Jason Licht Would Not Endorse A Gerald McCoy Return

December 31st, 2018

General manager Jason Licht

Before a media throng at One Buc Palace today, general manager Jason Licht tossed around love for the “fantastic” coaching job Dirk Koetter did, and Licht was gushing about his QB returning in 2019.

Gerald McCoy? Licht offered no such adoration.

Licht was asked about McCoy’s future in Tampa and whether he’d be part of the Bucs’ plans. Licht wouldn’t say the magic word: “Yes.” He wouldn’t say that McCoy would return. The GM danced around the subject and said there “are a lot of tough decisions to make.”

OK.

McCoy is due $13 million next season. He has no plans on retiring, he said last night.

It sure smells like either Licht is planting the seeds to renegotiate McCoy’s contract, or Licht will look to trade McCoy as spring approaches.

  1. WalkdaPlank Says:

    McCoy is not elite

  2. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I don’t think there is any chance GMC plays here next year on his current deal.
If he won’t restructure, take anything you can get for him.
He is not the same dominant player he was a few years back. Great guy, good player but overpaid IMO.

  3. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Why do you think they drafted the big V last year?! Not a big surprise…..

  4. J Says:

    How is Licht still here

  5. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

.3375% of the time his team wins…why wouldn’t Licht be retained?!

  6. sandwichman Says:

    we are in footbal hell

  7. Pete I Says:

When Jason Licht became the Bucs’ general manager, Tampa Bay was the worst team in the NFC South. Five years later, the Bucs are still the worst team in the South

    Updated resumes:

    Licht = 27-53
    Winston = 21-33
    Since Malcolm’s Stroke = 77 – 131
New HC = 0-0 (but he will have to coach Licht’s picks)

The only dancing aroind Licht should be doing is that he kept his job…inexplicably.

  8. I know why Says:

If the coach did a “fantastic” job why would you fire him? Did a media member ask that? Did they ask Licht any really tough questions? Why do you get to be a part of three head coaches? Who are the best five players you have drafted to this point? This will be your 5th out of 6 years of starting the draft with a top 10 pick…

  9. Darin Says:

Yeah its a salary cap league. Jameis just hit the big time so guys will be going. I like McCoy but not at that cap hit. And yeah Vea was drafted for this. Lichts been planning this one a while. He had to endorse Jameis, Qbs are a bit harder to find at his level. Give him a running game and any semblance of a defense and he’ll be fine.

  10. Snook Says:

Of course McCoy isnt retiring. He only plays for the money. Good riddance.

  11. ben Says:

Licht is a BIG loser so why is he here ??..

  12. DB55 Says:

I just love the fact that his last “tackle” as a buc he got laid on his arse by a no name RB, befitting.

He wouldn’t last a day with Arians anyway.

McIceCream should go coach in the Legends of Football League were he belongs

Guard Engleheart is no longer a buc, HOOOO MF RAAAAAY!!!!

  13. Anonymous Says:

Give who a running game? Ronald Jones ring a bell?

  14. I know why Says:

Ronald Jones ring a bell….howd that work out?

  15. StoutGospel Says:

Ohh GREAT!!?! Now the Broncos are putting JOHN Harbaugh at the top of their shopping list, according to PFT! Like it wasn’t bad enough with a determined multi-billionaire down in South Beach wanting JOHN Harbaugh to overhaul his enterprise, now we have to deal with the history of Elway and the resource of the Broncos to lure Harbaugh–JOHN!!

    This SUX…..

Joel…Bryan….Ed…Avie…hell even Darcie….can WE please land JOHN Harbaugh??! Just tell Licht and KORN FERRY to prioritize him.

    One can hope…

  16. Buc believer Says:

First and only smart thing Jason Gump has ever said.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jason Licht Would Not Endorse A Gerald McCoy Release or Trade.

  18. Bucsdelight Says:

Ok, so we are looking at either a restructuring or could we be looking at trading up in the draft for Bosa?

  19. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

Licht showing some stones for once

  20. Rick Says:

Win win in my opinion. Needless to say gmc’s play has declined. The Bucs are in a position to up grade in the draft and if he restructures, we can spend that money on filling another hole! WIN WIN!

  21. rrsrq Says:

The DT draft is deep enough, possibly find a good player in second or third round, especially since Vea has upped his game. Only issue is this, GMC has said, there were no vets around to show him the ropes, as long as JPP is here and maybe keep Beau Allen, go get his replacement. If not Ed Oliver in the first, Gerald Willis in the second

  22. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

Even Jason Licht knows Gerald McCoy is a big fat softie

  23. Wesley Says:

Try to re-work his deal. It’s not like he’s a bad player, he’s just not worth his current salary.

  24. Buc believer Says:

He wants to save cap space for the long snapper and the holder he plans on drafting in the first and second round.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Darin

I’ve been saying that for some time now….give Jameis a defense and a running game and he will be fine.

