Barber: “They Don’t Have An Answer On Him Yet”

October 5th, 2018

The Barber twins have been talking.

Tiki and Ronde have chatted plenty about the Buccaneers this year and last, Tiki said on his CBS Sports Radio show this week.

In a segment about the Bucs following the Windy City Wipeout, Tiki explained that his Bucs icon brother was telling him that the priorities in Tampa Bay’s front office last year were re-signing Mike Evans and then locking down America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, to a fat new deal.

But that all changed when Jameis got suspended, Tiki claimed.

Joe shares this from the ex-Giants running back because his brother Ronde is so tight with Bucs general manager Jason Licht and the Buccaneers organization. Ronde is no stranger to One Buc Palace and its power players. And it sure doesn’t hurt Tiki’s credibility that he was part of the Bucs-Eagles broadcast team in Tampa last month and meeting with Bucs officials there, including Dirk Koetter.

“I think that the Bucs did it correctly in building their roster. Right, and I think it’s done correctly, but the key piece is Jameis and they don’t have an answer on him yet. They need one badly, really badly,” Tiki said this week.

No huge surprise here, but Tiki’s implication on his show was that the Bucs need to see a specific level of performance from Jameis this season — or else.

Joe is glad it’s showtime for Jameis, and he’s healthy and armed with weapons few quarterbacks can claim, along with a healthy offensive line. For whatever question Bucs officials need “an answer,” Jameis should be able to provide it.

When your backup makes you look like a high school QB, should you get 100 mill deal.

    A 6 year old could answer it………

  2. AtlBuc Says:

How did Fitz make Jameis look like a HS quarterback? Was he playing defense on the teams that Fitz torched???

  3. Clw JB Says:

He is going to have to carry this team with his WR group – the OLine is average and defense is god awful – how can we expect him to win with 1/2 of a team?

The total lack of development of any type of defense is making the decision process very, very difficult

Coming off the bench cold after 3 weeks down 5 touchdowns…what idiot makes any inference based on that performance?

He is the best QB prospect we have ever had

But Fitz is clearly the best QB we have ever had, for a couple of games at least…

  4. Waterboy Says:

Hopefully Fitz will get a shot to start for another team next season we’ll see how he looks over a full 16 game season.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

    I agree with tiki….

the team built the roster correctly…..we have talent on both sides of the ball….at this point, its the coaches job to maximize that talent…..no one with a straight face can say these coaches have maximized the talent on this roster…..simple as that….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  6. Robert Says:

    @altbucs

    “Fitz torched???”

I think you answered your own question

  7. TOM Says:

The best QB prospect we ever had? BS! What about Steve Young or Doug Williams?

  8. Loyaltotheend Says:

In 45 starts he hasn’t done much to show he’s a franchise qb. Time for him to put it all together and lead this team to some wins instead of being one of the reasons for all the losing. It’s not all on Jameis but let’s see him

    -consistently make smart decisions
-read th defense correctly and hit the open guy (no need to force it to his Favorites Evans and Brate with all these weapons)
    -protect the ball
    -be accurate with the ball

If you don’t see him do those things consistently he will be out of here along with the coaches

There’s a few of them. There’s one at the top of the thread.

  10. LJ'sDaddy Says:

Tom…Look at career stats all time. Jameis holds the records for some of the best seasons top ten including number one. Steve Young and Doug Williams don’t even come close. In fact, historically Vinny Testeverde was better than both of them. Yes, Young became a HOFer. Not here. People who do not think that Jameis is the best QB we have ever had are just amazing to me. Look at the stats. Jameis will hold all the records, in less games, in one to two years. C’MON Man.

  11. Robert Says:

fitz is brad johnson, trent dilfer

he’s good enough to lead this group. thats all that is required. remove the turnovers from the qb and we have a shot.

hopefully jw can do that. we shall see. I say give him his shot the next 2-3 games and then fish or cut bait.

  12. LJ'sDaddy Says:

    Bucs Single Season Stats
Jameis holds three of the top ten quarterback seasons, all time. Including #1, 3, and 8. He has only played three seasons!

Top 5 Bucs QB all-time stats
    #1 Vinny T Played 5 seasons, had a 52% completion percentage, for 14,000 yards77 TD/112 INT, 64.4 rating.
#2 Josh Freeman also played 5, seasons 58% completion percentage, for 13,000 yards 80 TD/66 INT, 78.8 rating.
    #3 Trent Dilfer played 5 seasons, 55% completion, 13,000 yards, 70 TD/ 80 INT, 69.4 rating.
#4 Doug Williams played while I was in Tampa…I have his autograph, met him twice…5 seasons, 47% completion, 12,000 yards, 73 TD/ 73 INT, 66.2 rating.
    #5 Jameis HE HAS PLAYED 3 SEASONS, 60.8% completion, 12,000 yards, 69 TD/44 INT, 87.2 rating.

