Brent Grimes Has A Significant Groin Injury

September 7th, 2018

Brutal news

This is a fresh Friday groin stomp to Buccaneers fans everywhere.

Terrible news flowing from One Buc Palace today. Arguably the most valuable player on the Bucs defense — in part because of the depth behind him — somehow got injured in the last 24 hours and did not practice in today’s traditional light Friday session. Brent Grimes, the Bucs’ best cornerback, is “doubtul” for Sunday per the team’s injury report.

News broke after Dirk Koetter’s news conference today.

And here come the Saints with Michael Thomas, Ted Ginn, several other key weapons and a quarterback who knows how to spot weaknesses.

If Grimes doesn’t go, then it’ll be either Ryan Smith or likely one of the rookies, M.J. Stewart or Carlton Davis, starting opposite Vernon Hagreaves. Can Joe order a case of Maalox on Amazon? Likely it’ll be Davis with Stewart more suited for nickel corner.

Oh, boy. This is brutal news and it’s hard to expect Grimes to be a fast healer at 35 years old.

Grimes’ durability came up on the Ira Kaufman Podcast last week. Remember, his wife said he never played last season at better than 80 percent healthy.

What the f! Where the heck did this come from!

  2. Big Boss Bucs Fan Says:

I am scared to watch this bloodbath! This just totally bummed me out. Start Drew Brees in your fantasy leagues cause he is gonna have a career day. It’s gonna be dark Sunday afternoon for us Bucs fans………..sigh. I will have the Bourbon and crack cocaine ready for sure.

get used to it buc fans. Didn’t think he would play 10 games this year at his age… now I think he plays 6.

  5. VA BUC Says:

Lmmfao what’s new?…this guy finds away to get hurt every single time we have something huge about to happen it never fails i gaureentee he’s out until the Bears game smdh…i tell you what we BETTER NOT SIGN HIMBACK NEXT YR he’s no longer worth it da heck with him and miko im sorry not sorry the dude age shows injury prone the reason Miami let him go been saying this 😡😡😡😡

  6. Chris in WA Says:

Vinny Curry didn’t participate in practice as well it looks like. It does say “Non Injury related” wonder what that’s about?

Have the Bucs sniffed around the leauge for a Veteran Corner? What is Robert McClain up to?

  7. Syl Says:

They have to go with the young guys anyway.

  8. doolnutts Says:

    Speechless…

  9. Buccernutter Says:

    This made me sick.

But… Our defense will be much more dependant on the pass rush than breent Grimes. Our boys will be fine if we can get in Brees’ face.

Grimes will be out 4 weeks. Watch. I was sick when we didn’t sign another vet corner. Terrible coaching mistake.

  10. The Buc Realist Says:

Don’t worry, the sheep have been saying “the roster is set” all off-season long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Etzel Says:

Just please don’t put Ryan Smith out there. Fire everyone if #29 starts outside.

  12. JimmyJack Says:

S**t happens and it happens to every team. If you can’t lean on 2nd string guys to give you effective snaps you never had a chance anyways.

Our coaching staff knows the implications. They have thought about all the scenarios and they have built this roster with the guys they wanted. Now it’s time to put up or shut up.

  13. feelthepewterpower Says:

Two words: magensium oil….. like every hour until game time. He’ll be healed with it! Plus supplement with magnesium.

  14. JimmyJack Says:

Just look at any good team if you want to know why injuries should not be such a huge Factor all the time. Take for example the Eagles last night they lost their best corner during the game.

In case you didn’t know what happened their backup came in and made an interception in the endzone.

when bad teams have their backups come in they get burnt like they don’t belong in the league

  15. Gobucs Says:

    6-10

Believe it now more than before

  16. SOEbuc Says:

Another rookie whitehead needs to be put in. Can’t have Conte playing way back missing tackles all day.

  17. horse liver Says:

What the hell happened? Dude doesn’t play in preseason games and groins himself? Doing what????????????????

  18. solinor Says:

Fire the strength and conditioning coach!!! We have the most injuries out of any NFL team ever year!!

  19. horse liver Says:

Go sign Robert McClain off of the street. He isn’t worse than Ryan Smith even on one leg.

  20. Hawaiian Buc Says:

No big deal. We just have 2 rookie corners, VH3, and Ryan Smith going up against a Hall of Famer. We should be fine as long as our backup 35 year old QB can lead us to 50 points on the road in a dome against a completely healthy division winning playoff team.

  21. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Fire the strength and conditioning coach!!! We have the most injuries out of any NFL team ever year!!”

    ———–

Simply not true, although it does often feel like it. Every team has injuries, and every team’s fans believe their team has the most.

  22. JimmyJack Says:

Horse lol it doesn’t take much to pull a groin bro. Hahaha, might think you need to limber up a little and do some physical activity and get off them games man.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This is what happens when you try to avoid injury…next man up

  24. SOEbuc Says:

All our rookie Dbs and VH3 looked good entire preseason. Keep the faith until after you see them play one game at least ya bummers.

