New Crew Of Buccaneers Team Captains Selected; Jameis Winston, Gerald McCoy Not Picked By Teammates

October 19th, 2018

Former team captain

The two primary faces of the Tampa Bay franchise were not chosen to be the team’s leadership faces by their peers.

Dirk Koetter delayed the Bucs’ team captain vote by players because, per Koetter, he wanted players to spend as much time around each other before choosing. One reason Koetter gave was the influx of new veterans on defense. Also, he wanted the 2018 captaincy to be more of an earned honor.

Well, the captains vote came down this week and was announced today. Scott Smith of the official team website shared the news on Twitter.

Mike Evans and Ali Marpet are captains on offense, with Lavonte David and Kwon Alexander chosen on defense. Linebacker Adarius Taylor is the special teams pick.

Gerald McCoy is a bit of a stunning omission. He’s been a captain for several years and, unlike America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, he didn’t let his team down with a three-game suspension.

In the end, Bucs players didn’t pick any newcomers to the team as captains. And they dumped a couple of former captains in McCoy and Jameis.

Joe wonders what Team Glazer might be thinking about this voting result.

no one has led more blowouts in bucs history than captain blowout cancer93 that says a lot for a franchise with 1 good year in 42

  2. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

lvd and kwon have enough worry about with their piss poor play versus being captains. mentally weak and all mouth as on-field leaders and you wonder why they can’t hold a damn lead or recover from adversity….

    JW was a no brainer

BS. The only “true” captain of this team is JPP

  5. Etzel Says:

Should have been JPP. Nobody else.

Kwon over JPP is a joke.

JPP only true captain…. go watch the carlton dance on youtube thats why ice cream man not capt

  10. James Walker Says:

Choosing a captain is as meaningless as picking what they will have for lunch.

  12. Bucnjim Says:

This cracks me up! First his peers are wrong for not voting him into the top 100 then his TEAM MATES are wrong? Not sure what games some of you are watching, but here’s a hint……zero stats against the Falcons last week. His ship sailed a LONG time ago.

  13. Trey Says:

    Should have been JPP

  14. Bucnjim Says:

This team needs on the field captains just like any other great team. Why do you think we had so much success with Dungy. Lynch/Barber in the Secondary, Nickerson/Brooks at LB, Sapp/Rice on the D line. All Leaders!

  15. Mike Says:

This is really quite a big deal. Look for both Jameis and Mcoy’s attitudes and play to drop off.

This is pretty much the beginning of he end for things as we know it.

  16. 813bucboi Says:

yeah JPP should’ve been the only captain….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

Won’t ever hear GMC say that

  18. Mike Says:

Trade McCoy now before the deadline! it’s the most you can get for him. Other teams will take him, take a chance on him- he’s definitely a good player, above average- that’s hard to argue with- ask any coach in the league- another team won’t have so much expectation, and already has their leaders in place.

  19. BucThis Says:

@FR Who do you think I got it from? 😏😉

ALL UNDERACHIEVERS……. 2 PLAYOFF WINS IS NOT “SO MUCH SUCCESS” IT’S FAILURE DUNGY FAILED! You can’t rewrite history because it makes you feel better. dungy is a postseason choke artist with a career losing record when it matters most… truth hurts….

  22. go for the face30 Says:

This game should be the GD Superbowl for Tampa. At home, getting back to .500, playing the Browns, a presumably new(ish) defensive scheme the Browns are unable to study for. They BETTER win this game. Frankly this team deserves literally zero support if they go out there and shi themselves.

  23. cmurda Says:

Kwon and LVD? Let’s be honest. They have both been crap this year. Apparently this vote was based on their resume and not what have you done lately. I really wished JPP was voted on defense. I do agree with the offensive captains in Marpet and M.E.

Just had to go there didn’t ya, o well.

  26. DB55 Says:

Jameis simply needs to stay away from Ward. Ward will make anyone look bad. Don’t do it JW, it’s a trap!