I’m all for trying to restructure GMC…..nothing to lose by trying….if he won’t, trade him….he’d make a good draft-day trade.

We need to sign Hump….he is exactly the type of player we need to keep.

  26. ed Says:

JPP, Nassib and Vea are the only D-line players that could start on other teams, Gholston, McCoy, Allen and Curry are overpaid and certainly replaceable

  27. Not there yet Says:

Trade or cut bait or you’ll be fired megan

  28. nwbucsfan Says:

“we are in football hell” – sandwich man

    Amen

  29. Joe In Michigan Says:

Jason said he’s confident that we’ll hire a “very, very good football coach”. Does that mean we can cross Jack Del Rio and Jim Caldwell off the list?

  30. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Can’t even believe this dude is still here.

  31. Loyaltotheend Says:

Gives me confidence Licht isn’t as bad as I thought or his record indicates

  32. D-Rome Says:

The Buccaneers need to get younger on the defensive line. For as great as JPP was, they already need to find his replacement.

  33. Wausa Says:

I’d love for the Bucs to have McCoy back at about half his contract amount

  34. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We can easily and will most likely have everyone on this roster under 30…

GMC, Curry, Fitz, Djax, Dotson, Grimes (over 30)

    All will likely be gone…

Only remaining over 30 players would be Anger & LS Sanborn

    That is very encouraging…….

  35. Matts17 Says:

I wouldn’t trust Licht to run my bath let alone a pro football team.

  36. SOEbuc Says:

    ed

Allen and Curry won a Super Bowl last year. I’m sure someone could find room for them to start. They’re both good players. Curry’s overpaid at $8 million/year (I’d say six mill/yr). And Allen is known as a locker room leader and is good and he plays well rotating with Vea.

  37. Defense Rules Says:

@D-Rome … “The Buccaneers need to get younger on the defensive line. For as great as JPP was, they already need to find his replacement.” Yea verily D-Rome. Far too many (including Licht) don’t seem to grasp the concept of PLANNING AHEAD. Quality GMs draft guys not necessarily as starters but rather to be key replacements in their first year or two. Learn from the vets … then replace those same vets. Raheem had it right IMO … “Tolerate you until I can replace you.”

Far as GMC goes, Bucs NEED him on our DLine, BUT … only if he’s willing to renegotiate his contract. And I feel confident that he would (who else but the Bucs would pay $13 mil for a good-but-no-longer-elite 31-year-old DT?). We already need to replace Unrein (can’t forget about him), BUT … given our other NEEDS, we can’t afford to use a high draft pick on yet another DT (DE is a bigger NEED right now on our DLine IMO). Get rid of GMC & we’d need to add TWO DTs this off-season.

  38. J Says:

Bucs need to tank for Tua. Can’t though now thanks to clown shoes gm

  39. WalkdaPlank Says:

Enough with you Tua maniacs. He’s not pro QB material.

  40. ElioT Says:

Please for the love of god, trade McCoy while he has SOME value.

The guys is the “leader” of many of the most horrific defenses we’ve ever seen.

You hate to ever get rid of talented football players but it’s never going to work here in Tampa for McCoy. He didn’t flourish this year with arguably the most talent around him that any sane person could ever expect, and it’s clear that his time is done in Tampa.

Trade him to a contender who needs a good DT and already has a real leader on defense so Gerald doesn’t have to fake it anymore. Perhaps the guy can move on and experience some real winning before his career is over, he deserves that much.

The guy has been mentally beaten down just as much as he has been physically and #lichmyb*lls must cleanse this roster of the guys who are simply used to losing and don’t have what it takes to make it stop.

As much as I like Lavonte, I feel he may be in the same boat.

Neither McCoy or David have even stepped up and taken it upon themselves to say “this bullsh*t stops today! We aren’t going down like this any more.”

They’ve got to move on from the “here we go again” type guys regardless of their talent.

It sucks, but that is what we’ve been living with since the days of Sapp, Brooks, Lynch, etc.

    Let new leaders emerge.

    #lichtmyb*lls

  41. SOEbuc Says:

    ed

Speaking ed, Ed Oliver #5. This d-line will be so incredibly fast and powerful. He’s my top pick and with this statement by Licht today, sounds like he’s gonna try to trade GMC in the offseason. Quinenn Williams or Ed Oliver. Sweet.