And CD3 no doubt needs to start over Ryan Smith at #2. Time to give a call to Deveon Harris and Robert McClain a call Jason.

  25. SOEbuc Says:

    Devonte Harris*

  26. JimmyJack Says:

But do agree with McClain as some insurance.

  27. mark2001 Says:

Hate to say it, but that is what happens when you count on an older guy at one of the more athletic positions, no matter how well he takes care of himself. Funny that Gruden has gotten so much criticism for signing a bunch of older guys…while we have a much younger team…. but it is the few older guys on our team that may be our undoing.

  28. Buc4evr Says:

This injury stuff is par for the course with the Bucs. As usual, our GM does a poor job of addressing critical need areas. They know that Grimes is at the end of his career and prone to injury yet they didn’t address CB with proven FA’s in the off season. Ryan Smith… ugh. Koetter won’t survive this mess.

Wonder if Smitty will play for all the marbles and bring multiple blitz packages and play man coverage often? If we play 7 to 10 yards off of the receivers with our rookie CB’s we are going to get killed. The only way to stop Brees is to bring pressure up the middle. Not sure I really want to watch this game now… its going to be very painful.

  29. bucsfanforlife Says:

This is exactly why I can’t believe we never signed any experienced DB help (and some is still out there) before the start of the season. As god as Grimes may be, he is 35 and is now so painfully obvious, he most likly wont be ble to hold up through the season. How can Bucs management not see this when every day fans can see this as a problem in the making.

  30. SOEbuc Says:

And have no clue how Javion Elliot has stayed on this team. He is smelly garbage. We gave up our ST captain in Josh Robinson for the CB position Elliot has.

  31. mark2001 Says:

Go Bucs… many experts were saying five or six games max this year to begin with. Would hate to think we can’t reach that… but six games right now sounds very optimistic.

  32. SOEbuc Says:

Smith better be playing these guys closer to the line. Grimes was the only one that was good at playing that deep CB position.

  33. ATrain Says:

Is it me or does this team get hurt a lot

    New Trainers need???

Or is the Soft Mentality affecting this team

First round hurt before first preseason game

    Major question

  34. mark2001 Says:

If Koetter, Smith, and Licht don’t survive this year, they will have these seven words on their pink slips…. Too many losses…too many personnel mistakes.

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Even with a doubtful label I’ll take my normal stance of trying not to pay it much mind til his official status Sunday morning.

Call me crazy but I don’t really enjoy worrying about the game for more then two days(the morning after always hurts).

I’d also like to point a finger at all the folks that call Grimes injury prone. I’ve seen his stats and I call Bull on that. As I said before if there is a stat or part of the equation I’m missing then clue me in……..I’ve yet to get any response to that request.

    GOO BUCS

  36. 813bucboi Says:

don’t worry….the “real” fans say this staff is good enough to cover up holes in the roster….we have defensive guru smitty….

    totally confident right guys!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  37. JimmyJack Says:

SOE ………Josh was our special teams captain but that junk ST last year was well below average.

Good luck to Josh but maybe it’s time he go captain somewhere else this year.

  38. Issaic haggins Says:

It’s no secret at all they had to sign a veteran corner ,Grimes can’t be your best corner because history says he’s not even got to play at 100% for 25% of the games. To not to find a veteran guard and sign a veteran corner is about as unthinkable as you can get . That pass rush had better be on nitro and as far as I’m concerned Cameron Brate has way less value than a good guard or corner and there’s plenty of teams that would trade for Brate. Well perhaps not at 6 mil unless the other player has a capital 5 to 7 . I truly question at times whether Jason L understands the goal is to win a Super Bowl. You know you have no experience corners you have a starting linebacker thought there’s no way he starting and you have trash it guard and you have money and options to address it but you don’t. Well I hope the rookie corners show out on Sunday and the line doesn’t give up for sacks prove me wrong Jason.

  39. mark2001 Says:

Jimmy…as you age, all the “normal statistics” go out the window. Sooner or later EVERYBODY breaks down. No reflection on the kind of guy Grimes is…just the human condition.

  40. 813bucboi Says:

Smith better be playing these guys closer to the line. Grimes was the only one that was good at playing that deep CB position.

    BINGO!!!!

so where’s all those fans that was pounding the table to resign grimes…..I didn’t want because of 2things…..he cant play man and he’s often injured……

the question is, will smitty adjust?……I doubt it…..1player goes down and its prevent defense…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  41. 813bucboi Says:

looks like miko and grimes cashed out on the glazers again……oh boy….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  42. Buc believer Says:

Smittys D with his 10 yards off the receiver mentality is going to get roasted this first game. It could get 42-3 better yet 42-0 blowout. Tough days to be a Buc fan especially with those hideous “new” cheerleaders uniforms. It’s like the Glazers think that all the girls have varicose veins that need to be hidden!

  43. JimmyJack Says:

813……I still like Smitty. That’s right I don’t care if you guys tease me about that.

