Injury Update

Injury updates.

UPDATED: The Bucs had a very abbreviated practice this morning at One Buc Palace and the body count changed — positively and negatively.

Rookie cornerback Carlton Davis was back on the field after missing Saturday night’s game in Tennessee. And a couple of guys who were on the shelf for a long while were back, too: third-year linebacker Davante Bond and special teams ace and last year’s captain Josh Robinson.

Hard-hitting rookie safety Jordan Whitehead was limited in practice and first-round pick Vita Vea, sadly, was not working. Vernon Hargreaves, per Jenna Laine of ESPN, was on the field doing light conditioning, a good sign with for his bad groin.

Laine also Tweeted that Charles Sims, who had his knee drilled early against the Titans on special teams coverage, was in some sort of leg brace. M.J. Stewart, who left with a foot injury Saturday, did not practice.

The Bucs did not offer specifics today on any injuries.

The Bucs make their preseason home debut against the Lions on Friday night.

Time to fire the strength and conditioning coach ?

  2. Jmarkbuc Says:

Guess we’re not gonna get any preview of Vea?

Not sure how one hour of padded practice strained his calf so severely.

  3. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

Will this Fridays game be blacked out? thanks

lol as of now I think we’re more healthy than most teams but wtfdik

Good thing that neither Vea/Jones are needed as starters this year.

Did not see many holes for Rojo at all on the few chances he’s had. Preseason game 1 he had one run where he could have gotten more yardage than he did. Maybe same hting in game 2. He has not had a nice hole yet for any actual space to operate in a game. I think the one decently blocked 6 yard gain he had in the 2nd game was called back on a penalty

What about MJ Stewart & his foot?

Time to fire the strength and conditioning coach

    ==================

Because nobody gets hurt on other teams? A strength and conditioning coach can only do so much. A good coach can prevent some soft tissue injuries but most soft tissue injuries occur from one of three reasons: impact or trauma (nothing can be done to prevent these), not sufficiently warmed up (this falls partly on the player for getting out to perform exercises while not being sufficiently warmed up), and a player being fatigued (this falls squarely on the player for not doing the work necessary to condition his body for exercise). A trainer can only lead a horse to water.

  9. Brandon Says:

Not to be mean, Joe(s). But the main reason I have continually been checking and rechecking this site is to find out about MJ Stewart and his foot. Where’s an update for him?

  10. 813bucboi Says:

    que the injury excuse mob!!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  11. firethecannons Says:

yeah what happened to MJ Stewart?–why put this out incomplete?–at least tell us if you do not know.

Sounds like the Bucs aren’t giving any details on M.J. or update on Vita.

  13. Brandon Says:

I saw that Stewart was standing next to Hargreaves in a pic from practice. He wasn’t wearing a boot or any protection for his injured foot but also not practicing. Looks like good news.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

Even if it is slowly, VH3 starting return is a big step forward for the injured secondary. This “calf Strain” with Vea is sounding like BS. I think the Bucs originally didn’t want to tell everyone that he would be out the entire preseason or longer after his first day of training camp, but I’m not a doctor. M.J.? Charles Simms needs to take the long walk.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

Stewart doesn’t seem to be so bad, but once again I’m not a doctor and haven’t talked to him. Didn’t head to the locker room on Saturday. Think they’re just taking caution with him. Be back on the field Saturday night.

  16. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Seems like Bucs are just playing it super safe. Sucks to see how many ppl have gone down but I have a feeling most will be gtg for Sept 9th.

  17. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

You forgot to list “the sheep’s pride” on the injury report, for all those that said that the roster is set, and Jason Licht had “set the table” and “he did his job”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Casey Morgan Says:

Charles Sims will not make the team…

If you need info that fast follow @NFLStroud on twitter. Between him and Greg, you will get everything you need to know fast. @JoeBucsFan is good to follow also for new articles and an occasional tip or insight on Bucs.

Per Stroud, MJ is not practicing today thats all the media knows too.

  20. orlbucfan Says:

What exactly is Vita Vea’s problem? Is it he’s just too heavy (weight wise) to play pro football? He better show up in one of these final 2 preseason games. Otherwise, he’s a bust.