  27. BurgDweller Says:

No surprise here. Winston is a leader but lost it due to his recent troubles but will get the C back eventually. On the other hand, McCoy, never has been a leader nor a competitor. He just wants to have fun and apologize to opposing teams QBs. I really hope this is McCoys last year. The team is not at any sort of advantage having him on the field or in the locker room.

  28. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

Who cares. Oh I get to go out to the middle of the field. Shake a few hands, watch the coin toss up close. Joe y’all made a big deal at the beginning of the season about this just as you are now. I’ll be drinking some Tennessee home made shine 48 hrs from now and hopefully about to watch the Bucs beat the DOG SH!T out of the Browns l. It don’t matter I’m sure JW is not gonna cry and get his feelings hurt. But Gerald on the other hand? Hell yeah he is crying now like a pu$$y

  29. Ray Rice Says:

Did Aunt Geraldine apologize to everyone after captains were named? Or, did he treat everyone to a Baskin Robbins double scoop? No way LVD and KWON should be captains. JPP should have been the lone captain on defense. They should have added Jensen as another offensive captain.

  30. Blind Melon Says:

    Interesting… and very telling.

PS, if you’re not on the field – why have such a strong opinion? You only know what you’re fed by the media…

  31. Trench War Says:

I get being down on Kwon but the LVD criticism is unfounded. In fact he leads the team in tackles. If not for LVD being in on most of the tackles it would be even worse. Kwon on the other hand has been involved in more busted plays and seems lost at times. Kwon and LVD should swap the mic.

  32. BrianBucs Says:

    Joe

Remember all of those times that you tried to brainwash us about how Winston has full support of his team? Well, there you go.

  33. Bucnjim Says:

    Reality,

Was never a big Dungy fan but when referencing that D it was during his watch. More of a Kiffin/Marinelli fan.

  34. Ndog Says:

My goodness this team has so many issues. First of all the hardest worker in the building is Jameis according to everyone so that should count for something. JPP worked his tail off to get ready for this season AND has produced. So they don’t vote our hardest working player and best player thus far as capains but vote Mr. After one bad call we feel apart LVD and Mr. I take horrible angles and never saw a play fake I didn’t fall for Kwon as captains?
This shows why this team loses, they care more about their buddies and being pals than working hard or actually producing. This won’t bother Jameis at all but this could break McCoy’s fragile little heart as this means his friends might not want to have fun with him anymore.

  35. Joe Blahak Says:

enough said, the players have spoken…Winston & McCoy need new addresses…

  36. Joe Blahak Says:

soft ice cream man gotta go….trade deadline= oct.30

  37. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bucnjim

It was Dungy’s Defenseive scheme, brought from Minnesota. He hired Kiffin and Marinelli to teach it…

Do people not remember Tony’s D’s in Minny we’re always near the top?

  38. Doug Says:

    Why not trade 93?

  39. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I don’t view this as anything more with Jameis’ teammates than it is with us. Jameis is in “earn back” mode and that includes his teammates. I believe He understands this, and embraces it.

He is earning back their trust and when some time has passed, he will regain that captaincy.

As far as Gerald, I have to say that I am not sure what it means, but it is interesting.

  40. Bucnjim Says:

Yes and for that time period it was a great Defense. I’m still sour on Dungy because of the Rams Championship game. ANY offense at all would have had us in several other Super Bowls

  41. Trench War Says:

I bet even Jameis voted on another teammate beside himself.

They Choked in the post season with Dungy the clown defense in Minnesota too… Being near the top during the regular season then embarrassing yourself in the post season renders all those regular season stats meaningless… you win when it matters that is what counts not meaningless regular season stats followed by post season failure. bucs were 100% 1 dimensional pretenders under dungy never once contenders.

  43. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Let’s face it…the secondary and the line have let the team down. It’s time for the linebackers (& their coach) to take over.

  44. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    I wouldn’t doubt that, TW!

  45. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bucnjim

We were IN the championship game with a rookie QB with marginal talent. If Bert Emmanuel doesn’t get jobbed, or BK times his jump 1 second differently, the entire Buccaneers future would have been awesome….