You still don’t think he is the best QB we have ever had??? Respectfully, you are dead wrong. He will own every record in one to two years…probably a year less time than the top four quarterbacks in our history.

  13. BigBucs_GA Says:

18-27 career record. Never had a defense or a running game. Just look at the last 5 games in 2017 when he returned from injury. Many argue that Winston is the reason for the Green Bay lost. If we look closer after the turnover Winston lead the team back to take the lead but the defense couldn’t stop Green Bay. Same thing the following week vs Detroit. Lead the Bucs back to tie the game up and defense let Detroit drive down and kick the game winning FG. Lets not forget the Caroline game. Yeah Winston had 3 fumbles but you still had the lead. The defense still just couldn’t close out a game. That has been the case Jameis entire stint.

  15. Marlow Says:

JW may have good numbers as the season progresses because he does have highly qualified weapons to catch the ball, see Fitzmagic. Will he, and can he make smarter decisions with the ball in terms of turnovers i.e. interceptions, and holding the ball too long for sack fumble opportunities to occur. Can he stop pre-game nonsense where he gets himself overly jacked and eat’s “W’s.” Can he be stable and bring a sense of calmness and confidence to his team? When he is out of control, they are going to be out of control. I hope to see a rational pre-game pump up session with few words, and then watch the team play well w/o turnovers, because the team cannot afford to give away possessions with our defense behind so bad.

  16. adam from ny Says:

they should give jameis what they gave fitz…give him the 2nd quarter of the season and see what he can do…if he stinks it up go back to fitz…and sign him for next year…one of these guys is getting a contract…the other isn’t…

  18. pelbuc Says:

Let him audition these next 12 games and quit tying him to the horrid D. If he keeps the turnovers to a minimum and is able to score lots of points with this offense, which he should, then you let him play out the the 5th yr option next year to see if he can consistently lead the offense and put up points, especially during crunch time in a close game if the D will allow such a scenario. If he plays well for 2 consecutive yrs, then you sign him to a long term deal full of lots of clauses regarding his off the field conduct. Remember, he’s one incident away from banishment.

  19. adam from ny Says:

with fitz…if you give him the job and let him get in the comfort zone that it is his job, he will settle in and be fine for a year or two

  20. adam from ny Says:

fitz will also make a cool azz santa in like 25 years, working at a sears, taking photos with kids on his lap, with a jolly azz belly and a big white azz beard…

  21. Blue-footed booby Says:

The long term answer to the quarterback position for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is not currently on the roster, and almost certainly won’t be solved by this current regime. It is what it is, and it’ll take some folks on here longer than others to understand the cold, sober reality.

  22. Dewey Selmon Says:

pelbuc took the words right off my fingertips.

  23. Darin Says:

    Robert
Lmao. You obviously never watched all Dilfers games. Or any. To say fitz is dilfer is insane. Dilfer was the worst qb this team ever had, and that’s saying alot. I went to just about every game he played here. Pathetic. Fitz just broke nfl records. Good ones. Dilfer might hold a few for the other reasons

  24. Robert Says:

    @ darin

i.e dilfer, brad johnson….both Bucs QB’s who were journeymen and led teams to superbowl wins.

    what are you 12?

  25. Season Is Over Says:

Why is this a surprise? No one has an answer on Winston. You never know which Winston walks onto the field each Sunday.

  28. rob Says:

Jameis is a bottom 12 NFL quarterback. He is likely to stay there because he keeps getting out performed by newer younger players. He has shown no real improvement from what he did as a rookie.

  29. adam from ny Says:

i have a trent dilfer auth ravens jersey and i might have a dilfer auth browns jersey in my stash too…he was very abused in tampa and had it ruff from fans and media alike…often called trent dildo on the radio…i was a dilfer fan tho…glad to see him grab a ring out in baltimore a few years later…good dude too

  30. Lord Cornelius Says:

He’s objectively by far the best QB we’ve ever drafted in terms of his immediate performance and it isn’t really close. He’s improved every year in all passing categories; and would have back to back winning seasons despite a shoulder injury if the D/Special teams held up at the end of the game.

But I will let his play the rest of this year speak for itself. If our D continues to be this horrifically bad; and we end up with even 8 wins; that means our offense balled out.