  21. Alstott up the gut Says:

The Vita Vea injury is concerning me as well. I though with a calf injury weeks ago he would find the field during the preseason at some point. As a rookie he can’t just miss all preaseason and play week 1. If he is not ready for some reps in preseason 4, I fear this will extend well into the regular season.

  22. m0j0 Says:

Calf strains, in my experience, heal up in a week or two. I think they just want to get Vea totally healed up and are going to treat it with extreme caution, since it’s an injury that can come back around again if you don’t take good care of it. They are being extra cautious so that he can contribute when the games count.

  23. Ronteco Says:

Looks like Vita is already a bust. Wasted pick.

  24. Radsy Says:

Way too many extreme takes here in the comments. There’s nothing about a calf injury that suggests a player is too fat or will be a bust. I’m assuming the man probably had the offseason of his life and there was a weakness there that is forcing him to slow things down. He’ll be fine, but I’m worried about you guys.

  25. reality-is-a-beotch Says:

bucs love wasting first and second round picks… great way to keep the basement streak alive

  26. jmarkbuc Says:

    radsy

The sky isn’t falling, but you would expect your first round pick to make some appearance. Or for the FO or coaching staff to say something. Eerily quiet on the Vita Vea front.

We cannot afford a first round bust.

  27. jmarkbuc Says:

And we have signed three DT’s in five days….strange when we were supposed to be sooo deep at this much upgraded position. Curioser and curioser.

    Thanks for the laugh fellas….

Joe – one day, you should do an entire (long) article – entitled “Best of JBF Comments”. Maybe make it a once a year thing.

Publish in one place a hodgepodge of the “best of” all the crazy, silly, stupid, over-reactionary comments that random and regular posters make here.

The 2 above I would flag for just such an occurrence – LOL

  29. Bucsfanman Says:

jmark- “We cannot afford a first round bust.”
    Don’t you mean, another?!

  30. Radsy Says:

    jmarkbuc,

I feel you man. I think the lack of reporting just means that they are focused on getting him to 100% by correcting whatever imbalances he has now that they have their hands on him full-time.

Realistically, he is way behind in his preparedness for the season, but he figures to be a rotational guy this year, and an every down stud thereafter. I don’t think this setback puts that in jeopardy at all. Fantastic athlete at a relatively lean 340

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Mojo

“since it’s an injury that can come back around again if you don’t take good care of it.”

That’s a very logical theory Mojo.

    @Ronteco

“Looks like Vita is already a bust. Wasted pick.”

Are you serious? I want to give you the benefit of the doubt and so perhaps you were just hurling some snark at the people here who would be premature enough to write off a draft pick as a bust with two more preseason games and 16 games in the regular season.

There are some folks here who are great fortune tellers and can see the future of players before they’ve played their first snap. Pretty impressive. *snark font off now*

  32. Radsy Says:

We’ve been down so long, it’s hard for some to see the hope. Our first 3 games will not define us, keep that in mind. We have some great long-term pieces that will help lead our turnaround, of that I am positive.

  33. jmarkbuc Says:

Would be nice to get some update, rather than dead silence. And why have we signed so many DT’s? (not saying it has anything to do with Vea), we did that all off season. Sign me some OL or RB or LB or DB (although I think we did that)

Fanman..I purposely avoided that phrasing, so as not to upset those with super sensitive sensibilities. It is what it is….

  34. Radsy Says:

I think the signings are based on the reality that we need fresh bodies for 2 more preseason games so we don’t have to overwork our real rotation guys.

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

jmark- I figured as much which is why I said it!!! 🙂

  36. Radsy Says:

It will be very interesting to see the frenzy of signings across the league after cuts this year. If I’m not mistaken, rosters will be cut from full camp size down to 53 on one day unlike years past.

There will have to be a RG that can give us better push than Benenoch and Smith.

A veteran CB that could prevent Ryan Smith from taking snaps in the event of injury would be a welcome relief as well.

  37. jmarkbuc Says:

    Radsy,

I guess… But a top 10 overall pick, unprepared for the season, and “rotational” at best…Just doesn’t sound like the right thing.. Kinda like VH3, drafted to be a corner, can’t find a place on the field for him, nor can he stay on the field.

