With The No. 5 Pick In The 2019 NFL Draft …

December 30th, 2018

Bucs GM Jason Licht

The Bucs fired Greg Schiano after he secured the No. 7 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Lovie Smith got the boot after he locked down the No. 9 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

And here we are, Bucs fans, fired Dirk Koetter has given Bucs fans the gift of the No. 5 overall pick, per NFL.com. Everything broke right for the Bucs today in various games tied to the draft order and pro-Bucs tiebreakers.

Yes, Jason Licht is still the guy drafting as of today.

The Cardinals, 49ers, Jets and Raiders, the teams that will draft Nos. 1-4, respectively, all have what appears to be stable quarterback situations. Of course, the Cardinals with a new head coach could decide to toss rookie QB Josh Rosen aside, but that’s unlikely.

The Tampa Bay quarterback situation may feel stable with America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, entering the final year of his rookie contract at a very affordable $21 million. But the new Buccaneers head coach may have very different ideas about that. Team Glazer might, as well.

Joe will guarantee the Bucs will invest in scouting quarterbacks this year. And when you do that, there’s a chance you fall in love.

Of course, the Bucs have many other needs in a draft that appears to be loaded with defensive linemen. And what a gift if would be if the Bucs could find a true No. 1 cornerback.

Sitting pretty at No. 5 overall will make this a very intriguing draft season. And the Bucs didn’t even have to tank a game to get there.

  1. WalkdaPlank Says:

That’s the sad part, they didn’t have to tank yet got the same result.

And the man behind it all is still employed.

  2. Ray Rice Says:

I bet a dub these MF’s choose a 3-4 NT from Memphis Baptist University.

  3. Bird Says:

    Olivier

    Or best lineman

    [What is your problem?]

  4. Dan Says:

We have to draft an tackle at 5. What’s the point of investing in Winston if we have two awful tackles. Look at the turnaround the Colts made after they took Nelson. Luck barely got hit this year and he looked great. It all starts in the trenches and we have a chance to take the best olineman this year.

  5. Wright Says:

Defense deep draft (our need} and some QB needy teams behind us. That SCREAMS trade down special. Not only that, when teams are desperate in a year like this you can make them overpay a ransom. Make the call Licht, take these fools’ lunch money and more! #TradeDown

  6. Troy Says:

Licht trades up for a defensive tackle. Yeah, he’s that stupid.

  7. Loyaltotheend Says:

So what FSU player from a bad team will allthe fans clamor for us to draft?

  8. Bird Says:

    America

    Thanks Joe

  9. Bird Says:

    Olivier

  10. tnew Says:

Most likely teams will be trading up for the early picks and draft the QB, happens every season. At number 5, the player must be a playmaker. This is a loaded draft early at DT, unfortunately, that was what the Bucs did last season. Things will work out but I wouldn’t be surprised by another trade down or another DT.

  11. Destinjohnny Says:

Are the glazers really not going to fire this guy????
    This can’t be real wow

  12. Rick Says:

The only cb worth a top five pick is greedy.
I would love quinnin if he’s there but I doubt it. Oliver would be a nice consolation prize at the dt position.
Ferrell (de) is good but a bit of a reach at five.
Williams and long (ot) would be good. Williams>long.
    That’s realistic imo.

  13. Bird Says:

    Olivier

Hey yah. We got 5 or 6

We lost don’t hate best online
    We need a lot
[Bar is closed. Go to bed. — Joe]

  14. WeAreLost Says:

I am shocked Licht is still the G.M. Not cool, not cool.

  15. MadMax Says:

….DT Quinnen Williams or trade down a few spots for DT Christian Wilkins…..or if we really are looking for a QB, Daniel Jones after a trade down also…..recover that 3rd.

Winston does a PHENOMENAL job at coming through in garbage time. RIGHT NOW isnt garbage time….big decisions to make Mr. Licht.

  16. Wesley Says:

Can’t believe Licht didn’t get fired, this feels like a nightmare.