All I can say is his D over performed one year and underperformed in one. Could go either way this year IMO. It’s easy to have kneejerk reactions sometimes and with Mike Smith that could be the case.

Okay that’s all I got for now I’m out.

  44. SOEbuc Says:

    Jimmy Jack

Everything I remember about Robinson is that he always was in the returners face one second after they caught it. That’s how he became a captain on the ST which is below average which makes it even worse we got rid of him.

  45. TonyC Says:

You’re going to be pleasantly surprised how we manage to pull this off. 3 plus sacks predicted.

  46. Not there yet Says:

I know I was one of the few saying he’s too old to make that kind of money AND he wouldn’t stay healthy all year. Dude got injured in practice lol a 35 year old dude can’t be your best corner, it’s a young man’s game.

I’m not worried unless Dirk puts Ryan Smith out there first which is exactly what will happen

  47. LakeLand Says:

What do you expect from a 40 year old undersized CB? I hope the Bucs wasn’t expecting 16 games and a Pro Bowl from him.

  48. TonyC Says:

Still think Licht is a myopic GM. Why didn’t they sign another veteran corner?

  49. Not there yet Says:

Hopefully we’ll see you press coverage now

  50. Chris in WA Says:

I still have faith in Ronald Jones but it’s looking like now more than ever that Derwin James should have been the first pick. I honestly don’t see Vita Vea playing before the Bye Week. The secondary is the weakest link in the chain still.

Hindsight is 20/20. I’ll still be rooting for the Bucs on Sunday!

  51. Buc1987 Says:

    It’s okay…we don’t need him anyways…Fitzpatrick is our QB.

    QB’s win the games.

If the Bucs lose on Sunday….it’s Fitzpatrick’s record.

Not the Bucs record keep that in mind.

Oh wait…that’s right I forgot that only applies to Jameis Winston.

We don’t need Grimes….we’ve got Fitzy!!

  52. The Buc Realist Says:

WOW!!!!! Some of these “so-called fans” have not been this happy since lovie smith was hired for the Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

#trust the coaches!!!!! fix the “real” problem!!!!!! the roster!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  53. SOEbuc Says:

I wish Smith was on the field with his old fire. Maybe he has a bad heart. Him and Buck would beat the Sh!t out of this defense if they started lagging.

  54. webster Says:

    @ soebuc

Elliot is on the practice squad. He did not take josh’s spot. Also, josh is not eligible for the practice squad. Come on buc fans.

  55. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I think we will be ok if they use M.J. Stewart or Carlton Davis to replace Grimes. Just please do not let Ryan Smith man the position.

  56. Tampabucfan88 Says:

Hey if the pass rush do what is suppose to do I believe davis M.J. and VH3 will be fine also even if grimes was 100% if the d line is no good then what’s the point I’m confident in the dline they gotten better each game and the red zone defense improved so much so chill

  57. BucEmUp Says:

Lets see here….we have two rookie corners who PREFER and WANT to play press coverage and a third year corner who has PROVEN to play better and ALSO PREFERS to play press coverage.

HOW MUCH MONEY YOU WANNA BET THAT THE NICKEL CORNER IS THE ONLY ONE PLAYING WITHIN 5 YARDS OF THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE!!!!! BET DAMMIT!!!!!!!!

OUR CLOWN OF A DC SAID JUST HOURS AGO THAT THEY NEED TO PUT THE PLAYERS IN A POSITION TO WHERE THEY WILL PLAY THEIR BEST RIGHT????!!!!!!! I will bet the farm comfortably that we play off coverage the entire frieking game!!! HES A SCARED HOPELESS INCOMPETENT MAN WHO HAS NO BISINESS COACHING!!!! OHHHHHHH BOYYYYY THIS IS GONNA BE GOOD!!!! THREE YEARS IN A ROW WITH THE WORST COVERAGE UNIT AND IT STILL WONT BE HIS FAULT RIGHT??????!!!!!!!!!

Good coaches get the most out of their players. Bad coaches make them ALL look like busts. Mike Smith is a bad DC and needs to go. I’m actually looking forward to this beatdown. This should be one of the most pathetic displays of coverage ever. I can see Drew Brees actually dialing it back though just to be a gentleman. Maybe a td in the first quarter followed by field goals. Then another in the second followed by field goals. Funny thing is that he is actually going to have to TRY and NOT throw touchdowns just to be a nice guy LOL!!!! MIKE SMITH YOUR DONE BUDDY! JUST LEAVE!!!!!

  58. SOEbuc Says:

We’ll be playing hot garbage Foles next week. But also have to deal with freight train Fletcher Cox.

  59. Bill Says:

    Lol.
    Another well-constructed Jason Licht team!

  60. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

It could be worse, Falcon’s Safety Keanu Neal tore his ACL and will out the season.

