Benching Jameis “Terrible Idea”

September 13th, 2018

Waiting for the fall.

The drama is thick, and the Bucs have only played one game.

Who should be the Bucs quarterback for the 2018 season? Backup Ryan Fitzpatrick who went all Kurt Warner on the Saints, or America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, who watched the game like most of us: on TV.

Of course, the Jameis haters just cannot wait to dance on his grave and Fitz having a magical game has only fueled their fantasies. But the truth lies beyond the horizon, say national NFL talking heads and tappers of keyboards, for it is only a matter of time before the same Fitz known to the rest of the NFL rears his gnarly beard.

This was the talk on just about every national platform the past couple of days: Feel free to ride Fitz until he has that game.

In so many words, good guy Mike Tanier of Bleacher Report types those advocating for Fitz might need to take an Uber back to the bar.

The Buccaneers have one of the best receiver corps in the NFL (Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson and Chris Godwin combined for four touchdown receptions), but no one talked much about them in the offseason because we assumed either Fitzpatrick or coach Dirk Koetter would find a way to screw things up.

Whispers that Fitzpatrick should keep the starting job when Jameis Winston returns from suspension in a few weeks will only grow louder after this game. Whatever you think of Winston as a player or person, relying on Fitzpatrick for anything more than a random outburst like this once or twice per year remains a terrible idea.

Tanier added something else about the Bucs in his weekly column, and that is, the Saints look mortal, and both the Dixie Chicks and Stinking Panthers have suffered a rash of injuries to key players. Just yesterday Carolina announced Greg Olson fractured his foot. Again.

Feel free to read between Tanier’s lines but Joe read it as maybe the NFC South stars are aligning for the Bucs this year for a change?

If the Bucs only had a competent pass defense. (Sigh.)

It takes two points to establish a line ,in geometry, at least 3 to make a trend…all I am hoping for is 2-0 for the TEAM….I don’t care about names

  2. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

History says that this Fitz HOF performance is once every 5 years so maybe we should wait until Sunday afternoon to figure out which way the wind is blowing and in fitz defense the eagles have one of the top defenses in the NFL

  3. Mort Says:

The eagles HAD one of the top defenses. We don’t know jack about 2018 yet. What we do know is father they lost several defensive starters. We found two of them down in Tampa.

  4. Wombat Says:

Is this the same guy who threw 5 interceptions with the J-E-T-S???

  5. OneBucPerson Says:

Fitzy had a great day in a win, but that was one week. He’s just the fill in for Jameis. Jameis is the present and the future for this team at QB.

  6. Buc1987 Says:

Wombat…you mean to tell me that Fitz made horrible decisions on the football field and cost his team a win…

I was told by the JBF comment section that only Jameis Winston does that.

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Smart QB play wins games I.E……..Brad Johnson…..

Jameis is not a smart QB….just a QB with all the physical tools

keep jameis as a backup this whole season

  8. doolnutts Says:

I love Fitz… But I love Fitz as our back up… I have been frustrated with Winston on and off the field BUT he is ONLY 24 years old and still under contract this year and next. I think at the very least he gets to finish out his contract and we make an evaluation from there. It would be a horrible mistake to cut and run from him this early on and would set the franchise back another decade.

  9. gilhealy Says:

I heard Ira this morning on Russo’s show agree with that hack that even if Fitz has two so,so performances Winston should stay on the bench. Good job, Ira, lol. How bad do you need a job to agree with Russo on something so dumb? Grow a spine Ira. It’s not to late. Integrity’s not an age thing. There’s still time.

Winston’s 45 game resume is better than Brees, Brady, Manning, and Rogers. And don’t yap about the garbage time stats. This is a 21-23 year old playing for a crap team putting up historic numbers. So all you delicate flowers who think Winston is bum because the media tells you so, snap out of it.

  10. R.O. Says:

Not with this Defense. Nothing is more frustrating than WRs running wide open and free. At least Schiano’s was #1 against the run.

