Koetter: “Yeah, Well, You Saw The Play”

August 19th, 2018

Dirk Koetter reacts to Jameis Winston’s special moment

Big Mo” or Big No?

Joe’s got a couple of interesting pieces of video from last night below: And Joe will deduce that they mean that Dirk Koetter wasn’t pleased overall.

Now understand that Koetter is one of those coaches who respects luck and understands it’s part of the game. Heck, eight days ago on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Koetter went there. And you can follow the “Big Mo” link above for a little more Koetter feel on the mystical side of football.

Of course, Bucs fans this morning are thinking a lot about one magical play, the escape and red-zone heave by America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, that landed in the arms of Chris Godwin in the end zone for a touchdown. (Video below)

It was that classic, what-the-hell-are-you-doing-but-great-job moment by Jameis — the very dangerous kind the Bucs want to coach out of him.

After the game, Koetter was asked about the play, specifically whether it “was one of those “no-no-no-yes-yes-yes plays?”

Koetter’s reply? He looked down, scratched his forehead and said, “Yeah, well, you saw the play.”

It almost appeared like Koetter was fighting back a grin, but Joe’s not sure. Certainly, Koetter was proverbially biting his tongue. (First video below at the 3:04 mark.)

Football is such a wild game, the greatest in the world. Just imagine if the Jameis don’t-do-it, final-seconds bomb to Godwin against the Saints last year fell incomplete and last night’s throw was picked off. The difference between greatness and garbage can be such a fine line.

  1. Sumo Says:

Garbage play. Should have never been thrown. He’ll never learn. Obviously.

  2. Buc1987 Says:

    Yeah well…you saw the play….

I watched it 6 times. Don’t see any frustration or disappointment in his face….

Again haters are going to see what they want to see and this kid will never do any good. If he had 3 INT’s last night….you’d never hear the end of it. LOSERS!!!!!

More questions on Monken playcalling please….

  3. WyomingBucsFan Says:

I prefer Monken’s play calling over Koetter’s. I know its only preseason but it really helps having a guy in the booth that can see the whole field. Jameis Winston was surgical last night. If he can stay healthy there’s no way this team doesn’t compete for a playoff spot.

  4. Durango 95 Says:

I had to laugh when I saw Koetter’s reaction. You could see his conflict. On the one head he supposed to wag his finger and say the throw was high risk and the ball should never have been thrown but on the other he’s smiling and shaking his head in disbelief wondering to himself how the hell can you argue with success and another brilliant preformance by his number one signal caller. You gotta love it.

  5. Birdman Says:

There was a flag on the defense on the play, and the flag was thrown right in front of Jameis after he escaped the pocket. On a normal play you’d never want to see him throw that ball, but him recognizing there was a free play was very alert of Jameis.

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

Bonehead play worries me…PTSD vision of falling back and throwing up a 50-50 ball after the team worked so hard getting into scoring position…that play aside Jameis’s accuracy was as good as I’ve seen from him

  7. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

It was a dumb play and he got lucky. Against 1st string secindary players that pribsvltbwoukd have been a pick. Situational football man. You’re on the 8 yard line, smart pass or live to kick a FG.

  8. horse liver Says:

It was a free play. If Aaron Rodgers did that he’d be a genius. What is the matter with people? “Jameis will never learn. Garbage.”

IT WAS A FREE PLAY and he turned freedom into a TOUCHDOWN. And what a stud Chris Godwin is.

  9. dmatt Says:

Jameis took a chance just like Brady, ARod, Brees, Rothelisberg, RWilson, n other elite QB’s would have after seeing the flag thrown because it stuck out like a sore thumb that the linebacker was holding n pulling on Jaquis Rodgers. I know if I saw the hold n flag from my tv Jameis saw it in his line of sight from the field. It happened right in front of the referee who threw the flag. Smart play.

  10. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I think if it was a smart play, Koetter would have praised him for it. He did not.

  11. Buc1987 Says:

dmatt and horse liver……these are bucs fans ya know!

They’re supposed to root against Jameis Winston…..