Hopefully the D can be like 20-24th best type D. That’d be a huge improvement sadly. But a super reasonable expectation.

  31. AtlBuc Says:

BigBucs_GA Don’t forget the Buffalo game when JW came back to take the lead with under 2 minutes and the D let Tyrod Taylor drive down for the win

  32. adam from ny Says:

everyone should realize numbers have gotten skewed heavily for qb’s as it is more so a passing league than ever before…just like brown is the new black, 300 yards is the new 200 yards…and 3 td’s is the new 2 td’s…numbers are up and a 200 yard 2 td day is now a 300 yard 3 td day…everyone is having 300 yard passing days now…it used to be the benchmark of an amazing passing day yardage-wise…

with that in mind, jameis has not grown much as a player from rookie year until now…he sort of is who he is…and is down to his final audition right now…jameis is like an nba player with low on-court iq…like a carmelo anthony…always has a nice stat sheet, but doesn’t make the players around him better…he might have more raw talent than fitz, but can’t convert it on-field…

if you’re a gm or study players, let’s see how he uses djax’s tools in the coming weeks…fitzie certainly knew how to maximize what djax has in his arsenal…jameis didn’t know how to max out the talent around him last year like we have seen fitz do the first 3 weeks…it will be interesting to see what jameis does the next few weeks because he is auditioning for the bucs and every other gm as well

  33. adam from ny Says:

that being said, i hope jameis lights it up and we win 3 of the next 4

  34. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

more garbage chatter from another underachieving has been that should work on his craft he sucks on tv

  35. ndog Says:

What is clear is that some people don’t seem to understand football. Before Jameis got hurt last, just from his numbers alone, he was on pace to walk into the Hall of Fame with no questions asked. Drew Brees did not throw for 4,000 yards till his 6th year in the league, Aaron Rodgers did not throw for 4,000 till his 4th year and he had 13 picks that year. It just takes some guys some time to put it all together and Jameis has already done things that few have EVER done at his age/time in the league. So when people say we should get rid of him you just really have to wonder if they have any idea what they are talking about.

  36. AtlBuc Says:

I learned something really important recently; a lot of what we saw Sunday against the Bears was blown assignments, not scheme. I saw plays where 2 Bucs defenders were the only players on the whole side of the field. I saw Justin Evans run upfield to cover a running back when a receiver ran right past him into the wide open wilderness for a touchdown. I saw a lot of plays where players were just plain out of position. I saw Justin Evans fall down while his man caught the ball and scored. We still have far too many of these days but if that was the case, it still falls on Smitty, but, it’s more fixable. Hopefully, this layoff will help our rookies on the backend catch up a little. After seeing the defensive blunder of some of our rookies, I feel a LOT better moving forward. I don’t think its as bad as it seems

  37. go for the face30 Says:

Staring down receivers and atleast one circus clown ass play a game. Cant wait!!

  38. ndog Says:

And you guys keep referring to Fitz like he is some beast of a player. You do realize he threw 3 picks on 3 throws that lost us a game just 2 weeks ago right? Just wondering cause you guys keeping acting like he is freaking Joe Montana or something. Just imagine what you would be saying if Jameis did that? Now ask yourself why you feel differently about the two? Just saying….

  39. Larry woods Says:

Some of you “fans” are hilarious. You y’all about jameis’ 4 seasons but only talk about fitz’ games This season and last season lol. If he was the answer, he wouldn’t have played on a third of the teams in the league smh. Fact is, It doesn’t matter who the qb is as long as smitty is the defensive coordinator

  40. Robert Says:

ndog, back off the purple drank man.

only one of those picks was on fitz, you know it, I know it, players know and admitted it……….

oh, and one was on Mike Evans, the guy who tanked the beginning of the last 2 games to get jw back cause djax is kickin his a$$!!!!!

  43. Bucsfanman Says:

Look, in terms of upside and talent, absolutely Jameis is the best QB the Bucs have ever had. But please, for the love of everything football stop trotting out his statistics to compare with QBs of yester-year. It is a VASTLY different era. What Jameis is doing has quickly become the new norm.
Secondly, his statistics mean absolutely diddly if the Bucs aren’t winning games. I would rather have a QB that has 3,000 yards passing and 12 wins than a QB with 4,000+ yards and 5 wins.
Jameis needs to put everything together now and we’ll be alright. The tools are there.