  11. Godeep66 Says:

Cmon Joe. It’s the same receiving core from last year and JE still sucked. There are many more NFL experts that say leave Fitzpatrick in if he goes 2-1. You know for a fact they we would have lost the NOLA game if the extra chromosome carrier JW would have played. He would of had at least two turnovers and missed on the longball, that Fitzpatrick connected on, more than once. Too bad he can’t drop that extra chromosome like he doe a football while in the pocket.

  12. Godeep66 Says:

AND Fitzpatrick demands respect from his teammates, while JW only gets it from half of the team.

  13. Gettinthebucs Says:

gilhealy I see you spittin facts over there bro. Can’t wait to see Jameis play behind this line and also benefit from Monken calling plays.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

@Wombat … “Is this the same guy who threw 5 interceptions with the J-E-T-S???” Why denigrate a great performance by Fitz? How about INSTEAD we all hope that he replicates what he did last Sunday against the Eagles? Our OLine protection was superb and our receivers caught just about everything thrown their way. Quite a bit different SUPPORT than what he had with the Jets that year (they were a very up-and-down team to say the least .. ended up 5-11 with an offense AND defense that was all over the board).

BTW, looks like Fitz threw SIX INTs that game (against the Chiefs). Interestingly, in the previous game against the Bills (a better defense), he went 24-for-34 passing for 374 yards and one score (Jets won 37-31 … sound familiar?). His passer rating was 116.5 … not too shabby.

  15. Ed Says:

Winston, beat this same team last game of last year season. Where was the love for brother Winston.

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

Yeah Wombat…also the guy who won ten games one season for the Jets.

Just because the majority of us agree that JW is the better QB doesn’t need to diminish Fitz’s skills.

JW WILL be back…it’s HIS team…he IS the franchise QB.

If you JW fans must grip here’s the realistic scenario that could get ugly…say JW plays pretty well for a few games…very well a game but then has a two game slump. When he slumps is when the Fitz talk will get crazy.

Our ONLY chance to get to the SB even next year is IF JW is the real deal. He simply MUST play. If he’s not the real deal we need to find a franchise QB.

I’m a big fan of Fitz…I like smart guys…but he’s not the long term future of this team. How badly do we wish to risk the long term future? JW is our ONLY hope at this moment. That could all change depending on how he plays of course but think how much we have invested in him. Three years…#1 draft pick in the entire draft…looking the other way when “hassles” occured. We have made a MAJOR bet on JW…we NEED to know whether we’ll cash in or not.

Nobody believes Fitz or even JW will have games like our offense put up on Sunday. But ALL of us believe if the OL continues to play well this offense is good to go no matter who QB’s. JW can win with this team or he’s not what we believed him to be.

He has to personally fail in several games for me to call for Fitz…and again I’m a huge Fitz fan who believes some QB’s like Gannon and others don’t really come into their own untll their mid 30’s

a high iq field general is very important – as they make proper decisions…

    just saying…something to think about…

the harvard beard is like having a player/coach on the field…

  18. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    @Godeep66

Seems to me that you’re the one with the extra chromosome bud. Seeing that you can’t even remember that Jameis was hitting on quite a few deepballs and didn’t turn the ball over once this preseason.

Just like anyone with any morsel of intelligence knew that Monk should be the playcaller after watching him do an excellent job in the preseason, anyone with 2 eyes that weren’t clouded by a thick fog of bias should have seen that Jameis outplayed Fitz in the preseason.

But it’s clear that you don’t fall into either of those 2 categories.

  19. adam from ny Says:

don’t fear the beard…love and embrace the beard…

just don’t think about how filthy and foody that beard is after a huge thanksgiving dinner session

  20. adam from ny Says:

the 2 things that immediately stand out when comparing qb’s are:

jameis makes poor decisions quite often…

jameis can not hit the long ball and open up the field for the team

  21. adam from ny Says:

i hear that beard can hold about 12 ounces of egg salad in it

  22. Defense Rules Says:

@TheBucsAnthem … “keep jameis as a backup this whole season.” Jameis MAY very well be the franchise QB Bucs have been looking for since, oh say 1976. He’s got some growing up to do IMO in terms of maturity & field generalship, and whether that happens or not is largely on HIM. I doubt all that many Bucs’ fans would be willing to give Jameis a 10-year contract TODAY worth say $35 mil per season & a boatload of that guaranteed. But most IMO are certainly willing to give him an opportunity to prove that making such an investment in him could be well worth it. Everyone just needs to STOP all this SPECULATION (being fueled by the media as usual) and just CHILL … one game at a time please.