See only the bad stuff. I saw it his rookie season in here. When he had a good game….you never saw these a-holes. They are dug in now though. Pick apart the good things now too.

It’s how they spend their free time. On the net…. bashing our QB…almost daily.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

HomerSimpsonRocks….well I’ve seen how you “think” already.

It’s not something you should try often.

  13. Durango 95 Says:

In two quarters of play in the preseason. Numbers posted by Jameis.
24 of 31 328 yards and 2 touchdowns zero turnovers.

    Damn.

  14. Godeep66 Says:

I must admit that JW looked pretty damn good last night. Although he did get lucky as hell on the play to Godwin. Also keep in mind that Nd the Bucs has their first team in while the Titans has backups playing.

  15. Pryda... sec147 Says:

Undeniable that Godwin has a special connection to Jameis like Brate and Hump do.

  16. MTM Says:

That school yard crap doesn’t work 9 out of 10 times and is typically picked off. It was vintage Jameis Winston buffoonery.

  17. BucdUp Says:

ALL YOU HATERS GET AWAY FROM JAMEIS, THE BUCS , AMD JBF!!

If Tom Brady would have done that same play everyone would praise his awareness for the free play and his accuracy as a QB. But if Jameis does that play it is bafoonery and total luck…..

HATERS FIND A NEW HOBBY! This is a Bucs FAN site, not trash em site…

  18. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

MTM what are you talking about? He’s thrown several tds in that same manner. I don’t even recall him throwing a pic on those throws. Sure they can make you cringe but he had an uncanny knack of connecting on them. So calm down young man.

  19. Bobby Says:

Look, if he didn’t see the flag it was a dumb choice but you have to admit the throw was accurate. It wasn’t some lame duck Hail Mary, it was pretty much a rope straight to Godwin. Luck?? I don’t know. Damn good throw while going backwards? Looked like it to me. Lots of QB’s throw while getting hit. Some turn out ugly, some turn out like Winston’s. It’s in his DNA to take chances. I don’t mind that. I do mind some of the throws he made last year when he was nearly on the ground. This was different. That was a controlled throw that went right where he wanted it to go. Bravo Jameis!

  20. Reach87 Says:

Anyone who continues to call that play a bonhead play is either a moron ( you know that was a free play but choose to be negative) or you don’t get the concept (I hope its the latter). Go Bucs!

  21. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

alteredego you must have altered sight and hearing. When you look at the catch defenders weren’t really passing close attention seems like they were looking in the backfield thinking Jameis was sacked. He started his throwing motion just before the guy got to him. The offer part didn’t you see the little yellow flag thrown RIGHT in front of him? Guarantee he saw it and that Godwin wasn’t really covered and any qb who’s worth anything will take a risk on a free play. Low risk high reward. Didn’t you also hear the announcer say it was a free play? You haters really need to put your haterade down is making you blind.

  22. Jeffbuc Says:

Go deep with a semi positive statement about jameis. Holy Moses what is going on this Sunday morning. Next we will here tmax/reality say Gerald McCoy played pretty good. See what winning does even meaningless preseason. Winning just makes everything better. I had a little pep in my step last night after that win and watching jameis look like the qb he has the potential to remain.

  31. Geno Says:

@birdman You may be right that Winston accessed the flag as a free play. On the other hand, it may be that Winston may have assumed it was a free play with not enough great evidence. After all it was the line judge that dropped the flag whose assignment includes looking at both the defenders and blockers near him. Therefore, he could have just as easily been calling a penalty on the buc’s oline. Not saying that Jameis didn’t think it was on Tennessee. Just did he really have enough information in that half a second to be certain.

Thought Jameis had a great game.

  32. BucEmUp Says:

Jameis is a gun slinger…..thats what he does just like Brett Favre and others it’s in his blood. Any dumbarse clown complaining about it and wants the days of Josh Freeman back are insane. I’ll take that will.t win an day. As long as the corners continue to play tighter coverage this team will be just fne

  33. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Buc1987. I made a reasonable claim, backed up by an argument and you take a personal attack on my intelligence, of which you know nothing about. Why don’t you try making a reasonable argument with facts instead.

