Defense Was Gassed

December 10th, 2018

Talks defense.

Joe has to tip his cap to Bucs defenders.

Yesterday they had a valiant first half, holding one of the best NFL offenses with a Hall of Fame quarterback and one of the best young receivers and running backs in the game to a grand total of one field goal.

That was impressive.

But because their offense was simply suffocated by the Saints defense in the second half, the Bucs defense began to wear out as New Orleans had the edge in time of possession. Soon, the defense was out of gas.

Joe spoke with both Ryan Smith and Lavonte David after the game. Neither would confess to the defense being zapped in the second half as the Saints scored 25 unanswered points to win 28-14.

Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching, yams-eating coach Dirk Koetter said what David and Smith wouldn’t say: The Bucs defense just wore out.

“No doubt,” Koetter said. “Our defense was on the field way too much in the second half. I think we had sixteen, almost seventeen minutes of time of possession in the first half, and like twelve in the second half.

“Again, that’s just not going to work against the Saints. They totally shut us down in the second half. We couldn’t score points, fourteen is not enough, and our defense was on the field too much.”

The way the game transpired told Joe the Bucs defense is vastly improved since defrocked defensive coordinator Mike Smith was jettisoned. And no matter how well a defense is playing, if an offense is not holding its end of the bargain, sooner or later the Saints will grind a defense into the turf.

Needed to stay more aggressive. It felt like they were trying to run clock out starting in the 3rd period. O-line also sh** the bed that game and Winston was average.

  2. Srqbucfan Says:

    Was Monk calling the plays?

  3. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

In addition to being gassed. The offense’s complete 2nd half incompetence, as well as the blocked punt, continuously gave the Saints GREAT field position. I dont think NO start behind their own 40 once in the 2nd half outside of the initial kickoff.

Even the leagues best Defense would struggle to contain a high-powered Saints offense that continued to get amazing field position, while also being gassed.

Where was our 38 point per game offense?

what happened to the, ” the benching helped winston” crowd?….lol….

what happened to the, ” dirk has this team playing hard” crowd?….lol….

what happened to the, ” dirk should stay if he wins out” crowd?….lol…..

what happened to the, “7-9 and dirk should stay” crowd?….

what happened to the, “i think we can win out” crowd?…lol….

    what happened?….lol….

told some of you clowns that 2games against a team with a top3 pick and a win vs a team with an injured QB was too small of a sample size to judge if things were “fixed”……

we’re going to finish 6-10 with an OT win vs ATL…..

Gassed? Get off the field. A 6-10 team and same defense as it has been since david carr lit it up for a record in 2016. This franchise is just poorly constructed by the GM

    john

    thanks for bringing that up…..

where’s the, “dirk should stay because he’s produced the #1 offense” crowd?……

no bucs fan in their right mind can say they saw the #1 offense yesterday…..but they’ll pull out all the stats…..what do your eyes tell you…..dirk aint never had a #1 offense….those stats are padded by being down…..

813bucboy….. I am here, and I keep on saying that this coach should stay. I will keep on saying that this team biggest problem is the lack of talent, not a lack of coaching.

  9. Reach87 Says:

Bucboi, I am part of the “keep the HC” crowd. Right here. My observation is that if you want to lose consistently, change your head coach (and likely his entire staff) often. Want to win consistently, build (not destroy) your strong areas and strengthen your weak areas. Men and women far better than me call this Idea the “discipline of execution “. Many would cut or replace the entire team during the season because of some valid reasons, but primarily because they see no value in player progression over time, the value of coaching progression over time, the value of program (team) progression over time. IMO, theses values make consistent winners and the alternative makes us feel good as someone walks out the door, only to be right back at square zero wrt player, coach and team progression and consistency. There may be some transformational coaches out there who can come in and avoid the step back. If there are, I don’t know them (McCarthy? Richard?). Maybe it’s someone not available right now (current coach), but even that is a stretch (could we get them and could they deliver in 2019?). I’m not an owner, but what I see with clear eyes is we have a pretty good offense (got it, we can do better in the red zone or turnovers). We have some good pieces on Defense, bad special teams production, and some upgrades (as well as bringing up some of the younger) Offensive linemen. We can get at those shortfalls WITHOUT changing the coach , IMO.

Eyes open, not just on the problems but the disciplined means(vice blowing it all up again at great risk of going to zero) is why I advocate for keeping the coach at this time. Respect everyone else’s position in this unless it is a personal attack or not bounded by made up opinion painted as fact). Go Bucs!

  10. Not there yet Says:

Sorry arse coaching staff. Dirk has one job and that’s to score points and when it counts he can’t even do that. Finally having games where we’re saying the loss is on the offense not the defense, find a better coach please glazers but the problem is you suck at that. You think we’d eventually have found a decent coach by accident but nope not the glazers. Even if Koetter gets fired I expect them to make another stupid decision on the new hire

i respect your opinion…..i disagree with it but to each its own….

we have consistently lost with dirk, even when you’ve upgraded the talent….

the defense is playing better in spite of dirk…he never wanted to fire his buddy smitty….if dirk had his way, smitty would still be in the pressbox…..

we’ve run this same 4vert scheme for 4years now…..we’ve finished 6-10, a flukey 9-7, 5-11 and now look like maybe 6-10…..is that consistent enough for you?….lol….

dirk gets out coached far too many times….yesterday was a perfect example of that….the saints adjusted, and we never did…..thats coaching not talent…..

defense produced TO’s and sacks yesterday…..held the saints below their average….but dirks #1 offense couldnt produce points……

yall need to stop being afraid of change….look at the bears….the rams….the chargers…..all 3 teams fired their veteran coaches and replaced them with first time HC’s…..last year the chargers won 9games the rams made the playoffs and the bears will win their division…..

you think the rams fans wanted a jeff fisher led team that consistently finishes 7-9, 8-8?…..chargers fans wanted to see rivers consistently win 7-9 games with no playoffs……bears consistently lose under john fox?…..

the talent is there…..you can see that in the quick turn around that duff has done with the defense…..we have weapons on offense but can only score when we’re down 3TD’s…..lol….

the lack of coaching and outdated scheme is killing the players and the fans…..

we dont have to blow up the roster just the coaching staff…..

Missed D Jax big time , Winston was high on throws again , Godwin looked like a 6 th round pick and the run blocking is atrocious!!
Barber , whom I like , just isn’t the answer for this nonblocking team !!

Winston played the HOF Saints QB Drew Brees to a draw. The Saints OL is better than the Bucs OL. The Saints DL is better than the Bucs DL. The Saints ST are better than the Bucs ST. The Saints HC is better than the Bucs HC.

    Let’s blame Winston!!!

Can’t wait until sometime next year when joe and the sheep finally figure out that it was not the coaches that was the problem!!!!!!!!!! We are going to see the narrative of how keeping the DC into this season brought the team down!!!! But that is incorrect!!!!!! The season was sunk late last year when jw3 investigation was exposed!!!!!!!!! just because you see a story 100 times sheep does not make it true!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

smitty has already been exposed!!!!…duff is getting production out of no name players!!!!!…dirk still hasnt developed a QB!!!!!!!

you ready to eat that crow!!!!!!!!!!…..i told you this staff was trash and wouldnt make it pass this year!!!!!!!!!