  17. RealBucFan Says:

Let’s get a competant coach, trade players, cut players, see where we are in March. Fun talk now, but man this franchise needs a strong leader at the head coaching position. We have paid our debt to the football gods on our handling of Dungy and Gruden, hopefully our sorrow and greed is now forgiven by the football gods, and they allow our franchise to get this one right. Please…….

  18. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

McCarthy lovers? He is going to the Browns.

  19. MadMax Says:

It starts in the trenches and our D is where we need the most help…..

  20. #1bucfan Says:

@dan. You couldn’t agree with you more. It’s funny all you hear is Winston can’t hit a receiver in stride but that’s what he did all day today anbthere is tape of it. Fix the coaching, trenches, an secondary an you’ll see a huge difference

  21. Bird Says:

    Sorry

    People kept giving me shots.
    1. Jameis looked good
    2, Carlton looked good
    3. Via is soon
    4. Mike Evans is pimping best we had.
    5, whitehead solid
    6- Adams ok
    7. Dude ..our running back is good

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Names to look out for at #5

    Possible Defensive Front *7 Additions
    • INTERIOR – Jeffery Simmons, Mississippi State
    • EDGE – Josh Allen, Kentucky
    • LINEBACKER – Devin White, LSU

  23. Bird Says:

Sorry. I tried to see what I posted

    Crazy party. Don’t hate.
    Who wants this
Jameis was.fine . Just some time let’s be elite

  24. OneBucPerson Says:

Greedy or Jonah, either fix up our DBs or fix up our O-line.

  25. lambchop Says:

Greedy Williams, Jonah Williams, Greg Little, Ed Oliver are in play.

  26. MadMax Says:

Just to point it out, Andrew Adams was looking good at CB today! He’s popped out a few times before too….keep that guy!!

  27. Fire Light Says:

With a top 5 pick and a developing team with young talent you have to shoot for the moon with the best talent at a tough position to fill. That’s usually big fast guys that are in the positive skinny part of the bell curve. Can’t coach size and speed combined. Hopefully Licht’s last move is to use his knowledge of the exiting the building of OBP. Fireeeee Licht!

I do not trust Licht nor any of the scouts at this point. The fans could draft better. Licht is to blame for so many inefficiencies on this team because of the variables in scouting and who he listened to. He’s either bad at his job or lazy. Firrrreeee Licht! And don’t take a word from the freaking PAC12 scouts.

  28. Pickgrin Says:

#5 would have been the choice between Chubb and Nelson this year. So two of the “big 3” were available at #5 this year – both of whom had monster rookie years (as did Barkley obviously). Point being we should get a really good player at #5 since we are not drafting a QB. Or maybe another trade down for extra pick(s)…

  29. Nate Says:

Ok….you dont reach for a CB or OL in THIS draft..your probowl guard Nelson was missed out on due to that last min saints win which got us so much better…..

This team better start drafting best available….especially at 5..your not gonna make top 5 but once a decade …..almost

  30. Nate Says:

People better slow on not drafting a qb
…haskins might be better …draft what you need with other high picks 2-7

@ let the best man win……FS fans you scared or nahhh lol

  31. Nate Says:

All you Jameis looked good people ….he faced a 26th rank defense and a team with one more win….not fooled n neither are the glazers…

They’ll keep Jameis for a prove it year..but you can bet your apologists @ss they will draft one …..

  32. Hodad Says:

He’ll probably trade up for the place kicker from Homboldt State. I hear he fell in love with him when he was scouting that future L.T., C, R.G., R.T., Cappa.

  33. MadMax Says:

@Nate, D line first, QB 2nd especially if Daniel Jones is there (he wont be though unless we move up)

  34. Fire Light Says:

Derwin James Jr was a good FSU player and has been a great pro! There is nothing wrong with picking local talent. The state of Florida disgusts me at this point after reading all of the ignorant comments posted by most on this site. Bash Jameis. Jameis this, Jameis that. BLAMEIS WINSTON… for the love of God, provide something to the conversation instead of being trolls.

  35. Pete I Says:

    Licht = 27-53
    Winston = 21-33
    Since Malcolm’s Stroke = 77 – 131
New HC = 0-0 (but he will have to coach Licht’s picks)

    Updated Resumes

  36. BucFan3 Says:

@Loyaltotheend – DERWIN JAMES. Said it before during and now after the season. Please try to rebuttal.

