The Bucs And YAC

Last year Bucs wide receivers were awful in YAC (yards after the catch).

When running back Chucky Sims was your best option for YAC, you needed work. This was especially surprising given the weapons at receiver and tight end.

Well, through six weeks of the NFL season (and five games for the Bucs), the team still isn’t getting a bunch of YAC from its high profile receivers, but YAC has improved.

Currently, per NFL Films by way of BSPN NFL Matchup, the Bucs have two of the best YAC producers in the NFL. They would be Adam Humphries and O.J. Howard.

For wide receivers, Humphries is averaging 7.5 yards of YAC a reception, good enough for 8th in the NFL among receivers. Howard is averaging 8.9 yards of YAC a reception, 10th among a group made up of tight ends and running backs.

So yeah, the YAC is better. Just not from the guys you would expect YAC to come from.

Fitz really bumped the average up leading the receiver.

  2. theodore Says:

Jameis is lucky YAC isn’t tracked for interceptions.

close your ears mike!!!!…YAC aint for you…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  4. DB55 Says:

Sad part is that I was talking about this 3 years ago. It still hasn’t improved

  5. orlbucfan Says:

Well, speakin’ of the d###ed devil….!! Where’s all the Hump badmouthers? Chickens. And a TE is our other YAC star? Just wait.

  6. Greg Says:

Jameis hits receivers when they turn around and face him. He rarely hits them in stride. He threw 4 ints and has only played 1 1/2 games! His nature wont change Jameis= Jay cutler. You see the talent once in a while and keep talking about potential that just never comes. He is always going to be an up and down performer and in the NFL EVERY coach knows the most important stat outside of the scoreboard is turnovers.

Joe was smart to run this article now because in 5 games the YAC yards will drop like a rock. But I doubt we will hear about that.

Do you even watch the games Greg? He was hitting guys in stride all game last week.

What he needs to improve on is his use of pump fakes and using his eyes to look off the safeties.

  8. Greg Says:

Ive watched him his whole NFL career go back and look. There is a reason he struggles so much to hit Jackson who was leading the nfl when Fitz was in.

  9. Greg Says:

I like how you didn’t contest the 4 ints in 1 1/2 games. He has lead the NFL in turn overs every year.

  10. Dapostman Says:

    Greg,

Yeh, Winston threw for 395 yards on 30 button hooks. As for the turnovers, when he doesn’t throw a pick his team is 9-9. So Winston could go the entire year and not throw an interception and Tampa’s record would be 8-8. Why do you suppose that is Greg?

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

A small improvement on what you see is what you get will be appreciated. Go Bucs!

  12. NPRSageBoy Says:

If they lose to the Browns, we’re all gonna YAC….

  13. unbelievable Says:

@Greg and your boy Fitz had 5 INTs in his last 1.5 games, so what’s your point?

I guess you think 5 interceptions would be better than 4?

  14. James Walker Says:

NFL defenses are terrible for the first few weeks, that is why Fitz did so well. By the time week 3 rolls around there was enough tape to shut him down.

  15. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Unbelievable no doubt Fitz INTs are better in Greg’s mind because he is white. Simple as that most likely. Possibly a Gator fan.

  16. BucsFan90 Says:

Hump can thank Jameis for that. He and Brate were non-factors with Fitztragic under center

  17. DB55 Says:

    Unb

Like Winston has time to pump fake, whachutalkinbout mr Drummond?

  18. Trench War Says:

I noticed that most are the slot receivers which operate in the same area of the field as TE’s. How many times do we see Jameis checking down to Hump just pass the L.O.S. without a defender near him for 10 yards? So it makes sense that these short passing routes would be better Y.A.C.

  19. Cgmaster27 Says:

Greg, at least pay attention to the article. The lone Bucs reciever listed is humpheries, who had all of one target with fitz. You stumble to spew your same bs so quickly you are looking foolish. Same int speech over and over.

  20. Trench War Says:

To be fair to Fitz about targeting Hump and Brate, he was completing the longer pass patterns more often to DJax, Evans, and Godwin. Jameis utilizes the check downs and shorter routes more often plus there is that comfort level too. The comparison is not apples to apples.

  21. AncientBuc Says:

The WRs listed are mainly slot guys matched on linebackers and used in screens, etc. Howard really impressive for TE and ability to run away from guys. Lower volume of catches props almost all of the players on both lists.

look where we stand in team YAC. Joe cherry picking random stats….again

Not cherry picking anything. NFL Films twittered out the stats and Joe wrote a story about the stats. Nothing more, nothing less.

  24. Alanbucsfan Says:

Humphries is a good player, but his YAC produced 0 points- maybe if he was focused on the pylon instead of the defender, he would have scored.
    Bucs just don’t have a winning attitude…

  25. unbelievable Says:

    lol DB.

    Benenoch is a QB-injury-in-waiting .

  26. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I agree with Greg. JW clearly struggles to hit moving targets in stride. Last week against ATL many of the passes were to receiving targets who ran out, turned around and stood still. He did have a few nice shots but a lot of his passes to guys on slants or crossing the middle of the field are high or behind the receiver. Watch the replays.
