Hard To Be Horrible

October 1st, 2018

Defense set to music.

For roughly a year, Joe has written too many times to count that Bucs secondary coaches Brett Maxie and Jon Hoke couldn’t develop talent.

A number of Bucs fans wailed that Joe was terribly ignorant, blindly ignoring the facts in front of their faces.

Now it is to the point the Bucs’ secondary coaches aren’t just making mistakes, they are embarrassing themselves, their head coach, the organization and ownership.

Joe had been inclined to leave defensive coordinator Mike Smith out of that equation, but Joe can no longer ignore that after yesterday. After all, everything (good and bad) that happens with the defense falls under Smith’s umbrella. And the past 20 games, there has been a whole lot more (really) bad than there has been good.

Even a former NFL defensive back and respected player personnel director is taking not-so-veiled shots at Bucs defensive coaches but Joe isn’t sure if it is directed at Smith, Hoke, Maxie or all of them.

Louis Riddick of BSPN took to Twitter yesterday and is simply appalled at the Bucs secondary.

“This Joe” grew up in a rural area of the Midwest about four hours from where Joe is typing this here post. Joe is not a country music fan in any way (though doesn’t mind staring at Carrie Underwood). But a lot of Joe’s friends growing up were.

An old song by Mac Davis was one of Joe’s friends’ favorite tunes. It springs to mind for Joe reading Riddick’s Twitter. “It’s Hard to Be Humble.”

Only in the case of the Bucs’ secondary, the name of the song should be changed to “It’s Hard to Be Horrible.”

Yes, it is hard to be horrible, or worse as the case certainly is after an offseason marked by your defense getting talent upgrades.

why care when GMC is singing joy to the world even after the loss.

they need a sapp to slap them silly

  5. Howard Cosell Says:

If someone can do a Bucs low-lights real with yakkity sax theme music Howard will pay

  6. Robert Says:

you really should look into hank jr. or david allen coe.

    they’ll change your life

  7. BucEmUp Says:

But….but…..but…..I thought the new dline was going to fix all this??!!!!!

Mike Smith is a booger eater and Dirk Koetter is a pusswa

  8. Howard Cosell Says:

Those are good, blue-collar musicians Robert. Howard is certain that they don’t eat soft-serve ice cream in the recording studio

  9. Anonymous Says:

So disgusted right now, listening to Koetter making excuses for Mike Smith.

“Well it wasn’t just the defense. We were horrible all the way around yesterday.”

Sure, Coach, but the defense was LAST IN THE NFL LAST YEAR, AND NOW THEY ARE DEMONSTRABLY WORSE!!!

“Well, it’s midseason, and you have to think about the next step… If we fire our defensive coordinator now, what next?”

Oh, so there’s no coaches anywhere taking a year off like friggin Mike Smith did? No college assistants will move mid-season for a fat raise? Wasn’t Coach Duffner a friggin NFL DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR AT ONE TIME???!!!

    ABSOLUTELY NO CONFIDENCE!!!!!!

  10. TerryE25 Says:

Maybe they need FSU’s Turnover Backpack?!?!?! LOL!

  11. passthebuc Says:

No one on the Buc’s side is speaking. I guess the NFL money is so good that they do not care what the product is like.

  12. Howard Cosell Says:

Yeah…..time to dig out the pitchforks and torches from the shed or the attic

  13. Robert Says:

it’s no secret I want fitz, but can ANYONE, I MEAN ANYONE dispute the fact that this team came out as flat as perez hilton yesterday.

seriously. they played with fire those first two games, at least fought back in the 3rd.

yesterday they just did not give a darn.

“… one of Joe’s friends’ favorite tunes.”

Suuure, Joe. You sound like the Viagra commercial: “I’m asking for my sister’s friend’s cousin.” :]

  15. Buc1987 Says:

    I know what happened Robert.

They prolly ate too much of David Allan Coe’s aunt’s fried chicken before the game.

  16. John Says:

So if we change D coaches and keep the same players will we be better?

  17. Joe Says:

Suuure, Joe. You sound like the Viagra commercial:

Well, Joe had to google who sang it. Thought it was Waylon Jennings.

(Couldn’t pick Mac Davis out of a lineup.)

  18. SOEbuc Says:

Not saying there good coaches Joe, but on the contrary, how can you teach a CB to be elite in today’s NFL? Grimes got 15 yard illegal contact when the receiver was running straight up, stopped, and started running again where he ran into Grimes. THESE COVERAGE PENALTIES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH SAFETY. THIS IS THE NFL WANTING TOM BRADY CONNECTING WITH ANTONIO BROWN FOR HIGHER RATINGS AND SALES. REALLY SUCKS.

  19. AlteredEgo Says:

If “It’s Hard to be Horrible”……The Bucs made it look easy !

  20. firethecannons Says:

    fire mike smith today

He said something like – 35 points in the first half, I’ve never seen that before-

And I’m like they dropped 30 points in the first half on you just last week!!!! Fans can’t be that dumb can they? Hmm never mind!