  37. Tval Says:

HASKINS???? Rofl!!!!!!!!!!! From c-bus, that gets a WOW!!!! The dude was nearly kicked off his freshman year, by URBAN MEYER!!! Hahahahahahaaaaaaaaa….and name the LAST buckeye qb worth anything, that didn’t play vanilla defenses and/or benefit from a MUCH better team, ala, bama. See what I did?. Lol

  38. Tval Says:

@ “loyal” sounds remedial. Brian Burns is a STUD!!! Like ^bucfan^ said, if you wouldn’t go back and take our advice on Derwin you are a moron who thinks beating Michigan is, somehow, special LOL!!! It’s not

  39. Tval Says:

And baker threw 3 picks vs Baltimore..AGAIN. Chubb, Njoku, and Landry(wentz trade) have MADE Baker..if he throws 40 times he has 3 interceptions…plus. Ask the Texans. Lol!! So, your point, Nate?? Because we know idiots would take Baker because ESPN says he’s “scrappy and tough”..lol!! The dude is garbage. I’m tired of nfl.com/espn fanboys providing nothing other than sucker for the moment nonsense. Go play madden and leave football to grown folks. You’ll be a dak fan tomorrow and hate wentz because he’s injury prone…and WHERES THE MARIOTA TALK?? We told you that injury prone sissy couldn’t play in the NFL…THE END!!!!

  40. Fire Light Says:

Derwin James Jr. will enevitably be the nail in Licht’s coffin. I do think Vea will pan out, but that’s not what this team needed. Fans hated Jameis enough and thought Mariota was the better pick. Fan divide. Then Licht goes local and pick VH3. Can’t blame him for that. Keep the locals happy. VH3 is a local guy from a FL school. No production and then injury. What I don’t get about the VH3 is while it appeased the Gator fans, it was just a bad selection. Licht’s head at this point has to be spinning! So he thinks outside of the box and get Vea. Then thinks he’s pulling off the best trade ever until he picked Vea and bombs on his second round picks that he got in return…. Licht should be fired. He doesn’t have it in him to make the right pick and sign the right players. I will not be shocked for it to comes out that Licht was in over his head and did the best he could. His best sucks. Fireeee Licht!

  41. Fire Light Says:

Whoever the Bucs pick needs to get along with Jameis and be ride or die Jameis. Jameis and Mike Evans have been the Bucs. Fireeee Licht!

  42. isrBuc Says:

Asking Licht to draft a second QB? Will he do that and admit major failure?
Bucs keeping Licht is a terrible mistake on so many levels.

  43. MadMax Says:

^ its a hard concept….i get it….but one thats palatable

  44. MadMax Says:

The good Jameis showed up today…..what do we have if bad JW shows up?….what do we have as a backup if he has one more off field issue?

  45. Pete I Says:

“When Jason Licht became the Bucs’ general manager, Tampa Bay was the worst team in the NFC South. Five years later, the Bucs are still the worst team in the South”

  46. Onetrickpony Says:

Why worry about the no. 5 pick?
Jason will screw it up,probably pick
    a new waterboy

  47. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Hey Joe , could you please get this guy Licht on the record about everything ROJO. I really want to hear him lay down those lies. Glazers blew it again.

  48. Jeagan1999 Says:

Draft Haskins or Lock as an insurance policy. Get Le’Veon Bell ( and sign big Ryan Nall off Bears practice squad). Use the rest of the Draft and free agency overhauling the offensive and defensive lines.

  49. PaulW Says:

In terms of draft need, I would argue our Offensive Tackle situation is worse than our DE or CB issues. Donovan Smith is just not cutting it as a pass blocker we need. JPP and Nassib are great veteran pickups for our pass-rush DE needs. And we drafted a couple of rookies this year who showed flashes of good cover skills who might do better under new coaching (plus, we should be able to find solid veteran corners in Free Agency this March).
If we can get a highly scouted OT at the fifth pick, I would argue in favor of getting one. a Franchise OT is just as valuable as a Franchise QB.

  50. BucInJax Says:

A tackle has to be the top priority.