  61. GhostofSchiano Says:

Wasn’t it stated in some earlier post/topic this year that if the Bucs had a legitimate pass rush just about anyone can come in here and play corner and do okay. If this “Revamped-Retooled” D-line can put some pressure on the qb opportunities may present themselves for our secondary to make some plays.

No reason to get all smitty about it.

  62. TonyC Says:

Ok Hargreaves and Davis outside with Stewart in the slot. This is the future let’s see what we have.

  63. Not there yet Says:

Lol everyone taking shots at Jason licht let’s see your post saying your against resigning Grimes because 90% of you got just what you wanted. Including the Joe’s,

  64. Not there yet Says:

He’ll look like a genius is the roomies stand their ground but they still lose because most of you expect that anyway

  65. Rod Munch Says:

Remember the Minnesota game last year? Well Drew Brees is a lot better than the backup that the Vikings put out there.

Jesus F’n Christ… This team is going to be 0-3 by the time Jameis gets back and they have to go to Chicago where they’re 5-21 all-time…

Is Dirk fired during the bye week? I doubt that happens, but man, if Ryan Smith is in the game, or God forbid starts, then Jason Licht also needs to be fired.

  66. LakeLand Says:

What will this defense look like with Derwin James in the secondary?…..Oh I forgot the Bucs passed on him for Vita “the invisible one” Vea.

  67. lokog Says:

man I wish we still had sapp and company

  68. SOEbuc Says:

Hey how bout that practice time Justin Evans put in at nickel?

  69. BigMacAttack Says:

The Falcons list half of their d backs last night as they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Neither Atl or Phili looked good last night. The are the best team we will play this season. It’s one game and the Bucs are hungry. I still like our chances in NO.

  70. Issaic haggins Says:

Not so sure Hardgraves on the outside is the future ??

  71. King C Says:

Wow sure would be nice to have Derwin James right about now.
Worse than Grimes being out, what happens if Hargreaves or the other starter gets injured. hope the rookies do well but fully expect Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn to ball out

  72. donuts Says:

There was a reason I said bet the OVER earlier this week.

  73. SOEbuc Says:

    Lakeland

You sound like one of those FSU fans that were bitching all year last cus we got OJ instead of Cook who snapped his leg 2 games in. At least Vea got injured early and is not on IR. OJ is continuing to be a standout player so wait to see Vea play before you start bitching.

  74. buc15 Says:

    dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmit man

  75. LakeLand Says:

    lol

Yeah right the Bucs needed a run-stuffing DT more than a playmaker in the secondary. The 32nd pass ranked defense in the NFL. Bottom feeders think like that.

  76. Bobby M. Says:

Classic Bucs….we have the worst luck. Build the d-line up with free agents and a top pick….free agent has concussion issue….draft pick hasn’t played all preseason or training camp.

Roll the dice with depth issues in the secondary….lose our best secondary player.

Of course this is on top of our “franchise” QB being suspended for the toughest stretch of the season….#NeverFails

  77. Trench War Says:

wow this really blows. where is McClain? Looks like FSU CB Javien Elliott will be in the mix as well. In fact I would probably lean on Elliott before I would Ryan Smith from what I’ve seen but what do I really know?. it’s JMO ..Go Bucs!

  78. SOEbuc Says:

    King C

“what happens if Hargreaves or the other starter gets injured.”

BIG KNOCK ON WOOD. Would hope they would put in Devonte Harris but no it would be Ryan Smith. Bucs 5-11. But KEEP THE FAITH!!! GO BUCS!!!

  79. LakeLand Says:

It don’t matter where Derwin James went toi school. It was very obvious the team needed secondary help more so than a fat DT. Enjoy the 4 wins this season, if that many.

  80. 813bucboi Says:

    SOE

foles will be coming off 10days of preparing for the bucs……and last time I checked, we get back up QB’s paid!!!!!!….case keenum ring a bell…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  81. Rod Munch Says:

As of yesterday the Saints only had two running backs on their roster, Kamara and Mike Gillislee who they just signed from the Patriots this week. That’s it, that’s all they have a RB. So what does that tell you? It tells you they’re not going to bother to run the ball – and why would you? You have a Bucs secondary with the God awful Chris Conte starting, then you might have Ryan Smith starting or being the nickel, and you can throw on him all day long. Well, actually, rather than having a running game since Mike Smith plays everyone 15 yards off the LOS, the Saints can just have Brees toss the ball out to a WR for an easy 8 yards on every play, so why run the ball?

  82. Trench War Says:

maybe bring back Josh Robinson. He has been putting in his time and already knows the defense

  83. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Soft weak organizations are unprepared to deal wiyh any issues p

  84. Mike Johnson Says:

Yet another one..of the many excuses Buc fans will use IF..we lose Sunday. I don’t give a deeyham! Plug in the next man. Get it done. I’m sick of losing Aren’t you? I don’t care if Koeeter and Smitty have to play. Get her done. No excuses.