I’ll take great defense any day, the fact that he got us there was a remarkable coaching job

  46. Dre Says:

    McCoy is captain of slacking

  47. Not there yet Says:

No Geraldine didn’t let his team down with a suspension, he chose to let them down during games. I’m glad it went down this way, Geraldine and Winston are suspect and both their fates should be realized by the end of the year. Having to talk to your teammates about a Uber incident couldn’t help Winston’s chances at all, Geraldine he’s just collecting a check at this point. He’s most effective yapping his mouth in the off-season

  48. Jim Says:

    JPP and Me, I’m good…

  49. Marlow Says:

And there you have it! The 2 “faces of the franchise,” cough, cough, are not the leaders. That is encouraging news since neither one of them has lead this team anywhere, or held their teammates to a high standard of performance.

  50. doolnutts Says:

I have been a big McCoy supporter… He is a very good DT overall. MY biggest defense for him was that he never had a supporting cast around him… Those days are over… JPP is play LIGHTS OUT… We have added Vea, Allen, Curry etc. And yet McCoy seems just average. I understand DT sacks and pressures can be hard to come by but the amount we are paying him doesn’t seem justified. We aren’t in a cap pinch just yet but if it comes that way I would be asking McCoy to restructure, trade etc… JPP, in my opinion, looks to be far more valuable than anyone else on the DL…

  51. Bucko40 Says:

Teammates may say one thing about Winston to the public but this vote tells me what they really feel about him. If I’m McCoy I’d be fed up with the pathetic players that Licht and Koetter have placed around him. What a waste of a talented player. Winston should be jettisoned along with the Coaching staff after this season is over.

  52. Annoyed In CT Says:

The team has a vote of no confidence in McCoy I have a feeling he’s going to be gone next season and it’s about time seems the culture is changing I don’t see Koetter making next season either The Winds or Change are blowing in Tampa

  53. gman Says:

GMC can be captain of the Swashbucklers

  54. T REX Says:

JWWinston’s mural was taken down. He doesn’t deserve the C. If he keeps turning it over he won’t ever be captain here again anyhow.

    America’s Great Turnover Machine

  55. Hawk Says:

The more troubling aspects of this vote have not been pointed out, as yet.
#1. This is Winston’s make-or-break year. The time to show the Buccaneer organization that he is the one to lead this team for the next ten years… and his team didn’t even make him a captain.
#2. How many votes did Fitzpatrick get? *We* (fans) will never know the answer to this, but the people who make the big decisions certainly will. It might be zero, but if it was more than 2-3, that would not be a good sign for Winston either.
This team is in more turmoil than can be fixed with 1-2 players or coaches.

  56. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

I think everyone and their momma realizes that JPP is the the true leader/captain of this team. I’d even add DJax into the mix over Jameis as well…

  57. Issaic haggins Says:

    Reality-is-a-Beotch,

As the days and season go by I find myself viewing GMC with the same critical eye that you do. Dancing on the sidelines during the Falcons game down by 8 points I think says it all. I do think Gerald is a very good player but great players, winners, don’t do things like that on the sidelines when the team is losing.

When I see something like that it tells me that winning or losing doesn’t matter. Why should it at this point? He’s been “blessed” by the “Lord” with talent and millions of dollars.

  62. D-Rome Says:

By the way, Ryan Fitzgerald is a better leader than Jay-Miss.

  63. SOEbuc Says:

Idiots that keep saying JPP really have no clue what a team captain is and how it is chosen. It’s not just by who’s the best player.

  64. BucThis Says:

    SOEbucs
JPP is not only the best player but also a leader. I think that qualifies him as a captain? Perhaps, your idea of a captain is someone that apologizes hitting someone in a contact support 🤷🏽‍♂️

  72. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This just in…the Bills, Bears, Packers, Chiefs, Jets and 49ers also did not name their starting QBs as team captains.

Apparently, the Packers must not be pleased with Aaron Rogers.