  23. donuts Says:

The 2018 sample size is too small to make any kind of judgment. Fitz has always been up and down so lets see how we feel Sunday at 4PM. However, Fitz would need to light it up every single week to make this a decision. I believe the decision was made in preseason that Winston would return in the 5th game. He wont be ready for the short week 4th game after a month off but if Fitz struggles badly in the first half he may be your 3Q QB in that 4th game. Winston is the starter though so there is no doubt there.

  24. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Everyone keeps saying it was just one good game but Fitz, but he had looked great all pre season and really he played pretty well last year. Maybe he looks good because of the talent around him and the offense suits his game better than any of his previous stops. I’m sorry I like Jameis but if Fitz is playing lights out you stay with him. There are 51 other players on the team whose opinion should count, and if Dirk forces Jameis back in the lineup while Fitz is playing well and winning, he risks losing the locker room.

  25. Marlow vs. Florence Says:

Jamis will not be ready… I repeat, JW will not be ready! No one in their right mind starts a guy, insert name, who hasn’t even been on the practice field with his mates in 3 weeks. It make no sense unless Fitz is injured. Also, due to the fact that the BUCS actually have offensive weapons, it is highly unlikely Fitz takes such a nosedive as to cause a QB change in week 4. His supporting cast will keep him successful, because he doesn’t have to do too much. Like Stella, JW has to get his groove back, and one week of practice will not, I say, will not be enough. Now back to hurricane prepping. Good day!

  26. Teflon Don Says:

Fitz benefited from a great supporting cast and TODD MONKEN playcalling!! We have seen Jameis under Koetter and not Monken. I believe Jameis needs a fair shot at proving himself (which he will) and most of you Jameis haters will be eating humble pie by seasons end. How can you give the keys to the Franchise to a guy who is 36 over a young up and coming QB? Not many Qbs come into the league these days and ball out consistently without issues. Give this man a damn chance he will be the QB we NEVER had! BET THE HOUSE ON IT

  27. Kobe Faker Says:

“The Saints schemed and gameplanned against Fitz under Turtle Koetters playcalling which he looked like crap last year however…

    “RELEASE THE MONKEN!!!”

    Kobe Faker

  28. Godeep66 Says:

@swifty: duhmmy. With a capital DUH. Preseason is practice with refs. JW played against second and third team players. AND his low IQ could even figure out that it was practice. You must understand that dumb people are not poised. They resort back to their dumb ways when the heat is on. Just like your dumb quick triggered response to my comments. Now get back to your fried Spam before it burns.

  29. Doctor Stroud Says:

Yes, I confess that I am now a Jameis hater (for how much his knuckle-headed antics have divided our fan base, among other reasons), but he is still on the team and should start over Fitzpatrick when he returns. He was the #1 pick in the entire NFL draft and the franchise QB. You don’t sit such an important player. If he wasn’t suspended, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. If he is as good as we think, give him (and the organization) a chance to redeem himself. A lot of jobs are on the line this season.

  30. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Marlowe

Because game four at Chicago comes after a short week because of a Monday night game and it happens to be followed by a bye week JW might sit game 4.

That confluence of scheduling might tempt the Bucs to hold JW out of game 4 and not rush him in a short week plus give him a bye week to get ready for a familiar Falcons team in Atlanta.

But mark my words…he WILL play in Atlanta!!!

  31. Buc1987 Says:

    Marlow vs. Florence Says:

“Jameis will not be ready… ”

Really? How do you know that.

I’ve seen teams sign QB’s off the street to play in a pinch….didn’t play well, but Testaverde comes to mind with the Jets. He wasn’t even on the roster…or knew the playbook and played on a weeks notice.