  85. LakeLand Says:

    Mike Johnson

I guess the best way to improve the NFL 32nd ranked pass defense

1.Resign a undersized injury prone 35 year old CB

    2.Sign 2 run-stuffing DTs in free agency

    3.Draft another run-stuffing DT with the draft’s 12th pick

  86. Trench War Says:

    LakeLand

James is a safety. We drafted a safety in the 4th round with pedigree, Revis’s nephew Jordan Whitehead who has been on the NFL network. A lot of buzz about Whitehead this preseason ..Plus, big man Vita Vea when he’s able to return. 2 for 1 Had we’d taken DJames first where would the draft gone from there. Name one DT taken in the 4th round this past draft that’s been talked about in the preseason. Derwin plays for the Chargers now ..move on

  87. johnnybuc Says:

he sucks. never seen much admiration for an average (at best) old often injured football player, but that just tells u how bad corner back play has been in tampa bay. knew it was a mistake the minute we resigned if your going to dish out that type of money might as well get yourself a quality young player. the fact of the matter is that brent is a decent starting cb in the nfl at this point in his career, you can get away with him being your no 2 guy but having him as your no 1 guy is an absolute liability . it’s exactly why i’m not too worried this yr if this def backfield was going to take a step this yr it was going to have to be one of davis or hargreaves to make a big impact and safeties have to make a huggeee jump .

  88. LakeLand Says:

    Trent War

Derwin James is a playmaker in the secondary, he can play in the Slot,SS, FS, he can even OLB.

This is another bad draft by the Bucs, and the fans should admit it

Their top 2 picks won’t even be on the field Sunday

  93. Trench War Says:

go root for the Chargers man. Railing on Buc fans because you are the expert on everything Derwin James won’t change a damn thing. I hope our team can play without Brent and you can’t convince me that D.James could have taken his place.

  94. SOEbuc Says:

    Lakeland

Bucs haven’t been able to stop the run in years. So yeah, a huge body up the middle helps. We got two CBs in the second and a safety in the fourth that all look like they have a lot of potential to grow into good players.

Especially in the first game of the season, the DL will be gassed quickest and with a reduced rotation, the fatigue will be exacerbated. Now this! It’s hard to imagine the ‘Aints scoring less than 35.

We are 5 years into J. Licht’s rebuild and the apocalypse sets in with the loss of one, non-QB player. What does that tell us? That our favorite teams employs (& just extended) an Irresponsible, inept & unqualified GM.

  103. Trench War Says:

Time for our rookies to step up. ..nothing like trial by fire cause we know Brees and Peyton will try to torch them. Just hope it doesn’t shake their confidence and they learn quickly. Our pass rush needs to get there, and often.

  104. JAB83 Says:

    Fake News…

    Grimes is a healthy scratch…

This is a trail by fire opportunity early in the season…

If we dont win and thats a BIG IF… Everyone expected that anyways…

Grimes was not the make or break factor in this game… Giving him another week to stay fresh is a solid move given the circumstances…

Grimes has the Bucs over a barrel.

Please tell how the hell a 34 yr. old corner (35 when next season begins).
Who missed three games this year – has the Bucs over a barrel?

When there are plenty of younger capable corners hitting the market.

    Example A
    • Bashaud Breeland CB 25
    • E.J. Gaines CB 25
    • Kyle Fuller CB 25
    • Nickell Robey-Coleman CB 25

    Example B
    • Malcolm Butler CB 27
    • Rashaan Melvin CB 28
    • Trumaine Johnson CB 28

Instead of tricking off, money on a one year deal – for a dude contemplating retirement. How about signing a guy like Malcolm Butler for $10-14M – and pick up another corner for $8-9M.

Miko Grimes: Brent Told Mike Smith He Was Retiring (1/10/2018) https://www.joebucsfan.com/2018/01/miko-grimes-brent-told-mike-smith-retiring/

  108. Trench War Says:

Looks like poor Conte will be trying to cover the entire field again. I’m sure the camera will show him giving chase to another busted assignment by a CB and people certainly will accuse him of it. But, what if we had superman S Derwin James? He could single handedly cover all the wide receivers himself. ..yeah right, like a rookie safety would fair better.

  109. Defense Rules Says:

@TonyC … “Still think Licht is a myopic GM. Why didn’t they sign another veteran corner?” That’s what has me confused too. Joe & others, myself included, have said several times that Licht needs to add a veteran OLineman, CB & RB to this team. Grimes goes down, for Lord knows how long if it’s a groin issue, and our most experienced CB is … tada … Vernon Hargreaves. The very same CB that so many wanted to run out of town last year. If Barber goes down, our most experienced RB is Jacquizz (like him, but not as a bell cow). And if any of our OLinemen go down, we’re either putting in Evan Smith or one of several inexperienced OLinemen. Whoopee.

Funny part is that malcontents like Reality-Whatshisname, 813bucboi & BucEmUp will be screaming about how bad Scapegoat Smitty’s play-calling was. And Joe will pile on with his ‘Mike Smith can’t develop young players’. Meanwhile you have an already beaten-up DLine & an almost-rookie Secondary facing the premier QB in the NFC on his home turf. What could possibly go wrong?