  34. BucEmUp Says:

Exactly Birdman no different than Brady, brees or rosters airing it out on a free flag

  35. Buc1987 Says:

Homer…I’ve read your comments over the past 3 weeks…I know enough about you.

Jameis…it’s you against America again. Just the way you like it!

    Silence them Jameis. Silence them!

  36. Godeep66 Says:

Hey dummies. The Browns were 4-0 last preseason and where did that lead them.

  37. Not there yet Says:

No his attitude on the sideline was one that even Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady don’t have, he acted as if it was all in a day’s work and it was a routine play not like it was luck. If he is going to be the future at quarterback expect these idiotic plays the rest of his career. Touchdown or not there was no one on the sideline telling him it was a bad throw. Plays like that are even insulting to Brett favre

  38. Walter Seidel Says:

Starting Sept. 9th, those plays will all likely be turnovers. Amazing that some people still call this crotchgrabber the best QB in Bucs’ history.

  39. Couch Fan Says:

Leave it to Buc Fans to criticize a Touchdown. Why would you want to take the play making ability away from the play maker? Sheesh.

  40. Walter Seidel Says:

    DavidBigBucsFan…….say it again……..LOL

  41. DRFEELGOOD Says:

Even the announcer says live that Winston chucks it into the end zone “because there’s a flag on the play”. He knew he had a free play and took advantage of it. And he trusted badass Godwin, who flashed open, to outfight the DBs for the ball, which he did. Keep hating haters. At some point soon you’ll have nothing to criticize.

  42. martinii Says:

It’s preseason, a flag has been thrown, and you throw a perfect pass to a receiver who has been spectacular throughout camp. Yeah I guess you in a perfect world should take the loss. Jameis had a hot hand, I make the throw.

  43. I Bleed Pewter Says:

I’m getting weary of the people who bully others and call them haters if they have any constructive criticism of Winston at all. Just because a fan believes that play was too risky you have some numb nuts in here that want to call everybody a hater. Well get this @ssholes, I like Jameis and he should have never been that careless regardless of whether it worked or not. Those type of plays can lose games as well.

  44. Doctor Stroud Says:

Let’s hope that opposing D-coordinators see this film and want to double (or triple) Godwin. This will allow other Bucs WRs and TEs to roam more freely. That’s why the O-coordinator gets the girls and the big bucks!

And, what was the original play call? It seems to me that it was a three step drop, especially that close to the end zone. For some reason, JW didn’t pull the trigger, maybe because of coverage or a D-lineman or some other player in the passing lane. I don’t think he likes the “hot read” anyway.

  45. Shane Says:

It was a free play? Is he supposed to take a knee ?

  46. I Bleed Pewter Says:

    @DRFEELGOOD

There may have been a flag, so what? Had it been an offensive foul and also intercepted we would have lost possession. I suppose next you’ll tell us all Winston knew it was a defensive foul? b.s.

  47. joestang Says:

Don’t know if jameis knew that was a free play, i doubt he knew. Playcalling is 100% better than last year. Monken is a better playcaller. Plays do not appear to as scripted as koetters play calling.

  48. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Buc1887. I’m still waiting for you to make a reasonable argument, one without resorting to insults. This is your chance to show us all how intelligent YOU are.

  49. RickinFtMyers Says:

We don’t and likely never will know two things about this play: (1) Although Jameis Winston says he saw the flag and knew he had a free play, we’ll never really know whether that’s true or not; and (2) did he really know the flag was on Tennessee, because typically flags that result in “free plays” are something obvious to everyone, like defense off sides or encroachment not something that is often subtle like defensive holding.

  50. BucFamous Says:

    IT WAS A FREE PLAY!!

Some of you all seem like you don’t understand this game at all.

    Great play by Winston!

  51. Couch Fan Says:

Comical how you all are trying to nitpick a TD. It coulda/shoulda/woulda been but WASNT!! To win in the NFL you must take chances. Somtimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. We’ve seen for the last 10 years what playing safe gets you.