I assume he’s collecting his checks and investing in pot stocks. 😉

  38. Radsy Says:

    jmark,

He wasn’t top 10, but regardless I don’t think it was that he was unprepared, but more that he was likely working too hard on strength and not enough on conditioning. There’s not much sexy about drafting a nose tackle in the first round, especially because it takes at least one season before they can hold their own at the position. I wouldn’t surprise me at all if he looks the part down the stretch of this season.

VH3 is another story altogether, as he really just never had the measurables to justify his draft stock. He was essentially thrown to the wolves when he should have been insulated behind veteran talent and a competent pass rush.

  39. ndog Says:

You people are truly clueless or just flat out dumb, I am not sure yet. You are really on here saying a guy you have not seen yet due to injury in the PRESEASON is a bust. Wow it is hard to be a fan of this team when so many of its “fans” are brain dead.

  40. jmarkbuc Says:

    Radsy

12 overall is close enough, just like 11 overall…. our first picks, in first rounds.

You’re right, nothing sexy about a NT first round, so he damn well should be a talent…hope we get to see it soon.

  41. SOEbuc Says:

If they were just trying to be very safe with Vea, he would at least be practicing very lightly. But the first rounder has been clothed on the sidelines, originally with a boot, since day one TC. Not going to come in and dominate week one, if he’s even healthy enough by then.

  42. Lord Cornelius Says:

lol at a lot of these comments

  43. jmarkbuc Says:

    Lord Corn

Seriously…first round pick, practices literally one hour in pads, and never since.

No update, no timetable, zip, nada. That’s not odd?

DB55 on another thread is exactly right about this organization..check it out.

  44. Bucamania Says:

Seems like a long time for a DT to be out with a calf strain, Here I was thinking this guy would be unbreakable and he doesn’t last an hour in pads.

  45. Bucamania Says:

VH3 on the other hand can stay out. Put MJ in his spot, once his foot is better. Lots of injuries.

  46. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Seriously…first round pick, practices literally one hour in pads, and never since.

No update, no timetable, zip, nada. That’s not odd?”

Not really. A player got injured and was taken out because of it lol. They released the required information about the injury (lower leg – specified where it was and nature – calf strain). They aren’t required by the league to give some specific timetable and it is of no benefit to anyone to disclose it.

Players hurt hamstrings all the time and we see all sorts of time-tables on recovery. Calf strains and other types of injuries are similar in that there is a wide range of recovery times.

This is perfectly normal. There’s already multiple 1st rounders who have been knocked out for the entire year. As of now most in the media believe Vea will likely be ready week 1 – especially when you consider how short he was in the boot. That’d be 6 weeks recovery time – which is the exact average length of recovery for most calf strains per google

  47. Mike Johnson Says:

I don’t think Vita is going to be in game shape come regular season start. If he does not hit the field anytime soon, Its gonna take hima while to get where we want him. I’m really concerned about bigboy now.

  48. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“Walk softly with a big MF splint and carry a big MF first aid kit”

  49. jmarkbuc Says:

    You rock TBBF ROTFLMAO

Bucmania, agreed. Thought this guy was some monster game changing Dlineman. Made it an hour in pads. Doesn’t bode well for when the real bullets fly.

I still think his real injury is more about 340lbs in the Tampa heat.

  50. bucanation Says:

i hope vita v is not just a big pussycat

  51. caloyskicb@msn.com Says:

Regarding ever mounting injuries. I am a firm believer in Feng Shui and the location of the Bucs does not have fortuitous CHI. One Buc place is surrounded by either hospitals or clinics. Some people may find this absurd, but what have they got to lose if they consult a Feng Shui specialist to counteract all the Bad CHI

  52. BucNut33 Says:

WHEN will Bucs fans point the finger to mistake Aden in the 1st Round when’s future legend, Derwin James, was left to pass by selecting sideline statue rock, Vita Vea. Why draft an unknown west coast fair athlete when there is a proven Floridian in Derwin. Love Licht it C’MON MAN!

  53. The Buc Realist Says:

Shameful that some of these sheep think that they are Buc fans!!!!!! If they were pressuring an injured DT to play in meaningless preseason games, the sheep would just complain about that!!!!!!!! It is not the subject that is the true issue!!!! Its about painting anything in a negative light!!!!!!!! the gloom and doom around here that has been said since the beginning of the off season has been more than embarrassing!!!!!! Can’t wait to see many change their usernames once again half way thru the season!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!