  22. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Koetter is going down with his BFF. DO SOMETHING! I am so tired of if we fire him then what, oh I don’t know, try something different, a different approach, a different voice? This staff (other then Buckner) was LAST in the NFL last year. How can it be this bad and NO changes made? So now we are on a record pace for the WORST D ( points given up) in HISTORY? Come on Coach, do something. Maybe he has, he will be gone and be an OC in 2019 if this crap continues.

  23. SOEbuc Says:

^^How can there be SOO many less flags in the NCAA for pass interference if these guys are called pros.^^

  24. jmarkbuc Says:

    No day after press conference?

    Seems odd.

  25. Robert Says:

the 1st time in history 87 might be right. mark your calendar!

fried chicken sounds damn good, gonna have to call the wife!

  26. Rick Says:

Winston is starting week 6. Just announced.

  27. Robert Says:

hey rick, the world is round!

  28. SOEbuc Says:

Depending on what the offense looks like the rest of the year, Monken for HC and Buckner DC 2019.

AND NEW JERSEYS!!!! Or at least get rid of the lines in the numbers. They might look cool after that even. But the lines make them 10x worse.

  29. Rick Says:

    Robert

    Is it??????

  30. DesertBucsfan Says:

    Thanks to all posters. LMFAO

    Space the final frontier

I don’t think it could get much worst but hang in there the Bucs all ways surprise me.

  31. Not there yet Says:

Raheem morris was young he went from position coach to head coach then had to be the d coordinator mid season. You mean as a former head coach Mike Smith your defense is worst than someone who had no control over players no idea how to run a organization at all and all you have to do is implement a scheme with players heads above what raheem which was gmc as a rookie……how embarrassing that we’ve come this far only to be no better of on defense than a decade ago…..pathetic

  32. Frank Pillow Says:

    “We chose to suck…”

  33. 813bucboi Says:

    and….@realist is still in hiding….lol…..

i hear ya joe…..ive been on your side when it comes to this staff developing defensive talent….folks talk about kwon but he’s regressed….spence has regressed….VHG regressed but looked like he was getting back on track, im assuming with no help from our coaching staff…..

you wont hear any complaints from me….smitty sucks…he has to go…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  34. Nick2 Says:

To think of all the Bucs defenses which were defenseless or worst in the league year after year and then to think that yesterday we may have seen the worst single half of any Buc (perhaps NFL) team and you have to begin to wonder how the Glazers could pull the plug on Tony Dungy but they are willing to stomach Mike Smith until January when he obviously will be shown the door.
    Unbelievable……….

  35. jmarkbuc Says:

    Nick2

Bucs defenses were rarely the worst in the league in the good old days, no matter what our record was

  36. FreeTheSecretWeapon Says:

Not to make excuses but it was a short week and as was my case to start JW… Your most prepared player for that game was on the bench….

The worst coaching decision on the day came before kickoff… You should of started JW…

And DJax can go F himself…

Now with no OJ…. Looks like we are back to 2016….. 9-7 with a D that will streak if the O can serve pat….

    UNLIKE THE CHICAGO READY GAME….

  37. Bucnjim Says:

We’ve fired coach after coach who wants to come here? Like I said in a previous post it is time to change the culture of this organization. If you want great character visit a volunteer at a food bank. Not saying bring in murderers even though some may have but this is an ugly game and it takes crazy players to play it.

  38. ClwJB Says:

The issue is not that we gave up the booty again, its who we gave it up too – basically a high school offense

After seeing DK protect him today and do nothing – the season is likely over.

The players know bullspit when they see it -and they have been watching it for 3 years now

Short of a miracle, we are starting from square one again next year and likely will not extend JW so the new regime can start “fresh”

  39. Miguel Grande Says:

It’s simply unacceptable after decades of great defenses and zero offense, we finally get a great offense and zero defense.

This fish is rotten from the head down.

Strap the Glazers to those annoying cannons and pull the trigger!

  40. destinjohnny Says:

Talent wise we are 32nd in the secondary in the NFL
    Dont shoot the messenger

  41. Jason Says:

Robert…. David Allan Coe & Hank reference was hilarious… good call! The DB’s are poorly coached but also have no zone discipline or knowledge of man exchange in some zones. No communication and it showed, simple crossing or pick routes that could be handled with an exchange was simply not excuted. If not you need to leave enough space for your fellow DB to clear and stay with route. Regardless of scheme. These guys even though rookies didn’t just start playing so that is not new to them.. Hard to watch….. Go Bucs!

I think if I was going to choose a Mac Davis tune that Mike Smith was going to karaoke to at that podium it would be………………

“Baby baby don’t get hooked on me.”

Baby, baby don’t get hooked on me.
Baby, baby don’t get hooked on me.
‘Cause I’ll just use you then I’ll set you free.