  110. Dewey Selmon Says:

New Orleans might not of cared who is calling the plays, but I bet they payed attention to this news.

  111. BoJim Says:

    THE GROIN!!!!

  112. unbelievable Says:

    Damn, this really sucks.

Hopefully they throw one of the rookies in. We all know what Ryan Smith is capable of, and it’s not much. Throw these rookies into the fire and lets’ see who steps up. Hopefully MJ Stewart can go.

Gonna be a long long day in New Orleans.

  113. Brandon Says:

That’s the problem with old players. Never healthy.

  114. Wesley Says:

Seriously this team is cursed. I’m already looking forward to the season ending.

  115. stpetebucsfan Says:

    LMAO

    All the generalizations…the usual observations…

And hey…Why didn’t Licht just run over to Trader Joes and pick up a veteran DB and while he was at it a veteran OL…and another veteran RB would be nice…and given injuries now to our DL…grab another one of those too Todd…

Ah heck with Trader Joes….just go to the players orchard and pull some off the trees where they are growing. I mean how tough can it be to harvest some needed players?

  116. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

@ Lakeland “It don’t matter where Derwin James went toi school. It was very obvious the team needed secondary help more so than a fat DT.”

Don’t understand your beef with Vita Vea. He definitely does NOT look fat at 335lbs. The dude will be anchor on the Dline for years to come. Derwin is a safety which can be found in later rounds. He was no Jalen Ramsey who had the measureable to convert to a top shutdown CB.

  117. unbelievable Says:

You don’t build a defense from the back, you build it from the front.

We already tried that once, it doesn’t matter who is the backfield if you can’t rush the passer.

While our secondary isn’t anything special, the d-line was sorely lacking talent outside of McCoy.

  118. BuccaneerScotty Says:

    Of course he is…

  119. firethecannons Says:

The situation is dire and it is precisely during times like this that stars are made.
Fact: we are going to lose so lets get our new Db’s out there–and let them ball–let them show us–what they are made of. I can’t wait to watch them play. The future Bucs secondary:
MJ, CD3, VH3, Whitehead, Justin Evans, and Isaiah Johnson

  120. Destinjohnny Says:

Saints can be had early in the year.
    Saints 28
    Bucs 17

  121. Rod Munch Says:

Kobe – Haha… best Ryan Smith analogy yet.

  122. Rod Munch Says:

    I think it’s more like:

    Saints: 38
    Bucs: 24

Would love to be wrong, but the best player in your secondary, by far, is now out, and you have to rely on two rookies making their NFL debut or even worse choice in Ryan Smith – not to mention you already have the abortion that is Chris Conte playing. I assume the game will get out of hand early, probably like the Vikings game last year, except the Saint’s defense isn’t nearly as good as the Vikings, so I give the Bucs an extra 7 on offense.

  123. Buc4evr Says:

We have two rookie CBs that like to play press coverage. The only way we win is for Smitty to get his head out of his A** and let our Corners play that way. We need to take chances and bring different blitz packages and put pressure on Brees. No four man rushes, otherwise we are dead. Nothing to lose, play to win and put the hurt on Brees.

  124. JD Says:

Glad the Bucs didn’t trade for Marcus Peters in the off season. #Sarcasm Grimes never can stay healthy or come up big when it counts lets be honest.

  125. Ndog Says:

You guys already giving up on the season are so freaking weak. Why don’t you just give football up and get into cross stitch or something. Freaking wimps crying all the time. Suck it up and play, heck I’m happy if MJ Stewart gets more time maybe he can cause some turnovers.
You cry babies do know the Falcons lost their best saftey for the year last and are already 0-1 and they’re fans aren’t crying. You guys are pitaful.

  126. JimmyJack Says:

Man the comments are out of control……Y’all acting like the bottom just fell out of this team……..We have one guy doubtful. And I guarantee you that the Bucs would like nothing better then for us to have a CB controversy this time next week.

All these comments about buyer’s remorse for not signing somebody else????? Get out from under your rock people. They have nothing but youth at cornerback. That was their plan at the position. They didn’t want a retread they want it fresh blood. They want a rookie out there tomorrow if Grimes can’t go. They don’t want no retread generic CB. They want a playmaker.

The Intriguing part about all of this is that it’s almost like they are personally challenging Joe’s opinion that they cannot develop a cornerback. Lo and behold Joe opinion(which I kinda agree with) will probably be tested in 3 days. Week one of the season………One looking question about this staff and will will get a firm answer on Sunday.

    GOO BUCS!!!!

  127. joestang Says:

I know injuries are part of the game. We should expect players of this age to be injury prone. This GM sucks, can’t he see that we needed depth a cornerback. Instead we draft two rookies when we could have picked up a least one A list free agent corner, such as Malcolm Butler. Once again we end up settling for a B or C player and never get a blue chip free agent that would make a difference. I blame the GM for this.