  52. I Bleed Pewter Says:

    @couch

and we’ve been losing for the past ten years nimwit

  53. Couch Fan Says:

Thats exactly my point… Nimwit. LMAO

  54. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Dirk had not yet seen the play from a different angle either!

Simple go listen to Godwin’s take on the pass…they
practice that way and HE knew he needed to come down with it…why did Monken say the Bucs sucked in the REDZONE…”because they wanted to” well SORRY..
    ….
but Jameis want to not let us suck in the REDZONE…and he rarely have thrown interceptions in the REDZONE…

    NO risk no reward!

  55. Ed Says:

In a regular season game you make that throw vs a good defense and it’s 95% chance of a pick taking points off the board. It’s a “Hail Mary” play only time is when team is down by more than a FG at end of game and you have to get in end zone last play of game situation otherwise if you can’t see a receiver don’t throw it.

  56. AlteredEgo Says:

    Ed got it correct….

  57. Couch Fan Says:

Taking as much as you can get on a free play is the right thing to do against any defense. Thats just common sense.

  58. AlteredEgo Says:

Couch…it was not known to be a “free play”…could have easily been offensive holding and an interception….sure Jameis saw the flag thrown in front of him but had no real understanding of the call…it should have been a throw out the back of the EZ or take the sack…even Jameis said” he expected to get yelled at in film study…not a good decision…scroll up to my first post on this thread for my compete evalution

  59. Howard Cosell Says:

Lol you haters know a free play better than an NFL starting QB.
Jameis has a great head for the game. HE KNEW it was a free play. Howard believes him 100%……of course the Lynch Mob will tell you he had no idea what was going on when he threw the ball

  60. Howard Cosell Says:

Jameis is easily the Bucs most exciting player. Haward feels a little bad for guys like him and JPP who are stuck working for the Bucs.
Guys like McIceCream love it here, but guys like Jameis need to win

  61. Oneilbucs Says:

I told y’all it don’t matter how good Jamies play they are going to look for something to talk bad about . They are talking about a touchdown he threw. If fizpatrick would have done it or Marito would have it would have been a good play . Now they saying it’s only preseason, and that’s true but if he would have played bad then they wouldn’t say it’s just preseason. They would be throwing him under bus . So I wouldn’t worry about what the haters say they going to try to find ways to discredit him know matter what.

  62. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

alteredego how Dow you know what Jameis knew or didn’t? The play happened right in front of him as did the flag. 1+1=2 so I believe is safe to say he figured the same, but what you guys are missing is this is a scramble play they practice so it was not a hail Mary as some of you negative people say. Tony Dungy was ultra conservative and a number of people despise him for it but Jameis played smart, aggressive and had a great game and you guys don’t say one positive thing meaning you people are only up here to bash him not being Buc fans. He has made several completions and tds behind this exact throw so is not like it’s an unknown thing to him. You pretends you impart some kind of wisdom we don’t have. He made a throw he’s made before and it was a td that what we care about case closed

  63. richbucsfan Says:

Had 77 not given up on the play whoever grabbed JW3 wouldn’t have done that. Poor OLine play.

  64. Dan Says:

Same old Winston. Throws off his back leg falling down. This is who he is folks and that woulda been a pick against a first string defense on Sunday. To the Winston lovers you take him how he is. A loosing qb with a big arm and the decision making of JCut 6. Go Bucs!!

  65. Dapostman Says:

    @Dan,

wow I didn’t know you could predict the future of an NFL game. You must be a billionaire like Bif from Back to the Future. Nah, you’re probably a roofer who has been in the sun too long. Bottom line is…………….that pass was accurate and the WR was open…………..TD. You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.

    #Get After It!

  66. Buc1987 Says:

    Some…………..Bucs fans don’t want to win…

Some……of us can see who they are every day.

    Keep posting!

  67. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Ridiculous argument it was a touchdown but it could have been a pick! Sounds like what could happen in any given game…duh!!!

  68. adam from ny Says:

when mr. kotter said: “jameis you just can’t be doing that no mo”…

jameis said: “go eat a W coach”

  69. Bucsforlife Says:

Yeah all I saw on that play was an offensive line who can’t block.