    Just sayin’.

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

Lets hope that WHOEVER the QB is, that they win games. The pieces are there on offense to be successful.
Jameis is going to start at some point. The Bucs need to know what they have. Plain and simple. Fitz is NOT a long-term solution.

  33. andrew winnegar Says:

Jamies needs to earn the trust back. Fitz had a great game. If he has 2 more how can you pull him? This team is winning now mode. I say wait till after game 5. What do you do if Fitz goes 4-0?

  34. Buc1987 Says:

I sometimes talk about JBF at work…..

I talk about this idiot in the comments section…

    That idiot is Godeep66.

  35. Bird Says:

    Agree

Yes jobs are on the line…but not what last post commented on …

You stay with the hot hand. Losing record equals GM and coachs jobs. If Fitz continues to play lights out , there is no way they go to Jameis. That’s just foolish …

However, I am a realist. If Fitz goes in opposite direction which is likely based on his roller coaster career , then Jameis will take reins and keep them for rest of year. Unfortunately , Jameis has shown he likes to ride this same roller coaster

  36. passthebuc Says:

Logic 101. In baseball, if a player is on a streak, you keep playing him until the streak runs out. Same with Fitz. If it never runs out, so be it. If he falters badly, use the next man up approach.
Personally, I doubt that JW ever becomes that elite QB the Bucs envisioned. If Fitz falters when JW is available, JW will have plenty of time to show he deserves the big money.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

    passthebuc…and Fitz’s streak is at 1.

  38. Wausa Says:

I expect Fitz to play well over the next two games and I expect Jamies to start when he gets back. Don’t forget Jamies had the highest passer rating in the NFL for the preseason and was number two behind Tom Brady in the NFL over the last month last season.

  39. Bob in Valrico Says:

This might be an easy decision if Fitz play slips, but I hope its a very hard decision. Both quarterbacks should benefit from the revamped O line. Jameis will have to focus on playing the best football of his career from the opening whistle.
In the last two years Jameis has not good been enough with the deep ball, partly because he is trying to thread the needle between two or three defenders. Lastly,
he has got to limit his turnovers. I hope he does this, Bucs fans deserve to have
more wins and more potent offense with strike capabilities.

  40. LakeLand Says:

If Fitz perform well against the Eagles and Steelers. This debate will be senseless, you can’t bench a guy, after 3 solid performances against division champs. Also competition is always a good thing for a young QB. Jameis has been gift-wrapped the starting job for too long. It’s time for him to earn it.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

Wausa…didn’t Jameis throw for 200 yards in one quarter during pre-season? ONE quarter?

That’s right it was against 2nd teamers and it was only pre-season…those balls that we saw that were thrown on a dime by Jameis don’t count…cause it was pre-season. Accuracy doesn’t count in pre-season. Man I need to really get with the program…..

  42. stpetebucsfan Says:

Ironically both JW and Fitz are on the same one game win streak…both having defeated New Orleans to end last year and start this year.

We can nitpick all you want but consider that again. We ended the season beating the division champs in our house and opened the season beating them in their house. How is that not a positive?

  43. Buc1987 Says:

So let me get this straight…Jameis was playing….WITH….2nd string WR’s and TE’s and still balled out….

    Is that what happened?

Man he’d really suck with the first string….oh wait the first string are HIS weapons….the team shopped for his weapons. smh

    …………
Not a JW hater in any way but Fitz has been Offensive Player of the Week 6 times in 120 starts says he goes off once every 20 games by my math.
JW has won the award once in 45 starts. Just numbers.

  45. Buccernutter Says:

    Marlow

Not only do I disagree that Jameis won’t be ready, I also think that’s the dumbest opinion on this thread. Jameis isn’t Cutler. He’s playing as we speak I bet.

It’s just like if a guy is injured, but comes back one week suddenly. If cam is hurt for 3 weeks and then cleared do u rest him? Hell no.

    You couldn’t be more wrong.

