Koetter, Monken Should Go Down Swinging

December 16th, 2018

“Let’s let it rip, Monk.”

A handful of weeks before Dirk Koetter called his first game as Buccaneers head coach, he shared the coaching advice of one his idols.

Throw deep!”

The man who told Koetter that was Bengals head coach and former Ravens defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis. (You can read that old story and the reasoning behind it via the link above.)

Fast forward about 2 1/2 years to today’s game, and former NFL team scout and current NFL Draft guru Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network wants Koetter to heed that advice.

Jeremiah previewed the Bucs-Ravens game on his Move The Sticks podcast and was adamant that the Bucs should throw deep on the Ravens early and often. He’s convinced the Ravens are tired after their emotional, overtime loss to the Chiefs last week and the Bucs should play to their strength at receiver.

Ironically, Jeremiah thinks the Bucs will jump out fast on the Ravens and flex their offensive firepower but ultimately will lose the game in the second half.

“You literally have nothing to lose,” Jeremiah said of the Bucs taking a highly aggressive offensive approach against the Ravens.

Former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher was on CBS Sports Radio last week and reiterated a theme of Jeremiah’s: December is when you play to your team’s strengths.

So Joe wonders, is the Bucs’ strength still throwing deep and pushing the ball down the field?

That’s an unknown after watching them the past few weeks. And of course, throwing deep effectively requires strong pass blocking, especially against the fierce Ravens pass rush. And that was nowhere to be found last Sunday.

Jameis can’t throw deep. Who are these talking heads? They obviously haven’t watched Jameis throw deep for the past 4 years.

Bill Cowher for President and GM.

  3. Jason Elliott Says:

Sumo is correct. Has anyone figured out how many games we have lost because Jameis missed open receivers downfield.

Yeah you’re right Jameis can’t throw deep at all. Look at all those horrible throws above.

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Wentz
    Mariota
    Watson
    Tribusky

What do all these players have in common?

    * They were drafted after Winston
    * They are playing better
    * They have more accuracy and touch throwing
    * They can throw a deep ball accurately
    * They have or are going to the playoffs

FACE IT BUCS Fans…………….WINSTON is not a franchise QB

  8. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Oh

And how did I forget about Patrick Mahomes…….. Silly me?

    Oh yeah

    Also Goff………

    Yeah….. And we got Jaymiss

  9. SOEbuc Says:

    bucsnole

Exactly what I’ve been thinking since I saw the Ravens had a bit of a banged up secondary on a rainy day. Could be a Humpries day.

  10. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Jameis has gone mental….. Cause he knows all those QBs I mentioned above are out playing him

Even though Jaymiss have all the physical talents to be better……

Bucs fans got screwed with Jaymiss……….

  11. RyJo Says:

I don’t know, Joe. For Jameis to throw deep, he needs the O-line to protect him long enough for receivers to get where they need to be. Do YOU trust the O-line to do that? I don’t.

  12. Jeff Says:

Slow your roll JW haters. JW is playing great at the moment. Just ask yourself, how would these other young QB’s do with this O line and zero running game. All hail Winston! The savior of the franchise! Bring in a good coach and watch him soar!

Again you are just showing how clueless you truly are.

The only one of those 3 playing better than Jameis is Watson. Dude you hate him so much you are either blind to the truth or the most clueless football fan to ever live if you think Tribusky is on the same planet as Jameis. Going to the playoffs doesn’t mean you are playing well as a player. That team is 95% defense 4% running game a 1% gimmick. But people, who know nothing about football, like you think the QB is why they are winning. Wentz is HURT AGAIN and is not playing well yet you think is the man.

  14. Hodad Says:

Throwing deep requires the O line to protect longer, good luck with that.

Correct we are screwed because we have people like you claming to be a fan of our team. You make us all look bad.

  16. Buc4life Says:

Thank you Ndog. Too many clueless so-called Bucs fans. We have No running game, offensive line is terrible and some of you are still blaming Jameis. I will say our defense is playing better but our LBs have been hurt all year and are still using patch-work DBs.

  17. John B Says:

Better rethink that Joe, no way we can protect for the deep ball game – better have a ton of slants, hitches, screens – they are going to bring the heat early and often, we have proven we can’t protect any of our QB’s

  18. SOEbuc Says:

Jameis haters sounding like they ran full speed into the wall in the back of the end zone. He’s been playing his best football since he threw back to back 4,000+ yards in his rookie and sophomore seasons two years ago. Very funny these same haters also want the coaching staff and front office that he’s been with for his first for years to be sent to the fiery pits of hell. Idiots.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

BS……short passes to Hump and the backs…..use Rojo today……deep only on occasion. Jameis isn’t accurate deep…..get some YAC with Hump & Godwin.

The key to this game will be how our defense holds up……and containing Jackson.

  20. Ndog Says:

Yeah this guy doesn’t even realize that during the first game Goff had this year where they couldn’t run the ball at will he threw for 180 yards 0 TDs and 4 picks and that was just last week. See this is what these people don’t realize, Jameis is being asked to do more than any other QB in the league because we cannot run at all AND run a vertical offense which normally goes well with a good to great running game, like the Rams run. So let’s see we can’t run the ball, we can’t block all that well, we can’t make FGs and our defense is one of the worst in the league, but go win anyways QB it is 100 on you.

  21. SOEbuc Says:

Jameis haters sound like they ran into a brick wall in the back of the end zone. Playing his best game of his short career since he went rookie and sophomore back to back 4,000+ yards a couple years ago. And they want the coaching and front office he’s worked since a rookie to be Mr. Cleaned. Thinking like a Dirk Koetter game plan.

  22. Reach87 Says:

Ndog thanks for the truth. Most ignorant fans ever. Fascinating how they just make stuff up, and claim to be fans. Go Bucs!

  23. ben Says:

Winston is not accurate leading receivers but only throwing to a spot…Bucs have great receivers (best ever) and a qb’s main job is to be accurate…..no matter where he went to school!!

  24. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Ndog

    You’re a clueless Jameis lover………..

Keep on making excuses for this non franchise QB

Keep on dreaming that one day he’ll lead this team to the playoffs

Keep on living in your fantasy land that’ll he’ll become accurate with deep passes

    Just keep dreaming bro……….

    One day you’ll wake up

  25. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ ben

It’s pointless saying anything to these Jameis apologists / lovers

They have EVERY EXCUSE in the book to justify Jameis for every single bad or poor thing he does

    It’s just all excuses……..

  26. Bculaw Says:

Jameis seems to throw a fine deep ball to any player not named Desean Jackson. Too bad our O-line can’t block or we might actually have a decent chance offensively.

Stretch the field – and by that, I mean that the Bucs should require the defense to try to cover the entire field. Vertical routes rule our game plan, but where are the screens and swing passes? Slants? If you can’t establish the run game (which we can’t), then at least keep the LBs honest with the short and intermediate routes to the RBs and slot receivers.

  27. Cgmaster27a Says:

Bucsanthem saying Mariota is better? My God man you’re dumb. I’m not even putting his stats up here as they are awful, and wentz has been average and is hurt again. We get it, you’re a trolling moron who disappears each week when jameis plays well.

  28. orlbucfan Says:

Shaking my head and done it all week. What happened in the second half? Best WR and TE corps in the league. Hope the O coaches can call an intelligent game.

  29. Sumo Says:

We would not be dealing with reality to say that Jameis is not playing better lately. He really is playing better and if he could somehow fix the accuracy of his long throws, he would be a very good QB. Possibly a top 10 in the league. We alI sure hope he can fix it. We now have 4 years invested in him.