    Temper expectations

  49. ndog Says:

How about the throw he missed on 3rd down on the first drive to ME for a 1st down, or the throw he missed Godwin wide open on a corner route wide open, or the throw he forced to OJ over the middle where he had DJax wide open for a 1st on 3rd and short, or the throw on the last drive to win the game to ME deep, or the throw on 2nd down on that drive to Hump where he threw it right to the defender or the throw on 3rd down on that drive where his arm was not strong enough to get the ball in the open hole to avoid the defenders and allow Brate to catch it? I guess those are all the fault of the wind or the clouds in the sky right?

  50. Micheal Savoie Says:

As far as QB controversy is concerned, without a stifling defense, no QB will have a winning season here. Fitz was overlooked in games 1 and 2, which is why he was able to rack up some points. Once teams took him seriously, he struggled. Teams take Jameis seriously, because they don’t want him to put up points against them. It is a matter of perspective.

  51. adam from ny Says:

it’s a cerebral and poise issue with jameis…we do want him to succeed and win as bucs fans…putting the ball in fitzbeardrick’s hands can only last a year or two at best…jameis can sling balls for 10 more years if he puts it together…longterm jameis is the best solution if he can be all he can be…

Yes fans of the other teams went through it too.

    Trade Fitz….the phone won’t ring.

  55. LakeLand Says:

According to Football Outsiders, Bucs O-Line are ranked 32nd in run game, 9th in pass protection. Bucs defense ranked 32nd in total defense. I believe the Bucs need to go 8-4 in these remaining 12 games to have a shot at the playoffs. If the run game stinks, and the defense stinks. That put a lot of pressure on the QB, he has to do too much. I don’t care who is the Bucs starting QB. He won’t get much help from the defense or the run game, unless things changes.

They will not go 8-4 without a run attack and defense

  56. charles Stevens Says:

I believe in Jameis as the long term soloution for the Bucs at qb,However the defense has to improve.
No matter who you put in there when your team is trailing bye 14 or 21 youre going to get just what pittsburgh and the bears dished out.Blitz after Blitz and Qb pressure from start to finish.
Doesnt really leave jameis and the bucs in a position to be successfull.

  57. TheBucsAnthem Says:

  64. Lord Cornelius Says:

For the “Jameis has not improved since his rookie year” crowd:

    2015 58.3% 7.56 YPA 22 TD 15 Int (1.45 TD to Int Ratio)

    2016 60.8% 7.21 YPA 28 TD 18 Int (1.55 TD to Int Ratio)

2017 (with a hurt shoulder in multiple games) 63.8% 19 TD 11 Int (1.72 TD to Int Ratio)

Please stop saying this. It’s objectively wrong.

  65. Lord Cornelius Says:

Jameis basically played 12 games last year based on when he went out in a few games hurt.

Prorating his stats from 2017; even though he was hurt for a few of the early games:

    4600 yards / 26 TD / 14 Int

So even for the “everyone puts up stats” crowd; in 2017 that would have been top 10 QB fantasy #’s – right above Drew Brees and right below/ close to Ben Roethlisburger/Philip Rivers/Kirk Cousins.

  66. D1 Says:

    NDog,

“Aaron Rodgers didn’t throw for 4000 yrs until his 4th yr and he 13 ints”

    Seriously!!!
Aaron Rodgers didn’t start a game until his 4th yr. Yeah it took some time, time for him to play. His first season 16 games 4000 yds. 13 ints you seem to imply that as not good…He had 28 TD’ s vs 13 ints.

JW 28TD’ s in a season w 18 picks. 11 picks last year with 3 full games missed.

  67. T REX Says:

LJ’s Daddy – stop with the stats crap. It’s for losers. A series of rule changes across the last 40 years, and more acutely over the last 20, has fueled offensive innovations that have ushered the N.F.L. to a juncture where quarterbacks are throwing more often, and for more yards, and completing a greater percentage of their passes, than in any other season. Through four weeks, more than half the starting quarterbacks — 18 of 32 — are on a pace to throw for more than 4,000 yards, with four in line to smash Manning’s single-season record of 5,477: Derek Carr, Kirk Cousins, Jared Goff and Ben Roethlisberger. Everybody’s throwing for 4000 these days.

  68. ben Says:

Winston LIED to the team and fans. He doesn’t seem very accurate on throwing long hitting receivers in stride. He is not show to be able to carry the team on his back so ,,,trade him and move on!!

  69. D1 Says:

    Lord Corn,

If you look back at the stats, the Arizona and Cardinals games are the two that you can make a case that his shoulder effected his play. Arizona is the first reported shoulder injury, some people say the Vikings game, the next game vs buffalo was absolutely a lights out game.

So the actual effects of his shoulder injury is clear cut in the card game and the 3 he sat. I include the saints because the stats are an anomaly. But overall, his first 5 games vs last 5 are similar. The best game was the very next week after the cardinals game.