  48. The Buc Realist Says:

Its all a very exciting time for Fitz right now!!!! But from the past, one has to worry about Fitz playing at that level for long!!!!!! And the “real” fans say play fitz as long as you can!!!!!! But last Sunday’s game is as lively of an arm as yu will see for Fitz!!!! As the season goes on, he loses are strength, which is not terribly strong to begin with!!!!!!!!! Whether from age, or bruising play of running around, we know that the play will die off, and JW3 will get to play this year!!!!!!! The “real” fans just don’t know when!!!!!!! And it should be a week to week decisions, and The Coaches should not release any information until they absolutely have to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

    Doolnuts

I’m over the 24 year old nonsense. I was charged at 22 with leading nine great young men into combat. I was tasked with making tactical decisions that might have resulted in one if not many of them returning. This 24 year old decision making is bs. He’s capable of making correct decisions but instead he makes poor decisions on and off the field.

why are we still talking about an impressive performance by monken, fitz and the offense?

we need to be talking about why smitty still has a lousy defense with all the upgrades he’s received…..

but im sure “real” fans have excuses for him…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  53. Walter Seidel Says:

Having Winston on this team, especially for families of fans with young kids, is a terrible idea. Fitz just might be paving the way to Winston’s exit. We shall see.

  54. Buc1987 Says:

813bucboi….the excuse (fact) is it was Drew Brees and the Saints at home…

I’m not a Smitty fan at this point…but one can easily say that. At least I can.

  55. AlabamaBucFan Says:

If Fitz plays well and wins, why mess up the chemistry. Beside Jameis done this to himself and if this comes down to a harsher outcome, then he will only learn from the experience. He must be accountable for his actions even if it seems unfair.

  56. Buc1987 Says:

Nothing makes me laugh harder on JBF than a post by Walter….LMAO!!!!!

    Kids and families now….

    Please explain why Walter.

I’d love to read your theory on this one.

  57. Buc1987 Says:

The problem with you 2 knuckleheads…is you think there’s this large Bucs fan base out there that hates Jameis Winston. I told you they’d be here with you too if it were so. The answer…they just gave up on the team….nonsense.

Walter likes to say Winston divides the fanbase…..cites all the fighting on JBF as his reason. Pisssssssssssh the fighting’s been going on at least since 2013 when I found this site…..just to clue you in. This is what we do….

  58. Godeep66 Says:

Agreed I think Winston should start when he gets back for the simple fact this franchise has to many weapons to be in doubt about the starting quarterback. I want him to stay if for no other reason as to find out if we keep him or move on in March. With the contacts and players we have these weapons are in place to have a good run but the quarterback spot is up in the air and it shouldn’t be

  68. Brad Says:

This new Monken offense is built to Jameis. What I arched and have seen for 5 games (preseason) is a coach who makes the offense around his players ala McVey in LA. What we’ve watch is the ideal offense for Winston. Only caveat is… he need to be able to throw a consistent deep ball.

Fitzpatrick played good in the Preseason, but Winston played great! I believe Winston is working his ass off right now with former players and will be ready! WWinston threw most of his picks last year when his shoulder was bad. He should’ve been forced to sit and heal a lot earlier. He also forced things trying to make something happen in order to overcome our sorry Defense.

Jamies is a young man that has made plenty of mistakes on and off the field, but people I trust that know him personally think he’s a wonderful person.

That does not excuse any of his transgressions, but I think the clear hatred you are showing him and Buc fans that support him is over the top.
I get it if you want Jamies gone, because of the Uber incident and that would be fair.
However, Jamies has done countless positive things off the field that I would hope any Buc fan would be happy to know he is doing.

Jamies is most likely going to have a great career in Tampa. Hopefully, you can find it in your heart to forgive him and give him a second chance.

Buc1987…….why do you ALWAYS feel the need to address ME, instead of the ISSUE, which is that WINSTON is a turd!!! But please continue, as your attacks tend to make me more visible here, and furthers my message.

