soon to be 2-4 in the division. The staff can’t even beat bad teams. They’re terrible on the road. Not much else to say.

  28. Joe Says:

    Here’s my problem – we play in a crap division and have a crap record in that crap division

    If the NFC South is a “crap division,” Joe would really like to see what a strong division is.

    Sad days why be sad Coach Dirt made millions of dollars to play Head football coach Wow what a dream come true /some of you fans that want another year of this God bless you .

  30. BrianBucs Says:

    I think with a lot of the players on the roster, it’s closer to what Dotson said. Guys are playing for their jobs, Every man for himself

  31. SOEbuc Says:

    Joe

    It’s probably very hard to do, but can you write an article or two about who a good president and/or GM would be? if you have heard any chatter at all or if you know who the Bucs might have a previous relationship with or just your flat out opinion of some names that might do a good job taking over the office.

    It’s going to start there if they wipe the slate and I’m getting a headache from these new HC names being written.

  32. Joe Says:

    It’s probably very hard to do, but can you write an article or two about who a good president and/or GM would be?

    Sure, if/when there is an opening.

    (For the record, and Joe has stated why on Ira’s pods, he is firmly and flatly against adding a layer of needless bureaucracy to the football wing of One Buc Palace. Besides, the Bucs already have such a person working at One Buc Palace. His name is “Jason Licht.”)

  33. jjbucfan Says:

    How has Koetter not been fired yet? again to quote Hillary, “at this point what does it matter?” Sad they sacked Mourinho but not Koetter, Man U much better than the Bucs this year. Both Coaches are complete D-Bags IMHO. I think Koetter is nice off the field or out from behind the podium, Mourinho not so much-he is a D-Bag at all times, LOL.

  34. SOEbuc Says:

    tampabucfan88

    “I said it before I say it again river boat Ron will be the Bucs head coach next year I promise that”

    He’s been number one on who I want. He’s a vet HC and player with playoff experience from one of the toughest teams in our division every year. Newton will likely be in the HOF at some point and him and Jameis are very similar in size and play style (now that Jameis is finally running). Great defensive HC.

    Numero Uno for the third Latino HC.

  35. Fire Light Says:

    Koetter discusses quitting. He should quit. Him and Licht. They are terrible and need to quit! Will be celebrating when those terrible at their jobs losers quit or get Fireeed! Where’s Mr. Spacely when you need him.. Jason… Yoooouuurree Fiirrrreeed! Fireeeeee Licht!

  36. Buccfan37 Says:

    “I don’t have too much doubt they will do that” says Koetter about Bucs giving 100 percent to close out season. That means he has some doubt.

  37. Mr Lucky Says:

    Maybe we can invite President Trump to a game and when the Bus lose the POTUS can go into the locker room and say, “Koetter you’re fired!”

  38. TOM Says:

    But it is up to the GM to draft & fine good FA to help out the HC. In this case for the most part Licht has failed with a few exceptions. So if your going to fire the HC you better fire the crap GM first.

  39. Hodad Says:

    No quit? The fans quit coming to the games, buying merchandise, quit caring about the Bucs. That’s the only quit the Glazers care about.

    I have to tell ya… I have actually been thinking about him lately too.

    I know it is an offense-first league right now, but I think you would have to give this guy some serious consideration.

  42. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    @GhostofSchiano

    Haha, LOVE the compiled list, man.

    “(Ron Rivera) has been number one on who I want.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    He would be a great choice. I find it hard to fathom that Carolina would let him go. I know the 6-game losing streak has been awful. But great coaches can bounce back from bad seasons.
  44. SOEbuc Says:
    Tampa Bay Demon
    True that. Newton has been battling a bad shoulder. But he’s been 0-4 in the playoffs, including a Super Bowl and division title. These owners just paid $2.2 billion. The most in NFL history. Panthers bounce around like others (except the Bucs) in the NFC South. He is a great coach, that’s why I want him, but with all new management I would think they would want to find someone of their own. Only reason he’s close to the hot seat.
  45. Bucsfanman Says:
    “Turn in your night Licht
    Let it shine so you can go
    Let it make a happy glow
    Turn in your night Licht
    In the middle of a Buc offseason
    Don’t turn around too soon
    We’re kickin’ ya to the moon
    Just you, not me”
  46. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    ^ Man… very interesting, SOE. – He would definitely be a great hire.
    Just asking you if they were to. And this “needless bureaucracy” starting with the owners and Jason Licht, have no clue on how to recruit a coaching staff. Glazer kids fired Gruden two years after they won the division title. Licht and Glazers then made that genius idea to hire the team’s first year OC Dirk Koetter of a team that went 6-10. Signed Smitty to a huge deal for him to almost make us the most points allowed in history. I don’t hate Licht as much as others. I think he’s a good scout and a good businessman but putting together a good coaching squad is his vice cus he’s had the opportunity since he arrived and there should of been major changes at coaching last year (not Koetter) after a 5-11 season of a third year HC.