  70. D1 Says:

    Lord Corn,

Why do you exclude QBR when you post those numbers? I have read more than 30 times your “improved yr to yr” stats, not once have I seen QBR listed.
    Why not?

  71. D1 Says:

    ^^Cardinals and Saints^^^

  72. mike Says:

@lord… prorating stats. Should we do that for fitz? He’s baically 4-3 as a starter, so if a journey that no one would want as a starter is 4-3, that’s 9 wins a season and over 30tds can do that then why can’t jameis do better? It works both way. Then if you include the fumbles AND INTs , then your over TD to turnover ratio is at 1 to 1 which is ugly. Add a suspension and while I think he’s the answer, You can see why the Bucs want to see it. Also, not going to be able to keep all these weapons forever. Some times I just wonder how high the ceiling is. The turnovers , decision making and the length of time it takes to get rid of the ball and be accurate leave us worried. I predicit he lighs up ATL. He will have a HUGE day and at 3-2, we will be in it.

  73. D1 Says:

    Lord Corn and …

The best QB the Bucs drafted by performance right out the gate. If you’re looking at as soon as the player hit the field …….Josh Freeman. I know his name is not to be spoken. Yes We all know how the story ends but the end of first year and his first year as a starter was one that saw him set team records across the board.
I don’t know how many team records, if any, he still holds but it was an impressive start.

Doug Williams and Steve Young are the two QB’ s that are mentioned in the JW conversations. Joe says Steve Young is the best ….not even close. Freeman is
the only name that can be mentioned with Winston.

  74. rob Says:

JW is not a top 20 NFL QB and may never be. He is not the worst problem with the team by any means, or would Fitz be. The problems are really we have bad ownership, they can’t attract and keep quality here. On the field, the defense is horrible, as is the run game, and OL is marginal. Qb is not the major problem.

Lol @ QBR. Useless bullsh1t stat that has tons of subjective crap built in.

And fine don’t pro rate anything. His per full game stats were still top 10-12 fantasy #s.

Point is he improved every year
Point is he is a top 1/3 QB

Based on objective passing stats at least. That’s all.

  76. Destinjohnny Says:

    I have the answer
Jameis is the 21st best qb after 3 years
I don’t think he has the god given gifts to be elite
Not a bust by any means though.
I do think on day he will be between 12-15th

  77. Destinjohnny Says:

Blowing the ro jo pick and not having an elite back hurt him
But he does have the best receiving core in the nfl

No I did not imply I clearly stated in his 4th year he threw for 4,000 yards. If you think your 4th year in the league, after learning from a 1st ballot half of famer, is the same as someone’s 1st year in the league then that is on you my friend. I just live in the real world and understand that learning and growing and maturing actually helps you improve but apparently you think playing in your 4th year in the league and playing in the league as a rookie is the same. Well ok then.

  79. SOEbuc Says:

ALL BAD COACHING SINCE JAMEIS WAS 20 WHEN HE GOT HERE AND HE’S STILL SET RECORDS. He could go to another team with good coaching and less weapons and could very likely get into the playoffs every year. Put him in the division with the Dolphins, Jets, and Bills and he would win a division title every year, lol.

  80. cmurda Says:

Tiki’s comments are stupidity. There doesn’t need to be an answer on a JW extension. Jameis will give the answer over the course of the next several weeks. If Jameis shows maturity in his decision making and looks like the real deal on the field, then he will get his extension.

  81. uckinator Says:

Begrudgingly, I must say “It’s coaching. I thought when Koettner and smitty were starting their freshman year in Tampa; that all was right with the world. But… Koettner is too loyal to people that can’t cut it anymore. Painful to see. A bad loss in Atlanta and the axeman will cometh.

  82. BrianBucs Says:

Vince Young, Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Byron Leftwich, Jameis Winston

  83. D the Bucs fan Says:

    87. What about Tim Rattay, Brian Griese, Byron Leftwich, Luke McCown, Bruce Gradkowski, Jake Plummer, they all inspired hope for a Superbowl.

  84. FortMyersDave Says:

Look. Winston is better than Marcus Mariota. No doubt about that. Mariota is injury prone and below average. I shudder to think if Marcus would still be alive if he had the Bucs OL. That being said Winston still is not a great qb and IMHO not worthy of the 1st overall pick lovie tanked to get…… JW has to go 7-5 down the stretch and finish out of last to be offered an extension and save Koetters job as Dork unfortunately anchored himself to the Leeman Bennett of DCs in Mikey Smith….