  81. Brandon Says:

Why do people still call a receiving corps a “core”? How ridiculous is that? Joe even wrote it correctly in the article and yet it is always effed up in the responses…

core-a central part and foundation part of a distinctly different part

corps-a group of persons associated together

How hard is this to differentiate? I can’t even get through half the comments because of the total lack of mental acumen being displayed, CORPS, RONDE Barber, Chris SIMMS, Charles SIMS, MIKE Alstott, am I leaving anything out?

  82. Godeep66 Says:

Chew on this JW dumpster dwellers:
Fitzpatrick had three touchdown passes against the Saints that went for 30-plus yards in the air. He attempted just four of those types of passes, and all three completions were for scores.

Last season, Jameis Winston was just 3 for 20 on such attempts, throwing for just two touchdowns and one interception.

While it may be too early to say that Fitzpatrick will continue this hot streak, the Bucs may have no choice but to stick with the grizzled veteran if he leads the Bucs to a 3-0 or even 2-1 start. He’s proven he can lead a team, and given Winston’s inconsistent play at the position, Fitzpatrick could be the missing piece to get Tampa Bay back to the postseason.

    It’s a MUTE point

  84. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

Godspeed were u blind last year jw didnt get 2 seconds before he was running for his life. Fitz had all day like it was the Pat’s oline. That is why JW was on fire in preseason cuz the oline finally is doing their job. Oh I forgot ur a jw hater so never mind of course u seen that u just ignored it like the rest of the Bucs Complaint Department BCD’s that should be all u hater fans new name

  85. mike malarkey Says:

keep the real americas qb in… FITZMAGIC

  86. Buc1987 Says:

    Fitz’s streak is at 1.

May he light up the Eagles defense like Joe Montana for all I care. Hope he does.

Again …Fitz’s streak is at 1.

  87. Buc1987 Says:

mike malarkey…you’re the real America’s QB!

  88. ChipBuc Says:

Godeep66, Just because you say I’m not a troll, and just state facts doesn’t mean it’s so. I think you could give Trump a run for his money, with all your alternate facts. Just saying.

  89. Rod Munch Says:

I’m as big of a Jameis backer as there is, but if Fitz is continuing to have a new career best game each week, you play him until his beard falls off.

With that said I have a feeling that Fitz is going to do what Fitz normally does, and that is have a great game, then turn into a pumpkin. 6 TDs and QB rating in one game in 2014 in a dome, the next game, outside, he passes for 135 yards, 0 TDs.

That has always been the knock on Fitz, he’s really inconsistent, and of course he’s terrible when the weather is bad. The weather should be pretty good on Sunday, but it is outdoors. Lets hope Fitz can play extremely well this week.

I’m guessing Fitz probably starts week 4 just because it’s a short week and Jameis would come in cold, but coming out the bye I full expect Jameis to be back in charge, but if Fitz can play his way into making me look dumb, then fantastic!

  90. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

13 big differences in the conditions JW played in 2017 and what the Bucs have this year!

    1. Again a great preseason, played a lot with the receivers during practice and after…that was Jameis NOT FITZ..However everyone benefits!
    2. A better player under center
    3. an improved offensive line
    4. Seasoned weapons
    5. Donovan and Ali holding the left side
    6. A clean pocket
    7. A running game
    8. JW ball is a complete spiral with the laces down
    9. LIGHTS OUT prwseason
    10. JW now has the green light to make QB runs…that was stopped before because they feared he would get injured and ME said he doesn’t like when the QB’s go for TD’s and take plays from them…(that was during JW’s first year)
    11. Improved defense
    12. an accurate kicker
    13. …and his shoulder isn’t injured!!!

Wake up people! Be careful what you pine for…

  91. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

What if we make it to the play offs…we would need JW to be ready..because Fitz may Fizz out

  92. Not there yet Says:

    Godeep66 Says:
JW played against second and third team players. AND his low IQ could even figure out that it was practice. You must understand that dumb people are not poised.

Lol wow you’re pathetic…… Talk about how IQ you seem to know all about it so for the sake of sanity stop embarrassing yourself by imitating Trump, it’s an easy assumption to say you are more ignorant than you’re posts suggest. Even trolls here are complaining about you