  51. Cobraboy Says:

OL. Any other pick is malpractice.

  52. Easy Says:

    Jonah Williams

  53. Loyaltotheend Says:

    @Bucfan3

James was never gonna be the pick here. They took a safety in the 2nd in 2017. Teams don’t invest that many high picks on safeties, James was not healthy coming out of college and in this scheme no way he plays like he did with the Chargers.

Bucs don’t have a Bosa Ingram and a aggressive scheme like the Chargers do. Get over it.

Loser FSU fans keep harping on not drafting Cook and James there are other schools and prospects out there stop focusing on one school

  54. Alanbucsfan Says:

Jameis is 24 yrs old. His best years are ahead.
Draft elite Olinemen and get a head coach that knows how to scheme a running game.
Keep drafting trenches with top picks the next 2-3 years.
All the playoff teams have invested top picks in trench talent. The Bucs, for the most part, haven’t and that’s one reason they lose.

  55. joestang Says:

WTF how does Licht keep his job? This guy will screw up the entire draft and coaching selection. Licht is more of the problem than Koetter. Keeping Licht is a major problem, fire him before its to late.

  56. MTM Says:

Maybe Licht will trade that spot for 2- 3rd picks so he can draft another sh*ty kicker.

  57. Jonzey Says:

Get 1st Greedy Williams need a running back Justice Hill in the second

  58. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

@ Welsey “Can’t believe Licht didn’t get fired, this feels like a nightmare.”

I doubt Licht drafted Aguayo, Rojo or Vita Vea without Koetter’s or Mike Smith input. In fact I bet Koetter demanded Licht to find him the best kicker in the draft and then a running back in the 2nd. Smith no doubt wanted Vita Vea and the young CBs. While I like Vita Vea, my point being, GMs usually draft want the coaches want. I place the blame more on the coaches than Licht for our past bad drafts.

Licht has been great managing the salary cap without big signing bonuses. He has been alright with free agency and I think he does have an eye for talent. I am happy to keep him around for the final year of his contract.

  59. RickinFtMyers Says:

Enough with talking out of both sides of our mouths. Everyone always trots out the tired quote of it all starts up front, basically in the trenches on both offense and defense. Knock off the nonsense then and let’s use some high draft picks on offensive linemen, which is the area I see in most need of help with no credible right guard and an aging Demar Dotson at right tackle. On the defensive side of the neutral zone let’s spend some draft capital on a blue chip nose tackle to pair with Vita Vea at 3-technique now that he’s getting reps after his injury sidelined him for all of the preseason and three weeks of the regular season. Jason Licht and the Bucs should look to build two nasty lines, offensive and defensive, then worry about running backs and cornerbacks, after all it all starts up front.

  60. Mike Johnson Says:

Find us a terror at MLB or a great OL or DL guy. Or trade down..Get 2 for 1 baby!!

  61. Sunday_44 Says:

Quentin Nelson was an absolute beast in that game last night and worth every penny.

Indy went from having 1 of the worst O-Lines to the Absolute best Hands Down in one year and are in the playoffs.

This line run blocks awesome and NOBODY hardly ever touches Andrew Luck.

ANYBODY can run through the holes they are creating, yet somehow, all everyone seems to be talking about are QBs and RBs and CBs and Safeties.

Weapons for Winston should have been 5 shinny O-Lineman.

What a joke this franchise is.

And if the Bucs don’t take a serious look at Josh Jacobs from Alabama as RB in the 2nd, they are ignorant.

  62. Bucs Guy Says:

Let’s talk about realites, not what you wish happens.
    1. Licht is staying for another year at least.
    2. If Jameis is staying, the Bucs aren’t picking a QB in the early rounds,
    3. The #5 pick is dependent upon if the Bucs keep McCoy or Donovan Smith. I doubt the Bucs will keep or get rid of both. So whichever is gone is the position the Bucs will target at #5.
    4. The Bucs should go after the other in the second or possibly DE.
    5. Bucs should target secondary, Guard and maybe Running Back in FA.
    6. DJax will be gone, so the Bucs may look for a speedy receiver in the 3rd or 4th round.