  42. SOEbuc Says:

    *Speaking of ed

  43. Bobby M. Says:

See if he’ll renegotiate….he has value, just not $13 million. He’s not worth more then JPP, maybe 75% of what JPP makes…maybe. If not, see if a contending team will trade something for him. Let McCoy experience winning and we get something in return. Licht really screwed the pooch on this…we should have unloaded McCoy and Jackson at the trade deadline this past year. McCoy was leading the charge on the worst defense in the NFL….technically you cant get any worse without the dude…if you suck, you suck. Jackson was of no use other then go routes. This is the type of stuff that makes me question Licht….he’s never ahead of the curve, he’s always chasing his tail. The good teams stay out in front in personnel and schemes. Licht built this team completely backwards….should have stacked the line and running game….We went with a “value” approach on the line and all in on receivers….Dumb. You cant really evaluate a young QB when your line is inconsistent and there’s no running game.

  44. OneBuc55 Says:

Imo, Licht is still here because ownership believes that the Bucs shortcomings this past 2 years were more of a coaching issue than a personnel issue…

Honestly, I believe that to be true to an extent…I personally think Dirk is a good football coach, just not HC material…I give you an example, yesterday with the game clock at about 2:35 with the Falcons attempting to run the clock out it’s 2nd and 1 and Dirk calls a timoeut…I couldn’t understand the logic of it; if it’s 2nd and 10 I understand, but the probability of coverting 2nd and 1 is almost a guarantee…Imho, it was just a total waste of a TO which would have been useful a little later…

I wish Dirk the best, and I’ll give him credit for 1 thing, I do believe that he laid the foundation for an offense thats going to be really good for a while moving forward…

  45. Zam Says:

Everything this team does just gets me sadder. Is there a bigger pack of nincompoops out there?

  46. adam from ny Says:

the turning point in our season was when conte got mushed and punked and frieght trained by vance mcdonald and the tough pittsburgh steelers on national tv for the world to see…

our response to that move at home was a double apology from gerald to big ben for touching him…wrong response by one of our leaders…he needed to run right thru ben as a statement…

so we buckled right there on MNF and never recovered…it was a wrap right there…mgmt. knew to get rid of conte right then and there…he was gone the next day…gerald probably should have been gone too…but now he knows he’s gone as well…that 10 minute stretch right there vs the steelers changed and defined the season on a grand scheme

  47. ElioT Says:

    2019 Stats:

    Gerald McCoy

    2018 Cap Hit: $12,750,000
    Games Played: 14
    Solo Tackles: 17
    Assists: 11
    Total: 28
    Sacks: 6
Impact Plays: ??? – I didn’t see any, and I watched every single snap.

Geno Atkins: $9,500,000 (*Prior to his extension)

    2018 Cap Hit: $
    Games Played: 16
    Solo Tackles: 24
    Assists: 21
    Total: 45
    Sacks: 10
    Impact Plays: Not sure.

    Hmmm…

  48. adam from ny Says:

they took the captain C off gerald’s chest this year…and will relocate it onto jpp’s chest next year

    #Factoids

  49. adam from ny Says:

gerald has been replaced by jpp and the development of vea on the d-line…the late development of vea sealed mccoy’s fate

  50. Mike Johnson Says:

Somebody in this league will pay McCoy and we all know it. And to be honest at his age, he should try to get as much paper as he can. Gerald knows the deal. He gave his farewell speech in front of his locker on Sunday afternoon.

  51. SOEbuc Says:

    Eliot

“As much as I like Lavonte, I feel he may be in the same boat.”

Whoaaaa. LVD is in the same boat as GMC??? 119 tkl, 3.5 sacks, 1 FF playing along a third/fourth string LB corp. all year. FAR FROM THE SAME BOAT! LVD is still a dominate LB but if he went to a good defensive team he could still be a no doubt Pro Bowl selection every year.

  52. adam from ny Says:

they can also most likely get rid of 2 of the following 3:

    gholston
    curry
    allen

allen gives good locker room banter – best thing he does
    gholston’s time is up
curry should be the keeper, but he is paid too much

  53. adam from ny Says:

gerald will get 10 mill somewhere as a role player on a playoff type team…he might have to trade in his batcave for a igloo in new england tho…that’s prolly why he was all weep-adocious at his locker

  54. ElioT Says:

I’m wondering if Beau Allen is gone at that $5,000,000 cap number or if he’ll renegotiate?

If Allen had gotten as many snaps as McCoy, would we have seen more from him? He did have 20 total tackles in 14 games.

Also, we haven’t seen anything from Mitch Unrein yet. I’m wondering if this guy could do something next to Vea as long as his brains aren’t scrambled from the concussion induced IR year.

Either way, draft a D-Tackle to eventually play along side Vea this year and also a D-End to develop behind JPP.

    #lichtmyb*lls

  55. adam from ny Says:

what about “no fuss mitch concuss” ???