  128. Kobe Faker Says:

Dont sleep on the Saints being great and winning the superbowl

This will be a statement game to all the NFL teams that saints will dominate

They know to get to the superbowl, homefield is essential in the conf championship game

    Saints/Brees/peyton aint playin this year

    42-17

  129. JimmyJack Says:

    Looming question ****

  130. JimmyJack Says:

Joestang……..rookies don’t count as depth???? Since when? They decided to keep the rookies didn’t they? Yeah you’re right this GM sucks if did keep rookies that can’t play. My assumption is that they kept these rookies because they can play.

We shall see who they start on Sunday. I got to believe that they were prepared for this scenario and they got the guys they want on the roster already.

  131. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

I heard Miko caught him looking at another woman at practice and she showed how she could try out for the Bucs field goal team, straight through the uprights!

Where’s Mr. Miagi when you need him!

  132. Not there yet Says:

Great test for the young corners to see what they got, we just may lose but the injury in well one will help out in the long run

  133. Kgh4life Says:

Just don’t start Ryan Smith, then the Bucs might have a chance. Mike Smith has to take some chances in this game, can’t just sit back in off coverage and allow Brees to scan the field.

  134. LakeLand Says:

    Kobe Faker

The Saints are determine to get off to a good start this season. Mark Ingram is out, I expect for Drew Brees to air it out. I know Michael Thomas, Ted Ginn, Alvin Kamara will get theirs. I’m looking for a good game from new WR Cameron Meredith. I won’t sleep on the Saints defense, I think they are a good, young unit.

    Saints 38
    Bucs 10

Teddy Bridgewater will get some garbage time at QB, maybe toss a touchdown or two.

  135. Pickgrin Says:

I figured Brent and Miko’s pre game “ritual” would somehow cause problems one day….

“Brent Grimes Has A Significant Groin Injury” – aaand there it is….

  136. Godeep66 Says:

Ha ha ha you snowflakes. I told you two weeks ago that he would not play 8 games this year and everyone hammered me. He is just here to pick up a check at the end of his career. You see, that’s what vets do to this organization. Why some you clowns get it. 34-13 Saint’s Win!!!!!

  137. LakeLand Says:

I have gave this game a lot of thought and I have studied the injury report, roster etc. So I have came to this conclusion.

    Saints 45
    Bucs 17

  138. LakeLand Says:

    **come

  139. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Miko pulled that groin!t

I encourage people to not freak out. Davis and Steward advanced quickly in camp. They are ready for the fire.

  140. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Miko spoke of their pregame ritual previously. That’s the only way he could have hurt it, lol. Heck, a woman like that would permanently disable my groin!

  141. Reach87 Says:

We may not have Grimes on Sunday but we do have some crying, off the bandwagon posters. Glad the team is still gonna play. We can friggin win this game. Run just enough and play action to move the chains, no quick strikes on defense, and no special teams letdowns. Go Bucs!

  142. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Did some digging. Apparently, Grime is only listed as doubtful, so the injury cannot be that significant.

Now, I realize certain people with the initials L. D. are just totally despondent and feeling like things have to go badly, but this is pure panic, isn’t it? The worst does not have to happen! Allow yourself some hope!

  143. adam from ny Says:

atlanta will sign the tandyman due to their recent injury of neal…and we will sign no one…and make believe that rookies can outwit drew brees…please understand, even if we have talented rookie, the game is just moving to fast for them at this point…while things are in super slo-mo for brees after all these years…he can easily exploit our young talented corners…

u think grimes hurt his groin stroking or boning?…i hope not…hell of a way to go out

  144. adam from ny Says:

hopefully it’s a fake injury and koetter and them are playing games with payton…

just like after the game when they meet on the field for a handshake…i hear koetter has been working big time on his uppercut backhand bitchslap…hopefuly he leaves a handprint on paytons cheek…and puts an end to that cheeky tude

  145. adam from ny Says:

    sean payton = cheeky tude

  146. adam from ny Says:

and just so you know, cheeky tude carries around a laminated waffle house menu on the sidelines to cover his face when he spits ying yang

  147. JimmyJack Says:

A little underlying storyline here it the battle of Secondary’s.

The Saints featuring a secondary led by their stud second year CB…..whatshisname.

The Bucs led by their brand new secondary led by two rookies with very high cieling!!!

M.J. forced two fumbles against the Titans and Ronde Barber may have nailed it when he said those plays “where on a whole nother level”.

Neither Ronde nor I can say Stewart is that. Only M.J. can!! Either he gonna bring it or he ain’t. GOO BUCS!!!

  148. Howard Cosell Says:

Sh*t like this is why Gruden made a cross symbol with his index fingers when the Glazers asked him to return (ward off the vampires Lol)

Just poor ownership and a paper thin roster year after year after year after year….

  149. Coward Blowsell Says:

you just can’t put a bunch of rookies up against an old savvy vet…he will feel them out…they will offer up their glaring weaknesses to him…then he will exploit them…that’s just how it goes…only hope is for “funny bounces of the ball”…or the old “any given sunday” saying…who knows…maybe grimes is just tapping out after realizing the team is lucky to win 7 or 8 games this year…who knows…just remember rookies are rookies…they carry pads, get punked, and get hazed and spanked in the shower room like bitches

  150. Coward Blowsell Says:

  151. Jmarkbuc Says:

    —————-
And it’s just the first game of the year.

How do you spend six weeks (or 4yrs) getting ready , and roll like this?

  152. Bucwatcher Says:

    WOW…

#28 and #29 are the worst DBs in the league.

Drew is going to have a field day on Sunday.

  153. webster Says:

So the saints last year had a rookie safety and a rookie corner back that help turn their defense from 31st to about 14 but some of you think the bucs cant have success with two rookies? Alot of you are idiots and wimps. Girly men as the termenator may say. I wonder what you girly men tell your sons when things get tough? You girly men tell them to fold like a cheap suit or hide in a corner. You girly men are the reason we have all these mass shootings because little billy was not mentally tough and could not accept being told no for Prom. You guys are wimps.

  154. Riggz Says:

Grimes is definitely our defensive mvp. I just hope it’s not the same ole’ same ole’ Bucs. Where Drew Brees completes 97% of his passes and doesn’t need to wash his uniform after the game. Not to mention, Kamara breaking 87 tackles against the Bucs…

  155. Howard Cosell Says:

    @Joe
I’m offended by Webster/Unbelieveable/”Blosell”/Glazer-Shill bastardizing the name of the greatest announcer ever

There used to be guy on the old BUcs forum who was a moderator that had like 500 different accounts. I’m pretty sure this is the same clown

  156. Howard Cosell Says:

You should research tracking down proxy servers if possible

  157. Howard Cosell Says:

There’s absolutely no doubt this is the same guy that peed his pants over a mere mention of GS

  158. TOM Says:

IMO there are a lot better CB’s on the street than R. Smith. How about McClain. He already is familiar with the Bucs system. Also if Grimes is going to be out for any length of time they’re need another CB anyway. I guess we’ll see what happens.

  159. webster Says:

    Howard

You idiot. Joe can attest that there is only one me and i have never changed my name girly man.

  160. webster Says:

Who the he11 is GS ?

  161. Godeep66 Says:

Update on how the groin injury: Grimes and JW were out Thursday night in which Gomes was the designated driver. JW could help himself….

  162. Godeep66 Says:

    Could not help

  163. Godeep66 Says:

@howard: don’t let the little fella (Webster) bother you too much. He was raised by a football player (Alex Karras) so he thinks he knows it all.

  164. Godeep66 Says:

There is another report that Grimes wife physically attacked him because he was driving too fast while traveling on I-75.

  165. Godeep66 Says:

    While in the passing lane.

  166. BucsFanInDFW Says:

Can we make up our minds? Our 2nd Round Pick Rojo isn’t starting, and everyone is screaming he is a bust. Now, because of injury to Grimes, one or two of our second round CB’s are likely going to be starting – and now everyone is sitting in the corner crying about how the sky is falling… GM was smart not to throw more money at a vet CB, he needs the cap room to resign Marpet, Kwon, and Smith. The trade off is they have to go younger (cheaper) in other areas – primarily defense.

I think we should try to have some realistic expectations, as well. We aren’t winning the Super Bowl this year. This is an improvement and development year (7-9 to 9-7 sounds about right). Play the young guys, let’s see what we have. In the secondary, we have a 1st Round 3rd Year CB, and 2x 2nd Round Rookies that are going to play a lot tomorrow. It’s a young team at its core, and the youngsters have to play to get better. A lot of you all cry that we don’t develop DBs. Well, they don’t develop sitting on the bench watching marginal quality FA CBs play.

Last comment – I like Derwin James, and I think he is going to be a very good Safety. But it won’t be long until VIta Vea is healthy again and throwing dudes out of the club. Everyone wants to talk about GMC being soft (I disagree, but whatever) – Vita Vea is the opposite of soft, he is a beastie who unfortunately got hurt in the preseason, which REALLY sucks, but give him some time. A bit early to be screaming “he’s a bust”.

  167. webster Says:

    Godeeo

I see i occupy a spot in your head or should i say baaaaaaaa baaaaaaa baaaaaa. Where is little bo peep you sheep?

  168. Howard Cosell Says:

Yes. This is definitely him. He even uses the same tired schtick.
This is the guy who was claiming you couldn’t ban him and he would respawn. He has like literally hundreds of accounts. It’s an obsession I guess Lol

  169. webster Says:

    Howard

You are a lieing sack of s#!+. I have never stated u cant ban me. Joe bans anybody who over steps. U r clearly an idiot. I have been on this board for years and i have never challenged joe about banning me. But i get it. You are team truth isnt truth ie alternative facts. Yes you are an idiot