  56. adam from ny Says:

that was a rough podium session between licht and the press…a lot of tough interface…as well as a whole lot of head and shoulder swaying…

    #WasLichtTryingToDoTheWop #DoTheWop #80sDanceMoves

  57. Whatinthebuchappend Says:

This move should have been done 3 years ago..also , every time there is a guy I really like in the draft that would be a cornerstone in our Dline we either pass and pick someone else at another position or he is snatched up before the bucs pick and I yell at the TV ! If we can get a right tackle , a really good free agent left tackle , a starting 3 tec to replace general massive crap “gmc ” and a promising end or 2 to back up nassib and jpp that would be great ! Get Beck back healthy & kwon to pair with lvd as lvd is not a problem as some of you might think he is ! Get 2 more corners 1 develope behind Vernon and a free agent 1 to fight it out with Davis the 3rd…and for the love of God our GM has got to find a pure 3 down back & stop passing on the kamaras & hunts and shoot even the Marlon Mack’s of the world ! Even Nick Chubb would have looked really good in pewter & red…this off season has got to be Jayson’s best masterpiece in setting a plan with his new coach as the direction of what this football team will become & I do not suggest an air it out style of football because we all see that gets us nowhere ! It does not do well in the red zone and it will fail in the playoffs.not to mention it does jameis no justice ! Run the gosh damn ball , jameis can do wonders off of play action and play fundamentally sound defence

  58. ElioT Says:

    adam from ny:

I do really like Lavonte and I’m not saying they move him, but the one thing that bothers me about him is his mindset and ability to handle all the losing.

We can all remember his quote after the “Tennessee Ready” game where he said the Major Wright PI call kinda took all the wind out of their sails…. To me, that was a horrific thing to hear from such a talented player. I understand David might not be a vocal leader, but someone needed to do something about this crap over the past three years and no one really did.

Again, I like Lavonte but he’s got a $9,500.000 cap hit in 2019 and $10,750,000 in 2020, and you’ve got to wonder if the guy really wants to be here.

I hope a new D-Coordinator can come in and inspire him to the greatness we know he can attain, but it’s a little scary.

  59. gotbbucs Says:

He’s gone. It’s not feasible to pay a one trick pony that kind of money.

  60. down in the dirt Doug Says:

Licht– HAS REMAINED BECAUSE OUR OWNERS TRUST HIM TO HELP PICK THE NEW COACH.He will be given two more years. He is their warm blanket and hot cup of coffee in this cold, cold league.

  61. SOEbuc Says:

Licht will be able to negotiate a two and three or better for GMC.

    Round 2×2: (LT,RG,RT BPAs)
    Round 3×2: (CB,DE)

  62. Bucsace Says:

True difference making players will make an impact despite dealing with double teaming tactics etc.. GMC is good, but he doesn’t warrant an elite player type contract extension

I’m putting this info on this GMC article because I said before we could have a chance of getting a second and third round for GMC and I would love to get this guy in the second to help our OL.

  66. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

I only see Gerald McCoy returning next season if the Bucs are able to restructure his contract. $13M is way too high, maybe $7M to $8M is the right price point, but I doubt he’ll take a pay cut and I don’t blame him.

  67. stvcl Says:

    @geraldweenie

  68. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Arians was known in Arizona for flat out Outing players, vs taking the blame for poor play himself.
Koetter would turn the other cheek, Arians will turn your cheek inside out, old man or not.

  69. Fire Light Says:

Jason Licht is making great decisions! Now nail this draft and keep up the good work! GMC will be missed! Keeeep Licht! Keep Jason Licht!

  70. Destinjohnny Says:

I cannot believe this guy is still employed
I would take mark Dominick over him

  71. Reach87 Says:

If asked I bet McCoy would renegotiate his contract. Just my opinion. He feels Father Time’s effect but knows he can still help the team. He should not be playing the snaps he has been playing the last two years, and that will help him and the team. Go Bucs!

  72. Buc4life Says:

No restructuring McCoys contract. Waive him or try to get a 4th round pick, which will be hard to get. We need a culture change and it starts with McCoy being out of here. McCoy is ok with losing and we need another beast to play next to Vea. Thank God JPP and Buckner called out McCoy’s manhood and saw that he isn’t the impact player that most of Bucs fans knew a long time ago.

  73. The Buc Realist Says:

2019 will be another wasted Buc year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  74. “That guy” Says:

Resign humphries, that’s a good start entering the off season.

  75. firethecannons Says:

Trade McCoy to the Raiders scarf up a second round

  76. NewTampaChris Says:

    Gerald Who?

  77. NewTampaChris Says:

Lightning … 13-0-1 in December… just like rooting for the Bucs.

  78. tnew Says:

Would love to have GMC back… at a better contract. Then make him more of a rotational player. Drop Unrein and Allen, go ahead and draft a Tackle, either offensive or defensive one early. This is a DT heavy draft early. The third best might still be the fifth best player in this draft. Time to start the draft evaluations. Someone will be trading into the top 4 for a QB, Bosa is gone and Williams will be gone.

  79. isrBuc Says:

Mccoy should have been traded 2 years ago. Licht should have been fired. this is terrible.
